My battery finally went dead after about 8 years of service. I couldn't find a replacement locally, so I went on line and bought a replacement battery from DR. The price was right and the battery was exactly the same as the original and fit perfectly. I'm a happy camper - 5 stars to DR.

Battery life is unacceptable

This is the 3rd battery I have ordered in the last 4 years. DR would have you believe that it is your fault for not trickle charging in the cold months. I have used it frequently with snowblower attachement in winter and battery is still dead one month later. Not a user fault, a supplier fault.

Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review. We think you have done well using 2 batteries since 1998! The average life expectancy of the battery is 3-5yrs. At 7.5 years per battery on average you must have maintained them well. Here’s to many more years of battery life! Thanks again for your review and we will be contacting you to go over any further questions you may have.

original battery lasted less than a year hope this one does better.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review. We apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered. The battery should last 3-5yrs with proper care. It should be charged every 1-2 months when not in use. While in use on most machines that have an engine, the battery should be recharged while the machine is running. It may take up to an hour of solid run time to replenish what was used for starting. Please check the output of the voltage regulator on your engine & also the inline 20 amp fuse to make sure they are both good. The output should be about 14-16 volts DC.

Used the grader three times and stored the battery for the winter. Now it will not accept or maintain a charge, making the grader inoperable. Having to purchase a new battery each year is unacceptable, expected quality from such a well known company.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a Battery review. We're sorry you have had this issue but appreciate you expecting a quality product from us! The Battery does need to be maintained when not in use. Charging every 1-2 months should be sufficient. Thanks again for leaving a review. We will pass your comments to our Product Development department for review.

mower battery
Posted by: Mark E. from Lombard, IL on 08/19/2014
Rating:
I'm very unhappy with the battery. Happy with the mower performance. Per my conversation with the DR rep, the battery should last a long time. Well it allowed me to use it for a couple months and then was dead. The DR rep when I called for another replacement part that was under warranty (very helpful) told me that the battery shouldn't be dead this early. The battery will not take a charge, the DR rep told me to trickle charge it which I did for a day and it still did not take or hold a charge. He also told me the battery should last me a long time, it didn't and isn't. It also will not register as more than a 6 volt on the battery tester, which I found odd. Unit was garage kept. I believe the battery is clearly defective and do feel a bit taken here as I'm confident the battery is bad and was when I received it.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you have experienced a problem with your Brush Mower Battery. We appreciate you taking the time to post a review about it. 3-5 years is the average life expectancy of the Battery with proper care. The battery needs to be charged every 1-2 months when not in use. Please check the voltage output of the engine as it should be recharging as you use it. The output should be 14-16 volts DC. Make sure the 20 amp fuse under the fuel tank mount hasn’t blown also. If it has the battery can’t be recharged by the engine. The battery doesn’t come with a warranty as it is considered a wearable part. If it fails within the 1st few months we will work with our customers on a case by case basis.

I purchased my Power Grader in April 2008.It works great. The battery however only lasts three years even with keeping it in a heated garage and on a trickle charge over the winter.I now need to purchase a third one.Its also difficult to remove and install.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the Battery hasn’t lived up to your expectations. We appreciate you leaving a review though! 3-5 years is the average life expectancy for the Battery. Please make sure your charger is a maintainer style if you are leaving it on all winter.

Replacement much poorer than the original.
Posted by: Frank S. from PERU, NY on 06/16/2014
Rating:
The original battery that came with my DR46 All Terrain Mower lasted over 10 years. This replacement lasted only 2 years. The mower is garage kept and the battery is removed and kept in a heated basement over the winter with periodic trickle charging. I'm very disappointed in the lack of longevity in the replacement, especially when it was maintained and only used in a mower for 5 months out of a year.
Response from DR SupportWe are sorry to hear you are not fully satisfied with the Battery you ordered. We do thank you for posting a review about it though! It looks like you are at 3yrs on the current battery. 3-5yrs is the average life expectancy. You got spoiled with your 1st battery! Thanks again for leaving a review.

Batteries Last Less Than A Year
Posted by: William P. from CHESTERTOWN, MD on 06/11/2014
Rating:
I have a field & brush mower that I bought a couple years ago from a DR factory store in Delaware and I absolutely love the mower, however this is only the start of the third season with this machine and this will be my third battery. After jump starting the mower and allowing it charge for a while the battery won't even hold a charge sufficient enough to run the machine. It just dies the moment you unhook the cables. Contemplating an alternate solution as this is a bit of a hassle every season. P.S. I always start the mower at least once a month to ensure that it runs properly and maintains a good charge throughout the year.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you are experiencing a problem with your Brush Mower Battery. Perhaps your engine isn't putting out the proper voltage to recharge while running or the inline fuse has blown? The engine should be putting out 14-16 volts DC. Starting each month is a good practice, however if it doesn’t run for about 1 hour straight it may not replenish the power used to start it. Combining monthly starting and a maintenance style charger for the rest of the time would be optimal as it would keep the engine lubricated & battery fully charged. We’ll get in touch with you about this.

