Portable Powerhouse

Easy grip handles on the shredder chute and light weight (126 lbs.) make for easy maneuvering. But don’t let its size fool you—this is one tough machine that will devour 3” branches and shred yard and garden waste up to ½” in diameter.

Chipper shredder chips 3-inch branches and shreds 1/2-inch brush

Shredder reduces yard and garden waste 10:1!

The big shredder hopper accepts all your yard and garden waste—weeds, leaves, prunings, sticks, pine cones, and more—and reduces it all to a fraction of its original volume. The byproduct can be added to your compost or tilled into your garden in the fall.

Lightweight and Portable

Lightweight and Portable

Easy grip handles on the shredder chute and lightweight construction (126 lbs.) make for easy maneuvering—around your yard or in and out of storage. And its compact footprint lets you stow it anywhere, even where floor space is limited.

Compact Powerhouse

Compact Powerhouse

Don’t let its size fool you. This machine has serious power and will make short work of branches up to 3” in diameter, and armloads of yard and garden waste up to a half inch in diameter. It’s nimbleness makes it a great choice for working in heavily landscaped areas.

Free Swinging Hammers

8 Free Swinging Hammers

Shredding is accomplished by 8 free swinging “hammers” that mash and pulverize materials into a fine organic mulch that’s great for recycling into your landscape—either by tilling into your garden or feeding to your compost pile.

Bushel Debris Collection Bag

2.5 Bushel Debris Collection Bag

Included with your chipper, this durable bag with drawstring fits around the discharge chute and is great for use around flowerbeds, carefully maintained lawns, or any other place where you want to control the discharge and keep things tidy.

Engine

Briggs and Stratton OHV Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the only ones we use on our DR Chippers. The 9.5 FPT Chipper Shredder uses a durable 208cc Overhead Valve, easy-starting engine. It features a debris management system that protects the engine from whatever you kick up while you’re chipping and shredding.

Collector trailer on the tow-behind DR leaf vacuum

“Kickstand” provides Stability and Mobility

Designed for maneuvering around your yard easily, the “kickstand” makes it easy to transition between travel mode and work mode. Just lie it back on its wheels (like a mover’s dolly) to travel, then rest it on the kickstand when you’re done.

Pro-Spec™ Chipper Knife

Pro-Spec™ Chipper Knife

Made of high-carbon/high-chromium forged alloy tool steel, our knives hold an edge longer than those on "bargain" chippers.. Still, as with any cutting tool, keeping a sharp edge is important for maintaining peak performance. We recommend keeping an extra on hand so you can minimize downtime.

In this day and age where products tend to over-promise and under-deliver, this chipper is a proverbial breath of fresh air. I bought this to replace a second-hand chipper that I had been using for the past 4 years. If I had known the difference this chipper would make I would have purchased the DR years ago. It blew through branches that would have choked my old unit. It punches way above its weight for its price point. My wife was amazed that I made my way through a giant pile of brush and limbs in only a few hours. She asked what I am going to call the chipper. I told her I am going to name it “The Beast”.

Great chipper, small schredder.
Posted by: William H. from Stonington, CT on 06/13/2017

Feeding into the schredder must be very slow, the bottom of the chute is very small. It's interesting that the catalog shows users feeding small hand fills of material. Chipper works amazingly, rendering material into chips quickly and easily.

9.5 MANUAL START DR WOOD CHIPPER SHREDDER
Posted by: Wayne P. from Sahuarita, AZ on 06/08/2017

Had no problem with the assembly. Chipper shredder started on second pull. I was very pleased with the performance. I had to learn how to properly use it without clogging it to the point of shutdown. I had to completely disassemble it and clean out around the blades, hammers and flywheel. I learned two things, give it time to clear discharge chute before adding the next limb and if using the bag, empty it often. Here in the Arizona desert I have a lot of mesquite & palo verde to chip and shred. I believe I bought the right machine.

I've got to say alllllllright. Well it took me a little longer to put it together than it should have, due to motorcycle problems(I couldn't get a rainy day). When I got it together, which was easy, it fired on the second pull, which I thought was great. It's not going to chip trees, but does great up to 2 1/2" or so. I'm happy about getting my money's worth plus.

