Overview
K10 RapidFire

SIMPLER—the K28 has very few moving parts to go wrong - especially compared to hydraulic splitters with their pumps, valves, pistons, hoses, and fluid.

STRONGER—Twin 55 lb. flywheels spinning at 400 rpm stores energy from the K28's Briggs & Stratton Overhead Valve (7.5 FPT) DR engine.

FASTER—energy is unleashed via a rack and pinion gear, achieving a lightning-fast, 3-second cycle time (the time it takes for the ram to split the log AND return!).

Learn about the K28 Log Splitter (0:47)

Product Summary
  • 3-Second Cycle Time
  • Outsplits any 28-Ton hydraulic
  • Automatic ram retraction
  • Splits logs up to 24" long x 30" diameter
  • 7.5 ft-lbs torque Briggs & Stratton OHV engine
  • Twin 55-lb. flywheels
  • 2 Year Warranty (90 day commercial)
Features

55-lb. Flywheel

The K28’s 110-lb.cast-iron flywheel produces twice the momentum of our K22 Model’s flywheel -- for splitting longer, larger, tougher logs.

Twice-Hardened Steel Pinion Gear

The Pinion Gear transfers energy from the Flywheel to the Ram. Industrial steel is case-hardened twice during manufacturing for bomb-proof durability

Overhead Valve B&S Engine

The Briggs and Stratton 750 CR Series engine produces 7.5 ft.-lbs. of torque – plenty of power for all home -- or even commercial use!

Auto retraction on a DR log splitter

Auto Retraction

With ordinary splitters you have to engage the return lever until the ram is back to its starting position. The RapidFire retracts automatically, leaving your hands free to load the next piece of wood for splitting.

16-inch DOT approved all-terrain tires on a DR log splitter

Road-Towable

Department of Transportation-Approved 16” diameter by 4.8” wide wheels with tapered roller bearings allow you to transport your K28 on roads at up to 45 mph (note: towing with a ball hitch requires purchase of our optional Ball Hitch Kit).

Optional steel work table on a DR log splitter

Heavy-Duty Steel Work Table

The RapidFire’s steel work table means no more stooping down to pick up split logs. After a log is split, the pieces remain at a comfortable working height, so there's no need to bend down to retrieve them for a second split.

Good, but couild be better

I have used the K28 Log Splitter for four years, splitting 4 full cords every Autumn. While it is certainly fast, it has one major drawback: the ram has a tendency to permit scraps of split wood to get jammed under the face of the ram. These scraps are not left overs from the previous split log rather they are from the log currently being split. This happens to me approximately once for every two hours of continuous splitter use. These scraps prevent the backwards motion of the ram, stopping operations. To remove these scraps embedded under the face of the ram requires the bolts/rollers securing the ram to the frame to be removed, the scrap discarded, and then re-bolting the ram/rollers to the frame - a loss of about 15 minutes each time it happens. This is clearly a design flaw that needs to be addressed,.

Buy This Splitter!

I split 4-6 cords of oak, maple, ash, hickory, birch per year and have used a hydraulic splitter for the past 15 years. I was getting tired of how much time it was taking to split wood and was considering even building some sort of a wood processor. After using the K28 for a couple weeks, I am convinced that it is much faster than even a hydraulic splitter with a quad split. Also, I had originally thought that the reviews that said it was fun to use were maybe a bit overboard, but... It is really fun to use, and I think it is because you are not paced in any way by the splitter. My kids, 8 and 11 love to help and we make a game and a race out of it now. I haven't done it yet, but I think we will be able to hit 3 cords or more an hour pretty easily. So now it will take me almost no time to split my firewood. This is a wood processor at a splitter price. One other thing, I did not buy the work table and do not feel that I am hindered at all, especially with two people splitting. Like the title says, Buy this splitter!!!

Really happy with the Rapidfire K-28

I own a 15-acre wooded lot and have a wood burner in one of my fireplaces. I cut, split and burn about 8 face cords of cherry and oak every year to supplement my propane home furnaces,. The DR K28 is perfect. It starts on the first pull and quickly splits even 24" diameter rounds. It allows the user to bust the tough rounds several times. It's honestly fun to operate and my two twenty-plus year old sons love helping run the splitter. I've had only one small problem --with the hollow steel hitch--my Massey Ferguson tractor broke the welds on the haul hitch, but I was quickly sent another free of charge by DR.

