20% More Power

The 11.5 Chipper Shredder represents a 20% boost in power from our entry model (the 9.5 model). That means it can handle branches up to 4” in diameter, and can shred bigger yard and garden waste too...up to ¾” in diameter. Plus, with double the number of shredding hammers, this model shreds material more finely—to 1/12 its original volume.

Chipper shredder chips branches and shreds brush

Chipper shredder chips branches and shreds brush

Maneuverable and Towable!

The 11.5 model is easy to maneuver by hand, thanks to the cut-out hand grips on the shredder chute. We also offer an optional pin-hitch kit that allows you to tow it around your property using your riding mower or ATV.

Features
Hopper

Oversized Hoppers

The shredder hopper opening is 19” x 13.2”, for easily dropping in leaves and prunings by the armload. The chipper hopper will accept branches up to 4” in diameter.

16 Hammers

12 Free Swinging Hammers

Shredding is accomplished by 12 free swinging “hammers” that mash and pulverize materials into a fine organic mulch that’s great for recycling into your landscape—either by tilling into your garden or feeding your compost pile.

Towing

Off-Road Towing

Add the optional pin hitch and you can easily tow the 11.5 Chipper with Shredder around your property using your ATV or lawn tractor.

Engine

Briggs and Stratton OHV Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the only ones we use on our DR Chippers. The 11.5 FPT Chipper Shredder uses a durable 250cc Overhead Valve, easy-starting engine. It features a debris management system that protects the engine from whatever you kick up while you’re chipping and shredding.

Chipper Knife

Pro-Spec™ Chipper Knife

Made of high-carbon/high-chromium forged alloy tool steel, our knives hold an edge longer than those on "bargain" chippers.. Still, as with any cutting tool, keeping a sharp edge is important for maintaining peak performance. We recommend keeping an extra on hand so you can minimize downtime.

Fantastic Machine

This machine does everything as described. It is a beast. The rectangular lower hopper lets me feed whole trees into the chipper with confidence. Like any powerful tool there is a learning curve. If the machine sounds radically different or jammed, turn it off immediately and investigate. If the new machine is super hard starting or runs less than full on max -smoothly, turn it off and go directly to remove and clean the spark plug and visually inspect the Briggs installed spark plug connector inside the rubber piece. Any problem with the engine, go right to the spark plug yes even if brand new!. Once I addressed the plug it has been running like a freight train, non stop. Assembly note: Install the tall feed hopper with the handle cut outs reversed facing away from tires stand and feed this hopper from opposite the tires, as before, by doing this you can avoid material getting lodged between the knife flywheel and the housing, I cannot overstate the importance of this. The operation manual should be changed to reflect this idea or the metal and rubber safety guard on the top hopper should be installed at factory on the opposite side to help prevent miss-feeding and potential jam. When feeding green leafy material, in either hopper, wait for all material to clear the lower screen on the discharge port before feeding again, let it run for a couple minutes if necessary for the screen to clear. Hearing, eye and hand protection are MANDATORY for life and limb protection. Other than that start chipping.

Hi All, I bought this unit and it seems powerful and works well so far. I added the tow package as it would be too heavy to lug up and down hills. So far I'm happy with the unit and the only downside so far is I think the companies service after the sale is lacking and I hope when I need parts they will do better than the service I have received so far.

Best money ever spent. This will make composting so much better. Love the hammermill...chipper combination. Having the hammer mill combination as allows me to shred to what ever size I need...if it's still to big I just reprocess the material the hammermill. You guys did good on this...need a cover for it now. Up the price and include the cover

waste to dust

This unit works very well, the issue we have is the dust created by dead plant material, different discharge screen would probably help this not creating as must dust. Unit has really cut down on the volume of our waste, which was the main reason for the purchase.Very well satisfied with the units operation.

