Demolish any sized stump!

With the power of a world-class 15.3 ft.-lb. DR engine and carbide-tipped cutting teeth, the Pro Stump Grinder has the power to reduce any stump to wood chips. It's the quickest, easiest way to remove eyesores and tripping hazards!

Unlike commonly available grinders that are heavy and cumbersome, the DR Stump Grinder is light, without sacrificing strength and durability. Constructed of 12-gauge steel, it is light enough for anyone to handle.

So, why accept those landscape eyesores on your property? Eliminate stumps the easy way and open up new possibilities—expand lawn areas; open up fields and meadows; blaze new trails; and remove mowing hazards.

Features

Simple Operation

Position the DR Stump Grinder over a stump, lock one wheel in place with the wheel brake, engage the cutting head, and pivot easily from side to side, shaving off an inch or so with each pass. Reposition the machine and repeat until the entire stump is reduced to a pile of wood chips.

Oversized tires roll over rough terrain

These lugged high-flotation tires make for easy transport and give the machine full support during operation. Large size (15" x 4.75") helps to keep machine elevated over wood chips during operation.

Mining-grade teeth

The cutter head features 8 steel teeth that are tipped with mining-grade tungsten carbide a material 10 times harder than steel and which is used for drilling through bedrock. Spinning at 2800 rpm, these teeth take a remarkable 360 "bites" per second!

Simple hand controls

Control the wheel brakes and engine throttle right from the handle bars. Lock one wheel in place while you pivot the machine back and forth to grind away a stump. Unlock and reposition as needed, right from your working position.

Got my Stump Grinder Today was very easy to put together started up on first 2 cranks 3rd time started first pull. works very well checked all nuts and bolt to be sure every thing was tight and secure. I recommend using some common since starts your grinding at slow pass it eat wood lot faster then forcing the unite. I have about 200 stumps to remove so for the money and warranties you cant go wrong. I Do recommend this unite anytime of the day. My Father-In Law has a weed trimmer he got from DR long while back steel has it and has nothing bad to say about it. This unite is no def-rant from any other peas of equipment you need to take time to look over the unite before use and maintenance as recommended it will last you, I'm very Pleased Thanks DR..

the key switch was missing so electric start not possible. The battery clamp had not been tightened and the battery fell off the back. Not known if wiring damaged yet. Hold down bolt for belt guard missing. You owe me a price adjustment. If not then I need to warn others of your lack of quality.

Powerful tool. Assembly is not easy and I suggest viewing the video first. It would have helped me. The biggest con for this machine is not being able to see the area being ground. The guard blocks the view.

Requires Effort and Patience but Gets the Job Done
Posted by: Sean C. from Kalispell, MT on 08/14/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
It works, but it takes time to grind out a stump. If the conditions are perfect (i.e. level terrain, low stump height, no rocks or obstacles) then the machine is fairly easy to operate, although there is a learning curve. Be aware that grinding takes time and you must be patient. If you are working on any kind of slope or mixed terrain, you will be wrestling with the grinder most of the time. Also, it takes a couple of stumps worth of practice to get a feel for where the teeth are cutting. I recommend using a spotter (wearing safety glasses) to guide your movement until you get the "feel" for where the teeth are, because you will not be able to see it for yourself when running the machine. After being guided on a stump or two, you will develop a sense for it on your own. If you have the need to buy a stump grinder it means you either have a bunch of existing stumps, or plan on having them from clearing land. If the latter is the case, consider removing the trees with an excavator - it takes seconds and removes the entire tree with the roots - no stump left to grind. This is not always practical, so if you decide to go the stump grinder route, make sure you understand that the stump needs to be cut as close to the ground as is safely possible and cannot exceed six inches above ground level. Most folks who have the need to buy a stump grinder already have a chain saw, but I thought it worth mentioning. The grinder requires assembly and is shipped without fluids (oil or gas) in the engine. I purchased the optional maintenance kit when I ordered the machine. The kit comes with two quarts of oil. This will allow for the initial oil fill (it takes about one and one-eighth quarts of oil). You'll need to pick up another quart for the recommended engine break-in oil change at the five hour operational mark. Pump gas that is non-ethanol works best. E85 is prohibited. The assembly instructions are fairly straight forward, but the step regarding the connection of the throttle cable to the linkage was very confusing. Fortunately, there is a video on YouTube that shows exactly how it is done, should this step trip you up. I've used the grinder several times and am pleased with the eventual results - it is just the amount of time that it takes that surprised me. 20-40 minutes on a medium sized stump depending on the species of wood. Contrary to what I read by another reviewer, I've found that this machine runs "forever" on a tank of gas (just under a gallon). One word of caution, tipping the machine back on its operating handles to clean the teeth gets you in trouble. It warns against doing it in the manual, but I learned the hard way. The engine oil will run up into the cylinder head and fill the spark plug channel. This will not allow the pull cord to operate due to compression lock. The trouble shooting guide explains how to fix it - remove spark plug and pull start cord repeatedly until oil is removed, refill oil to full level, reinstall spark plug !!by hand threading at first!! turn fuel flow lever on and start the engine. It will take a few minutes to blow off oil and oil smoke, but will work fine. Hope this review helps.

