Overview
K10 RapidFire

SIMPLER—the K22 has very few moving parts to go wrong - especially compared to hydraulic splitters with their pumps, valves, pistons, hoses, and fluid.

STRONGER—a 55 lb. flywheel spinning at 400 rpm stores energy from the K22's Overhead Valve (3.5FPT) DR engine.

FASTER—energy is unleashed via a rack and pinion gear, achieving a lightning-fast, 2.5-second cycle time (the time it takes for the ram to split the log AND return!).

Learn about the K22 Log Splitter (1:22)

Product Summary
  • 2.5-Second Cycle Time
  • Outsplits any 22-Ton hydraulic
  • Automatic ram retraction
  • Splits logs up to 18" long x 30" diameter
  • 3.5 ft-lbs torque OHV DR engine
  • 55 lb. flywheel
  • 2 Year Warranty (90 day commercial)
Features

55-lb. Flywheel

The K22’s cast-iron flywheel has more than double the weight and momentum of our K10 Model’s flywheel -- for splitting longer, larger, tougher logs.

Twice-Hardened Steel Pinion Gear

The Pinion Gear transfers energy from the Flywheel to the Ram. Industrial steel is case-hardened twice during manufacturing for bomb-proof durability.

Overhead Valve DR Engine

Our Overhead Valve DR engine produces 3.50 ft.-lbs. of torque – plenty of power for home use!

Auto retraction on a DR log splitter

Auto Retraction

With ordinary splitters you have to engage the return lever until the ram is back to its starting position. The RapidFire retracts automatically, leaving your hands free to load the next piece of wood for splitting.

16-inch DOT approved all-terrain tires on a DR log splitter

Easy to Maneuver

With a built-in handle and 11" pneumatic wheels, the Premier model is easy to maneuver around your property by hand. Or, purchase the optional Yard Towing Kit and you can tow it behind any vehicle with a pin hitch.

Optional steel work table on a DR log splitter

Heavy-Duty Steel Work Table

The RapidFire’s steel work table means no more stooping down to pick up split logs. After a log is split, the pieces remain at a comfortable working height, so there's no need to bend down to retrieve them for a second split.

iT'S ok, BUT ENGINE IS CHEAP
Posted by: STEVEN M. from LUDINGTON, MI on 04/13/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
I bought for my son last spring. We've used it for 2 seasons now, probably made about 3 full cords of split wood, mostly about 2x2 to 4x3. It's good for production because it's fast. However we've been disappointed with the engine, which seems to be of chinese origin. When brand-new, it ran fine, but the second season produced problems. Incidentally, it's been kept in a garage, so it's all in good condition. The first problem was getting it to start at all. It would run on starting fluid, but not by itself. A stiff dose of Sea Foam wasn't enough, so we took it off and cleaned the carb. After cleaning, it would run OK with no load, but the sudden application of load from normal splitting would make it die, as if the mixture were too lean. There is no mixture adjustment on the carb, just an idle speed screw. We were able to use it by running it with the choke on and we got our work done like that. When it ran out of gas, we found that it wouldn't restart. We checked for spark and saw none, so we put in a new plug and it started and ran until the gas was gone, then it wouldn't restart until we gave it another new sparkplug. We suspect the ignition is weak. While trying repeatedly to start it, the starting pull rope broke. We replaced it. Next, the rewind spring came unhooked inside the rope spool. We took it apart and fixed it. This happened several times because the hook bent at the end of the spring was too weak and would allow the hook to straighten. We called the DR company and they said to take it to an authorized dealer/shop, which was about 60 miles away. They would have done better to send us a new engine, which probably costs them about 50. The splitting machine itself has two flaws -- 1 the big handle will occasionally kick back hard against your hand due to the rack and pinion teeth being unable to engage. 2 If a sliver of hard wood gets wedged between the pushing ram and the rail, the ram won't retract and it's very had to get the wood sliver out. Have had to take the two rollers off which hold the ram down to the rail to loosen it enough to extract the sliver of wood. The second season, we spent almost as much time working on the splitter as we did making wood. They should use a name-brand engine and it would help their reputation a lot.

This is one of my best purchases in a long time. The splitter works great. Very easy to use and has split some very tough pieces of knotted up oak. Customer service during the purchase...Great! Customer service on some minor issues during shipping...Great! Customer service on operational questions...Great! Really feel like DR stands behind their product and are very easy to get a hold of and are very responsive. Good company. A model for customer service. Will be looking to them when it comes time to get a chipper:)

Forget the Hydraulic Splitters

I have split about one cord of firewood so far in about 1/4 the time it normally takes me. The only thing that slows you down is how fast you can put the next log on the splitter. I went through all types of wood and had only three logs that the splitter could not go through. I definitely wont be going back to a hydraulic splitter !