Mediocre Consumer Grade Unit
Posted by: James W. from Sanford, NC on 06/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
Full disclosure: I just got mine today, and spent three hours this afternoon using it. I had issues upon initial startup that required replacement parts, and a flat tire that wouldn't hold air, but after fifteen minutes on hold, the good folks at DR Power got the new parts on the way. So, customer service gets four stars, and would've been five had my hold time been under ten minutes. The rep who helped me was awesome! First, the good. If you're patient with it, the machine does what it is designed and advertised to do. The not so good. The machine itself should be the entry-level model, at best. Within thirty minutes, the knife was dull enough that anything larger than 2 choked it. Either the knife should be more robust, or a more powerful engine should be used that can power through the rated material even with a dull knife. There is no way that one should be expected to change or sharpen the knife half a dozen times per day, and a machine rated for four inch material should barely notice two inch branches. The engine is more difficult to start than any engine of similar size that I've had on any power equipment in the last fifteen years. It always takes several pulls, whether cold or hot. It also likes to jerk the starter line out of your hand when failing to start, and it pops after it shuts down. The tow option should be standard. The machine is unwieldy, making relocating it more than a few feet quite the chore. Bottom line, it's definitely a consumer grade unit, and not a stellar one at that. That said, it will chew through lots of branches and small trees, just slowly.

Well built shredder and very user friendly. Easy startup, only took two pulls to start out of the crate. Shredder handled leaves, shrubs and branches from 1 to 3 inches in diameter with no problem. I’ve had the shedder about a month and used it a couple times without any problems. If looking for a shedder I recommend this one!

Machine is simple to set up and run. DR should provide the SAE 30 oil with it so it is more plug and play. An extra set of blades would be a plus. Overall the machine works well, and seems to be robust. I have about 25 hours on it and am satisfied with it. I would recommend this to others. Safety first!

Been using my chipper for about 3 weeks. Love it! I've already covered all of my beds in mulch. Went through piles of cedar like butter. Live oak takes longer, but still gets it done. Havent had a single problem. Only complaint was bad packaging. Box was destroyed, but chipper was fine. And the DR sticker is upside down on my hopper.

This machine is cool. It turns yard waste into a very fine mulch which I can use around the yard. Think I'm going to be happy with this product. So far have used for about 4 hours, and works nicely. Few hickups getting started: First, the original clutch burned out about 5 minutes into using this machine. DR sent out a replacement right away at no charge. I had to learn to replace it, which was frustrating for a new machine, but now I really know this machine so in the long run perhaps this was even a good thing. It's actually easy to do all the maintenance even with no experience as long as you're mildly handy. Other hickup is that there is more of a learning curve than you would expect. It easier to jam the machine especially feeding the shredder than you would think, but once you figure out how it is and isn't working then it does work really well. The specs say it can chip up to a 4 log. I'd say that is a bit oversold. That size will fit into the shoot, but the machine can't really handle it. 3 works if you go slow and the wood isn't too hard. Anything up to 2 or 2 inch just feeds right through beautifully. So, if your cleaning up branch trimmings this machine is great. If you really need to process full on logs 3 and up you might want to consider the professional grade chippers. Also takes leaves and food waste e.g. watermelon rinds and makes a nice compost pretty much instantly! The compost materials will work much better after going through this machine rather than just adding straight to the pile. I got this on sale. I think for the price this was a great value, so I hope to get many years of use from it.

It works well on branches but when it comes to palm fronds and more green items it really bogs down the motor some times killing it and becoming clogged.I wish they would have made this model with a bigger motor because I like the convenience of being able to move it around the yard by hand rather than having a hitch. With that being said I wish I would have purchased the next size up.