DR Wood Chipper Shredder Review

The product works terrific, just as advertised. I viewed several video's of chipper shredders on YouTube prior to purchasing the 9.5. This chipper shredder appeared to be built better and have better design features than other products of similar size and cost. So far I am very happy with this purchase.

Impressive power in a compact package

The chipper/shredder arrived today in two boxes. Setup is fairly straightforward-add oil to the engine, install the shredder chute, install the chipper chute, and then install the discharge shield and flaps for the other two chutes. The chipper chute can be a bit tricky to get lined up since one of the engine oil dipsticks is right next to it (there's another dipstick on the other side of the engine). Once I had everything put together I pulled the starter cord a few times to turn the engine over and then again checked the oil. Good to go. Added fuel, set the choke, set the throttle, and on the first pull it fired up. After letting it run a couple minutes I attached the bag, and started chipping branches. It handled everything I put in it, from larger apple limbs that were easily 3" to smaller stuff that went in the shredder. It looks like this will do everything I need it to do, and then some. I have a pretty big pile of branches that I plan to work on this weekend. I have no doubt that the DR will handle everything I put in it. So far I'm extremely happy with it, and the quality is excellent.

Used it to shred leaf piles and some chipping of tree branches. A lot of dust when shredding leaves recommend using dust mask to keep you from inhaling it. chipping was very easy and did not create dust. Overall would recommend this machine.

Good job at chipping ramial wood.
Posted by: Joseph C. from Dunlap, TN on 05/03/2017
Rating:
The assembly was sort of a pain due to the fact that the two washers required for the shredder chute were missing but a quick trip to Tractor Supply solved that issue. The oil fill locations are sort of a pain but using a long funnel works there. The machine started right up and chewed through some white oak limbs that were less than 3" in diameter. These limbs were a bit dried out so less than ideal but while it slowed down at times, it never choked. One point here, one has to lop off small branches that would impede the feeding as the input hole is of a limited size. Also, severe crooks in a limb will not feed. To me, this is not an impediment. The output is a very good size for my purposes. I think this is probably the best tool for the money.

Shredder
Posted by: Andrew B. from PEYTON, CO on 04/23/2017
Rating:
Fired up the machine..started easy and chipped everything great,,,yeah now the shredder operation...meh..weak honestly. clogs up very easily with old leaves left over from fall mixed with 1/8" and less diameter twigs. I had to keep using a 2x2 to keep feeding a large handful and by a large handful I mean take both hands and pick it up and shove it down the chute handful. It really works well with very small amounts inserted into shredder (dry). Not impressed with the shredder at this time. I will work with it with various loads and see how it goes...all in all it will do the work I need it to do,,,the only negative thing I have to say about this machine is the location of the oil dipstick location. REALLY?? yall know DR = done right,,right? well this ain't DR'd AT ALL!! Cant get the dipstick out without pulling off the chipper chute!!! Maintenance instructions say to check oil prior to every use...yeah I don't think Ima pull off the chipper chute prior to every start up...DR got this one wrong. Then again who checks their oil all the time? I will change oil once a year and continue to use this machine. all in all it will do what I need it to do..but that oil dip stick location annoys me.

GREAT SMALL CHIPPER, SHREDS VERY FINE
Posted by: Jim Kingsland from Wichita, KS on 03/21/2017
Rating:
I have owned this several months now and have used it both as a chipper and a shredder. The chipper works very well, although I would not attempt chipping anything over 1 1/2 inches in diameter. As far as the shredder is concerned, I totally agree with Steven R - the shredder churns everything into very fine (e.g. coffee grounds, fine sand, fine dirt) consistency. This makes the machine very slow, as it churns

Well Engineered Chippper.
Posted by: Al B. from Birmingham, AL on 03/16/2017
Rating:
Very impressed with how this chipper is engineered. Very good design. The chipper disc has a heavy chipper blade on one side and a hammer mill mounted to the other side. Green wood is pulled through the chipper easily. Larger dry wood can bounce in the infeed chute but will chip on its own. The hammer mill beats twigs and small clippings into a very fine material. Dry leaves are turned to dust. Engine starts easy but requires a strong pull of the start cord. The only down side to the design is the chipper in feed chute is over the primary oil fill plug. There is a second oil fill plug on the other side of the engine but it is so far underneath it is difficult to get a funnel to it. Fill your motor with oil before you install your chipper infeed chute as this side is easy to fill with a skinny funnel.