Shipped promptly, all parts included. Used video and written directions for assembly. Would like torque rating for bolts. Pretty simple overall. Recommend electric start, holding handle and pulling cord a little awkward. Hold brake and pull with right hand. I moved left to right when grinding. Don't try to muscle machine, let it do the work. Clean out around stump so your not dulling the teeth. Make sure machine is not on top of chips or it will slide around. Took stumps down to tap root covered with dirt.

A little stubborn to start the first time, but just one pull since then. Have ground out about 20 stumps and the time was simply amazing. Our daughter was able to grind out the stumps faster than I could cut one down and remove it from the location. Most stumps were from the 6-20" inch size and were from apple to Russian Olive to snow pea and the machine ate them up like hot butter. Our property is not level, so moving at times is a little bit of a challenge but the machine IS STILL WORTH THE 5 STARS, and is very very fuel efficient. all that being said, I think that DR could have shipped to a closer location so I did not have to travel 250 miles for the pickup of the unit.

I ordered the pro it looked like it was a good product, man looks don't lie. This tool is the best I have run across. It does exactly what it is named after a pro stump grinder. The first day we took out 16 stumps. It handled it all although the ceder it did not really like. It took twice as long to grind it out but it still did it. The only negative I found is that the belt tensioner rattles a bit. But so do I, with what the stores rent out here to grind a stump I figured that the first day I ground 4 days worth of rental. By my calculations at that rate in a week it pays for it self. I am happy with this machine and thier people.

DR Stump Grinder

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
The DR Stump Grinder shipped very quickly and was easy to unpack. Assembling the handle bars with break collar proved to be a challenge in dexterity! If the nuts would have welded to the frame, then this would have taken just a couple of minutes to do. Having to level the machine to check the oil could be made easier with a kick-stand near the cutting head. Very pleased with the performance of the grinder. The negatives were small annoyances when compared to the work this machine can do. Great purchase. Bill McCaffrey

Good Purchase

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
When I purchased the stump grinder, I opted for the electric start option. After running it the first time, that was a wise choice. I order the machine, the tow bar, and an extra set of teeth. To my surprise they all shipped separately. When I picked the machine up from the shipping depot I got it home and started assembly. As others have posted, there were missing nylon nuts, luckily I have a large assortment of extras my the garage. Outside of the missing nuts, assembly went pretty smoothly with the assistance of the assembly video on the DR website. On the first stump I struggled and had some doubt about my purchase, but I think I was trying to muscle it too much. I took a break and went to the second stump and it became smoother when I let the machine do more of the work. It is a bit of a struggle to reposition the machine due to the accumulation of material under the machine. I found it easier to work my way around the stump. I am happy with my purchase and have many more stumps ahead of me. Disappointed that for the money spent on the machine and earlier reviews of missing nylon nuts, I would have expected them to have resolved the issue that others have brought to their attention.

It worked great, no missing parts when delivered, but. I wish it could handle higher stumps. You have to get a chain saw and bring down the height of the stump below 6 inches. Cutting piles up underneath it make moving it around hard. And for me self propelled would be great. I do need another one but because of the height it can cut and I want a side discharge, I will look elsewhere for a second one. It does what it says it can do. I just have other requirements now.