I bought this product online and was a little skeptical. The K 28 model exceeded all my expectations. I was worried through reading reviews that there might be some issues with the belt but I have not seen any problems as of yet. I gave it the thorough test of splitting seasoned wood and then testing it with fresh cut Greenwood. This thing is a beast it is actually fun to Splitwood. I tried 24 to 30 inch logs and it handled it no problem. Only downfall I've seen is that when the product got shipped it did not come with any engine oil so I'm glad I purchased the maintenance kit, but I figured for $2200 it would at least come with oil. As for the function of the machine I would highly recommend it to anyone this is way better than a hydraulic splitter and like I said it is actually fun to Splitwood. Highly recommend to anyone debating On purchasing this model over hydraulic. The worktable is a must I would not order it without.fantastic product glad I made the purchase

Spend More Time Repairing it, then splitting with it!

This unit has some major flaws. The bottom roller bolt keeps bending, I've replae it at least a dozen times. The roller itself shattered, and Dr replaced it and the bent handle. The handle is bent again and I don't thing the new roller is large enough to fully engage the gear. I wanted to return the unit before my 6 month trial was up, but I found out that that offer was not valid if you didn't purchase the unit from the website! I'll be calling support again for replacement parts and suggestions to maybe make this thing useful! The only positive is that when the bolt is not bend, it does spilt most wood well.

Super Fast!!! Small Scale Wood Processor

As a small woodlot owner, I have cut and split 5-10 cords of firewood annually for the past 20 years or so, for personal use. Splitting by hand mostly, or borrowing a hydraulic splitter at times from my neighbor. I contemplated buying a splitter for years!!! I researched various brands of single and dual action hydraulic splitters and even several small scale wood processers. This product seemed to be the perfect solution......speed of a small processor at the price of a quality hydraulic splitter!!! It's reasonable to expect a splitting rate of about 1-2 cords per hour with the operator and one helper working the table and keeping cut logs within reach of the operator. The work table height is perfect for backing a small utility trailer or pickup tailgate to during splitting so the wood can simply be pushed of the table into the bed, no need to rehandle. I definitely recommend this product to any homeowner, small woodlot owner or small scale firewood producer looking to save time.....and their back!!! Suggestions: 1. DR to come up with a 4-way removable wedge option to further increase productivity 2. Single wedge design to be about 2" or so taller to better handle larger diameter logs. 3. Consider including the 2-3" high sides in the table design or as an option (i.e. similar to older style DR Rapid Fire table) to keep split wood moving forward and prevent it from falling sideways.

i just got this splitter. it works great. As a mechanical based splitter, I hope it holds up. For anyone considering purchasing, here are a couple of observations since I just received this unit. First, get the tray. I can't see how the splitter is going to be useable without it. Second; the unit is incredibly heavy. Get help with delivery and setup logistics especially if you have to trailer it in it's 500 pound shipping crate. Everything about this splitteris awesome; I just hope it doesn't turn into a maintenance nightmare. I also own a DR Brush Mower and have no concerns about Country Home Products (DR Power). Awesome company to deal with.

Makes a winter chore, ahem - fun

The best part of chopping wood, for me at least, is getting out of the house, leaving the noise, and holding that cup of coffee in the cold air. The down side is that is takes forever. I wasn't sure if I wanted to make this kind of investment - but after the video I had to give it a shot. We will burn 8 cord and, yeah sure, anything that speed it up would be nice. But this thing is actually fun to use! I was a little surprised to be honest. The machine itself seems to be pretty rugged, but I will say the paint on the wedge started to come off almost immediately. But thats to be expected I suppose. I am just picky that way. Overall, great machine.

