Demolish any sized stump!

With the power of a world-class 15.3 ft.-lb. DR engine and carbide-tipped cutting teeth, the Pro Stump Grinder has the power to reduce any stump to wood chips. It's the quickest, easiest way to remove eyesores and tripping hazards!

Unlike commonly available grinders that are heavy and cumbersome, the DR Stump Grinder is light, without sacrificing strength and durability. Constructed of 12-gauge steel, it is light enough for anyone to handle.

So, why accept those landscape eyesores on your property? Eliminate stumps the easy way and open up new possibilities—expand lawn areas; open up fields and meadows; blaze new trails; and remove mowing hazards.

Features

Simple Operation

Position the DR Stump Grinder over a stump, lock one wheel in place with the wheel brake, engage the cutting head, and pivot easily from side to side, shaving off an inch or so with each pass. Reposition the machine and repeat until the entire stump is reduced to a pile of wood chips.

Oversized tires roll over rough terrain

These lugged high-flotation tires make for easy transport and give the machine full support during operation. Large size (15" x 4.75") helps to keep machine elevated over wood chips during operation.

Mining-grade teeth

The cutter head features 8 steel teeth that are tipped with mining-grade tungsten carbide a material 10 times harder than steel and which is used for drilling through bedrock. Spinning at 2800 rpm, these teeth take a remarkable 360 "bites" per second!

Engine

Our DR OHV engine (301cc) with 15.3 ft-lbs of gross torque (per SAE J1940) has the muscle to power through hardwood stumps of any size. Available with choice of manual- or electric starting.

Simple hand controls

Control the wheel brakes and engine throttle right from the handle bars. Lock one wheel in place while you pivot the machine back and forth to grind away a stump. Unlock and reposition as needed, right from your working position.

I have used it on several stumps. Works very well. Throttle control sticks a lot making it hard to get max torque. Would be nice to have an hour meter to keep up with time to do maintenance. Hard to see cutting area. Overall, it does the job. No real complaints. Would buy again.

Effective machine, sketchy instructions!

I have previously had good experiences with DR products, so I was looking forward to assembling this grinder and getting to work on a number of stumps I have around my property. The delivery process was not as speedy as I had hoped but the pallet arrived at my local delivery warehouse after 6 business days. The top of the packing case was not secured but when I looked at the contents, they appeared to be fine so I accepted delivery. It took two of us to unload it from my pickup and sure enough, all the parts were there and no damage. Assembly was not too difficult but there were a couple of odd directions in the manual. One of them simply left out washers in the handlebar assembly but the second was more annoying It described the need to remove the air filter assembly and carburetor body in order to attach the throttle cable. This was not completely true. The. throttle cable could be attached after simply removing the air filter assembly. The other problem I had was probably just my interpretation of the directions. I routed the throttle cable through one side of the attachment clip when it should have gone through the other side..... this doesn't sound major but I didn't discover the problem until the entire unit was assembled and I was wondering why I was apparently losing revs from the engine the outer cable housing was slipping.... so I had to disassemble the unity to reattach the cable D'oh!! The machine itself is awesome. Comfortable to handle I'm only 5' 9 180lbs and nicely balanced. There is still a lot of vibration through the handlebar grips but that comes with the territory It's a stump grinder! So in conclusion, its an effective machine that took too long to assemble and is good value for money.

Stump removal made easy

I purchased a DR Stump Grinder Pro with manual start. I wanted this unit because I needed to remove about 60 stumps of various sizes and wood species. It has a little larger engine than their basic model but is still light enough to push around. I did purchase the tow bar for it but as of yet, it has not been needed. The performance of this machine has been outstanding. It chews through stumps like hot butter yet it still very stable and easy to use. The pull start on the engine is no harder than a push mower or similar machinery. The electric start would have been a waste of money for me. The large pneumatic tires make it easy to push around yet allows that stable platform needed to chew up stumps. It is well designed and well worth the money. However, as nice as the machine is to use, it took some effort to put it together from the arrival crate. The directions are adequate but without some mechanical ability and background it would be difficult to assemble. There was one important needed part that was not included that was immediately sent by the technical department that could have been avoided if better packaging quality control had been applied. One major note is after assempbly of all parts, connection of all cables and wiring harnesses, there is no way to shut off the engine without using full choke. There is a safety handle that is supposed to activate a shut off switch but it doesn’t connect to anything and the directions don’t include information on it. This is probably another QC oversite. Still, for the money, this is a great machine. Just be prepared to talk to the tech department during or after assembly.