I heat with wood and needed a log splitter to keep up with my heating needs. The first unit that was delivered was damaged in shipping and DR made it right. They sent a new one plus the tow package! This is the second item I have purchased from DR with the first one being the lawn and leaf vac. (another great product) and I am very pleased with the customer service and the quality of the products. DR has earned my business and I will continue to purchase my power equipment from DR.

I picked up my splitter from the freight house last night. It took me about 40 minutes to put it all together, gas it up and add the oil and started it up. I decided to give it a good test on fresh cut iron wood. I've always had trouble splitting seasoned iron wood so thought fresh cut would be a good test. The machine performed just the way it was advertised once I got the rhythm of the ram down. I split about 3/4 of a cord in an hour and a half. I split pieces from 6 inches to 20 inches in diameter. Even through the knots I just had to hit the piece a few time to get the first split and then no problem. I had no issues with the belt coming off and the engine stopped only a few times when I did not retract the ram fast enough. The smaller width allowed me to put the machine anywhere I wanted and maneuver it through tight spaces with ease. Thus far I am very satisfied with the performance as well as the delivery method. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone for home use. I'm taking it to my son in laws this weekend to split his two cords of wood and looking forward to it. It's a great buy if you are thinking of getting a splitter. Just the initial cost of hydraulic fluid alone on a new hydraulic splitter would have been around $300.00 additional after paying more for the actual splitter than what I paid for the DR rapid fire. Excellent buy.

After splitting 6-7 cords of mostly juniper by hand for the last 5 years, I was tired of spending so much valuable time in the back yard. After looking at hydrolic splitters I just couldn't justify the cost. Hydrolic splitters are just too slow and constantly get stuck. This product has proven to work through the thoughest rounds and splits the wood faster than I can load it. It appears easy to maintain and doesn't use up much gas. So far, my only regret is not buying one sooner. Plenty of power also.

Machine has plenty of power to split through not only nice, straight-grained wood such as ash, but will also handle the gnarly, twisted stuff like hemlock and elm up to 24 inches in diameter. If it doesn't split on the first hit, whack it a few more times. I've found that on some of the bigger, nasty stuff, if you hit it and don't retract the ram fast enough, it will stall. No worries...mine starts right back up with one pull. Also will handle red oak and maple with ease. Take small pieces off the larger rounds buy spinning them and splitting the edges first, and then crack it down the middle. Now for the downside of this particular model: the wheelbase is entirely too narrow...and that's putting it lightly. It' a fine going slower than ten miles an hour on paved or even road...but take it through the grass and hit the slightest uneven spot or bump, and it will tip over very easily. Huge design flaw that will be immediately apparent to anyone who buys this model...machine is top-heavy. I'd love some feedback from DR on a possible design upgrade. I'd give it 5 stars if not for the wheelbase issue. The work table is a must-have..I'd say the same for the yard tow kit if you could tow the splitter without having to worry about it tipping over.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your thoughtful comments about our DR® Rapid Fire Premier Log Splitter. We are certain other customers will find your recommendations on how best to split tough logs very helpful as they evaluate their splitting needs. Regarding your concerns about the stability of the machine during towing, we too encourage caution while towing your DR® Rapid Fire Premier Log Splitter. Regarding the best practices in towing your DR® Rapid Fire Premier Log Splitter, the following is excerpted from your "Safety & Operating Instructions", page 5: • ALWAYS check before towing to make certain your Splitter is correctly and securely attached to the machine you are towing with. • ALWAYS allow for added length of the Splitter behind you when turning, parking and in all towing situations. • ALWAYS be careful when backing up. You could jackknife your Splitter if care is not taken. • NEVER exceed 3 mph. when towing your Splitter. • NEVER allow anyone to sit or ride on your Splitter. • NEVER carry any cargo on your Splitter. • Do travel slowly over rough terrain, on hillsides, and around curves to prevent tipping. • Do not tow the Splitter near the edge of a ditch or excavation. If your splitting needs include enhanced towing capability, please take a look at the DR® Rapid Fire Pro & Pro XL models, equipped with a wider wheel base, axles and wheels designed for road towing up to 45 mph with an available tow ball hitch kit accessory. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience with your DR® Rapid Fire Premier Log Splitter.

A Real Time Saver

A great product. Takes a couple hours to put together. Be sure and get the steel work table and the yard tow kit, they are well worth the extra money. It started right up and worked great the first time I used it. I wouldn't bother with the electric start option, it even started easy in 10 degree below zero temps. Have used it for about 5 hours and have had no problems with the belt slipping off or anything else. Been splitting elm, which is really twisted and tough, but the K22 handles it well. On large pieces (12+ inches in diameter) it takes 2 or 3 hits to split, or you can split it off center (chip away smaller pieces from the edges). Either way, if it doesn't split on the first hit you have to release the handle quickly or the engine will stall. You get used to this right away, but if it does stall it's easy to start up again. Maybe as the belt wears a bit it will slip instead of stalling the engine. It is very fast. You could have 2 people using it: one to pass the wood and one to run the splitter, and you still wouldn't be able to keep up with it. With the safety handle feature it takes 2 hands to run the splitter, so you won't be tempted to get your hand or fingers in the way, which is good because it's so fast. Can't really think of anything negative to say about it.