Good for moderate home use.
Posted by: Steven R. from Surry, VA on 12/18/2016

I have owned a DR Brus-hog for years and have always been happy with it. After much research, comparison and thought I decided to go with the DR product. I owned a Troy-built Tomahawk chipper 25 years ago and it has been a while since running run. This is not as big as my Troy-built but I am 66 years old and wanted something I could manage, mostly for shredding leaves. It arrived in two boxes, in two days from Vermont to Virginia as advertised. Forget the 30 minutes I read for putting it together. It took me most of the morning and make sure you read, and re-read the instructions several times. A video on the website for putting it together would have been helpful. If you put it together on the weekend be aware there is no one in customer service or support if you have questions, which I did. Two flat washers were missing from the parts bag. Fortunately they are common around most homes. Comments about filling the oil BEFORE putting the chipper chute on were heeded. I stopped and started it about three times and as long as your choke and run settings are correct it starts easily enough. I learned quickly that you CANNOT stuff this chipper! It took me a while to get the hang of putting leaves in the shredder at the top and let them self-feed down or the machine will clog. The shred dings from dry leaves and grass clipping were reduced to a very fine matter , almost dust! It was a breezy day and blew away as fast as it came out the discharge. I will need to wait for a cool windless day to shred leaves. I would not want to be feeding this hopper on a warm or hot day for long and when it is windy you are working a futile game. I have a large property with huge leaf piles from my lawn sweeper. It will take me hours to reduce them through the shredder, because as I stated, you can not rush or stuff the hopper. I did not use the chipper yet but anticipate it will do the job. I kind of wish I could have seen how it shredded first with an on line video or in store floor model. This size is fine for the moderate or small property owner.

DR Wood Chipper/Shredder, 9.5

Maybe I expect to much from this chipper / shredder, but I found that it will chock out very easy when using the shredder part, the engine seamed very weak, it was easy to bog down when chipping or shredding. Don't like the hand holes when moving, very awkward. I had a lot of 1/4 to 3/8 sized material that I shredded slowly, also it chipped 3 inch limbs o.k.

Good but not great
Posted by: Michael W. from Riggins, ID on 11/16/2016
Rating:
Chipper arrived in good order. You will need a long funnel to add the oil. Assembly was easy. Unit requires level and firm soil for stability - a tough requirement in Idaho! Specs state 3" maximum diameter for chipper however engine/flywheel undersized to handle branches that large - feed slow or it will stall. Shedder hopper is way too large for feed tube. Overload and it will clogged up. Discharge tube clogged when feeding large amount of green pine needles. All the shortcomings are learning curve issues. Once you get a handle on performance unit performs well. Unlike an Honda, B&S Engine bit hard to start with just a pull or two. Be careful you don't knock the plastic tab on the throttle off with the pull rope. First pull on my new machine and it was gone!

Oil a little hard to install need a funnel or hose. Handle holes are a little rough on hands when moving. Very powerful for small machine. Must be fed slowly or will bog down. chipped the 3 inch branches like paper. I am very happy with chipper/shredder.

Some troubles getting the order correct and some problems with shipping, but eventually everything arrived. I assembled it and it started on the first pull. Fill it with oil before you assemble the chipper chute. I bought a little flexible neck that fits right on an oil bottle from Advance Auto. Perfect for filling the engine with oil. The shredder completely pulverized the leaves and whatnot for my compost pile... dust galore... needed a respirator. Tried a few branches in the chipper and seemed to take care of them quickly. Jury is out on how long the blades and flails last.

I purchased this Chipper Shredder because I just moved into a home on 2 acres that is over grown with buckthorn trees. I started clearing the invasive trees and burning them but it was a losing battle. I could only cut 2 to 3 trees before the brush pile was huge. Since I started using the chipper, I am able to cut 5 or 6 trees a day and I'm only left with a nice pile of mulch. I would highly recommend this chipper shredder.