After watching the videos on the Rapid Fire Pro, I ordered one the same day. Received it several weeks ago and have been using it throughout the weekends to build up my firewood supply before winter. This kinetic based technology is a game changer, and the DR Pro is fantastic. Everything represented about this equipment in the video is correct. First, being towable was a real benefit, as my cabin is an hour from my home, and intentionally hard to access. The assembly was easy and took no more than 20-30 minutes. After adding oil and fuel, it started easily and quickly. I have been splitting well seasoned White Oak logs up to 20 -25 inches in diameter with no hesitation at all. The recovery rate is unbelievably fast. My buddy recently bought the larger 6 hp Rapid Fire with the electric start, and with the optional work table. This week we split a cord of firewood at his farm. Once we got our process down, it went remarkably fast. We were splitting 25-30 inch White Oak, Black Walnut and Cherry, again with no hesitation at all. I highly recommend the Rapid Fire splitters, and I am an advocate of adding the work table option, it greatly improves the speed when splitting larger logs into smaller more manageable pieces. I ordered one for my splitter yesterday. One caution about this kinetic based technology: it is so fast, it will work your butt off trying to keep up with it!!!

The DR Rapid Fire will split wood as fast as you can load it. With all hydraulic splitters you have to wait for the machine to recycle. The DR just doesn't have that downtime. That's what makes it incredibly fast and reliable.

Overall, I am very happy with my splitter. I have the feeling that the price is high and that as more splitters use this design, assuming that at some point they can, the price will drop. It is very easy to use and it needs the table. I don't think it would be half as easy without the table attachment. The things I don't like are small: vibration noice could be cut down in three areas...1) The cowling support at the back of the cowling to the frame should be 3/16 to 1/4 inch stock so it did not flap around, 2) The two assembly could be tightened or made rigid as it rattles a lot, 3) The belt tightener assembly should be kept tight again to avoid unnessesary rattle noise.,

Excellent performance

The Rapidfire Log Splitter we purchased has already proven itself, with fast, rugged performance through some of the hardest dry maple firewood you will ever find. We did have an issue with the pinion gear because of the extreme material we split, but customer service has so far been excellent, and a warranty repair is being handled. By the way, one pull on the start handle was all it took to fire up the engine. That was a nice surprise.

I am pleased with this splitter. I hoped the tray would be a better feature than it is, but it is better than not having the tray. I was hoping I could save split wood on the tray without having to move the wood for a longer time than I can. After using the product I see that my hopes were totally out of line.

Cannot go wrong with this splitter.

My review is like several others. Packed well for shipping. had to install the tray and hitch. Took about 30 to 40 minutes by myself. I recommend having a helper. Engine fired up and ran great with a couple of pulls first time and only 1 every time after. I went to work with it right away and I will just say - what a beast! In 1 hour I split what took over 8 hours to split last year on my hydraulic (tractor supplied) 28 ton splitter. I was going to keep it but after using this DR, its for sale!!! Here is why I did not give it five stars. The hitch is very difficult for one person to manhandle onto an ATV or tractor. DR. should design, and provide a hitch that has a friendlier jack instead of a two pin jack stand. I noticed in my tray installation instructions that the model used for the picture had handles mounted on the hitch area to maneuver the splitter around. How do you get those puppies? Lastly, do not skimp and pass on the tray. I would have hated it without it. DR, you should just make this part of the splitter and price accordingly. Tray is well worth the money. Like I said, the hitch stand needs redesigned...it would be simple. There should be a factory installed handle near the hitch for the user ease of attachment. Overall - this is now one of the best pieces of equipment I own and I am very excited about how much time is freed up for me to enjoy our mountain getaway. Next years wood is already piled next to this years...and it took me an hour to split it. Roughly a chord of wood (pine)...some 30 inches in diameter without a pause

When I purchased this splitter, I was hoping it would perform like it does in the ads, and it does. I split about 20 cords a year for firewood, and with the old hydraulic splitter, that took some serious time. This machine is faster by a huge degree. You can split the wood small, which just took too much time with the old splitter. The only round it would not split was a 32-inch, extremely knotty piece of pine; it has gone through everything else. Buy it! It is worth every penny.

Log splitter

The splitter starts easy and splits most logs. I have a 22 ton MTD splitter that I bought in 1996. Still works good but is slow. The Dr splitter is way faster. I have found 4 pieces of wood it won't split. I had to use the old splitter to split these 4 pieces. I wish they could figure out a way to make it vertical or horizontal. That would help a lot. I do recommend the optional tray. It will help if you have a bad back. You don't have to bend as much. I hope it lasts as long as my old MTD.