Good, Fair, Bad and Ugly
Posted by: Don from Comfort, TX on 04/30/2018

GOOD - The stump grinder works extremely well and deserves the 5 stars. I’ve ground a dozen 10” live oak stumps thus far with no issues. FAIR - It is a little tedious to assemble as it requires removal of both wheels to attach the handle. The instructions are good, though. BAD - The “Operator Presence Lever”, a safety feature that stops the engine if released, doesn’t work. The only way to stop the engine on mine is to shut off the fuel or use the choke lever. This safety issue would receive one star. UGLY - I ordered the machine on 3/10. Received an email confirmation of the order on 3/13. Called on 3/15 to check status but the young lady couldn’t provide any information. Called on 3/16 with same result. Spoke to a supervisor and to her credit she finally found the order but said it wouldn’t be shipped until 4/26 as they were awaiting parts! I got the impression much of the confusion was the result of DR having been purchased by Generac and all orders had to go through Generac. On 4/3 received an email that it had shipped. On 4/10 received a voicemail from the shipping company to set up delivery. Returned call on 4/11 but they couldn’t ship that week noted I could come to the dock to pick it up for faster service. Since I’d paid 99 for home delivery, I declined and they finally delivered on 4/16. The stump grinder is very good but the process of ordering, shipping and delivery sure needs improvement and would get zero stars.

This is a great machine! Compared to one I rented, this machine has eight cutting teeth compared to three for the rental unit. The DR makes quick work of grinding down stumps. The only problem I had during assembly is that someone over tightened the throttle linkage pivot bolt this resulted in the sticking throttle. A little turn with a 10mm wrench and a shot of lubricant fix it!

If had had to do this over again I wouldn't change a thing.

Got my Stump Grinder Today was very easy to put together started up on first 2 cranks 3rd time started first pull. works very well checked all nuts and bolt to be sure every thing was tight and secure. I recommend using some common since starts your grinding at slow pass it eat wood lot faster then forcing the unite. I have about 200 stumps to remove so for the money and warranties you cant go wrong. I Do recommend this unite anytime of the day. My Father-In Law has a weed trimmer he got from DR long while back steel has it and has nothing bad to say about it. This unite is no def-rant from any other peas of equipment you need to take time to look over the unite before use and maintenance as recommended it will last you, I'm very Pleased Thanks DR..

Shipped promptly, all parts included. Used video and written directions for assembly. Would like torque rating for bolts. Pretty simple overall. Recommend electric start, holding handle and pulling cord a little awkward. Hold brake and pull with right hand. I moved left to right when grinding. Don't try to muscle machine, let it do the work. Clean out around stump so your not dulling the teeth. Make sure machine is not on top of chips or it will slide around. Took stumps down to tap root covered with dirt.

It worked great, no missing parts when delivered, but. I wish it could handle higher stumps. You have to get a chain saw and bring down the height of the stump below 6 inches. Cutting piles up underneath it make moving it around hard. And for me self propelled would be great. I do need another one but because of the height it can cut and I want a side discharge, I will look elsewhere for a second one. It does what it says it can do. I just have other requirements now.

This is the second product I,ve bought from DR and I couldn't be happier. First was my electric wood splitter that is still going strong since 2007. My new stump grinder is like icing on the cake. Works better than I ever dreamed. Ground 9 stumps in my yard in 2 hours the first day. I average over $100 per hour now using this little jewel. Thank you for such great service over the phone.

I bought the 9 hp model a year ago. I have removed over 100 stumps. I am on the original set of teeth. Just turned them for the second time. When I started I was paranoid about dirt and rocks. Now I forge ahead and it stands up nicely to tough use. A great design! It is so satisfying when you eliminate a stump that you have been trimming around for years!