Battery Has Short Life
Posted by: Jeffrey B. from KITTERY, ME on 04/28/2014
Rating:
I've replaced the battery twice since the first battery that came with the mower, I've not gotten more than a season out of the battery and have resorted to rigging a Sears Die Hard battery onto my brush mower. On the second battery I even attempted to trickle-charge it over the winter to keep it alive, to no avail.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review, we appreciate it. We're sorry you are having this issue though! We show you bought the brush mower in 2007 & a battery in 2010. 3-5yrs is the average life expectancy of the battery.

You'd think DR could come up with a better battery.
Posted by: Carl S. from Bailey, CO on 04/11/2014
Rating:
Maybe I'm just the unlucky guy who gets two bad ones. They don't last more than one season. Put the grader away for the winter, unhook the power source and the batter won't hold a charge next year. I certainly won't be paying the DR price for a substandard battery again. I'll find something else and make it work.
Response from DR SupportThanks for leaving a review about your Power Grader Battery. We are sorry to hear you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of it. Since the Power Grader doesn't have a way to recharge the Battery during use, the Battery does need to be charged after each use & every 1-2 months when not in use to maintain the charge. Ideally a maintainer style charger would be used and you can put it on and forget it until it’s time to use it again.

Posted by: Glenn Z. from FORBESTOWN, CA on 03/16/2014

Just received my power grader. Used it once for 1hour. Put charger on for two days. Hooked it up to use again, it worked for 20 minutes, then failed to raise teeth. Put on charge for a day, still will not work. Will not charge. Hooked another 12 volt from quad and it works. This is Sunday, I'll call Monday, this should be under warranty.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Thanks for doing that! We're sorry for the issue you had. After reviewing your file it looks like the battery wasn’t the issue. We hope it’s been working fine since you got the transmitter/receiver combo.

Battery has a very short life
Posted by: Ed1951 from Oregon on 08/15/2013
Rating:
This battery is the 4th one I've purchased since I bought the mower three years ago. I believe this is the 4th summer. I was told by a DR service rep that the battery needs to be kept charged throughout the year, which I made sure I did with my last battery. I used the mower three times in May and June. Probably a month after the last time I used it I tried to start the mower but the battery was dead and it would not take a charge. The battery was a little over a year old.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review. We apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered. The average life expectancy of the Battery is 3-5yrs with proper care. It is a Sealed Lead Acid style Battery and needs to be charged after each use & periodically when not in use. The Brush Mower should recharge it while in use. It may take up to 1 hr of constant run time to accomplish this though. Make sure the fuse under the fuel tank mount hasn’t blown. It allows the engine to recharge the battery.

If you want a new battery for your DR Brush Mower, then you HAVE to buy this one cause it is the ONLY one that will fit!!!!!!!!!!!! Older mowers had room to put in any battery that would fit on the shelf. With this mower, you HAVE to use the DR battery as there is just barely enough room to wiggle the battery between the wires and shift lever bar to put it on the shelf! Battery works great. No problem with that thank goodness!

The original battery that came with my DR Pull Behind Mower finally called it quits after 5 intense years of cutting in heavy rugid mountain conditions. I cut and maintain about 50 acres of trails and 20 acres of food plots three times a year. This battery out performs any other competiative small engine batttery that I have used on other equipment that I have. Don't hesitate if your in the market or in need of a replacement battery for what ever DR equipment you may own!

I've had a DR brush mower for years, I use it to mow my yard and surrounding area including trails in the wooded area. I also use it in the winter time to blow the snow off my driveway which is 160 yards long. I love it. In central & northern Wisconsin it's a fact we have sand for top soil. My only wish for improvement on the product is to have runners on the mower that do not dig into the soil so easily., especially when backing up. I;ve often made the comment to myself darn it! I'm trying to mow not plow.

Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Thanks for doing that! Since the Power Grader doesn't have a Charging System (Engine), the Battery needs to be maintained more proactively than in our other machines. It should be charged after each use & every 1-2 months when not in use. It should also be disconnected when not in use.

Some reviewers have said that this battery has a short life expectancy. I have just bought it so I do not know how long it will last but the one just like it that I replaced was the original battery that lasted at least 15 years in spite of being left out in all kinds of weather and being heavily used. This one was easy to install on the mower and started right up. I did not even have to charge it the first time.

I wasn't sure the battery was the issue as I'd been told by my local mechanic that it was fine. When I called DR (from Canada) they asked all the right questions and said they felt it was the battery. Service was excellent each time I called. Battery did resolve the starter issue and the issue of the blade cutting out on me.

Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review, we appreciate it! This battery is a sealed lead acid style and needs to be charged after each use & every 1-2 months when not in use. If you are using it on a machine with an engine, it should recharge during use. It could take up to an hour of constant runtime for this to happen though.