Great little machine

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We purchased 19 acres in North Central Idaho with a lot of deferred maintenance. We bought this chipper/shredder to help with the clean up. This is our first purchase of DR equipment. I've run the unit for less then 2 hours and already chipped four 32 gallon garbage cans of material. I set it up on a tarp to catch the material, and use a 5 gallon bucket to transfer it to the garbage cans. We plan on using the material in the garden. The machine starts on the first pull and has chipped branches up to 4, pine cones, and lots of smaller branches from pruning we've done. I was surprised how fast the machine chipped the material you do need to feed the bigger material in slower. Take some time to read through the manuals that come with it, there is a lot of good info. The shredder hopper was the only thing I had to assemble on the unit, everything else is done for you. We opted for the free shipping, and picked the machine up at the shipping dock. The unit is a bit of a beast to get out of the back of a pick-up. I have ramps that helped, just be aware you will need to call in some favors if you go with the free shipping option. I liked the quality of this unit. It's well built, and they put a lot of thought into the design. We like it so much that we ordered the self-propelled trimmer/mower as well and will be doing a review on it.

Recently received this 11.5 unit and immediately spent 2 straight days working on a wide variety of debris on the property. Both the chipper and the shredder worked exceptionally well, and the learning curve for figuring out the best utilization of the machine was very short. Any branch material under 3/4 especially of it's lengthy, like fresh brush is a breeze with the shredder - as others have said, just don't overfeed too much or too quickly - rely on the sound of the engine torque. The chipper mowed through everything I fed it up to 4, both old and new material - once again, just feed it at a reasonable pace and it does the job. Even with a designated weight of 185, the unit is remarkably easy to move around the property by hand. The free shipping to a local terminal was great my only complaint in the entire process is that the shipping prep/design is fairly shoddy. The unit is strapped to a pallet, which is OK, but the surrounding shell of cardboard, corner supports, and stretch-wrapping is woefully inadequate, so that the structure was falling apart by the time I picked it up AND the unit had received a small, but superficial dent in the process. Not a big deal overall, but it didn't project a sense of quality upon first inspection. Fortunately, even though it came dressed like a pig, it performed like a Swiss watch.

The chipper part of this works great and has no problem getting through branched up to 4 inch Diameter. The shredder part does not feed well. Putting piles of leaves through is a very slow process and you kind of need to push them along with a small branch. The Shoot jams with more then a handful. Overall its good just wish maybe the shredder part opened wider.

Chipper/Shredder Does the Job

I was getting a little bit peeved after I made the order. I ordered in October but didn’t receive the chipper until January. Was beginning to wonder. When it came it was in good shape. Took it home unpacked and put together it started right up on the first pull. After about 15 minutes the snap ring on the back end of the crankshaft flew off. I found the snap ring and three spacers and put them back on. The owners manual only shows two spacers. After a short while the snap ring came off again. This time I couldn’t find snap ring. I called service and they sent me another snap ring out. I questioned service about the three spacers and they told me it had to do with wear adjustment. The three spacers seemed awful tight so I just put two back on. Since then I’ve use the chipper for 12 hours with no problems at all. At this point I have to say that the machine works great. Everything that I have on my property is oak and I use it to chip right up to the 4 1/2” maximum.

I purchased this unit as a replacement to a twenty year old gas powered chipper/mulcher. This machine starts at the first pull and it powers through branches up to 3” without too much trouble. I have to manage the feed because for the thicker branches, the motor does slow down. There was one hiccup when I overloaded the hopper. However, clearing the clog was easy and straight forward. Just needed two half inch wrenches to remove a bolt and loosen another. The only issue I have is the hopper basket was damaged a little bit during shipping. I did not notice the bent upper lip until after I attached the hopper. Overall a great machine and highly recommended.

I couldn't be more satisfied with my DR 11.5 Chipper Shredder. Eats up anything that I've fed it without much effort. I'm glad I went with DR vs the cheaper brands. It starts every time with in two pulls and is easy to use. Very rugged constructed! I would highly recommend the DR 11.5. It's worth every penny!

Bought the 9.5 for our new acquired property spruce up. While it did what we got it for the scope of work dramatically increased. Was able to “trade-in” for this one. Wow! Pitch fork load of dry leaves is turned into fine mulch before you can reload. Recommend getting tow kit, maintenance meter and maintenance kit. Skip the step up go directly to 11.5.