I finally was able to use this several weeks ago and it worked great. Most of my stumps were probably less than 3" diameter but had a few larger than that. I don't know if it will ever pay for itself but what I like is that when I need it in the future I, or my family, will have it to use. I do like having it when I need it versus having to fool with renting one and taking a chance on the weather being bad or it not available when I need it. It also saves me a trip to the business.

Being mechanically challenged, I asked the lady who took my order, if assembly was required. "You just have to put the handle bars on". She lied! And it was frustrating since you left out the correct bolts for the handle bars, brake, no zip ties, no low profile lock nut, no washers. I called and spoke to Mike who send most of the missing things but did not send the low profile nut, washers nor the correct bolt for the brake. Thank goodness for tractor Supply, which had the needed bolts, washers, etc. As fAR AS THE Stump grinder doing what was advertised, it does a good job on most of the stumps ground so far. Not too well on the Heart pine or fat lighter stumps.

Works well - after developing a technique for movement of machine and proper positioning. The only criticism I would make is - cranking the manual unit while holding the safety lever on the left handle is quite ackward. Perhaps there could be a double handle arrangement to allow the safety handle activation from both handles.

I have had the DR Stump Grinder two weeks and have taken out two 16" stumps and 44". Assemly was staright forward and quick. Good visual instructions! The small stumps were ground down to 8" below ground in 20 minutes each. The Grinder worked great. The 44" was a large srpruce boken off in a storm. That took a couple hours to grind all the relativiely shallow roots around the tree. Roots that werre 8" in diameter and extended 12' out from the tree, lying jright at ground surface or just inches below ground. Grinding those roots out made the rest of the stump a breeze to remove. The power on the unit was fine, I made it grind hard, and it never bogged down. The machine does waht was advertized and more. it is a great tool!

You really have to muscle this around to get the job done. Small stumps are knocked out quickly. Medium stumps are more like 20 to 40 minutes. I'm still working on the big stumps, 2+ feet in diameter. Runs good. Starts fairly easy for a B&S, but it's no Honda. My Quadriceps are getting really defined.

This machine works perfectly. Only one problrem. We ordered a tow bar kit when we ordered the stump grinder and it was not shipped with it. When we called we were told that the tow kits were back ordered. We feel that we should have been informed that this was happening. We waited for the shipment and when we called and found out about the backorder, we cancelled it and my husband made his own tow kit and we have $70.00 in the process.

Assembly was a breeze! Plan on 2 hours to get it all together and ready to go and the stump genocide can begin. Very pleased with the ease of use and power the machine provides (14.5 lb/ft Briggs) to remove stumps from 1" to 2' (haven't ground any larger ones- yet.) Best advice for someone looking for one to do their own: let the machine do the work, don't force it as it will do a much better job on its own with little input from operator. Just pivot and it will do the work.

Bad to the Bone grinder

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
Got my grinder a few days ago. Put it together, fired it up, then started grinding some roots in my yard. After about 10 minutes, I noticed the grinding wheel had stopped turning. Thought the belt had jumped off. It had flipped upside down due to a piece of root hung up in the grinding wheel. Removed the root and resumed grinding, doing roots and stumps. The belt jumped off three times before I used up the first tank of gas. After the 3rd time, I realized the bottom of the belt area was open, which I consider an engineering design flaw. Built a makeshift cover for the bottom area, and 2 tanks of gas later, still no more belt issues. Maybe DR will send everyone a special made piece to attach to everyone's grinder. This baby will do some grinding though!

Better than expected

Better than expected. I was kind of skeptical about buying this stump grinder, because I had rented a different one, and was very disappointed. I ground 31 stumps in two days with this stump grinder, and only had to rotate the teeth once. I was grinding down 50% oak stump's, and 50% Pinetree's stumps and I couldn't hardly tell the difference between the two. I am very happy with this machine! I'm 67 years old, and it was easy for me to handle, and it really does a great job grinding stumps quickly.