The idea of this splitter is great. It works well 85-90% of the wood I cut but has trouble with gnarly or slightly gnarly wood. Once the splitter decides not to split the log, well, you either try to keep banging it through or hammer the log off the splitting wedge.

Great Features - Could Use A Couple Improvements

Bought the Pro XL model late fall 2012. Split lots of wood with less than an hour of total run-time over the winter. This thing is AMAZINGLY FAST! One person cannot keep up with this machine. As a tool junkie, I really like the unique and simple mechanical design of the DR Rapidfire Log Splitter. There are a couple modifications i would recommend, however. Recommended Improvements 1) Extend the fingers of the towing arm so the pin hole is at least 3/4" farther away from the attachment nut. As it is, there are only a limited number of things you can hitch it to. 2) Increase the pin size to 3/4" so the thing doesn't bang around so much when towing. 3) Add a handle to the top of the towing arm so the user can move it around more easily. 4) Tell Subaru to support the muffler better. This is a DESIGN FLAW. After about 5 hours of use, the muffler broke completely off. No impacts. No duress. Now I have to take it back to the dealer, which is a hassle. I would rather they send me a replacement under warranty and I change it myself. Apparently, they have to do it or the muffler isn't covered under warranty. 5) As stated by someone else, this thing should be able to be towed on the road. We have multiple parcels on opposite sides of a river, requiring us to drive on roads to get back and forth. Putting it on a trailer every time seems like unnecessary added work. Make it road legal!

Disabled by splinters
Posted by: FireEaters from on 03/11/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
1) The pinion is easily disabled by wood splinters jamming underneath the ram. Because there is no real force returning the pinion to the start position (just a couple of long, flimsy springs), any mild force obstructing the return of the pinion will completely stop your operation. The stoppage can range from mild (pull out the splinters) to severe (disassemble the ram end of the pinion). 2) Technical support doesn't really have thoughtful answers. The first time our pinion jammed up, they told us to disassemble the housing over the flywheels. The screws on the houseing are flathead (bad design if disassembly/reassembly in the field is required) WE solved the problem with a chisel, freeing the pinion from the wood that was sticking into. 3) The tow hitch seems to have replaced the handlebars that we've seen in owners' YouTube videos. (Not allowed to post links in comments here at DR). But if you ask the dealer, tech support or customer service you get two answers: a) never heard of handlebars; or b) if you get the table option you don't get handlebars. However, the videos clearly show the handlebars mounted to the table underside, and my table still has the mounting brackets as an integrated part of the design. But even I can see that the tow hitch (a later design change) would be in the way of anyone trying to use handlebars. So now you either have to move this with your tractor/ATV or by brute force. The design should allow "homeowners who need professional power" to move the machine easily, without the need for other machines. Really is it that difficult to figure out how to do both? 4) A splitter this big really should be highway towable. It's 9 1/2 ft long and fills my longbed truck. Even with a liftgate on my pickup, because of the long length of this splitter it takes 2 people to load/unload quickly. (Or one person with a significant time investment and some ratcheting straps and/or a winch). Now we have to choose between loading lumber in the bed OR the splitter. OR, we can, once again, get another piece of equipment such as a trailer, in order to move the splitter. Seriously, this is a major downside compared to lower priced 2-way splitters from competitors with Honda engines. 5) Not sure if it's fuel efficient yet. We burned an entire tank of gas much faster than I would have hoped. We had heard you could split all day on one tank. But as they say, your mileage may vary. I believe we could adjust the throttle and do better. We'll see. The big plus is that there's a 6-month money back guarantee. So instead of being furious, I'm just annoyed. I know I can load this up and take it back to Delaware and be done with it.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on your older model Rapidfire. I believe you mean the rack when you say pinion. The pinion is the part that rotates & drives the rack/ram forward when the handle engages. The rack/ram is returned back by the return springs. Debris can get caught up in the springs & beneath the ram. They should be checked/cleared after each use & whenever the return isn’t happening like it should. The original WR1 model didn’t have a towing option at 1st, so it had the handles for moving it around. We later came out with an optional towbar after many people requested it. The 2nd generation (WR2) model did away with the handles as it had a standard towbar that extended past where the handles would be. The current model (WR3) had a redesign on the towbar and is now road towable. A full tank of gas should last about 4hrs. That’s a lot of wood split! Please let us how it works out.