I recently purchased the pro model. Works well on all sizes of stumps. I have read several review prior to this purchase and noticed that some of the reviews mentioned that the assembly instructions were not in the package. Well the assembly instructons were on in the package. I figured out the assembly just took longer than I had planned. Some folks who may purchase this tool may have some difficuly. DR please make sure to package the assembly instructions. Time is money these days.

Great machine!

Bought this machine a couple of months ago and have ground around 200 or so stumps from 1" to 16" diameter, both pine and hardwood. The machine has performed flawlessly without the first issue. It grinds very quickly, i don't know how you could ask for anymore speed out a machine this size. It always cranks on the first or second pull. It is a way better machine all around than I was expecting it to be, because I have used big commercial stump grinders many times, and was skeptical about it. I'm 62 years old and don't have any issues handling it. What else can I say....it's great!

Earlier this year (2015) I bought the electric start 9.0 EX 27 Premier Stump Grinder which doesn't seem to be in DR's inventory any longer, so this is a general comment. It is an amazing machine and we've ground about 20-30 smaller stumps and still using the same teeth. My only criticism and the reason for 4-stars is that for us, on any uneven surface or soft soil, it is difficult to maneuver and really could use some kind of wheel assist/self propel. On the positive side, I bought my first of several DR power machines in 1998 and all good quality.

Good machine and good support
Posted by: JASON G. from FOUR OAKS, NC on 05/08/2015
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
My company is a unique low impact/small footprint tree and botanical service. We use machines with low weights and ground pressures as part of our business model. This machine was purchased in order to grind stumps commercially with the hope that it would negate the need for a separate trailer (since it fits in the hopper of the chipper)and reduce the need to carry protective mats. The machine has excelled so far. It is reliable and easy to use. It arrived within days of ordering and is rapidly paying for itself in some very tight places in finely kept backyards and landscape beds. I had one small issue during assembly which was easily rectified by a call to tech support from the jobsite (good customer service). Assembly time was around 40 minutes. I feel as if the power from the Pro is just right for the cutting wheel diameter and that the overall weight of the Pro is the best balance of power-to-weight of the three grinder options available. The machine exceeds my expectations. Jason ISA Certified Arborist SO-6879A Veritas Tree & Botanical LLC Four Oaks, NC www.veritastree.com

I purchased the pro model to take stumps out of my four acres of Christmas trees. I was really impressed with this machine. I ground out close to 500 stumps ranging in size from 3" to 12" in diameter in just under 8 hours. As some of the other reviews have stated in is somewhat difficult to maneuver around, but at 70 years old I did not have to much of an issue. It took awhile to get the throttle cable set right so that the briggs and straton engine would idle and it does start alittle on the hard side when first starting. I whole heartedly recommend this machine, well worth the money and well built.

Ask a Question for This Product
Sort By:
Q.How many hours of use can you get out of a set of teeth?
A.The teeth average 10-20 hours per rotation. The teeth can be rotated up to 3 times giving an overall total of 30-60 hours per set. The hours of usage will vary by the type of wood you are grinding as well as the surrounding conditions such as dirt and rocks. Teeth on the Stump can be easily replaced in just about 10 minutes or so.

Q.How much does the Pro model weigh and is it self propelled?
A.Thank you for contacting us and your interest in the DR Stump Grinder.

The Pro model weighs 148 lbs on the manual start model and 163 lbs on the electric start model. The Pro DR Stump Grinders are not self-propelled, it comes with lugged, high-flotation tires and a lightweight design. The DR Stump Grinder is easy to transport to any stump on your property. And because of their size, the tires keep the machine elevated over the growing wood chip pile as you grind a stump away.

Q.Can I used this when I have limestone around the stump?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

Limestone, soil, rocks, etc. will dull the teeth quicker than the stump. We recommend that you clear out as much limestone as you can to get the most grinding time out of the teeth.

Q.What is the horsepower of this model?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Pro Stump Grinder.

Many engine manufacturers no longer rate their smaller engines by horsepower. They rate them by foot-pounds of torque. Rating by foot-pounds of torque is a trend that is spreading throughout the industry because it is a more accurate measure of power. All of our machines are fitted with engines that are more than powerful enough to do the work they were designed to accomplish.
