Overview

Easy Trimming Right from your Tractor!

Harness the power of your tractor for trimming and mowing along roadsides, fence lines, walls, and other long distances. The DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower allows you to trim effortlessly while you ride in comfort.

Trimming long fence lines or mowing roadside ditches can mean a lot of time on your feet with a handheld or walk-behind string trimmer. For properties with exceptionally long fences to keep tidy and roadsides to maintain, the DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower is the easiest solution! Ride in comfort while the tractor-mounted Trimmer Mower whips your property into shape.

Trim weeds and high grass within a whisker of fence posts, walls, and other obstacles as you simply operate your tractor. The spring-loaded mowing arm automatically deflects around obstacles, so there's no worrying about leaving spots untrimmed or damaging your posts. The 23" diameter steel guard allows you to safely trim within a half-inch of any obstacle. You can even adjust the amount of resistance they place against obstacles.

The pivoting deck is ideal for roadsides, pond banks, and any other areas with uneven ground. It allows the trimmer head to follow the contours of the turf, leaving it trimmed and tidy. And the adjustable-height anti-scalping wheel prevents damage to the ground. Cutting height adjustment gives you precise control over the height of the remaining grass. And don't worry about tough weeds – the DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower accepts 155, 175 and 225 mil cord for slicing through tough weeds and grass.

In order to ensure proper cutting and discharge of material, it is recommended that you not exceed 2 mph while trimming with the DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower.

Note: When purchasing replacement cord for this model, be sure to choose either the Quick-Lock 13" Pre-Cut Cord or a bulk cord roll.

Very Poor Performance and Support
Posted by: Howard C. from RIVES JUNCTION, MI on 05/14/2018

I purchased this product mainly to trim the creek banks that run through my lawn. I continuously had problems with the belt jumping off of the pulleys even after making the adjustments suggested by Support. After the third time, the belt broke. I was shipped a new belt and followed instructions but the results were the same. When I attempted to return the product within the warranty period, the shipping cost I was given was ridiculously high. Consequently, the unit sits in the back of my pole barn collecting dust.

Not impressed with assembly workmanship

Shipping was fast. As I put the trimmer together I heard a rattle in the frame. Took cover off and a loose nut was there. Didn't appear to be on anything. As I assembled the PTO shaft, the allen screw to hold the shaft to the gearbox was missing. Got another screw. Mowed for 1/2 hour and appear to work well, then just quit. The pulley on top of the trimmer head quit spinning. Took it apart and there is now key holding the pulling to the shaft. It's just missing as was assembled without it. Have to go out and find a key to keep mowing. Wondering what else I am going to find now.

Had some issues right out of the box.

The trimmer had a couple issues upon arrival. A grease seal on the gearbox was incorrectly installed. I had to seat it correctly. Minor. One cap on the driveline u-joint was cracked and required u-joint replacement prior to use. Had to replace wheel bearings after 10 hours of use. Finally, I ordered the 225 mil sawtooth trimmer string to have extra on-hand and found that the 175 mil blue cord lasted much better while cutting raspberry canes. Also found that an alternative brand of square trimmer string listed as 155 mil thickness was same size as 225 sawtooth and lasted longer than the DR 225 sawtooth cord. Overall, the machine adequately performed while trimming raspberry canes alongside the crop rows. It would work well for occasional use, but I suspect it will require heavy maintenance to stand up to continual commercial use.

What can I say. After unloading the 3 pt mower, I was trimming my ditch in an hour. Easy to set up & put together, just read the instructions. U need a chop saw to cut the shafts to the right length (hack saw would take too long) & multiple tools to put together. Don't forget the grease gun, fill the transfer case & grease everything it says. BTW, the string is real easy to deal with, just find the right one for what your trimming. I'm having fun with my new toy.

Learning curve wasn't too bad. After you get used to the action of the machine. Highly recommend a foot controlled hydrostatic tractor. Wish the line would last longer. But, I was cutting heavier stuff. I like the cutter. Works as advertised.

