Overview

Trim While You Mow!

The DR 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower makes it easy to mow your lawn while trimming weeds and tall grasses from lawn edges, fence lines, and up close to walls. The trimmer attaches easily to your riding lawn mower and can run simultaneously, saving you from taking two trips around your property to mow and then trim.

The lawn care routine for large properties often consists of two steps: first mowing the lawn with a riding mower, and then going back again -- usually on foot -- to trim the edges and corners with a handheld trimmer. For those with particularly large lawns, long fence lines, and extensive roadsides to maintain, the DR Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower is an unparalleled time- and energy-saver.

The DR Tow-Behind Trimmer features spring-loaded tensioning, allowing the trimmer head to easily deflect around obstacles, trimming right up close to trees, rocks, fence posts, and walls. Depending on the mowing conditions, you can tow the trimmer in-line behind your riding mower, or choose one of the two other offset angles, allowing you to reach up to 51 inches outside your mower's centerline.

At just 85 lbs., the DR Tow-Behind Trimmer is easy to transport and store. With its simple pin hitch, it tows behind any riding lawn mower, including zero-turns, to trim anywhere that's accessible to your mower.

Motor hard to restart. Caster doesn't follow well. Needs stronger spring. Over all it would be a 5 if I had a manicured lawn. I was told it would be okay on pasture.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR Tow Behind Trimmer. We are going to give you a call to help resolve these issues. Your satisfaction is important to us. Thank you for your business.

works great ! I use it on a flat dirt road that is mostly level. The trimmer cut all kinds or weeds and bramble with the blue string, no problem. Had to make 2 passes to get it cut back 3 ft.as expected. I also bought the quick change ball for string change on the road. Thanks

DR trimmer Tow- Behind Performance
Posted by: JAIME A. from GATESVILLE, TX on 09/15/2014

I was hoping this trimmer would be a little more steady & with a closer cut. This is not the case. It requires the lower head trimmer setting & very slow speed towing it to trim grass edges in an even manner. Not as good as the DR push trimmer which I have enjoyed for the last 15 years plus.

will not cut close to the brick wall, and when I go over a terraced area cuts the grass out then I have mud... I am not a happy camper
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry you are having these issues with the Yard Trimmer, but thanks for posting a review. With a 22” cutting swath dealing with terraces or dips is going to require careful trimming/planning. Shorter cutting cords may be needed to accomplish this successfully.

We will contact you about this & hopefully find a solution for you.

700.00 wasted. I wish i could return this unit!! It does not work well around fence post. My tractor does a better job. I still have to use the old trimmer every time. Don't waste your money!!!
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review about the YT1 Trimmer. We're sorry it isn't cutting well around your fence posts. We're not sure how much it's leaving, but maybe the cord can be cut a half inch longer? Just be careful not to cut it so long that it contacts the wheel. Make sure the "Optimal Impact Zone" is where the posts are contacting the trimmer also.

We will get in touch with you to discuss this.

tow behind not the best

My expectations not met. Perhaps SC grass is tougher than elsewhere, but the grass still standing after 2 passes is excessive. Have not studied it but providing cutters or blade alternative to plasic stringsshould not be too difficult.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the Yard Trimmer (YT1) hasn’t met your expectations. We appreciate you leaving a review though! We don’t think that South Carolina grass is too tough for the trimmer. In addition to here in Vermont, we tested this model in Louisiana! Maybe switching the cord size/style will help? Another possibility is the speed was a little fast? 3 MPH is the max for this model.

We are always open to suggestions & love to get them from our customers.

We will got a hold of you to discuss this.

Learning Curve of positioning

I think it would be a bit better if it was closer forward to get the impact bar to work for me. It is very powerful. It doesn't take much of a hole or dip to tip it over or scalp the ground with the tiny plastic wheel in the front. I have had a DR Trimmer for years! That is a "Get R Done" machine.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting about your Yard Trimmer (YT1). We’re not sure why having the Optimal Impact Zone more forward would work better for you, but we will get a hold of you to find out! You do have to be careful when encountering holes/dips to avoid scalping.

We like to get suggestions & hear how they are working out for our customers. “Get R Done Right” is our goal!

I thought this was going to be the cats meow but I was very disappointed. So disappointed that I'm going to send it back. I thought that it would be like my hand held trimmer but just faster. It is faster but doesn't do a good job cutting the grass.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the YT1 model trimmer didn’t meet your needs. Perhaps the larger AF1(7.25 All Terrain) model would work better for your rougher terrain?