A good product flawed by poor QC

I own several DR products and have always appreciated their design features and quality construction. The K22 Rapid Fire Kinetic Log Splitter was a disappointment in both respects. Design elements that undermine the machine's usefulness are two. First is the lack of an adjustable idler so that the belt can be tensioned appropriately without having to fuss with moving the entire engine mounting assembly -- important because proper belt tension is critical to the effective operation of the machine. Second is the lack of a lip or groove on the flywheel to keep the belt from slipping off. In a typical one-hour session of log-splitting, I've had to remount the belt every 10 minutes or so -- both time-consuming and annoying. My worst complaint, however, has to do with the lack of quality control. When I received the machine, the shaft to which the flywheel was mounted was positioned about 1/2" too far to the left (to the flywheel side), such that the belt was so out of alinement with the pulley on the engine that it would not stay on for more than a few seconds. Technical Support was very responsive and explained exactly what I needed to do to fix the problem, which required removing both covers, the flywheel, and the set-screws holding the shaft in place, correctly positioning the shaft so that the right side was flush with the outer edge of bearing, re-tightening all of the set screws, remounting the flywheel, readjusting the belt tension, and then putting the covers back on the machine. Sure, it wasn't complicated, but why did I have fuss with all of this? As it turned out, the problem was visually obvious to anyone who knows how the machine is supposed to be set up, and should have been caught by the most cursory of quality control inspections. On the positive side, it works o.k. once all this was sorted out, with the exception of the two problems mentioned earlier. It is certainly fast, and good on everything except mesquite logs, which are simply too tough for it. The grinding noise that one hears on engaging the operating handle is due to the turning pinion gear engaging against an immobile rack and can be minimized by rapidly pushing the operating handle forcefully forward. Given the design, this noisy vibration is always going to be there, especially if the operating handle is operated slowly or with too little force. If DR can fix the problems I've outlined, from my perspective, they will have a really quality product. Kudos to DR, by the way, for their really thorough and very responsive Technical Support.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback. We appreciate hearing from our owners and certainly quality control and customer satisfaction is very important to us. Someone from our Tech Support Department is going to contact you by phone to make sure that your machine's performance is meeting your expectations. You can expect to hear from us in the next day or two. We appreciate your business and thank you again.

Great Size and Value

I bought the Premier because it was priced in the range I wanted to pay for a splitter and still have the speed advantage of the bigger DR model's. My only concern was if it was big enough to handle the broad range of logs that I had to split. The Premier easily handled 99.9% of what I split which was close to 1 cord. It sips gas and seems to have enough power. I was glad I bought the optional work table, it prevented excessive bending over which made the experience more enjoyable. My only gripe is the table should be standard equipment and come installed,so you can start having fun sooner.

Very Disappointed!

I should start with my satisfaction with my other DR product-The stump grinder. Works as excepted and as advertised. I started using my DR RapidFire Kinetic Log Splitter 9/17/2014.In the first 2 hours the belt flipped off 30 plus times when splitter hit resistance in white pine ash and oak. Belt was riding on the far right side of the flywheel (right side as you face the wedge). There was no obvious adjustments to center the belt on the flywheel. Called the DR tech support and was referred to a repair person in my area. Three days later belt was centered by putting spacings under right side of engine bolts and on the inside of shaft that holds drive pulley. The DR RapidFire Kinetic Log Splitter Premier K22 Model, Manual-Start does split wood with out knots and wood in small diameter. It however gets stuck and stalls the motor on ash, white pine and oak. This causes time consuming stoppage to remove stuck wood from the wedge and restarting the motor. The DR RapidFire Kinetic Log Splitter gets stuck and stalls on wood that is as small as 8" to 14" which is the largest I have tried to split. The advertised max diameter is 30". I have even cut the wood shorter then 16" that I normally cut for my stove. That helps slightly. I do have larger diameter wood-lots of it that I can't imagine going on this splitter if it chokes on 14" diameter wood. I like the speed of the splitter and the small engine sips the gas. But perhaps I should get the larger model.
Response from DR SupportThank you very much for the feedback on this product. We apologize for any difficulties that you might be experiencing. Someone from our Tech Support Department is going to give you a call in the next day or two. We certainly appreciate your business. Thank you!