I ordered the 3 point hitch string trimmer because I have about 3 weeks of string trimming every year on my property. I am 75 now and I want to minimize my time swinging my heavy duty brush cutter. The pallet arrived at Yellow Freight in Portland and the cardboard part was crushed but everything on the pallet looked OK. I got it home and lifted it out of my pickup with a 1/2 ton hoist I have in my garage ceiling. Assembly went OK. I measured the PTO shaft and per instructions I was to cut two inches. I decided it was time to order a set of Pat's Quick Disconnects. I would like to make it easier to change implements. These took about 3 weeks to arrive and they are pretty cool. I remeasured the shaft and no need to cut it. I don't have any implements that require a PTO so this is all new to me. First the u-joint is like a shrink fit on the gearbox shaft. I had to insert a crowbar in the u-joint and pound on it with a short handled mallet. Finally got it on. After straining for a couple hours I could not get the other end of the PTO on to my BX24 output shaft. Then I noticed the safety chain is too short. I unhooked on end and tried again. No luck. Next morning I discovered it's really a three step process. 1-get the slots in the u-joint lined up with the slots on the tractor shaft. Pause. 2-push in the button until it stays in. Pause. 3-push the u-joint in until the button pops out. Stop and drink a cool glass of water. The plate that holds the strings was in upside down. Once I flipped that over I could put in the green strings. From the directions I have no clue what the maintenance position is or how to achieve that configuration. Anyway. I got it all set up and 2 hours later my week long choir was complete. The wheel collects a great tangle of grass which takes a long time to untangle. I bought a couple of 3/4" galvanized washers and added them to the assembly. Probably a shear pin would have been better than the 5mm key but whatever. It's important to slow down the RPM when engaging the trimmer. Also I bought some golf cart mirrors and put them on my tractor to keep and eye on the trimmer. The BX24 is 48" wide so the trimmer is way out to the right. This is great. All in all: pretty good design.

Very good quality product for the money. Follow the directions and use common sense when operating and it will be a back saver over what ever you are using now. Go slow and keep in mind it is a trimmer NOT a mower and it trims 20" @ a time. Worth the money.

aggravated

Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
This is the most aggravating piece of equipment I have ever owned. First I was not aware that it would not work with a sub compact tractor. I had a Kubota BX1850 tractor and there is not clearance for the pto to clear the frame when it is picked-up. I traded this tractor for a Kubota B7800 compact tractor which is a larger frame tractor. this gives more clearence from the pto to ground which allows for the clearence between the pto and implement frame. Now it works as advertised. The only problem is the string does not last very long. I,m using the larger size. The machine is a good idea, but more imformation should be given about it concerning the tractor. Giving the horse power is not enough. My BX1850 was enough HP, but tractor frame size is what is important.

This may be early to review this product, but I have assembled it and used it. This is my 3rd DR tool purchase. I am totally pleased with the first two, but I've not been thrilled with this 3 point mower. It looks great in the video running along a smooth grassy fence line, but I have a gravel road and the results are not anywhere similar. First of all, the instructions leave a lot to be desired. Once past assembly I found operating suggestions to be pretty slim. I tried calling customer service but they had little to offer and getting someone on the line was a long wait. Right now I'm feeling that this tool is for a smooth grassy fence line and not a road with runoff ditches. Now that I've spent the money I will continue to try to make it work, but I appear to be on my own.

The item works good, takes some getting use to, the bolt in the head was loss and all the parts come off as soon as I started using it. Luckily I was able to find all of them and get it back together. One of the string holders would not take string, had to take it apart and reassemble correctly. Don't like the wing nut on the swivel point, needs to be a locknut, nothing to keep the wing nut from backing off. Had to cut the pto shaft length to work on my tractor. Pretty simple to assemble but make sure you check all the bolts for tightness. Also had to add lubricant to the gearbox.

Perfect for nice smooth ground; not so much for rough terrain. QC and fit need to be checked before shipping. Had to file and grind a few areas in order to assemble. Needs a clutch and a better belt. Cutting head picked up a coil of hidden barbwire that suddenly stopped the head and snapped the belt during the second use. Replaced the broken belt with a much much better belt. Looking at how to incorporate a centrifugal clutch. Also looking for a way to better stabilize the cutting head so that when the tractor leans to the left the cutting head will stop scalping the ground. This is a powerful machine that needs a few modifications to make it better.

We are into our second year of using the PTO trimmer and are more than satisfied. We are using this machine to trim under two miles of guard rail with steel posts. One person is doing the work of three and no one is getting sick due to contact with poison ivy, wild parsnip, etc. We need to change the strings often but no big deal. Tried all the string options and the blue 155 mil. outlasts all the others. Be sure to properly set up the PTO shaft and expect a bit of a learning curve.

3 Point Hitch Trimmer Mower That Works Great

Before purchasing my new DR Trimmer Mower, I did a lot of research and read everyone's review of the mower and researched the product. After that when I saw the refurbished Trimmer Mower on your site at a great price, I had to order one for me. When I received it, before the first use, I read the entire owners manual and followed all of the instructions when putting it together. Also I made sure to remove any side to side movement in the 3-point hitch as another reviewer had advised. Because I read the manual, my first cut with the Trimmer Mower was great. I highly recommend using the red string when cutting tall grass and weeds 1/2" in diameter. Changing or replacing the trimmer string is very easy and when inserted, the string stays in place. The Trimmer Mower is very easy to hook up and connect the PTO shaft. I am using mine to cut along my drive way in the NC mountains and I was very impressed. I would recommend this product to anyone as long as they only used on a small tractor 30 HP or less and they read the owners manual prior to the first use. I truly believe that I had good success with my Trimmer Mower because I read the manual and read all of the reviews of problems from other people. This is truly a great product that really works great. Thank You DR.