I cannot recommend this product
Posted by: Jerry O. from New London, MN on 07/21/2016
Rating:
Sad but true. This little chipper does everything you would expect it to do. The real problem is that the most basic maintenance, changing the oil, requires a special funnel, two people, one to hold the funnel and one to pour the oil. The only alternative is to unbolt and remove the feed chute for the chipper function and use the funnel. The oil check plug is only about eight inches above the ground and requires you to be on hands and knees to check the oil. The loading chute for the chipper actually interferes with unscrewing the plug. Operation flawless. Maintenance difficult at best. Terrible engineering.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review to our website. We appreciate all feedback and are always looking to make improvements to our machines. I'm glad to hear you're happy with the chipper/shredder itself! I have passed your concerns and feedback regarding the maintenance onto our product developers so we can look into this further. Thank you again for the feedback!

Great home chipper

I haven't written the review until now because I only recently used my DR Chipper. On receiving the chipper it too me about 1 and 1/2 hours to put together. On checking the oil level as recommended the filler sticks ( there are 2) there wasn't a full line just x's on the stick so I filled it to the upper limit of the x's. The fuel on/off lever is hard to read as to which way to turn on the fuel but once I saw it the chipper started with 1 pull. It eats up the brush easely , larger ( 2-3 inch) limbs require slower feeding but any thing smaller goes right thru. I'm at my 5 hour breakin period so will be changing the oil as recommended and look forward to that challenge. A great chipper I really enjoy using it , but as mentioned in other reviews the oil sticks are an issue. Love my chipper.

Good Machine

Arrived one day earlier than was told would be here. Put it together without any difficulty. Instructions are clear, and precise. Filled it with prescribed amount of oil, gasoline, set the choke, set to run, and pulled the cord. It started the first pull. It starts on the first pull every time. I have accumulated a whole bunch of branches from tree trimming around here since my old MTD died awhile back. I put this to work only for about an hour as I'm 70, and it's 103 degrees Fah out there today, so forgive me for not working more. It did a great job. Better than the old machine ever did, and it was a good machine. Had it for twenty years before it crashed. I had a Bolens for many years before the MTD, so I go back many years with chipper shredders, and this one so far is the best of three brands. I'll admit the oil dip stick mentioned by others is a negative, but I can live with it as this machine gets the job done.

The DR 9.5 has exceeded my expectations. It was easy to assemble and started on the first pull. It made quick work of four large brush piles on our property. We also trimmed about 20 trees on our property and now have new wood chips in all of our gardens. We have about 12 hours of run time on the engine and it still starts on the first pull every time. It has paid for itself already. One of the best investments we have made!!!

I purchased the wood chipper for use around my yard. The best thing I did. I am using the chipper when ever I do trimming, It starts with just one pull. and does a great job I use the chippings around my shrubs . The only fault is I had to modify the oil plug (round over the top to clear ) also I was short on Nuts & bolts. when I opened the package of fasteners I was shot. I purchased what I needed at my local hardware store. Other wise I am very satisfied with my purchase.

9.5 dr wood chipper
Posted by: jgo from SPICEWOOD, TX on 06/15/2016
Rating:
The chipper eats my mesquite and cedar branches and does it well. The chipper does seem to vibrate a lot when it is chipping, but I think that is normal. Does best on 2 inch branches and below. Over 2 it does the job well, but the self feeding action wants to suck the branch in and stall the engine so you have to feed it in gradually until you can just let it go. I tried out the shredder a few times and I am probably asking it to do too much since it has a tendancy to want to stall the engine. Wet pine needles are not the easiest things to shred. Since 95% of what I need to do is chip I am not concerned, and if I put in small branches one or two at a time it does shred them Packaging was so secure it was a little bit of a job to get it out without breaking the box, you need to tilt it sideways and walk it out. Assembly was easy enough, but make sure you have a long and short side allen wrench for the shredder hopper and you will need box wrenches to put the chipper chute on. You will need a funnel to put the oil in and checking the oil level is a little awkward. The engine really should have had the extended dipstick as standard, but no big deal. Draining the oil at the 5 hour mark was pretty easy. Starting any small gasoline engine is an arcane art, but once you figure out where to put the throttle and choke for your engine you are set. One or two smooth pulls and the engine is running. Takes a little effort but less than my chainsaw. A few minor observations; the markings for settings on the engine are a joke. You cannot see them and they convey no information to the average layman. Instructions for shutting down seem to be misleading regarding the throttle position since it calls for moving the throttle to the left to start/run and to the left to shut down. And the bright yellow dipstick makes it very difficult for these old eyes to see the oil level. A very important plus is customer service responded very quickly to a small issue I had with the unit sending a replacement part next business day. So, why a 5? It does the job I need done and has good customer service. support.