As a fussy tool critic who has to have the best of any tool, I am completely amazed!

I ordered this wood-splitter several months ago with high expectations of performance considering the higher cost over hydraulic units. All I can say is it was well worth it. Not only does this thing split faster but the higher height with the table makes it much easier on my back. In fact its so efficient, I'm thinking of adding a conveyor elevator to keep up with the splitting. If you're thinking of purchasing a new splitter and you can part with a little extra cash you need to seriously consider this. Once more, I took advantage of the interest free financing and setup automatic payments electronically.

Do Not Buy Until Operating Lever is Fixed!
Posted by: mjmbme from Delaware on 02/06/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 1.00 star rating
I will start by saying this machine does work exactly as advertised - when it works. The operating lever mechanism is made of soft metal and bends when the machine is stressed. This disables the machine completely. They admitted this is a known problem and they are working on a fix. They couldnt say if it will be a recall for previously sold units. The original parts were shipped to us under warranty. We have used this only 3 times and the last two times it broke down early into the job. Parts were shipped quickly, but each time it took about 3.5 days to get them. About 7 days down time in exchange for what should have been about 4 or 5 hours work! And I am positive it will break down the very next time we use it. We have followed all directions precisely and carefully yet the end result has been a huge disappointment. DO NOT BUY UNLESS THEY HAVE REDESIGNED THE OPERATING LEVER MECHANISM TO INCLUDE SOME KIND OF A CUSHION!
Response from DR SupportWe apologize for the problems you have had. Thanks for letting us know about them. The handle has been redesigned on the WR3 model. Please let us know if you continue to have issues with it.

Awesome woodsplitter!

I have used the conventional hydraulic woodsplitter for years, and just have grown impatient with the cycle time. I saw this design and had to try it. Great Decision! SO much faster than hydraulic splitters. It does require concentration on what you're doing because it is so fast, which you can still get hurt with any splitter if you're not paying attention. So I don't see this as a big problem. It really does split wood lightning fast!

I purchased a Rapid Fire Pro XL (reconditioned 2012 model) two months ago. It has been able to split everything I have put on it usually in one pull, rarely more than two. I have had problems with the ram arm returning as advertised. This is disappointing as speed was a positive draw for this machine. Looking to have this resolved.

Fast, powerful, and almost fun!

I've had my Rapidfire Pro XL splitter for a few weeks and it has proven itself to be a very useful machine. It arrived well-crated and in perfect shape. It was easy to uncrate and assemble. Once set up, it is relatively light weight, yet rugged in construction. It is easy to wheel around by hand. I started by splitting some 24" dia. ash rounds which it did effortlessly. Next, I split a mess of Hedge (aka Osage Orange or Bodark). This wood is extremely hard and dense, but the Rapidfire powered right through it, even pieces with side branch stubs and crotches. I was able to easily split pieces I could never have split with a maul. I also split a bunch of Hackberry, a wood that is murder to split by hand due to its fibrous nature. Again, the Rapidfire had no problem cleaving it. The only issue I have had is that on occasion, thin splints of wood created during splitting can jam between the ram and the beam of the splitter, preventing the ram from retracting. I had to drive the ram back off of the wood shards by giving it a few whacks with a piece split wood. I have demonstrated the Rapidfire for several friends who have experience with hydraulic splitters and they were truly impressed.

Very Efficient

I used my brand new Rapid Fire for the first time this afternoon. I can't compare it to a hydraulic - never used one - but the RF was everything as advertised. I had a ninety foot poplar that came down last year during Irene that I'd cut and stacked right after the storm. Today I split about ten to twelve pieces, each about 16" to 18" long and 16" to 18" in diameter; a couple a bit beefier than that. The RF went through them like butter. I made probably 6 splits or so per log. I had them split and stacked tightly in less than two hours without rushing. The stack by measure is 1/4 cord. If you have experience splitting, hopefully that gives you an idea of the efficiency of the RF.

Ballistic baton!