Great Stump Grinder

I am a 72y.o. with some fairly significant health issues, I was able to put the machine together including the tow kit that I purchased with it in about two hours. I towed it to the woods and picked my first stump, a 22" old Oak. The grinder had the stump completely gone and 6" below ground within 45 minutes. That included stops to rake the debris from in front of the macine and I took several short breaks. The machine is everything that it is advertised to be. Easy to start and easy to use. I am very happy!

The machine is about what I expected for the price,. It is light enough to move around. It does a nice job and it is surprisingly fast at grinding down the stumps. The down side is the lack of assembly instructions. I used the parts diagrams as a guide. Also the spark arrestor and exhaust diverter tube needs to be redesigned. The small self tapping screws and overall fit up left them loose and they kept falling off.

This is the second product I,ve bought from DR and I couldn't be happier. First was my electric wood splitter that is still going strong since 2007. My new stump grinder is like icing on the cake. Works better than I ever dreamed. Ground 9 stumps in my yard in 2 hours the first day. I average over $100 per hour now using this little jewel. Thank you for such great service over the phone.

Solid machine that works well. It's a challenge to muscle into position on hills, but it chews through any stump efficiently. My only recommendation for improvement is to eliminate the need for three hands to initially start it. (1 for safety override, 1 for the throttle, and 1 to pull start). Once it has warmed up, no need for adding throttle, so it starts easily. I have ground up 20-30 stumps with the first set of teeth. Some old, some new, some big, some small. Overall, very happy with the purchase.

stumps up to 2feet in diameter, mixed virginia pine, oak, cedar and maple. The cedar are the toughest because the stump is still moist as cedar is. The machine does an excellent job and is faster than I expected. Just let the machine do the work and just guide it. Very pleased with the tow package and necessary when working 30 acres. The hour meter helps me keep up with maintenance.

Cleared a total of 74 trees, a mixture of oak, hickory and pine with diameters of 6 - 24 inches. As the trees were on a bank leading to my pond, a traditional stump grinder pulled by a truck was not an option as degradation of the hillside would have been too severe. Have had the machine for a little over 2 weeks now, only 10 stumps to go and it hasn't missed a beat. An absolutely great product that performs as advertised.

Now I forge ahead and it stands up nicely to tough use. A great design! It is so satisfying when you eliminate a stump that you have been trimming around for years!

Bought this machine a couple of months ago and have ground around 200 or so stumps from 1" to 16" diameter, both pine and hardwood. The machine has performed flawlessly without the first issue. It grinds very quickly, i don't know how you could ask for anymore speed out a machine this size. It always cranks on the first or second pull. It is a way better machine all around than I was expecting it to be, because I have used big commercial stump grinders many times, and was skeptical about it. I'm 62 years old and don't have any issues handling it. What else can I say....it's great!

Earlier this year (2015) I bought the electric start 9.0 EX 27 Premier Stump Grinder which doesn't seem to be in DR's inventory any longer, so this is a general comment. It is an amazing machine and we've ground about 20-30 smaller stumps and still using the same teeth. My only criticism and the reason for 4-stars is that for us, on any uneven surface or soft soil, it is difficult to maneuver and really could use some kind of wheel assist/self propel. On the positive side, I bought my first of several DR power machines in 1998 and all good quality.

Been using for about a month as time allows. Have ground both large and medium stumps at an average of less than an hour per stump (includes raking away shavings). Grinder is well built and I had no trouble putting it together since the instructions were clear. I have since bought a hour/RPM meter that helps keep track of oil changes, etc. The only thing I would change would be to add an extension to the oil drain so some old oil would not drain under the engine to the ground and I would not have to remove the battery when changing.