DR Wood Chipper Shredder
Posted by: Daniel R. from Frenchtown, NJ on 10/18/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
The DR 11.5 Wood Chipper Shredder works very well, however it needs a bigger engine so that the chipper doesn't bog down when chipping. It is supposed to chip up to 4", but it struggles to chip a 3" branch. You have to feed it very slowly and pull the branch back numerous times to give the engine a chance to recover. Great for smaller branches. Shredder clogs very easy.

Well made but..........
Posted by: Scott W. from READING, PA on 10/09/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
Like others have said this unit is well made, it started on the first pull and fired right up but......... It will handle branches up to maybe 2 & 1/2" not the 4" that's advertised. I tried some hardwood that were roughly 3" and basically the machine stalled, had to shut it off and pull remainder out. Tried some Hemlock branches of similar size and the results weren't much better. It does handle everything up to 2" pretty well. I had a few issues with delivery that were not DR's problem but with the trucking company. Customer service was great, they stepped right in and helped get the problem resolved. Overall it's a decent machine, next time I would buy something that could handle bigger stock.

11.5 Chipper Shredder
Posted by: Jason R. from Sudbury, MA on 10/05/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
Order was shipped on time and in great condition. Shipped on a crate. Product is amazing and works as is described. I challenged the shredder with leaves and small twigs/limbs up to 1 inch. Handled it all just fine. Ran 4 10 to 12 foot branches up to 3.5 inches thick through the chipper with no issues. Generates great chips. Leaves are pulverized...likely 1/15 or more less volume if bagging. Chipping larger branches requires a little hand guidance but will do the rest of the work with 3 to 4 feet left. 100% satisfied so far.

Not what I expected
Posted by: CRG from Appleton, WI on 07/28/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
Have run this unit twice and multiple problems: 1) It bogs down on a 3 inch branch despite claiming it can handle 4", 2) Shredder jammed the first time I used it on a 1/4" brand despite claiming it can handle a 3/4" branch and 3) It is leaking oil. Sent a request to DR Power more than a week ago and haven't heard back. Not what I expected on a $1,200 purchase. May be going back!
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to contact us again, we do apologize that there was a disconnect with communications. A representative will be contacting you to trouble shoot and help resolve the issues you're having.

Solid machine for the money - not a toy!
Posted by: Lauren C. from Hanover, NH on 07/26/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I'm a repeat DR customer and like many others, I use owner reviews to help choose equipment I want to buy, so what follows is somewhat more detailed than the average. Starting with the construction of the machine, it is extremely well built - quality components and excellent fit-and-finish. The only thing I noticed during assembly is that most of the bolts could use another 1/4 to 1/2 turn of tightening, especially since this machine will generate a lot of vibration. Props to the engineers who designed this machine to use only a couple of different size bolts, thus very few tools needed to work on the machine! Note to potential buyers: unless you are in pretty good physical shape I strongly recommend investing in the pin hitch kit (more on this later) for towing behind an ATV or garden tractor. This machine is heavy and a but ungainly to move around by hand. If you do move it manually, wear gloves because the hand holes in the top hopper are a bit sharp. The weight, however, is indicative of the amount of solid metal used in the machine's construction and contributes to its stability so I have no complaint here. I chose the manual start and found after adding oil and gas it started on the second pull. It has started easily and run very smoothly ever since and has sufficient power for a machine this size. The manuals recommend hearing and eye protection and gloves - USE THESE! As to operation, here are some tips I learned from experience. First, the shredder does not like branches even well under the 3/4" advertised capacity especially if they are fibrous (stringy, like yellow birch and some other hardwoods). The machine will quickly wind these around the hammer mill and stall - that's rough on the clutch if you don't shut it down immediately. Then you have to pull the screen and extricate the mess. Not difficult, but time-consuming. I quickly learned to feed anything even vaguely "woody" into the chipper and the results have been excellent. I imagine plant materials, on the other hand, will shred very nicely along with spruce boughs and other softwood branches that I did try successfully. On the chipper side I learned very quickly NOT to hold on tightly to branches as you feed them into the machine! Depending on how the machine "grabs" the items they may get pulled in very, very rapidly. After a brief trial-and-error period I found it very easy to feed the machine with consistent results. Moral: just be careful! If whatever you are feeding into the chipper still has side branches these may slow the feed rate, so I keep a hand clipper in my pocket just in case. If things do ball up on the in feed, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try to push things in with your hand(s). Find another branch and use that as your push stick, again not holding on too tightly in case the machine decides it wants to eat that too. After a little time with the machine you'll find it pretty easy to anticipate and deal with such issues. A comment on the pin hitch kit: the instructions say not to use it when the machine is running because it may tilt the engine and cause damage (the technical term is oil starvation). Instead, they say to disconnect the machine from your towing vehicle and use the (well designed)stand that comes with the hitch kit so the machine sits level during operation. This, of course, assumes that you are working on level ground (a little humor here!). Sound advice, but if your towing vehicle has a low attachment point like mine does you may not need to take it off the vehicle to achieve level. Just sayin'... In summary, this a workhorse machine and a good value. Once I've gotten a few more hours on it I may come back and update my review. Enjoy, and be careful!