Not a bad product. Does the job I bought it for. I've used it on the fence line and around the pond. Cuts the work time down from before using a hand trimmer. There are some improvements that it needs. A solid rubber tire would be better then the tube type that came with it. The wire guard doesn't protect the trimmer head from jamming. Other modifications could be made for better operation. But, over all a good product. No regret in buying this.

It is very important to make sure that the 3 point frame is in the correct position and that there is NO swing from your draft arms. While doing the first test trim with my new trimmer, the draft arms swung downhill which caused the PTO shaft guard to come in contact with the frame and almost instantly sheared the guard in two.

I will do another review after I spend more time on it. also it is cumbersome to hook up would work better wit two people.

I read the reviews before purchasing the unit and was not expecting it to furfill my needs at my ranch. Being that I have Over 7000 feet of fence line. I decided to take a chance. That being said I did cut one field and was surprised at how long it took me to cut one side of the fencing I experienced no problems with the string failing. It actually worked quite well. My ranch is hilly and the unit gave me no problem. I will stay that there is a learning curve to learn how to use the trimmer. I have a kubuta bx 25hp w a bucket and am new to running the tractor. It takes a while to line up the tractor and get the trimmer exactly in the middle of the high tensile wire once I figured out the righ angle cutting was a breeze. Being that this unit was the PTO version it had no problems cutting grass 15" tall and thin brushy weeds. The only problem I experienced was that the unit that held the trimmer wire came off twice while driving on rough gravel /dirt road leading to field. Hopefully DR tech guys can teach me how to tighten said part on better. Overall it exceeded my expect ions and would not want to cut my fence line by foot!

It's not what I expected, it has a hard time cutting the wild buttercup on the first cut. I have found it takes 2 to 3 passes to get a good cut. It seems to lay it over before it cuts clean. Iy doesn't work any better than a bladed mower. The advantage is ths swing away when hitting rocks. Will continue using it and see if I can improve the cutting a ability.

3-Point Hitch Trimmer Mower Disappointed

I own several pieces of DR equipment and I must say that I'm most disappointed with this one. I have fairly level ground but the string continues to break every ten feet, plus it does not even whack the weeds. I have tried it several time in an area the has less weeds and it still doesn't work. I had thought about sending it back before the 90 days expired thinking I would get better results but was wrong. So I guess I'm stuck with$1,000 spent for nothing. Thumbs Down on this one.

First attempt - had to add additional spring to hold unit along fence line. If ground is not very smooth, which it isn't where horses walk fence, trimmer gets stuck in holes and wont follow fence line. Second attempt - weeds and grass now quite high - in first creeper gear, string would last 50' max. Constantly throws string out once you hit anything bigger than 1/4 diameter. Noticed new improved design available for purchase. I think older unit string holder should be replaced by DR. Third attempt. Started trimming - 10' later unit stopped, drive shaft flew off pto shaft- front u joint spider cracked and blew apart. Looks like this weekend I'm back to manual weed whip as grass and weeds are out of control... sure glad I spent all that time and money on this.
Response from DR SupportThanks for the review of the 3 Point Hitch Trimmer (FT1), we appreciate it! We apologize for the issues you’ve had.

To your points, we had a larger volume of sales than anticipated so it was shipped later than we wanted. As the Anti Scalp Wheel is attached to the main body, it will cause the body to swing backwards when the wheel meets too much resistance such as a hole or rock. The trimmer head has changed since you purchased your model to the Quick Lock style. We feel this does hold the cord in more securely & of course changing the cord is much quicker.

We will get in touch with you about these issues. We’re sure we can find a result that gets you using the trimmer again. Your suggestions will get passed on to our people for future consideration. We are always happy to hear from our customers on how to make a good product great!

Could be better

It's awesome when it's working, but so far has been a bit disappointing. Our terrain is several acres of fairly flat fence lines for horse pasture. We have this on an older kubota with 19hp PTO. Assembly was easy enough though I agree with others that shear pin protection makes more sense for a tractor implement. It took a few tries to get the implement dialed in - no problems there. So after the 1st day of mowing, our mower ball is wrecked. ( It fused to the spacer). Additionally the rod which guides the implement is bent so the implement does not "return" or follow poles correctly and now does this odd whiplash thing. This mower is great in concept, but I'm concerned about long term durability. I'm of the opinion the designers didn't accurately take into consideration the hp and torque that would be involved for use behind a tractor.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review! We’re sorry for the issues you have had with it. Hopefully the replacement parts have you back in business. We appreciate hearing from our customers any comments/suggestions that will help us improve our products. It sounds like you gave it a workout!

We returned our three point hitch mower today, it could not handle the rough grounds of the cattle fields. We do have a walk behind DR what we like and i was going to ask for a equal value trade on the return guarantee, but they deduct 'free shipping' from your returns so out of the $1K that I spent, I am only getting back $600 on my trade therefore I will not order another machine
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that Fence Line Trimmer (FT1) didn’t work out for you, but do appreciate you posting about it though! We will let our Engineering Dept. know about your comment about the performance on rough grounds.

We will contact you for more info & hope that this instance hasn’t turned you away from considering us in the future. We welcome the opportunity to earn your trust again.

This is an awesome implement. I am very pleased with its performance. I even got a bonus when I discovered the "maintenance position". Nice feature that I had read about, but did not fully understand until I assembled it. I recommend this implement to anyone with fencelines or treelines to mow.

Going Back- No good for Ponds/Lake Banks or Large Cedar trees
Posted by: VIC M. from WARRENTON, MO on 06/29/2014
Rating: Product Review Stars: 1.00 star rating
I have 14 acres with a 4 acre pond and numerous large cedar trees. After researching the 3 point hitch and its advertised uses I thought this would be a great tool. I purchased the item for cutting the pond bank and under 15 plus cedar trees and several ditches, no good for any of those task. First, does not have the side reach to trim around pond edges. Simple math (which I did not think about) while turning slightly the rear attachment will swing away! You cannot trim around a round lake driving forward........cannot trim under trees while driving forward..... Second the reach is was way to short to do any good, as advertised ideal trimming is in a straight level area.....any thing else this tool will not perform. Third any slight bank and irregular terrain the tool will not perform it just will not operate properly. Fourth, the adjusted for angle trimming is completed by removing a large bolt, unless the unit is perfectly flat removing that bolt is difficult, inserting the bolt in the slot for angle trimming does not work well. Again, fence lines on flat even terrain is the only thing this tool may be good for. Of course at no time while ordering the tool was I warned about this, when asked what I planned to use the tool for and I told the representative the response was sounds like a perfect use for the tool. This was a very costly trial...........
Response from DR SupportThanks for taking the time to leave a review about your Fence Line Trimmer (FT1). We’re sorry it didn’t do the job as you expected.

Some of the issues you mention make it sound like your tractor may be on the larger size. Ideally, the distance between the rear wheels should be 40”-50”, but can be as much as 80”. Obviously, the wider it is you will have that much less of an extended cutting reach. You will need to experiment with cutting angles when going around trees/rocks etc… because as you mention trying to take a right hand turn will pivot the trimmer away from the intended cut. It can be used on banks with up to a 20° slope. Again the width of the tractor will determine how well the reach/angle will be.

We do appreciate you providing such good detail. We will call you to discuss this further.

Seems to be a nice machine. Had a steep learning curve but after i got it adjusted and used to it it cleaned up my fence line fairly wel. My main issue with it is that i can't pick it up very high untill the pto shaft hits the cross bar. Needs a taller gear box to raise the input shaft which will give it more clearance on the pto shaft when raising the threempoint hitch.

Great for what I need

After a bit of a learning curve, I am very satisfied with this machine. I have pretty level land, with about a mile of 4-board horse fence over pasture grasses (perhaps the easiest use-case for this trimmer). Some hints: 1. I run with the transport bolt in place (as recommended), so when I get to a ditch or beaten-down horse path along a fence, I can raise up the cutter with the 3-point. Adjusting the wheel keeps the cutter ball head from digging in and the string from trimming dirt. 2. Open the metal gates before going past them! (duh!) 3. I found that when I run into something that easts a few inches off the end of the cord, I can simply adjust the cord so one end is still long enough to trim near the post, the other is not doing much. Seems a waste to throw out a cord with only 2" gone. 2 string ends work well enough until I get back to the barn. With the new design for the cutter head, there might be a better way to do this. 4. I run this on an old Kubota B1750 (15.5 PTO HP) and there is plenty of power, and the small size of the tractor allows me to keep a good eye on where the cutter head is. I had thought of using it with a bigger tractor (40HP New Holland), but there would be almost no visibility. 5. Don't mow rocks. They win. 6. Don't expect that you are going to clean those tufts of grass that are right up against the fence post. I can fully understand those who have trouble with slopes and irregular ground. It's not really the slope that is a problem, it is a change in slope - as in those paths (ditches) that the horses hammer into the ground along the fence lines. Looking at the machine on the web, I had questions about the strength and build quality. After seeing one at the local dealer, I was (and still am) very impressed with the quality and heft of the thing.

This piece of equipment will save me thousands of dollars in labor cost each year. When you have as many miles of high tinsel fence as I do & the road frontage that I do there is a lot of weed eating to do all summer. The only problem I have had is the PTO shaft at the gear box, has a set screw and key way. This should be replaced with a drilled hole all the way through the coupler & the shaft with a shear pin in it or a bolt. The line sent to me worked good. If you have real tall, tough grass it will take 2 passes to get it really clean. I wished that I would have had one of these trimmers years ago. Anything can be improved upon that is why you have engineers. If you ever decide to make a modification to the problem at the gear box, please contact me so I can make arrangements to retrofit mine. Thank you. RNP Tennessee
Response from DR SupportWe’re glad that the Fenceline Trimmer will save you big $$! We are sorry about the set screw coming out though. We appreciate your suggestion about the gear box connection & it will be passed on to our engineers.

Product needs improvement

A fine concept but should of had much more testing. The line breaks easily and is difficult to replace. The 3 point hitch does not lift the trimmer high enough to easily access the mow ball to replace line. PTO shaft will hit the crossbar on the 3 point hitch unless extreme caution is used when lifting the unit. The PTO is connected to the trimmer and held in place with a machine key and secured with a 4mm allen head set screw. Should have a shear bolt fastener. I have already had to replace the key on my trimmer and have only had the machine a couple of weeks. I have it on a small Ford compact tractor and it barely clears the rear wheel. Would work better on sub-compacts.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review of your DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer. We appreciate you taking the time to do this!

Let us give you some ideas on how to help with the issues you are having.

In our testing here at DR we had the best results with cord life when the cord of the trimmer was eased into the grass and weeds slowly. This allows the very tip of the cord to cut the grass. This definitely holds true when cutting a long neglected fence line for the first time when the grass and weeds may be real tough. If you go too fast the cord can wrap around the tougher weeds causing it to break or pull out. Once the initial cutting of the tough stuff is done, our test crew found they could pick up the pace on subsequent cuttings. When the time comes to change the cord and you find that the trimmer head does not raise high enough for you by just raising your 3 pt. hitch, two people can set the trimmer body to the maintenance position as described in the manual. One person must steady the trimmer as the other installs the bolt. This will put the trimmer cords at just about head height.

As far as the trimmer clearing the rear wheels of the tractor, we recommend that the width of the tractor be no wider than 80” ideally much less, about 40”-50”. I am not sure of the rear wheel width of your tractor, but you are correct that with a smaller tractor the trimmer will reach beyond the wheels farther. Generally, any compact or lawn & garden sized tractor is fine, but larger tractors can definitely be used as long as you keep under the 80” rear wheel width.

Thank you for the idea of attaching the PTO shaft to the gear box shaft with a shear bolt. We will pass this along to our engineers for a possible change to future production. In the mean time, the set screw and key should work fine to attach the PTO shaft to the gear box. If you keep having trouble with the set screw staying place, some Loctite can be added to the threads.

We will contact you concerning the issues you are having. Thanks again for leaving a review. Your comments will be passed on to our Product Development department for review.

Update to previous review

This may be helpful to some, hopefully. I have used this for a couple months now, one of the first couple hundred sold. I had terrible results with the 175 cord, tried DR's, Sears brand that I use in my walkbehind from them. Called and spoke with a tech about the cord breakage and cord loss before you trim very far, heated discussion, I've been a mechanic for 30 yrs., build much of my own equipment. After some hairpullin I decide to try some 105 cord that I use in my handheld, much better results, they last much longer and I believe the reason is because they are more flexible and spool up quicker. I was able to mow some pretty tough weeds and heavier grass and the cords didn't break off at the head like the 175 does. Unit works much better on the flats than in the ditches, another customer said about the head digging in and I found the same issue, but around the poles( wood and metal ) it trims nice as long as it's fairly level ground. I debated sending the unit back but came to the same decision as the other customer, I would lose more than save. I just wish this would have had more field testing before production. And then 2 months after I bought one of the initial units they drop the price by a hundred bucks, do you have a 6 month price match, I'll think more and see if I can get a rep to do a demo before my next purchase of a like piece of eqipment.
Response from DR SupportThanks for leaving a review about your DR 3 Point Hitch Trimmer, it’s appreciated! We’re sorry you have had an issue with the Cords breaking. We do still sell the 130 MIL Orange Cord in addition to the 155 MIL Green & 175 MIL Blue Cord. Perhaps the Orange will work as good or better than the 105 MIL you are using? We’ll mention the smaller size to our product testers for future consideration

As you mention, the optimum terrain type is flat. Some areas may need a different approach angle. The slower you go, the better the cut will be. You shouldn’t go over 2 MPH while cutting. The 3 Point Hitch Trimmer has 3 positions for cutting. The first is a fixed position to be used on level ground. The second allows the machine to pivot roughly 20° up or down from level and requires more operator attention. This is for working on sloped areas such as around ponds or along ditches. The last setting allows the machine to free swing up and down. This setting is more difficult to operate and should only be used if 20° is not enough of an angle.

We can have Customer Service contact you about the price match you ask about. Thanks again for leaving a review. Your comments will be passed on to our Product Development department for review.

Does not work with thick grass
Posted by: Mary931 from Alabama on 09/18/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
I purchased this product with high expectations since I had long heard about DR mowers. I have a farm with lots of fencing and very thick bahia grass. I found several things: 1. The lines broke off in a space of 25-50 feet. 2. Once the lines broke, you had to have another person with you to help change them since you could not hold the mowing head up and lock it up at the same time. 3. The springs were very weak for thick grass. The grass would pull the mower back and change the orientation to the fence, so it was difficult to stay at the correct distance. I adjusted the spring, but it still was not enough. 4. Even when I could get the distance from the fence corrrect, the mower did not cut well around the posts. I did not try to cut anthing but grass.
Response from DR SupportThanks for sharing your observations about the 3 Point Hitch Trimmer. We like to hear how our products are working out there!

The Trimmer Head should be eased slowly into any brush/grass being cut for the first time. Going in too fast can cause the cord to wrap around the brush/grass and pull the cord out. Subsequent cutting will likely be faster. That is surprising that with the tensioning springs adjusted, the grass was still able to push the trimmer away from the fence. The max speed while cutting should be 2 MPH. Perhaps you were going faster? We would love to talk to you about that issue.

Changing the cord will require 2 people if you can’t get the head high enough. If you are alone, maybe a small ramp you could store on the tractor or a high spot like an exposed root that you could drive on to get the head up a little higher would allow 1 person to change it?

This product does not do well on ground that isn't level
Posted by: Rocky99 from Ohio on 09/13/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
I bought this product to trim a creek that runs through our property as well as to trim around a large number of pine trees. To start with to connect this product to my Ford 8N was not without its challenges, Once it was connected I had to figure out a way to "stabilize" the 3 point hitch, the hydraulics works well all the up or down but if you try to leave it somewhere in the middle it will "drift" up or down on its own. Once I cleared that hurdle, it was time to try it out. Our ground is not very level and the wheel on this trimmer acted like a pivot point, if the tractor went through a dip the cutting head would go up in the air or (and this was the big problem) if the tractor went over a hump the cutting head would dig into the ground. When circling a tree in an attempt to trim under it the trimmer followed the turn of the tractor and did nothing under the tree. I'm guessing if I were to drive straight, close to the tree and make multiple passes I could have trimmed around the tree. Now on to the creek. I moved into position to trim the creek, I started the PTO and started moving down the creek. The mow-ball dug into the ground and within 30 seconds (you can tell by the sound) the cords were gone. This is when I decided this product was not for me. ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT. The 6-month trial does not make it risk free, I paid $1,060.00 for this product (including shipping), but to send it back I have to pay for the shipping to me as well as back to them, a total of $420.00. So, if I send it back I will have spent $420.00 and have absolutely nothing to show for it, needless to say this does not make me happy. Buyer beware.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review of your DR 3 Point Hitch Trimmer. Thanks for doing that!

The Ford 8N is an oldie but a goodie. It was made from 1947 through 1953. One item of concern is the lack of a “live” PTO. Hopefully you have an Overrunning Coupler for it?

Different landscapes will require different attack angles. We’re not sure which of the 3 settings you had it in while trimming the Creek? The first is a fixed position to be used on level ground. The second allows the machine to pivot roughly 20° up or down from level and requires more operator attention. This is for working on sloped areas such as around ponds or along ditches. The last setting allows the machine to free swing up and down. This setting is more difficult to operate and should only be used if 20° is not enough of an angle. You would want to go very slow in this situation. The max speed while trimming is 2 MPH and while slowing down to 1 MPH doesn’t sound like much, it is half the speed! The Trimmer Head should be eased slowly into any brush/grass being cut for the first time. Going in too fast can cause the cord to wrap around the brush/grass and pull the cord out.

We apologize for the confusion over our return policy. If a customer returns a DR branded machine to us during the 6 month trial, we ask that they pay the shipping to and from their residence.

I've been using your products for 24 years now from brushogs to string trimmers to backhoes. I've been hoping for this product for years. I have several miles of fencing, both wood post and rail as well as steel fence posts with hotwire. It takes me many days of hard work going up and down the hills with cutters and string trimmers. This product does all my fencing, and cleans tight around the posts so I have no other cleanup to manage - and it's fast. First time through, it ate a few of the strings, which I anticipated. But once it's cleaned and I have only the new growth, it lets me stay on top of it. I have a nice 28 hp utility tractor that works well with this product. I like that you've carried all the quality features of your walk-behind trimmer into this design.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review of your DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer. We appreciate you doing this! We’re glad you finally got something you have been waiting for.

Like you mention, the 1st time trimming can snag the cord if you go too deep or fast. The max speed should be 2 MPH. You may need to slow down or make multiple passes the 1st time cutting?

Thanks again for leaving a review. We’re glad you are enjoying it!

Probably works well in the conditions shown in the videos

I bought the trimmer primarily to mow around my pond and dam. My tractor is almost too large, measuring 72" from outside of tires. This doesn't leave much reach beyond the tires. I have had to creep up on the pond edge to determine a safe distance. After a few hours I can make it work, but I travel very slowly. This may improve with practice. Also, I broke 5 of the 6 sets of cords very quickly. I now have switched to a 155 mil braided cord which seems to last longer and also is easier to secure when you tighten the loop. The cords that came (175?) seem to resist being pulled into the adjacent ring as easily. Maybe the smaller cords are better protected in the notches. (Excuse non-technical terminology) My final arrangement is to lock the cutter in the fixed position and set the wheel at max height. However, the instructions did say you would need to experiment to find the best setup. I have not tried the swinging function around fence posts. I'm guessing this would work very well on flat, straight runs as shown in the literature. Finally, I actually attached the triangle frame to the mower first and then to the tractor after fighting the alignment as shown in the instructions.
Response from DR SupportThanks for your DR 3-Point Hitch Trimmer review. We appreciate you taking the time to do this!

It does sound like your tractor is on the larger size for width. As you mention, 72” doesn’t leave a lot of space between the wheel & cutting edge of the Trimmer. The max overall width of the tractor rear wheels that this can be used on should be no wider than 80” & ideally much less, about 40”- 50”. This Trimmer can be used on any tractor with a category 1 hitch running at 540 RPM’s on the PTO with a maximum of 45 HP. Basically, a Lawn & Garden or Compact Tractor. The distance from the center of the PTO to the center of the Cutting Head in its forward most position is 40”. With the 25” cord installed, the cutting edge extends to about 51”. The Optimum Impact Zone as labeled on the Deflector Guard is from 45”-51”.

The 2 main sizes of Cutting Cord that we sell are 155 MIL (Green) & 175 MIL (Blue). Both should work fine and sometimes the smaller size does better than the larger. We also have a 130 MIL (Orange) that can be used. The main consideration should be to make sure the Cord “locks in” securely to the Mow-Ball assembly. The Trimmer Head should be eased slowly into any brush/grass being cut for the first time. Going in too fast can cause the cord to wrap around the brush/grass and pull the cord out. Max speed is 2 MPH. You may need to take more than 1 swipe to get it all.

I can imagine going around the pond with a larger Tractor could be interesting depending on the slope! The Trimmer does have 3 settings.

I’m not sure what the issue mounting the 3 Point Bracket was, but the lower Draft Arms do need to be able to spread to 32” to be able to slide onto the lower Hitch Pins. Some other linkages may need to be loosened to accomplish this.

Thanks again for leaving a review. Your comments will be passed on to our Product Development department for review.

overall good value, easier than pushing a trimmer/mower

After ordering and finally getting unit, started putting together. First issue was the driveshaft was stuck together, had to put in vise to get it apart. After filing the rough metal from male and female ends adding grease ( it came dry ) it slides great. Gearbox end won't fit on, more burrs to remove. Front u-joint assembled backwards can't grease unless you distort shield and wedge u-joint inside shield then jam grease hose onto nipple. Quality control on this part was lacking, should be checked before shipping. The set screw for the gearbox end as far as I can guage it is 8mmx1.25 w/female hex, every hex wrench in my arsenal of tools slipped when I barely got it snug ( you don't want this end coming loose ) , I switched it out w/ quality metric fastener, tight now. Hooked up to the tractor next, works ok but I definately think a better string fastening system could have been devised, lost a couple before I really got to the fenceline, trims good, definately easier than pushing a trimmer, fairly easy to hookup if you put a little muscle to it, have to lift it on the pins. The other issue I have is the three point cradle is a little light and if you transport with the wheel off the ground and hit a hard bump I believe you will bend this frame because I can flex it with just my hand pressure. Main unit has great fit and finish, maybe the driveshaft is subbed out and that was the delay for delivery after ordering weeks previous. All said I feel this is a good quality unit that maybe should have had a little more field testing before production started.