First let me say it does the job just fine, but . . .the handles on the chute could have been made more comfortable just by bending the metal removed over so the edge doesn't cut into your fingers. And why do so many of you garden machine manufacturers make the oil fill and check location so hard to get to? the oil pan on cars is down low too, but the entry point is at a decent height. Also I am hoping the blade when it needs sharpening is easier to remove than on the chipper I bought from you some years ago.

Being patient while feeding material is a key. I would like to have seen a better design in the way this unit is moved from location to location, not as easy as it should be. At first I was skeptical about purchasing a chipper/shredder this small. We have tons of trimmings from all the trees on our 3 acre homesite. I have neighbors that have purchased a larger 11.5 machine from another company that say their machine was hard to start and really didn't have enough power to get the job done. Well, they should have bought the DR 9.5! I worked this machine hard for 3 days right out of the box and I'm impressed. Also a shout out to the DR Support desk, great experience. If you're wanting to chip up a bunch of the heavy stuff (3" dia or larger) though you probably should look at a larger machine from DR, they get it done!

This is the 4th type of shredders I have had in the past 20 years. It by far is the best shredder that I have ever tried. I had sent the 3rd unit (different mfg) back because it did not perform as advertised (10:1 reduction). As far as this DR unit, I believe it does better than advertised. Also, it is considered a manual feed for the branches but it does a great job of pulling the branches in without feeding, speeds up the work.

When I went to pull the cord the first time, the resistance was so much that I didn't think I'd be able to pull it all the way back, but within the first few inches of the pull, the machine started - very impressive. Good buy, and one that I'll own for many years.

The product worked extremely well. Was surprised at the power it has. Shredded and chopped as advertised. You need to check the clearance at the end of the chipper feeder. I had to remove the chute and grind about an 1/8 of an inch off the end because it was binding and not allowing the pull cord to be used. The only other suggestion would be to make the bottom opening of the shredder bigger. I found it easy to plug up with a couple of handfuls of pine needles and small branches

Astounding
Posted by: Randal V. from Waco, TX on 05/07/2016

I ordered this chipper on a Friday. It was shipped on the next Monday and it made it to my house by Thursday. That, for me is very fast shipping. The chipper was well packed but the muffler shroud was slightly bent. I slightly unbent it and it looks fine. The shroud on my unit is a solid piece rather than the wire cage that is displayed in the manual. Assembly, including unboxing and reading the manual, took me about an hour. There were no issues with assembling but I was a bit confused about which side of the Shredder Hopper Guard went up. I decided the rubber "fingers" belonged on top. When I was filling the engine oil I noticed there are actually two dipsticks. One dipstick is beneath the Chipper Chute and one dipstick is, as stated in the manual, on the other side of the engine beneath the valve cover. Changing the oil is a breeze when using the correct dipstick but get an extension funnel or some tubing to make oil changes easier. I had some difficulty getting the engine to turn over. I probably flooded the engine and pulled the rope about 20 times without any signs of life. I finally turned off the choke, turned to throttle to its off position and turned off the fuel shutoff valve. Then I pulled the starter rope about four times then went back to the standard starting procedure. The engine turned over and I let the unit warm up for a few minutes. Since that initial problem, the engine turns over very easily with a single pull on the rope. I don't know where Dr Power gets the people in their marketing pictures and videos but they make this unit seem light. Folks, this thing weighs 125 pounds. To this old geezer, that ain't light! Let's call its weight substantial. Lugging it up and down slope on rugged ground is doable but takes some muscle. This thing chips like a champ. I have a lot of brush, hackberry limbs, overgrown Ligustrum privet, live oak branches and Arborvitae limbs to get rid of. This chipper eats it all even when I throttle the engine down. Be careful not to hold on too tight to those branches! The shredder is going to take some time for me to get used to. Limbs with branches seem to bunch up a bit and go down slowly. Keep a small 1/2 stick on hand to use as a plunger and go slow.

DR WOOD CHIPPER & Shredder review.
Posted by: BARRY N. from MONTROSE, CO on 05/07/2016
Rating:
A powerful unit. It really doesn't shred leaf mulch and/or dry leaves. It literally makes them into dust!!! I had probably 1.5 cubic yards of 9 month old leaves mixed with mulch from a mulch pile. It took about 2 solid hours of continuous running of the machine to run it all through, and everything was literally turned to dust. If I had more than 2-3 cubic feet of dust left on the ground that would be all. The chipper part works fine, but the shreddder appears to be way too efficient as far as the particle size is concerned.. I was impressed with the machine's ability to chug through the mulch and not plug up, but as the directions says, it takes experience to not overfeed it in order to keep the engine revs at full throttle, or almost.

Lemon? Several problems! Underpowered, bogs down and stalls, won't turn off, and the leg broke!
Posted by: John c. from CUSHING, ME on 05/03/2016
Rating:
I recently bought the 9.5 hp manual start chipper/shredder. I love DR power equipment, but have had a bad experience with this chipper. It is underpowered, it is supposed to chip a 3 inch branch but will not chip a 2.25” branch without bogging down and stalling. The throttle only moves halfway to full power, which I thought was the problem. I called them about this, and was told “it seems OK”. The shredder does not feed at all, perhaps due as well to the lack of power, so I stopped trying to use the shredder. It does not always shut off when you turn it off. I also asked about this, and was told to bend a metal part on the throttle to correct that. I did, but it is back to not always shutting off, it just goes to low idle when in the OFF position. One of the two bolts that hold the leg on sheared off while it was running, so it is now wobbly and not very stable. Lastly, I had trouble getting it started the last day I used it (day 3 total usage) and it seemed to have lost more power (I think, I had hearing protection on) and when I put a 1” branch in, it bogged down completely, stalled, and is jammed with that branch so I can’t restart it. I may have gotten a lemon, I am not sure. I have not used it much, and I am not hard on my equipment. I have other DR equipment that has treated me well, I like DR Power, but this shredder has problems. Also, the oil fill/check is nearly impossible to access. An option on that engine is a fill tube with a dipstick. I can’t imagine it would add much to the cost, but it is a necessity, it’s very challenging to fill the oil as it is designed now. I called them again, after it jammed, the same day the leg broke, and explained I seem to have a defective chipper. They offered to have it fixed locally, or I could take it back apart and ship it back for a replacement, but I’m not sure I want this chipper, fixed or replaced. I asked about returning it as it is defective, which I can do, but I must pay $140 return shipping, even though it is defective. I’m not happy about that, as most companies pay the return shipping if you receive something that is defective, it does not seem right that I have to pay to return their defective chipper. They did offer to fix or replace it, I just don’t think I want another one of the same. And I am still within the 6-month trial, which I think is why I can return it at all, but again, I have to pay to ship it back. That’s my fault for not knowing that up front, but it’s not surprising either if you’re returning it only because you don’t like or want it. My issue is that I have to pay to return a defective chipper, still not sure what I’ll do, but likely will return it. I wish it had worked correctly, because it did work well chipping the smaller stuff and I hate giving a good company a bad review.

Love this - DR Wood Chipper with Shredder

DR Wood Chipper with Shredder 9.5 - just what I needed. I started with a small all electric from another company and found it might be fine for a small yard in a track home area. It was way too small for 7 acres in the mountains. The DR 9.5 is low gravity so it does not tip over, does handle 3" in the lower small opening and I can shove all kinds of small stuff in there too. The larger opening shredder is a little more picky and best with small stuff and leaves. It is a great space saver and easy moving it around.

Great chipper/shredder for the homeowner

I have now used the DR to clean up all of my Spring yard debris. I have a residential lot of 1/3 acre fairly covered with ponderosa pine and ash trees. It easily handled 2 - 3" branches and all of the shrub trimmings and pine needles. Great machine!