My company is a unique low impact/small footprint tree and botanical service. We use machines with low weights and ground pressures as part of our business model. This machine was purchased in order to grind stumps commercially with the hope that it would negate the need for a separate trailer (since it fits in the hopper of the chipper)and reduce the need to carry protective mats. The machine has excelled so far. It is reliable and easy to use. It arrived within days of ordering and is rapidly paying for itself in some very tight places in finely kept backyards and landscape beds. I had one small issue during assembly which was easily rectified by a call to tech support from the jobsite (good customer service). Assembly time was around 40 minutes. I feel as if the power from the Pro is just right for the cutting wheel diameter and that the overall weight of the Pro is the best balance of power-to-weight of the three grinder options available. The machine exceeds my expectations. Jason ISA Certified Arborist SO-6879A Veritas Tree & Botanical LLC Four Oaks, NC www.veritastree.com

Vague assembly instructions made it time consuming to put together. Several ways to hook up throttle cable. Had a single peace left over with no place to put it. Machine runs great and is fairly easy to use with the electric start. I am concerned that the jaws/teeth will be damaged, because there is no cover or foot to set machine on when stored. Also, the battery has no protection from behind. These small problems are my only reason for only a 4 score.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR® Stump Grinder. We are sorry that the assembly instructions proved less than 100% helpful and we will pass your concerns along. There is no need to worry about the cutting teeth when your machine is not in use and resting on any surface will not harm them as they are tipped with mining grade tungsten carbide. The 8 teeth can be rotated 3 times in order to create a new grinding surface each time. You’ve got lots of grinding power available to you! Please know that you can always call our Tech Support Department and they will be happy to assist you. They are a great group of employees that help our customers with everything from how to interpret instructions to in-depth troubleshooting. Your satisfaction is important to us. Thank you for your business and for choosing DR® Power and we hope to hear from you again!

I purchased the pro model to take stumps out of my four acres of Christmas trees. I was really impressed with this machine. I ground out close to 500 stumps ranging in size from 3" to 12" in diameter in just under 8 hours. As some of the other reviews have stated in is somewhat difficult to maneuver around, but at 70 years old I did not have to much of an issue. It took awhile to get the throttle cable set right so that the briggs and straton engine would idle and it does start alittle on the hard side when first starting. I whole heartedly recommend this machine, well worth the money and well built.

Product Q&A
Ask a Question for This Product
Sort By:
Q.How many hours of use can you get out of a set of teeth?
A.The teeth average 10-20 hours per rotation. The teeth can be rotated up to 3 times giving an overall total of 30-60 hours per set. The hours of usage will vary by the type of wood you are grinding as well as the surrounding conditions such as dirt and rocks. Teeth on the Stump can be easily replaced in just about 10 minutes or so.

We thank you for your interest.

Q.How much does the Pro model weigh and is it self propelled?
A.Thank you for contacting us and your interest in the DR Stump Grinder.

The Pro model weighs 148 lbs on the manual start model and 163 lbs on the electric start model. The Pro DR Stump Grinders are not self-propelled, it comes with lugged, high-flotation tires and a lightweight design. The DR Stump Grinder is easy to transport to any stump on your property. And because of their size, the tires keep the machine elevated over the growing wood chip pile as you grind a stump away.

Q.Can I used this when I have limestone around the stump?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

Limestone, soil, rocks, etc. will dull the teeth quicker than the stump. We recommend that you clear out as much limestone as you can to get the most grinding time out of the teeth.

A.The replaceable 8 steel teeth are tipped with mining-grade tungsten carbide. There are a few variables on how long the teeth will last, such as the type of wood you are grinding, how much dirt and rocks are chewed up.

The teeth can be rotated three times to create a new chipping surface and each surface (or side) will last between 10-20 hours for a total of 30-60 hours per teeth. The teeth can be easily replaced in about 15 minutes.

Our Stump Grinders are remarkably simple and easy-to-use. They allow anyone to remove tree stumps themselves, without having to resort to ineffective chemicals or the high cost of hiring a professional landscaper.

Thanks for your interest and question. ph

Q.What is the horsepower of this model?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Pro Stump Grinder.

Many engine manufacturers no longer rate their smaller engines by horsepower. They rate them by foot-pounds of torque. Rating by foot-pounds of torque is a trend that is spreading throughout the industry because it is a more accurate measure of power. All of our machines are fitted with engines that are more than powerful enough to do the work they were designed to accomplish.

Q.How high can stump be for grinding? Can you grind starting on the side of say an 18 inch tall stump?

The diameter of the stump can be any size. Its ability to do this work is only limited by the comfort of the operator. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