We will contact you to discuss it.

We hope that this instance hasn’t turned you away from considering us in the future. We welcome the opportunity to earn your trust again.

I haven't turned the engine on yet. Tested how it tracked, the plastic wheel is already showing wear. It bounces pretty bad even at very slow speeds. The bolts with flange nuts shake apart. I'll try to double nut or lock-tight to fix the problem. All my areas to use this machine were already done with a standard weed eater, so I am weighting until I get some more growth before I really give it the test.
Response from DR SupportHopefully you have had a chance to use it by now? Weighing as light as it does (85lbs), it can bounce around. Make sure you are going 3 m.p.h. or less while using the Yard Trimmer (YT1). As a general safety check, please make sure all nuts/bolts are tight before using it.

We will check in with you to see how you like it.

I've got a 60" deck mower. The tow-behind wouldn't cut along the creek bank like I was told it would. I thought the wheel would fall off as it slid sideways. I'm sending it back!!!
Response from DR SupportWe are sorry to hear that the YT1 (Yard Trimmer) didn’t work out for you. It sounds like you need the next model up, the AF1 (7.25 All Terrain). It would work a lot better along your creek bank. The YT1 is best suited for a more level, smoother terrain.

We’ll contact you to follow up on this. Thank you for leaving a review about the YT1!

The unit itself seems to be well built. There is a bit of a learning curve when using it. After a few times it gets easier. The only issue I had was a defective part that did not allow me to assemble it. Customer service was very helpful. The part was not in stock and it took almost 2 weeks to get it. If it were not for a friend and his drill press I would not of been able to use it for 2 weeks. That really was not acceptable. Other than that the unit itself seems to do the job. I would of given it 4 or 5 stars if it was not for the part.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review about the YT1 Trimmer. We apologize for the issue you had with the Hitch Plate. That was an unusual situation! Hopefully it has been working fine since.

We will follow up with you to see how it’s going.

Product Q&A
Ask a Question for This Product
Sort By:
Q.What kinds of weeds can it cut (i.e. how thick, how tall, etc.)?
A.Almost all of them! Like our walk-behind trimmer/mowers, the 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer/Mower can cut anything green and flexible, regardless of its height. Goldenrod, thistles, ragweed, vines, tall fescues, purple loosestrife, and much, much more. Everything except woody, stalky materials, such as small saplings. However, because it is towed – and you can’t perform the back-and-forth action that you might with one of our walk-behind models – you may need to take more than one pass to clear out all the growth in some areas.

Q.Can I use this in rougher off-lawn areas?
A.The 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer/Mower is designed primariiy for surfaces maintained as lawns. We made it fairly light (85 lbs.) to be lawn-friendly. Other even surfaces, like driveways, are OK (for mowing shoulders or trimming up against buildings), but, like your riding mower, it is not intended for rough terrain.

Q.Can you adjust the cutting length to be a little short such that the trimmer won't damage fence posts or trees, if you get too close to them?
A.The new 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower offers a 22" cutting width and five different heights to choose from: 2.7", 3.2", 3.7" 4.2", 4.7". Use 2 cords at a time when trimming, no rolls of cord to wind.

The Tow-Behind Trimmer has a spring loaded arm so you can change the tension for your trimming needs allowing you to go around fence posts, trees, etc. There is also a built-in trimmer guard that protects objects that you do not want to damage, such as trees, flowers, posts, etc.

This new trimmer is great for mowing tall grass and weeds anywhere you can safely take your riding lawn mower. Thanks for your interest and question. ph

Q.My lawn has some hilly or sloped areas. Can I use this on hills and slopes that are maintained as a lawn?
A.Yes. Because of its light weight (85 lbs.), the 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer/Mower is not designed for rough, off-lawn areas, but hills and slopes that you mow and maintain as part of your lawn are OK as long as they are no steeper than 20°.

Q.I have a lot of chain link fence on my property. How close will this trim the grass to the fence?

Q.Can this be used with 5" square plastic rail fence?
A.We do not recommend using the Trimmers around plastic fencing. The cutting cord could most definitely cause damage to that particular type of material. As well as the frame of the body hitting and causing damage to the plastic as you trim. The Trimmer is best suited for wood or metal posts/fencing.

Depending on your mowing conditions, you can either tow in-line behind your riding mower or choose one of the three other offset angles, 29", 40.5" and 51" outside your mower's centerline.