Just got my splitter yesterday. I put it together in about 15 mins this morning. It started on the second pull and ran great. I was scared that this little thing would not have the power to split some of my larger logs. So far it has worked great. I have split Pine, Elm and Ash with no kickbacks and nothing that would stop the ram. I was very nervous about getting this splitter thinking it would not have the power. But it works great.

The is my first logsplitter that I have owned. I have never even used a hydraulic or any other splitter up until this point. It arrived today. I had it unloaded from the freight truck. I went ahead and paid the extra since the crate weighs a lot. The crate arrived very sturdy, just needed a crowbar to disassemble the crate. Took about 20 minutes to install the the attachments. I did not purchase the table however. After putting oil and gas in, it fired right up no problem. I had about 5 logs ready to go. All of these logs were 17" to 17 1/2" in length which only left about an inch or so of space. The RF had no problem. I was a little concerned with the HP however it split all of those logs like butter without ever being bogged down. It took just a couple turns to get the rhythm down with the safety lever and the handle. Overall it was easily learned. I had a nice little pile in no time at all. The best part is that I barely broke a sweat! I think this is going to be a great addition to our homestead and I also believe that DR did not skip on quality for this new smaller version of the RF series. The true test will be to see how it stands the test of time...cord after cord. Thanks DR.

I used my brand new Rapid Fire for the first time this afternoon. I can't compare it to a hydraulic - never used one - but the RF was everything as advertised. I had a ninety foot poplar that came down last year during Irene that I'd cut and stacked right after the storm. Today I split about ten to twelve pieces, each about 16" to 18" long and 16" to 18" in diameter; a couple a bit beefier than that. The RF went through them like butter. I made probably 6 splits or so per log. I had them split and stacked tightly in less than two hours without rushing. The stack by measure is 1/4 cord. If you have experience splitting, hopefully that gives you an idea of the efficiency of the RF.

Best equipment I have spent money on. Way more efficient with time and size of log splitting. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't have much extra time to split their wood for the year.

The DR Rapid Fire will split wood as fast as you can load it. With all hydraulic splitters you have to wait for the machine to recycle. The DR just doesn't have that downtime. That's what makes in incredibly fast and reliable.

Q.Can this splitter handle wood with a lot of knots in it?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The Premier RapidFire Log Splitter will handle logs with knots in them.

The massive flywheel acts like a giant battery, but instead of storing electricity, it stores mechanical energy. Its spinning weight is a force multiplier, accumulating energy created by the engine in between splits, then releasing it in a sudden burst. Any log is simply over matched!

Q.I saw a review reporting OK performance for pine, elm and ash with K22 Premier machine at $1200. I also saw a review about poplar but that can almost be split with a scout knife. How about red oak? I have lots of it and it is tough stuff!
A.Our K22 Premier Log Splitter is capable of out splitting any conventional 22 ton log splitter. We tested the splitter against a 22 ton splitter using a mixture of hardwood, which included walnut, oak, maple, cottonwood, gnarled and knotty pieces. Our Rapid-Fire splitter uses a solid 55 lb cast iron flywheel that powers the rack and pinion system which generates a large amount of stored kinetic energy. Due to the speed and force of the splitter, it is able to overcome any resistance of the densest, knottiest hardwood. The Premier log splitter has a 2.5 second cycle time under load with an 18' long splitting capacity.

This compact model will split cords of wood with less work in less time with the ease of mobility allowing you to take the splitter to any location around your property.

Q.You state that the splitter auto returns but in the video's the operator is moving the lever to return the pusher.
A.For operating the Rapid Fire Splitter there are 2 levers. One is the operator presence and the other is to move the ram forward. The lever on the top of the unit is the one for engaging the ram. Once the operator lets go of this lever, the ram retracts. It does not need to be manually pulled back to retract the ram. If the operator were to hold the lever down, the ram would stay out. The two handed use is a safety feature on our Rapid Fires as the cycle time is a fast 3 seconds.

Q.What is the maximum log length for the K22 model, and is the splitter wedge adjustable?
A.Maximum log length for the Premier Rapid-Fire Log Splitter is up to 18" long, although after testing, we found logs 16" to 17" long work best.

This compact log splitter is easy to store and move around by hand and is available in either a gas engine or a plug-in electric motor. There is also an optional pin hitch attachment to allow you to tow it behind a garden tractor or ATV.

Q.Does the kinetic log splitter come in an electric model?
A.We offer a quiet, clean, no fuss plug-in electric model of the Kinetic Log Splitter. The K22 Premier model is our most compact unit available with gas or a 6.7 AMP electric model.

The splitter is light enough to move around by hand or is yard towable by adding the optional pin hitch attachment to tow it behind a garden tractor or ATV. It splits logs 18" long and up to 30" in diameter, indoors or out! For more information on the K22 Premier Kinectic Log Splitter, please visit the following web link:
