Overview

More Power, Wider Cut, AND Power Steering!

If you have larger areas to mow–or if you just want to get the job done faster–move up to our 16.5 HP PRO XL-30 model. It features a 30"-wide cutting deck (vs. 26" for our 10.5 HP and 14.5 HP models), so you cover more ground with each pass. The 500cc Briggs and Stratton power plant steps you up to a Professional Series engine, so it will easily handle the extra torque load over the long haul.

Best of all, the 16.5 HP model also includes independent disc brakes on each wheel. You can feather the uphill brake on side slopes to improve the machine's tracking and traction. Plus, the brakes enable you to Power Steer the wider, heavier deck with ease!

Premier model brush mower cuts 8-foot tall weeds, 2-inch saplings and 4-foot tall grass

Product Summary:

  • 16.5 HP Electric-Start Engine
  • 30" pivoting brush deck follows contours of ground
  • Power Steering: independent disc brakes on each wheel for super-easy turns
  • 3 forward speeds, 1 reverse
  • Oil pump for better performance on hills
  • Accepts all optional attachments
  • See Features and Specs Tabs for more product details

Features

Power Steering (:41)

Power Steering is Easy on You!

Our disc brake system provides Power Steering. Each wheel is equipped with its own brake, operated by a hand lever. Just squeeze the brake on one side, and the mower will pivot easily around that wheel. You’re in control...without wrestling the machine!

16.5 HP Briggs Professional Series Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the obvious choice for our Walk-Behind Field and Brush Mowers. The PRO XL-30 16.5 HP model features a Briggs Professional Series OHV engine, with full-pressure oil pump (great for positive lubrication even on side slopes), a spin-off oil filter, 500 cc of displacement, cast-iron cylinder sleeve, and easy, turn-key electric-starting.

30" Wide-Cut Pivoting Deck

The 30" deck is wide enough for fast field clearing, but is still very maneuverable. Unlike rigid, fixed decks found on some mowers, the DR deck pivots from side to side, allowing it to follow the contours of rough terrain. This feature minimizes scalping and improves traction.

Superior Mulching

Our decks are enclosed on 3 sides, so that cut material is chopped and re-chopped, reducing grass and brush to a fine mulch. This means less material is left behind in your field, and none of the windrows you get with side-discharging mowers.

Gear-Driven Transmission: Lock it in and Rip it up!

Unlike hydrostatic drives, the DR's geared transmission lets you lock in your ground speed, leaving your hands free to steer the machine across uneven terrain (instead of fussing with touchy throttle controls as you go). With 3 forward gears, you can choose a fixed pace that’s right for you.

Big, Lugged Tires for Sure Traction

No other brush mower has tires like this. They’re the biggest (18" x 6.5" x 8"), they have superior lugged treads that pull the mower through or over just about anything, and they are sealant filled...which means they’re highly resistant to puncture. Tough as nails, apparently!

Custom-Made Blade Spindle

Made of 1.375" thick cast iron with oversized double sealed bearings, the blade spindle is integrated into the deck housing and reinforced for vibration-free performance. Designed to provide years of maintenance-free use (and abuse!).

Commercial Grade Electric Clutch

Our industry-leading, self-adjusting clutch is designed for easy access and quick swapping out of optional attachments. After 245 hours of testing we only used up 10% of the life of the clutch. There are no cables to stretch or idler pulleys to get out of adjustment.

Attachments Add 4-Season Versatility

Thanks to our quick-change coupling system, the DR’s brush mowing deck can be swapped—in just minutes—with one of our optional PTO attachments: a 42" finish mower, a 30" snow thrower, a wood chipper, or a 42" grader blade. It's like owning 5 machines in one!

Built to Take a Beating

Field and brush mowing is a bruising business, and underbuilt mowers don’t survive long out where the tough stuff grows. We frame our machines with heavy-duty, laser cut steel, and reinforce key stress spots so you get a product that will withstand years of use and abuse.

Adjustable Handlebars

A comfortable working height is important, especially when traversing rough terrain.

Ergonomic Controls

Both on the control panel and on the grips, all DR Field and Brush Mowers controls are designed to optimize operator comfort and minimize hand fatigue. Everything you need is right at your fingertips, so there is no walking around the mower to make adjustments.

Heavy-Duty Powder Coating

Our frames and decks are finished with a tough, durable powder coating that resists scratching and promotes long life.

Used the brush mower as soon as I uncrated it. Cut down heavy weeds and brush as described. Electric start is nice for this stage of life. The oil lubrication system on the XL-30 is a must for the rugged up and down terrain of the Canadian Shield terrain here in Ontario.

Brush cutter does a good job, we have some hills with heavy brush and small trash trees. You have to go slow on the small trees and brush clumps but it does a good job of clearing everything. It would probably be a little quicker if my ground was all flat. Overall it does what I needed it to do.

So far I’ve mowed about 2 acres of thick, tall brush and overgrown grass. Surprisingly it never bogged and ran very well. It doesn’t use much gas as I’ve made sure to use pure gasoline with no ethanol. Time will tell on durability. The shifter doesn’t engage very smoothy but I’m hoping that will break in. The sales price was about right for this mower. Crate shipping was well done.

I purchased this mower to knock down a field that has not been mowed for about 3 yrs. The field was hip night with all sorts of grass. DR.ate this field up. NOW THE CAUTION PART: This mower is like any other, it well bog down and shut off due to the weed being to high. So When you hear the mower bogging down just push down on the handel bars, which will raise the deck So you can keep mowing. That should not have to be said, but you know....

Pro XL-30

Very well-made piece of machinery. Manual easy to read and follow. A few criticisms, though: 1. power steering is a bit of a misnomer it's brake-assisted steering 2. although the spec claimed this could cope with 6' grass, etc., I found it was a little underpowered for thick meadow grass and light brush—maybe I should have bought the 20HP version, but the spec could have been more realistic about this 3. when the mower gets bogged down, it stalls out—and this fact and the technique for how to deal with this should be in the manual e.g. after restarting the motor, it helps to tilt back the mowing platform before engaging the cutting blade, so that the machine can then eject the clogged-up grass matter and resume cutting.

Upon receiving product the oil dip stick plastic holder had been assembled in such a way the spinning fan cut through it. But the company helped me to fix it. I have been using it to cut 4 foot high grass, small bushes and brush. It just eats it up. No other issues.

It worked just like your videos. I have had several neighbors want to use it. What would normally take 2 or 4 workers with weed whackers two days to complete took my son 4 or 5 hours to accomplish. I am very satisfied with the Brush Mower.

Very rarely have I had a product exceed the claims made in commercials but that has been my experience with the DR Field and Brush Mower. I recently purchased a 29 acre trout ranch with 5-10 acres in thick brush and weeds. This thing plows through those weeds like butter! I may be your most satisfied customer ever!

HI, PIcked up DR at trucking company Estes. Started it up and engaged handle to go & no go, belt off. Very disappointed. After about 2 hours negotiating with DR it was decided that I had to take the DR to Ragens Hardware about 30 miles from here and it was repaired promptly and correctly. Shame on you for not even testing DR before shipping. Almost sent it back. Hope this is the LAST issue I have with it.

All that I expected

After retiring and moving to our 20 acres it was time to do something about the brush that had been accumulating for the last couple of decades in our five acre woodlot. The trees are widely spaced enough for the brush to grow but too close to use a tractor and brush hog so the field and brush mower is ideal. I'm not talking just any brush but primarily well-established nootka roses that are dense, woody, and have nasty thorns. Because of how thick the growth is the mower deck can ride up over the plants, but lifting up on the handles or backing up and running it in again usually works. Pulling the cut stems out of the way also works well. However, that being the case, I am still exceptionally pleased with the machine. There is no second best or alternatives that I know of as brush hooks, weed whackers with blades, or anything else just can't excuse me cut it. Nothing slows this machine down and where the brush is thinner it rips through it. I'm a couple acres into the job and I can without any hesitation recommend the Pro XL-30 with the 16.5 HP model.

Great machine!

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
First, let me say my Pro XL-30 is a fantastic machine. It eats up thick meadow grass, willows and even sage brush with little hesitation. Everyone who has seen it in action has come away impressed, I've even had strangers stop by to ask about it after seeing me use it along my roadway. I refer them to the local DR dealer where they rent can one to try it out. After almost 2 years of ownership, I do have some suggestions to make it better though. When mowing around and underneath the manzanita on my property, the branches have pulled out wires and the oil dipstick several times. I fabricated a brush guard from some scrap steel and expanded metal screen which bolts to existing holes in the framework and works well. My other issue is that the brush bar that the mower deck skids on wore through very quickly. A solid bar or replaceable wear sections would be better. Mine is now hardfaced for durability.

I spent most of a day behind this 16.5 horse machine. You will have to hang on because it does not hesitate. Unfortunately I struck a steel pipe hidden in the grass and feared the blade was destroyed. To my surprise it had just a small nick on it and was ready for more! I cut through heavy dried Johnson Grass with ease. The engine never seemed to strain under the stress. The machine was ready for more but I had to take a rest. I was somewhat skeptical about how it would preform but after that day I feel my money was well spent.

I had a 40 year old Kee Mower and thought I would upgrade to this DR 30 but am disappointed in the DR as it accumulates trash around the deck when going forward or backwards and the wheels start spinning and you have to push down hard on the handles and go forwards or backwards to try and get it to moving as I have had it stuck a couple of times its also big and heavy and bulky you cannot trim with it if you get close to a chain link fence it will rake you knuckles and around trees it will hit you hands on the tree, I have 7000 trees on this property and 1000 feet of chain link fence, also I am 76 years old and have severe Osteo Arthritis and was hoping this machine would really help me but am going to have to get my old 40 years old machine out to do part of the work. also when using the so called power steering hang on as it will swing around very fast if doing a 180 I have a lot of real heavy elephant grass and now wish I had gotten the 20 horse engine but now don't even know if I would have bought this machine. I had hauled in 20.000 lbs of elephant manure years again and got this exotic grass and it is taking over the neighborhood and it is tough to get a mower through it also if there is any pressure on the transmission when trying to shift it will not shift you really have to press hard on the shift lever and Im afraid it will break.

PRO XL-30 review
Posted by: DON M. from CASA, AR on 10/25/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
Positive: This machine is a real workhorse. I used it to clear an area that I hadn't touched in several years and it handled everything flawlessly. I also love the reverse gear (which my original F&B mower didn't have). Negative: The so-called Power Steering (which is really just differential braking) leaves something to be desired. It is difficult to control the rate-of-steer when you apply either of the brakes. Unless you reduce the power significantly before commencing a turn, you will have to RUN to keep up with the mower (especially when doing a 180). I thought this would be a really desirable feature, but I'm not that impressed with it.

Great machine great price. The only thing I have issues with is my very steep slopes. This particular model is equipped with power steering and when I go up rugged hills it will activate power steering. One wheel will lock and the other will spin. I plan on returning and getting the smaller model which doesn't have power steering

Great power, great braking/turning, the transaxle upgrade is much better than the old chain drive, the wider cut is nice too, and I like the PTO button better than the old lever arrangement. On the negative side....the lack of a fuel gauge like my older one has is a pain. And, while the oil drain hose is nice for ease of maintenance, it catches and comes loose sometimes when working in brushy tangles.

We have 2.5 Acres of woods that has become completely overgrown with Buckthorn. We used to be able to walk anywhere on our property but not anymore. We have been fighting it for years. Manually trying to cut it back with loppers (forget it), Using a gas powered trimmer with a saw blade, broke the drive shaft. Finally broke down and bought the PRO XL-30. All I can say is WOW! In 45 minutes I was able to knock back more Buckthorn that we've ever done with other methods. It is definitely a workout but so worth it. We'll have our grandkids running in the woods before we know it!

I own one of the original Dr Brush cutters, still use it today. Ok my wife who is not into modern equipment tech is still using it. Let's see no reverse, one speed, pull to start, physical steering. It is still a great machine. This one however easy out of the crate, electric start and I have ran it daily, even if only to mow to the mail box. Great machine, now get me a chipper that will chip bamboo.

Everything I expected and more.

In 2007, I bought a DR brush mower. Loved it. Well, it finally gave out after 10 years of consistent use (for lack of better explanation, the axel casing broke and gearing fell out - I did not seek to have to repaired and felt it was time for a new one). I went with a bigger model (engine and cutting deck). It HAS BEEN GREAT! One issue ( user error). I was mowing under some trees on our property and got tangled up in a hanging vine. A few seconds later the motor cut off. Admittedly , I became a bit frustrated as I could not get it started. I left it sit over night and had an epiphany: the gas shut off valve. I checked the next morning and sure enough, the shut off valve had gotten moved to the 'off' position when I was tied up in the vine. Since then, it has been smooth sailing! The upgrades over the model I had from 2007 are considerable! Most notably the deck design is better: my old model had a small - rebar-like skid on the discharge side. That had broken off about two years ago but I kept using it (just didn't mow level). The NEW deck is much more substantial. Definitely lives up to the expectation I had! (And probably MOST importantly, my wife is happy with how the property is looking!).

Amazing how much work this machine will do! Recently cleared over 7,500 sq. ft. of blackberry vines which had grown to 6 ft. in height. The PRO XL-30 is a well-built piece of equipment that will make life easier for and increase the productivity of its owner. Consider it as an investment in your property (and yourself) and buy one. You will not regret it.

PRO XL-30 is an excellent machine!

I recently purchased this unit to clear and maintain our wooded lot in SC. The terrain is difficult and there were several areas of kudzu and other invasive and nuisance vines on the property, as well as a high density of hardwood saplings. This machine turned this overgrown property into a gem in about 8 hours! There is a little bit of an operating learning curve with the power steering, but I now can't imagine operating one of these without the power steering. The unit has already paid for itself about 1.5-3 times over. Quotes I got from local contractors to clear the property ranged from $5.5-11K . Holy smokes! Outstanding product!

Perfect for my use
Posted by: JOHN S. from Keene, NH on 06/29/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I have now walked behind this brush mower in my orchard for 12 hours (over several months) and I am absolutely pleased I purchased it. Pros: I'm 64 years old and do not want to have to fight with any equipment I own while working on my hobby farm. This Pro XL-30 seems to be made for me and my chores. It is extremely well built, assembled quickly, the electric start is excellent, the mower turns and stops on a dime, it leaves a very nice finish cut and I very rarely find myself having to muscle it as I mow my orchard (both flat and hillside). Cons: Nothing is perfect...My orchard is protected by an electric fence using tape. There are several areas on the top of the mower where the tape gets caught when I mow near the fence. It's an inconvenience, not a problem. Slightly more annoying is the lack of a solid stop when shifting gears, especially between 2nd and 3rd. Occasionally, I think I have moved to 2nd when it's actually third and get surprised. Again, minor compared to the excellent performance this brush mower provides. I would grade my experience with this as a 93 so I'm giving it 5 stars.

The DR is a perfect accessory for my property? In South Ga we have kudzu and vines that give this mower problems. The vines wrap around axels and drives and have to be cut. Flat land and slopes can be managed but rougher terrain is best suited for bush hogs and heavy tractors. Today was my first use and I am extremely pleased and know when I need heavier equipment. very pleased!

So far so good. The mower performs as promised. I was very pleased with how well it cuts through high grass and weeds. Cutting down small trees and bushes takes a little skill but I should have that down with a few more sessions. I was a little disappointed in the "Getting started" process, As the manual mentions there are a few wires unplugged from shipping. I am not quite sure what I did to finally get it turn over. Might I suggest a Getting Started sheet that points out some of the obvious and not so obvious? Also what is the other plug at the front of the engine by the oil fill and drain area? Could find it anywhere. Cant wait to get a chipper.

Great improvement over a DR it replaced that I bought in 2001. The only improvement is how you mount the battery, one strap to hold it and the battery wires are exposed, is there any type of cover and better mounting racket available? It also is very small compared tom the battery on my older DR.

This mower with blade is a addition to the power wagon, 2 versi trailers we own, and once again this product performed awesome! We use it on our lake property where I cannot get my tractor, one feature that is worth the extra money is the power steering, when you are on a hill it really makes it easy when mowing. I purchased the blade for times I need to move small amounts of dirt in tight places, it is very surprising how well it works and what it will push. I recommend this to anybody especially the models with power steering!

No Better Choice

First, full disclosure...I was an employee at DR Power for 17 great years. During that time, I lived in a small development and never had the opportunity to buy a DR Brush Mower, but used one frequently during training sessions and always wanted one. Now, after moving to a new job, I live on 35 hilly acres of mixed fields, woods, and old farm roads. Some of the fields have been abandoned for some time and are a real mess of raspberries, wild roses, vines that I've never seen before but net over everything, and other nasty stuff with big thorns, some of it over six feet high. Parts of some fields are wet, and even if dry you'd never be able to drive a tractor or 4-wheeler through some of the really dense stuff. For that, I bought this DR. Fortunately, the DR has the business end in the front and just chops it all up. It's work, don't get me wrong, when attacking some of the really dense and tall stuff - the thick, 6-foot thorn canes that are so dense a rabbit couldn't get through. But the DR chomps it all up. Tall grass, ferns, and golden rod, I can mow trough one-handed. I'm more impressed with the DR's power and durability than I was during training. I've really beaten the DR up, hit rocks I couldn't see, tangled it up in vines, hung it up on logs, mowed trough muddy patches, but it keeps going and I couldn't be happier. You couldn't make a better purchase. Victor

I had an old (pre-2000?) DR Field brush mower (pull start, 1 speed forward-fast, no reverse). It was very challenging to work. Back in the day I could, but not now-I am 66. We took advantage of the sale with the lower price & free shipping. Delivery was slick and not a hassle: mower came in a wood crate & was picked up at truck depot. Got it home, added gas & oil & fired it up. I was off to cut the brush. And a superb job it did. The 3 speeds forward and the reverse made the work almost pleasurable. The powerful motor rarely struggled, even when cutting the 2+ inch brush. It seemed to thrive on chewing up the brush. The power steering may not have been necessary, but I can foresee the value of it in tighter situations. The lugs on the tire give it great traction. And the electric start made getting to the work so much easier than the old recoil start. DR Field gave me excellent customer service, too. When changing the standard blade to their HD brush blade, I broke a part, called them, and they sent me a new part. I am very pleased with this purchase, the customer service, and the machine. It makes the necessary work doable.

Overall an excellent unit. In light brush such as tall grass or very small saplings the unit performs very well. DR claims this unit will tackle trees up to 2 inches. I did not have that experience. After two uses, I need to order a new blade. After the first usage, I needed to order a new front vinyl flap for the business end. All in all the best unit available for the price.

Evaluation of 16.5 HP Brush Mower
Posted by: Russell C. from Macwahoc PLT, ME on 02/23/2016
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
My need was to reclaim as best possible approximately 8 acres of field formerly cut using a sickle bar or flail type mower. The area was overgrown with dense, thin diameter brush some reedy and some woody. This machine handled the bulk of work required although some brush was heavy or thick enough to lift the nose requiring a reverse and restart. The supple, very thick grasses encountered thereafter could choke the blade requiring reverse and restart. I estimate that I accrued 50-60 hours operating in this environment. I did brake one cable which was replaced under warranty immediately and expeditiously. When I had technical questions, they were answered quickly and accurately. So far, this is a very good buy, but consider carefully the power required for your job versus the weight of the machine. Multiple heads for expanded usability is a nice feature.

Another piece of equipment for the farm

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We have a medium size commercial family farm in middle Tennessee with multiple size tractors and bushhogs for the main fields and wanted something for smaller areas we didn't or couldn't get the larger equipment into in order to minimize disturbing the land. The DR has proved to be very helpful in keeping the corners & ends of the fields towards creeks/wet areas and selected narrow pathways in wooded areas cleaned up from scrub saplings and tall grasses. To be as massive as the DR is, it’s a well balanced, controllable beast that performs as advertised. The mower, as in all walk-behind powered equipment, needs to be operated by someone in good physical condition (I am 60 years old, 180 lb, muscled, & handsome, too), and a good technique is to let the equipment do the work as you perform the control. Shifting of the transmission to different forward speeds is not as smooth or accurate as I would like, but will see if it improves over time with more use. Feathering of the clutch is recommended to aid shifting, but would suggest DR investigate this as an area for product improvement.

Field and Brush Mower Durability
Posted by: Albert C. from FORT DAVIS, TX on 07/21/2014
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
To say that this Field and Brush Mower is durable is an understatement! I purchased the 17-horsepower version in August, 2009, to start clearing my property in the semi-aird desert of West Texas. The ground is extremely dry and dusty so the machine is operated in what I consider adverse conditions. There are stones and rocks all over. It is impossible not to collide with them. Blades get chewed up, but this machine keeps working! I did not write a review until now because I like to first put something through its paces over time. I have mown down brush, cacti, forbes, and sedges. I always maintain the machine at the end of the mowing season. I have had no serious or minors problems with this machine, not even a flat tire! It is extremely powerful and maneuverable. In January, 2011, I purchased the 42" lawn mower attachment. After getting my property mown down with the brush mower, I started using the lawn attachment. It is also extremely rugged, though I have to replace blades every year or two. It is used on much rougher and extremely bumpier ground than a regular lawn mower would be expected to operate. But, this deck does the job! I also purchased in August, 2013, the Snow Blade, not that I have any snow. But, it works very well on the sides of my driveway to make shallow ditches for drainage, not the intended purpose of this attachment. I find I can do an awful lot with this combination that might not have been the intended usages. Ruggedness and durability in equipment are what I demand, and DR comes through with top grades!!

Absolutely great for getting through high grass, between the trees on the tree farm and for clearing out neglected areas of overgrown blackberries and other brambles. the 16.5 HP is a bit big for me to handle because I am only 5' tall, but the overall performance is 5 star.

My new machine is a far cry from my 20 year old solid tire model; which by the way served me well. It took very little time to get accustomed to the new 16.5 horsepower brush and field mower. It took a lot of strength to maneuver my hilly acreage for which I am grateful because I need to build up my upper body and this will do it. The machine performs above and beyond my expectations. It is perfect for my situation clearing underbrush (Russian Olive)that are pervasive. I anticipate adding a snow blower attachment for the severe winters in Northern Michigan; I am convinced that the DR has plenty of power to handle any snow conditions.

Reclaiming land.

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We bought the DR in the fall to help reclaim our land which was overrun with briers and various vines. We've been using it a lot this spring. I tried lots of hand tools and bladed industrial trimmers, but the DR has really saved us a lot of time. It runs great and really has power. It's heavy and will wear you out turning it around. Great safety features. I've never been hit by debris. We were getting discouraged at what seemed to be an impossible task, but the DR has made us realize that being able to utilize all our property will be a reality. It's able to get places that a bulldozer or large tractor would not be able to go without cutting down trees.

This DR brush mower lives up to its description and more. On an abandoned farm I easily mowed through 6-8 foot weeds and brush, and ran through autumn olive trees that were up to 2.5 inches thick with no issues (I did have the heavy duty brush blade attached). I operated for hours at a time with relative ease and no equipment problems. In the lower drainage areas (muddy with no standing water), I was able to use the traction control which resulted in not getting stuck and without tearing up the ground. This allowed me to operate in areas I had previously not expected. The machine arrived packaged securely and was up and running in very little time. Overall, I am very impressed and recommend this machine.

Bought my 17 hp DR in fall of 2004, also purchased the snowblower attachment. The only serious maintenance it has needed was due to mice eating all the wiring over the winter! Love this machine, want to buy the lawn mower deck as my rough and hilly property has routinely killed off every lawn & garden tractor I have purchased, including a 20hp Cub Cadet. About 10 acres, most of it heavily overgrown so it gets a workout! and snow in Michigan gives the snowblower plenty to work with in the winter. A great performer.

This brush cutter does everything I needed. I have put it to a number of uses. It has effectively cut thick underbrush on my small farm that has been uncut for years. I have also used it to clear and maintain trails through my woods. It has performed without issue. As I expected, from reading reviews before my purchase, the cutter can require a good amount of physical effort to control, particularly when operating in tight spaces that requires manuevering that is not a straight line. The average person can handle it, but it can be tiring. All said, I am very pleased with the machine; it has allowed me to complete jobs in hours, that had previously taken me days to do.

Based on ownership of a similar 17hp x 30" machine I purchased 5 years ago, you can't beat this mower. Rugged, well-built - it will cut through anything up to 2.5" with ease. After several hundred hours of use it has only required regular maintenance (oil changes and sharpening) and a replacement fuel pump, which was inexpensive and simple to do. Other than that it starts easily every time, runs strong, and is eager to go to work. This machine appears to be a life long investment, but should it ever fail I would buy another in a heartbeat.

It's a monster machine!
Posted by: Kenny101 from Missouri on 04/15/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We have problems with honeysuckle overgrowth. If this machine can run over it, it will cut it. Some of our plants are 4" at the base and it makes short work of it! Large woody vines and ground debris are no match and this thing can cut a path through areas you couldn't even walk in. One man cutting can entertain several men dragging brush out of the way. It doesn't devour the brush the way a lawn mower would. It just cuts it off down low and moves on and over it. We work on hills and valleys and this machine is a work horse. I get tired before it does and it will run all day, 10 hours, on one tank of fuel. Only problem so far is that it has so much torque that if you snag a tire on a tree or stump, you had better have a good grip. It's tougher than most people and won't stop until you let go.

Love the brush mower, it plows through most anything I can run it through. I also purchased the snow thrower head for it. That I am not happy with. It is VERY front heavy and difficult to maneuver. The engine is also hard to start in very cold weather (single digits and below zero). The brush mower is GREAT, the snow blower, not so much (would not purchase the blower again).

I have 2.5 acres of out-of-control Cogan grass, woody Caesar Weed, Ficus, potato vine and kudzu etc. The Cogan grass is eye level in places (I'm 6' tall) and so dense that it's tough to walk through. My old Gravely walk-behind, tough as it is, was over-matched. The constant backing up to unclog the blade or unwrapping the plant material from the blade spindle was wearing both of us out. I got 10% of cut that way before the thing really started overheating and burning oil. Would let it cool, add oil then whack away for another hour. But, I knew i was losing ground because the foliage was returning faster than i could manage it. I got busy this past year and it quickly got out of control. Then, I received a code enforcement letter threatening $500 daily fines if the lot wasn't mowed within 30 days. We actually discussed calling the mortgage-holder and surrendering the property. I was ready to give up. Then, I decided to buy the 16.5 HP DR Brush Mower, despite doubts that it would be able to handle the job. After all, my trusty Gravely was being killed off by this property! I have never submitted a product review in my 52 years but my new DR motivated me to do just that. Talk about the right tool for the job! Whatever you point the thing at, it will pull itself and you right through it. The Briggs motor is quiet and clearly has plenty of power to spare. I debated getting the larger 2 cyl model, but realize now what ridiculous over-kill that would have been. I can easily cut more in an hour with the DR than I could in 4 or 5 with the Gravely. Plus, no clogging and no unwrapping the blade! You can't know what a chore that was - in fact - the DR design with discharge chute and blade shroud were the actual clinchers for my buying decision. They really do work as described. My only concern is for the exposed wiring which could be damaged when going through dense foliage and bushes. But the build quality and materials are first rate. I would enthusiastically recommend this product to a friend or family member. We couldn't keep our property without it. It has actually turned our despair into joy. Thank you for producing such a great machine and for your complete lack of hype and overselling. The DR cutter has exceeded my hopes and expectations.

We purchased our 17 HP Kawasaki Commercial DR Field and Brush Mower when we decided that we wanted to build a house on the once clear pasture that had over time become a wooded lot with hundreds of saplings up to 2" in diameter. We could barely fight our way through and wondered what we could do until we watched the video of the DR Mower in action. Since the price seemed reasonable for what we needed it to do we purchased and were amazed at the results. We simply walked behind the DR Mower as it ate its' way through every obstacle, and in about 4 hours we had made several open areas where 6' trees and saplings had stood. We've used the mower several times now and never had a problem. It starts right up and performs wonderfully every time. We would recommend this mower to anyone that has a difficult yard to tackle.

SO I have owned my Brush and Field mower -16.5 ,elect start..... actually the biggest one you had at that time, and all I can say is it's a beast . I have often thought I should take a video of myself using it and send it to you. I have broken a few things - the blade, the pulley wheel ( now I know why you send an extra one ) and broke a couple of welds but I am surprised that is all I have broke. I run over 1" to 2" pine trees with ease - If I need to cut soething like a hardwood that size and the DR is not heavy enough to lay it over and instead tries to climb up it, ( you know what i mean :-) ) I let it climb and then lift the handles to try and lay the tree over, usually the blade will catch and chop the tree down one loud violent wack at a time. I lmao. My friends have borrowed it ( brought it back with broken welds) and always laugh as the tell me about using it. I do wish though that it had come with an extra blade ( the beefy one ) and some attachments to say hold a chain saw, water bottle and maybe loppers or something similar, But all in all worth every penny of the price.....thank you

I cleared a lot of brush along 500 feet of river bank with a steep incline. The DR Brush Mower walked through the brush and small saplings with ease. It was a lot easier to mow down the hill than up, until I learned to mow backwards when going up the hill to avoid the mower rearing up as I mowed up the hill. Overall the machine was powerful and seemed to ease through the brush without even straining. I am completely satisfied with my Brush Mower. I also added a chipper attachment, which I have used extensively to my satisfaction also.

It works well on hilly terrain with small sapplings and equally well in wet swampy areas. As long as it has frim enough ground to support it this mower can do the job. I would hate to think of running the farm with one. It is an essential part of our farm equipment.

This is our third DR field and brush mower, having upgraded to our newest one last year. Our original one was a pull start, and if I remember correctly, didn't even have a reverse. We own 15 acres and it was primarily used to clear and maintain the property. My mother, who was 70 at the time, was the primary user. Since she had trouble starting it,and sometimes getting stuck and not being able to back it out, we upgraded a few years later. She loved it because it was electric start and had a reverse to help her back up. After almost 10 years we got the newest model and about the only thing we don't like is that it is heavier and with the swivel deck it's hard to turn. She is now 87 and still running it, but tells me that she much prefered the older model. I've also used it and find it difficult to turn, but for a man it might be easier.

Response from DR SupportThanks for the suggestion. We actually did have a Limited Slip Differential on the previous AT2 model from 2001-2005. We went back to a Lockin/Lockout on the current AT3 model. Our customers wanted the locking capability for mowing on slopes or extra traction for the slippery stuff.

Since my 15.0 DR FIELD AND BRUSH MOWER was purchased in October of 2000, I didn't know where to put my review. This mower is still going strong and has been used numerous times every year. It's a wonder horse. My neighbor doesn't like to help keep the fence line mowed and I cannot mow my ditch with my rider mower, so I "get to" mow small hedge trees and tough weeds, among other things with my DR MOWER. I love this machine and would recommend the DR to anybody who has any kind of brush or small trees to clear out. I'll be 70 years old on May 4 and I truly believe this machine is going to out live me! I've had to replace the belt a couple of times but I've also had to replace my shoes a few times in the last 12 years. (I think the 8.75 PRO-XL DR TRIMMER/MOWER would be a wonderful birthday gift!) Thank you for such a great durable mower. I don't know what I would do without it; What a wonderful product!

You would not believe where I have used this mower

I have used this mower for over 10 years and it has performed far beyond my expectations and your advetising. I have mowed thru weeds and grass over 6 feet tall with brush thrown in as a true test. I have mowed hill sides to steep to walk on safely. This is truly a "mean mowing machine"

I love my F & B mower. I have been able to do much more with it than I ever expected. It was worth every dollar I spent on the purchase. I don't own a riding mower, or small tractor. So this is my mower/brush clearer of choice. I have been able to clear my property and maintain it with little effort. The info you provide on what it will cut is very accurate. I have been able to duplicate the specs and then some. This my baby!

Good product, but sometimes the cut is not even or complete

When brush cutting fields, sometimes the brush is pushed down and not cut. This occurs with new blades as well as sharpened blades so I don't think it is the sharpness. It sometimes also gets grass wrapped around the center area of the blade and slows down performance. It does a fairly good job, just wish the cut was larger as well.

Having just had a heart pace-maker installed, and watching the 4-6 ft grass and saplings growing out of control in the fields and orchards had me wondering how on earth I was going to get it down. I knew I would need something big to handle the job. Ran across DR on-line and knew instinctively what my choice would be, hands down!!! I wasn't disappointed. The DR was balanced, properly geared, and easy to control, with plenty of power to spare. I couldn't have managed without it. Got in a second punch with the 42" mower attachment to keep it all cut down after the initial take-down. For me, DR was a God-send I would gladly recommend any day.

I have owned and used my brush mower for over 10 years. When I bought this product I used it to clean under brush, now I use it to keep my property maintained. Very durable, starts every time I use it.

Purchased a DR brush mower to clear trails and keep open a view through the woods from our cabin to a couple of beaver ponds. Also have used it for brush clearing a horse pasture at a Christian boys camp. All who see it are amazed by its power and performance.

This machine is an outstanding by itself in the field. We use this machine at our mountain cabin property. It clears trails for the deer and moose to come in on, and also for our grandchildren to run around without getting tangled in the growth that is as tall as they are. This machine does exactly what we wanted it to do. Our friends who have used it in the mountains return it and say, "WOW, what a machine!" We are very happy and satisfied. We would really like to get the snow thrower and the 42" blade, but can't afford to right now.

Q.What is the actual footprint of the brush cutter? I am looking to see if I may be able to haul it on a trailer hitch type carrier on the back of my van. Currently the largest stock carriers seem to be 30 inches by 60 inches. I have to transport it 3 hours and this would make it easier to get to the acreage I am clearing.
A.The overall unboxed dimensions/weight of the 16.5 HP Self-Propelled Field and Brush Mower are:

A – 41 ½” Over all Height

B – 78” Overall Length

C – 33” Overall Width (30” Overall Wheel Width)

D – 30” Ground to top of Engine

356 lbs.

The 16.5 HP is capable of operating for hours on end and with the pressurized oil system it is well suited for mowing on up to 20 degree slopes.

Q.What is the lowest this can mow?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR 16.5 HP Pro Field and Brush Mower.

The DR Walk Behind Field and Brush Mowers have a fixed cutting height of 3.5 inches. This helps when mowing on rough terrain. The DR's brush deck pivots from side to side, following the contours of the ground. This minimizes scalping and improves traction on uneven terrain by keeping the weight of the machine on its drive wheels.

Please contact us if you have further questions.

Q.Does it come with additional blades? A heavy duty brush blade that can be interchanged with the "regular" blade? I am looking to clear a lot of tall weeds, blackberry bushes, vine, ivy, cattails, etc. Before I make the purchase, I want to know that it will do the job and do it well. Thanks
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR 16.5 Pro Field and Brush Mower.

The Field and Brush Mowers come with the standard Field and Brush blade capable of taking down 6' tall grass, 8' tall weeds and brush and up to 2.5" thick saplings. We do offer a Heavy Duty Brush Blade that has cutting edges on both sides and is designed to take large areas of tall, heavy, thick grass, weeds and saplings. Here is the web page;

Q.I was wondering if any of the attachments can be swapped out on the main purchase. If I bought the 16.5 hp model, would it be possible to get it with the 42 in deck instead of the brush deck? I was hoping to get one with that deck and the snow blower attachment.