3PT DR Trimmer needs modifications
Posted by: RWB1 from Texas on 07/30/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
Received our 3PT Trimmer Mower yesterday. Like the trimmer mower there is a learning curve to use this product. We are still learning and this is an early review without the learning experiences. After testing it under various conditions we came to the following conclusion. Works well on flat fence lines. Works poorly where the fence adjoins a ditch. Specifically, the ground significantly slopes down from the fence line.Seems to work okay on banks that slope down from the tractor. I'd have to agree with the previous review regarding a drum mower type mower ball, but I don't think the metal blades are necessary. Both the DR Trimmer Mower and the 3PT version could benefit from this mod. My recommendation would be to modify an aluminum mower ball with a 10-12" plate shaped base and a sealed bearing. The mower ball would rotate and the plate would slide along the ground and rotate based on ground motion. This would also allow the 3PT mower to back-up slowly and eliminate the current limitations. The rear wheel needs to be able to be dynamically moved up and down. Only way to do this would be a hydraulic or electric linear actuator to be effective. I don't think a spring would work. Needs some type of parking stand. I can get it off, I don't think my wife can.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review, we appreciate it! We like to know how the products we sell are performing out in the field. We’re sorry it didn’t work well in your ditch. The 22” cutting width & size of the trimmer can make it difficult in a narrow ditch.

We appreciate your comments & they will be passed along to our Product Development department for review.

I bought this machine to mow fence rows around the pasture here in the rocky foothills of the Ozarks. I've gone thru 6 strings and haven't even made it out of the yard! I recommend a replacement hub similar to that of a disc mower, with metal blades. Until I can buy or build such a hub, this machine is pretty much worthless to me.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review to our website. We are sorry to learn you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of your Fenceline Trimmer. We do now have a Quick Lock Head that should solve the issue with the cord.

Q.Can the string be substituted with a blade?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The Tow Behind Trimmer/Mowers are designed for trimming with the cord only. The blades would get damaged very quickly as you have much less control over the Trimmer head on the tow behind models than on the walk behind models.

Q. My question is will the 3 Point String Trimmer/Mower work/mount to a quick hitch system such as John Deere's iMatch?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The 3 Point Hitch Trimmer/Mower is designed to attach to a standard 3 point hitch on a category 1 tractor. Required distance between base three point hitch arms is 29” for bolts to be secured in the operating position. Lower arms have to be able to spread to a minimum of 32” to accommodate mounting to A frame.

The quick connect iMatch hitch system will not work with the 3 Point Hitch Trimmer.

Q.How can you adjust the pressure for the arm to swing around obstacles? I planned to use it in a vineyard and if I hit a vine it needs to retract easily and then swing back.
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR 3 Point Hitch Trimmer/Mower.

You can adjust the amount of resistance on the spring-loaded mowing arm so it does retract easier, although there still will be some pressure applied to the vine as the spring tension will need to be strong enough to pull the weight of the machine back into position. The Trimmer weighs 225 lbs. We are currently offering a 1 year hands on trial which will give you a lot of time to decide if this will work for your vineyard. The current offer is good through 8/10/2015.

Q.What diameter weeds will it cut i have poke berry stalks growing along my fence and heavy briars
A.Hello. The diameter will be determined by the cutting cord you choose. We have three different sizes; 155 mil green cord that is great for cutting grass, 175 mil blue cord (more aggressive and spiraled) that is great for heavier weeds, and our most aggressive 225 mil orange sawtooth cord. If you are cutting down the poke berries when they are still green, I would recommend the orange sawtooth cord. Please feel free to call in and talk with a sales rep about your property needs if you have any other questions. They can be reached Monday-Friday 8am-8pm, Saturday 8:30am-5pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm (all times are Eastern Time) at 1(800)687-6575

Q.3Pt Trimmer mower reconditioned: Q: have some concerns as to performing to my application, trimming perimeter around pond with uneven ground & pasture fence lined with uneven ground due to hooves, both cattle & horses. If i'm unable to make unit perform to my satisfaction how are returns handled? Are there return shipping or restocking fee's? Mixed reviews as to durability of string lasting when cutting cat tails, swamp grass & mixed pasture grasses.
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR 3pt Trimmer. This unit sounds like it will be a great fit for your needs. The 3pt Trimmer has an anti scalping wheel that is adjustable and helps prevent damage to the turf as well as ride evenly over the divots you're describing. If for any reason you are unhappy with the machine during the trial period, you would need to contact our customer service department. They would set you up with a return. You would receive a refund, less the cost of shipping both ways. We recommend saving the packing material that it is shipped in if there is a possibility that you may not be keeping it. The 3pt Trimmer comes standard with the QuickLock head. This head will accept the orange Sawtooth cord, which is 275 mil. The strongest cord available. This cord will be able to cut through your heavier vegetation. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

Q.can I use this against a chain-link fence and along side buildings?
A.Thank you for your question. You can certainly use the Three Point Hitch Fence Line Trimmer on chain-link fencing and along the side of a building. Just be aware that the more contact the cutting cord has with something solid, ie the fence or building, the faster the cutting cord will break down. Please let us know if you have any questions.