Battery lasted for 9 years. Cannot beat that!
Posted by: Millertime from Georgia on 06/21/2013
Rating:
My original battery had to be replaced after nine years. I have never had any type of battery last for that long of a period and it sat for months sometimes without being cranked. It never hesitated to fire up but once and a few hours of charge time remedied that. When a charge did not help last year, I ordered another. If this one last another nine plus years I will probably be too old to follow the mower around anymore anyway. The DR Field and Brush Mower will be passed on to my son before that point anyway.

Posted by: Huck from Tennessee on 06/20/2013

I mounted the battery and it cranked the 8.5 hp engine just fine, I let it run for 10 minutes and turned it off. A month later I attempted to crank the engine again and it would not turn the engine over. I put it on my battery charger on 2 amp charge for 4 hours and it failed to charge. I have since attempted to trickle charge it again with no luck.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review. We apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered. The battery should be fully charged before using the 1st time to ensure it’s topped off. Running it for only 10 minutes won’t allow the engine to replenish what was used by starting. Letting it sit in a discharged state is not good for the battery. It should be put on a charger after use if it is used for less than 1hr. Charging with the trickle charger may take more than 8hrs to replenish.

When it finally came time to replace the battery on my chipper, I shopped at local auto parts stores for replacements. None seemed to fit just right, or they were very expensive. The less expensive ones didn't have the cranking power of the original battery. The original battery lasted well beyond my expectations, so in the end it was a really easy choice to replace it with another original DR battery. And so far the replacement battery has performed flawlessly.

I don't have any reason to believe that this battery is not of the same exact quality of original. I have never had any other battery on anything I own perform as well as the original. I bought this battery as a replacement for the original battery that came with my 17hp Kawasaki Tow-Behind Mower. The original battery lasted until last year (3 years from purchase), and I decided to wait until this spring to get a replacement. The DR batteries tend to last longer than most similar rechargeable batteries for other mowers and generators I have. They also hold a charge for many months, and withstand a certain amount of abuse (not recharging all winter), and will usually fire up the next spring.

I purchased a battery for my DR brush mower one year ago. This is the first battery replacement I have had with this machine since I bought it. [few years] I have the finish mower attachment. This new battery lasted about 13 months and then wouldn't hold a charge any more. with all the negative reviews I would hope that you would do something about it. A $1,700 to $3,000 machine isn't worth anything if you can't start it. The only good review under battery is about how good the machine is. That keeps the average up. don't believe you are serious about the problem. I am 70 yrs old and get some of my walking exercise with this machine when I can get it started
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you posting a review! We're sorry this Battery hasn't lasted as long as the original you got back in 2003! It appears you got this one in 2010. This Sealed Lead Acid Battery should be charged while running if the Fuse hasn't blown and Charging system is working properly. It takes approximately 45-60 mins of solid run time to replenish what's taken out during starting. The Battery should be charged every 1-2 months when not in use to maintain the charge also. Your concerns will be passed on to Product Development.

Ask a Question for This Product

Q.Is this a 104831 battery? The picture shows 3 different sizes and the product code just says 10483, I need a 104831.
A.Yes, our website only recognizes the first 5 digits of the part #. The 6th is the location it comes from. 10483 & 104831 are the same 12 volt 17AH Battery.

Q.How do I know if its the battery or the starter?
My DR Field and Brush mower will not start. How can I tell if its the battery or the starter? I put a battery charger on it and that helped it start a time or two and acted as a jump off, but that's no longer working. When I turn the key I can hear a whining sound as if its trying to turn the starter motor, but not sure if it just does not have enough voltage or the starter is broken.
A.If you have an alternative 12v battery (such as a car battery), you can jump the battery on your brush mower to see if this enables it to start. Just make sure that the machine you are jumping from is not running. If this enables your brush mower to start, you know you do not have enough power from your battery to start the machine. It is better to use another battery or jumper pack than to use a charger to jump because a charger is not made to have that kind of load drawn from it. If jumping the machine does not enable it to start, you know there is an alternative issue than a lack of power. There are quite a few things that could be the cause of this. For further assistance, please contact our Technical Support department toll free at 1-(888) 550-0062 Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 6:00pm Eastern and Saturday from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Q.How do a charge this battery correctly?
A.Any 12 volt Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery should be charged before 1st use, after use (if not charged during) and every 1-2 months when not in use. Connect the RED (Positive) connection to the Positive Battery Terminal, the BLACK (Negative) connection to the Negative Battery Terminal and then plug the Transformer into a grounded working 110/120 volt outlet. Charge time depends on how discharged the Battery is and the charging rate of the Charger. All of the Batteries we use/sell should be charged at a rate of 2 amps or less. Charging with a higher amperage could damage the Battery.

Q.With normal six times a year use what would be the approxamate life time of part # 104831& if needed what is the charge time required?
A.In general, Sealed Lead Acid Batteries should last 3-5 yrs with proper care. They should be charged every month or 2 with a 12 volt 2 amp Charger. If you have a Maintenance style Charger, that would be the optimum choice. The Batteries should be charged before each use, after each use and every 1-2 months when not in use. They should be stored in a cool, dry location but not allowed to freeze. The charging time to fully charge with a standard trickle Charger (1.5a or 1500maH) should be 8-14hrs.