Warranty / Customer Service word of mouth / Personable Service was my reason for buying this splitter. I have busted up 5 cord of knotted pine/spruce to date, slicing THROUGH knots not around them. You will never wait on the splitter because it is very simply too quick. My wife and I split one cord of wood in 55 minutes. The Subaru engine starts easily and is a fuel miser. The controls are very easy to use. Overall... this unit makes it enjoyable to split wood again. Thanks DR... you have an outstanding product!

Amazing Splitter!

Blowing the front seal in our hydraulic splitter for the second time sent me looking for another brand of hydraulic splitter. By chance I happened on the DR web site and watched several videos of their Rapid Fire Splitter and was impressed. I contacted DR and got the name of several distributors here in Ontario Canada. I contacted the closest one, W.E. Enterprises in Mississauga, Ontario and I could not have asked for a greater bunch to deal with than these guys. I was interested in a Model RF60EN which they had in stock. Picked it up on October 17/12, brought it home and put it to work. And work it did! This thing will split circles around any hydraulic splitter you want to pit it against. The old saying of "Slower than molasses in January" fits a hydraulic splitter perfectly when comparing it to the DR Rapid Fire. I wish we'd had one years ago.

Very Fast

This is my first log splitter. When I saw how much quicker this was compared to the competition I was convinced this is the one I wanted. I was a little concerned about the splitting power, but after cutting about 3 cords of seasoned and unseasoned oak wood I no longer think it's a concern. It has started with the first or second pull every time. I only have had two problems. The first was when I hooked it up to my ATV. The hitch pin supplied with the splitter is two small and bent the first time I drove with it. I trip to the hardware store solved that problem with larger pin. The second problem I had was cutting a log. A sliver of a piece of wood got wedged under the ram when extending out and wouldn't retract. I had to remove the ram to get it out. This took about 15 min to fix. I now make sure the track is clear prior to every stroke. I haven't had any other problems. I think it's a great machine. I do need to be very mindful of where my hands are when splitting because it is a quick action. This thing makes splitting wood fun. I do wish the tray was a little bigger and hooking and unhooking from the ATV is a pain with out a flip down jack.

This log splitter has no hoses, no pumps, no hydraulics and that is what I like best of all

We bought the Rapid fire to deal with the many trees that fell from hurricane Irene. To be honest, it was the warranty that made me try it. And now after doing everything I asked of it and more. I love this log splitter. In just a few weeks I split years of fire wood and I heat with wood. I move the log splitter to the wood lot on a small flat bed trailer. But now I don?t have too because DR now makes a hitch for this unit. I will be ordering a hitch for the Rapid fire soon.

Q.Is a trailer needed, or can a person easily pull the splitter by hand, say from garage to work area?
A.The RapidFire models feature a pin hitch for towing. You can also choose the optional ball hitch for these models. If you had no way to tow the machine, it can be moved manually. The tongue weight is approximately 90 lbs or so. Depending on how far you have to move the splitter, it may or may not be feasible for you. Another great feature of this machine is that it is road-towable up to 45 mph. This makes it very convenient for transporting. Thank you for your interest. fc

Q.Do you finance these machines?
A.Instead of a pump delivering hydraulic oil to a cylinder through hoses, seals and fittings, our Rapid-Fire Log Splitter uses nothing more than a pair of cast iron flywheels and a rack and pinion system. It is up to 6 times faster than using hydraulics. In 1.6 seconds, the ram fires the log through the splitting wedge and it automatically retracts in less than two seconds. In all, it is a 3.0 seconds cycle time under load. We realize the best time to buy a DR isn't necessarily the best time to pay for it. That's why we've put together a special interest-free financing plan. To learn more about the benefits of the DR Credit Plan, please click on the following web address:http://www.drpower.com/pages/content/customer-support/shopping-resources/easy-financing If you have more questions or would like to apply for the financing over the phone, please call Toll Free 1-888-550-0062 and a Sales Representative will be happy to help you. Q.Hello we are interested in your log splitter but some times we have logs that can not be picked up. Can your rapid fire splitter be used vertically? Thank you
A.Thanks for your question, The DR RapidFire can only be operated in the horizontal position due to the mechanical design rather than hydraulic design.