Orange Beast
Posted by: Andrew B. from Burke, VA on 07/10/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I just purchased this machine and it is an Orange Beast! I had a pile of recently cut pin oak branches with leaves still on. The largest diameter was about 2.5 inches. The chipper ate these like no one's business. I then cut about 25 box elder branches and the same result. However, the machine did start to bog down on 3 inch branches, and a 3.5 inch branch was slow going. I am very skeptical of a 4 inch branch unless the blade is brand new and the wood is a soft wood. I then moved to dries sticks that had fallen out of trees. The wood was a variation of white and red oak, box elder, and poplar. The machine started having trouble toward the end of the pile. No branch was more than 3 inches. The blade is now dull and there is a large divot in it that I don't think can be sharpened out. There were no rocks or medal in or on the wood. This is the reason that the machine did not get a 5 star. I did not even go through a tank of gas and used this for about 2.5 hours. Replacing a $50 blade so soon is a little disheartening especially when I was working with wood that was 75% capacity. The blade should last longer than it did - period. Also, I moved the machine once from the cut branches to the pile. I could not start it. I tried everything, but I think the awkward carrying position flooded the engine. Admittedly, I did not shut off the fuel switch prior to moving it. I eventually started it after about 15 to 20 pulls and it ran fine. I purchased the 11.5 instead of the 9.5 because I am a firm believer in getting more power than you think you will need. I was right and am glad I purchased the 11.5. Overall, solid machine, awesome performance with a new and sharp blade, and don't know why I haven't purchased one sooner.

Exceeded expectations
Posted by: Brian D. from Waterbury, VT on 07/05/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
This chipper shredder exceeded my expectations. Fast and easy to use. Creates very useful mulch and wood chips. However, I recommend doing research before shopping with DR. I returned the 9.5 chipper shredder (also very good) to upgrade after seeing an ad for a "new" 11.5 model online. Not realizing there was two different models, DR sold me this older model which is no longer for sale less than a week after I purchased it. Product is very good, but I would have been happier if DR told me about the newer model available for the same price.

Q.What is the Horsepower rating of the 11.50 chipper/shredder?
I borrowed a 6 HP machine and it seemed underpowered, I don't understand the new rating system for briggs & stratton engines. Thanks
A.Briggs and Stratton is no longer allowed to rate their engines in Horsepower and therefore we can not claim a Horsepower rating for them. There is a formula to convert between Horsepower and foot pounds of torque based on the running RPM's of the engine. Generally speaking, the fpt rating of an engine will usually be a higher number than the HP rating so if I were to estimate (based on the fpt:hp ratio of engines from other engine manufacturers), this engine is probably somewhere between 7-9 horsepower. More importantly, we test our products rigorously and so long as you stay within what the machine is rated for and properly maintain it, you should not encounter an issue with the machine being underpowered.