DR Chipper/Shredder

DR makes a quality product that provides as promised. I wish it would handle bigger stock, but this little machine really chews up the 1-2" stuff. This is my first DR product but have since purchased a Field and Brush Mower based on the performance of this machine. Neither have disappointed!! Great work DR, keep the products coming!

Very good machine

Received the chipper/shredder in just a few days. It was packed well and arrived with no issues. During assembly it was evident that there is no way to fill oil or even to check the oil with the chipper chute installed. While only three bolts hold the chute in place, it is still an inconvenience for it to have to be removed just to check the oil level. Thus the reason for 4 stars. The machine starts easy and is quite powerful. Have used it for a week now and have had no problem chipping oak limbs up to 3", although I suggest feeding the larger limbs slowly to keep from bogging down. Over all it is very well built, and I do recommend it despite the design fault on the oil fill/chipper chute location.

I've only owned this machine for a few weeks but during this time I've cleaned up my damaged trees and even had to take one 40' tree down. After getting all the firewood that could be salvaged I was left with a pile of branches and twigs as big as a two car garage. I really didn't think this chipper would be adequate but found out quickly I was wrong. After about fours I ripped through the pile of branches and was cleaning up the twigs. 3" branches 12' long just fly through this machine. The motor doesn't lug down at all. While using the shredder for twigs I quickly learned how to pace the stuff I was putting in the hopper. Put to much too quick and it will stall the motor. You have to understand how the shredder works as opposed to the chipper. Shredded material comes out like dust and chipped material comes out in quarter sized pieces. I wish the shredder worked as easily as the chipper but it is adequate for my uses.

This is one of many products we have purchased over the years and it performs as advertised. Starts right up and runs like a champ. Easy to assemble and with the built in handles on the chute we can move it around the property to where we are working. It works great on Blackberry canes. Thanks for making yet another great product.

I have had my eye on a chipper for a while. I recently bought a large piece of wood working equipment from what I thought was a solid company. It was damaged in freight and was more a nightmare returning it. I got my DR ,assembled it, gas and oil, one pull and I was chipping branches. I was impressed with the quality and design. Thank you

It took about 30 minutes to set up from the crate. Fired up on the first pull. I have a small orchard that was about 3 years overdue for some serious trimming along with a haystack pile of old limbs and debris. The DR 9.5 tore through it all in less than a day and never stalled. I was really pleased with how strong it was. For the home owner I say you will be absolutely happy with this machine. DR built it just right!

Some plusses first. The engine is much quieter than I expected. The chipper chips very quickly and effortlessly. Exceeded my expections there. The shredder on the other hand won't hardly take anything. I tried leaves and it won't even feed. Small twigs just sort of bounce around. Maybe I am missing something.

Assembly only took about a 1/2 hour. I filled with oil and gas and started on the very first pull. My son and I used it for about 3 hours over a 2 day period and had no problems at all. The chipping and shredding is unbelievably quick. You just cant load to quick or it will clog. I have used other residential chipper/shredders and this one is way above the rest.