Q.I am looking for something that I can pull behind an atv to trim grass under wire and around posts and plants in a one acre vineyard. Will this unit accomplish this without damaging grape trunks, and what is the hight of the bar that would have to slip under the lowest wire on the grape trellis?
A.The 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower has a pin-hitch to attach to any riding mower. This model Trimmer Mower is not intended for rough terrain, as we offer the 7.25 All-Terrain Trimmer Mower for more rugged, off-lawn areas.

The cutting width on the 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower is 22" and the cutting cord extends approximately 1/2" out from the bar. The trimmer head has 5 line plates offering 5 different cutting heights: 2.7", 3.2", 3.7", 4.2", 4.7".

The Trimmer/Mower features spring-loaded tensioning, allowing the trimmer head to easily deflect around obstacles, trimming right up close to objects. It features a trim safe guard to protect trees and other obstacles from damage by the trimmer.

Depending on your mowing conditions, you can tow the trimmer in-line behind your riding mower, or choose one of the three other offset angles, 29", 40.5" and 51" outside your mower's centerline. This Trimmer/Mower can cut anything green and flexible regardless of height!

Q.Can I use without hitching it? say in areas. Where my tractor can't go...
A.Our Tow-Behind Trimmers are meant for use with their appropriated machines only. This one being the lawn tractor. We do not advise using the Trimmer in any other fashion. Doing so could void any warranty on the machine. If you are needing to reach into an area too small for your tractor, I would suggest considering one of our walk-behind models. We offer a variety of walk-behind models to suit most everyone's trimming needs.

Q.DR 6.25 tow behind, how long will 1 quart of gas last while mowing? I have a Category 0 Honda 18HP tractor with a ball hitch, can the pin hitch work? Do I have to rig up an attachment? Thanks.
A.1 quart of gas in the tow-behind Trimmer/Mower will last approximately 40-50 minutes. Possibly a little longer. The mower features a pin hitch for attaching to a standard size lawn mower. If you have a large tractor, the hitch may not reach. This model is available for towing with a pin hitch only. We recommend using the hitch as intended. We thank you for your interest. fc

Q.It appears that this unit is desgned to cut on the left side of the towing lawn tractor. Can the unit be set up to cut on the right also?
A.Due to the discharge opening being on the right handed side of most mowers, this trimmer is for use on the left handed side only. Our 6.25 model has 3 offset reaches. 29", 40.5" and 51". This is a great way to get into those hard to reach areas.

Q.Why is the trimmer limited to a 20° slope? Is it an oiling issue?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

Yes, the 20 degree slope limitation is because of the oil lubrication of the engine. When operating it on a slope steeper than 20 degrees, it risks engine damage.

Q.Will this machine tow behind a Polaris Ranger ATV or does it need a different hitch because of height difference? Can it be offset from center like the 7.25 model?
A.The 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower is recommended to go wherever you would safely drive a lawn mower. For optimum results, rough terrain is not recommended, as this model mower only weighs 85 lbs. and could bounce around not giving you the best results. Trim speed should not be over 3 mph to prevent bouncing.

The 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower offsets to the left side only, as most lawn mowers are right side discharge. It comes with a pin hitch that can adjust to your lawn mower's hitch for easy hook-up.

With the tow vehicle you have, we suggest you consider the 7.25 All-Terrain Trimmer Mower that offsets to the right side and can attach to any vehicle with a pin or ball hitch.

Q.Can I use this product as a finish mower and tow behind my four wheeler?
A.The 6.25 Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower uses cutting cord for trimming and mowing. It cuts the grass just one time as opposed to the re-cutting action of a blade. The cutting cord will not leave a manicured, finished cut.

The Tow-Behind Trimmer Mower is designed for mowing and trimming along driveways, mowing shoulders and up against buildings. The Trimmer Mower offsets only to the left side and should only be used at slow speeds on level ground.

The 6.25 model is light weight and designed to be pulled behind a lawn mower. For optimum results, rough terrain is not recommended as it could bounce around not giving you the best results, so a four-wheeler is not recommended. ph

Q.How well would this product work as an offset tow behind mower for a 3 acre property? Mostly flat but with a wide variety of grass, weeds and small saplings.
A.Our Tow-Behind Trimmer/Mower is intended to be used on areas you would use your riding mower. It is best for cutting grass and weeds. Being that it uses cutting cord, saplings are not ideal. As for handling 3 acres, this machine wouldn't have any issues with that. It is a great addition to maintaining your property.