Q.Can you sharpen the hammers? How hard is it? Is the Chippper blade changeable?
I currently own an old WW Grinder Super Tomahawk chipper Grinder. When I bought it you were not in business. Now I can't find replacement parts. I am on my third engine. It has been welded like you would not believe. I hope that yours can withstand the abuse these things go through. Some woods are extremely dense and even in small pieces challenge most chipper shredders.
A.The 12 free-swinging shredding hammers can be rotated and flipped 3 times for optimal usage before needing to replace them. The chipping knife has the potential to be used for 20 hours without having to be sharpened. The knife can also be easily removed and should be sharpened professionally.

Q.Is the shredder direct drive or belt driven?
A.This machine is belt driven from a centrifugal clutch on the engine shaft to a pulley on the flywheel shaft. The shredder hammer assembly is driven by the flywheel shaft. Using a centrifugal clutch in this assembly helps make the machine easy to start because the engine does not have to turn the weight and resistance of the flywheel shaft assembly upon start-up.

Q.how does the unit work with fresh brambles and vines, some with soil on the roots?
A.Our Chipper/Shredder should not have an issue with fresh vegetation as long as it falls within it's shredding capacity. Soil as well, should not be a problem. If the soil is on the sandy side it may dull the knives slightly faster but it will not harm the machine.

Q.Does the premier 11.50 chipper/shredder come with a bag?
A.There are no attachments for the 11.50 Premier Chipper/Shredder. The chips and shredded material discharges from the bottom. The material is greatly reduced from a sprawling pile of cuttings, branches and garden waste to a smaller volume that is easily manageable to rake. To move elsewhere, one could utilitze a tarp to catch the debris. This model also has built-in hand holds that easily rolls around your property.

Q.Can this shredder handle waste pecan nuts among leaf/branch debris?
A.The DR Chipper Shredders are designed to chip or shred only certain organic debris found in a yard or lawn. This type of debris consists of branches, leaves, twigs, vines, brambles, grass clippings, flower petals, etc. Unfortunately, nuts of any kind will not get processed either by shredding or chipping. A DR machine that does a great job with nuts and other lawn debris is the Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. They have tremendous suction, mulches and shreds as it goes along. Q.Will this machine handle Pampas grass?
A.The 11.50 Premier Chipper/Shredder has two hoppers, a chipping knife, a rotor mechanism and a screen located at the bottom of the shredding chamber. The screen prevents the material being shredded from escaping until it can fall through the holes located in the screen.

The shredding rotor mashes and pulverizes shreddable materials such as weeds, garden cuttings, all types of grass clippings, leaves, and other flexible stuff. Shredding capacity is .25" in diameter and and the chipping capacity is 2.5" in diameter. It features a low-profile hopper for easy filling and easily rolls around your property with the built-in hand holds.

Q.Can this unit handle bedding such as straw foe horse stalls?
I would like to find a device to shred baled straw and blow it into a horse stall. It would be nice if the unit could have a flexible hose which could attach to the outlet so that the shredded straw could be directly spread over the stall floor. While we are at it - Do you have a unit which would be able to vacuum up the straw after the horse has manured and urinated on it? It would be a good bit heavier and quite wet in some areas.
A.The DR Chipper/Shredder will shred up the straw, however, there is not a hose attachment for blowing it into the stall's. We do not offer a vacumm system for cleaning up the stall's. Please contact us if you have any more question's.

Q.How well does it chip hard dried limbs I have several large heaps of spruce limbs that were cut 5-7 years ago after a large infestation of bark beetles.
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Chipper. As long as the diameter of the branches does not exceed the 4" limit, there should be no problem. It will be able to handle the hard, dried spruce limbs. I would recommend a spare knife since the branches have been sitting for so many years. There is likely dirt and small stones that could chip the knife. Having a second one on hand will minimize any downtime due to this. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