Fantastic chipper/shredder-- beautifully engineered

I live on a forested acre of 100-foot-tall firs, cedars and maples in the Northwest. For years, after every winter storm, I've trucked branches that are too bushy or unsuitable for firewood to the recycling or transfer station 5-10 miles away for disposal. I've been studying chippers for two years, wondering if there was a machine that was small enough to easily store in my garage and affordable enough for residential use that could save me time over my trips to the transfer station. In my research I was generally discouraged by mixed reviews of other low cost chippers that require the operator to cut the sticks too straight or exert too much effort feeding them into the hopper. Last year I had considered splurging on a DR commercial chipper, but had decided the investment was too high for my acre parcel, and continued to drive branches offsite in my truck. After receiving an email about this all-new 9.5 DR chipper/shredder I watched the video of it in use, and quickly made the decision to try it. It looked to be the perfect solution for me. It arrived last week. Now that I have it, I could not be happier with it. The chipper basically self-feeds at about a foot per second (approximately), requiring no effort from the operator. Bushy branches need some pushing to collapse into the hopper, but the hopper funnel shape is perfect for this, and I have found that 10-foot-long fir and cedar branches with all their smaller branches and needles can get pulled in with little to no effort. The chipper can grind up sticks up to three inches in diameter, which is big enough for home use-- when they get larger than this I cut them up for the wood stove. The top shredder works great on leaves and small sticks and I'm sure will come in handy. It's a good shape, and seems to nicely direct the leaves into the hammers. This machine is nicely balanced, has a powerful flywheel and smooth running engine, and does not give me any noticeable vibration fatigue. It's easily movable around the yard, and takes up less space than a lawn mower in the garage. I feel environmentally sensitive using this instead of trucking branches to the recycling station. It is much better to use a cup of gasoline in the chipper than to drive a 4000 pound truck 10 or 20 miles, and the wood chips renew the soil in my forest while making pathways look nice. From a time standpoint, the chipper seems faster to me than the load-drive-unload-return process. It's even more efficient when I have a small brush pile that would not be a full load in the truck. The assembly took me about 40 minutes, and the chipper started on the first pull. So far, I have not seen anything I would change about this product. This was a great purchase. Thanks DR for making a high-quality affordable chipper for homeowners like me.

I was looking for a chipper to clean branches from our 1 acre property and when the garden dies in the fall I can't wait to shred garden debris before it goes into my compost pile. I have just finished about 2 hours of work with it and so far has held up nicely. I didn't notice the engine struggling when I was chipping 2-2 1/2" inch branches. Most chipper shredders I have used have had trouble with the chipping side of things, not this one, very fast!! Can't wait to see what it does to my garden refuse.

Just tested the new DR 9.5 Chipper Shredder. First of all, it's a great size. I have a big garden but a small garage. I love how easy this was store in my garage and then roll out to my garden on the weekend. Second plus: it ate all the garden garbage I gave it -- old bean plants, squash vines, weeds, no problem. I had a few branches from a nearby maple tree so I chipped those up as well. Works for me!

Engineering Review: DR 9.5 MS Wood Chipper with Shredder
Posted by: Erin L., lead product engineer from Vergennes, VT on 09/09/2015
Rating:
The DR 9.5 FPT Chipper w/ Shredder is our most compact model, but don't let the size fool you. Its super high rpm makes all the difference. The knife (backed by the combined flywheel/hammermill mass) striking at 160 mph chips with ease. Eight tightly packed shredding hammers (a mixture of flat and J shaped) spinning at 3600 rpm simply pulverize material. The robustness of this unit's direct drive design makes the high rpm possible. The hardened knife and hammers, overall solid steel construction, large hoppers, clever hand holds, and pneumatic wheels with ball bearings makes this unit DR brand worthy while still being light and maneuverable for homeowners with smaller properties.

Q.Will this 9.5 mulch Leaves in particular Oak leaves? or do you have a piece of Equiptment that will mulch them small?
A.The 9.5 Chipper Shredder will work great on all leaves, including Oak leaves! The end size will differ, depending on the condition of the leaves that you process. Thank you for your question!

Q.We get a LOT of cardboard boxes that we have to tear up and put in recycle....will this machine shred without plugging ?
A.It is not recommended to use the shredder for processed paper products, like cardboard. It is not what it is designed for. The Chipper Shredder is intended to be used with more organic material, like garden waste, leave, kitchen waste, and other "green" material.

Q.I am looking for a fast way to make compost. Can you mix in kitchen peels, shells etc. with leaves, sticks, and small branches? Also can I get a DR shredder/chipper with an electrical start? I am assuming that all of the units are gas powered.
A.Great question! The 9.5 Chipper Shredder is a great way to create a rich compost! You would want to process the garden and kitchen waste through the shredder hopper, and any larger branches through the chipper hopper. It will all come out the bottom, either onto the ground if you would like or into the collection bag if you have it attached.

Q.I have read that some chippers design makes it difficult to check and add oil. Please describe how your chipper is designed in this respect.
A.Changing your oil on the 9.5 Chipper/Shredder is nice and easy! Here are the instructions, right from the manual: Removing and Replacing the Engine Oil Tools and Supplies Needed: * 10mm Wrench * Rags and approved Container (for waste oil) * Small funnel * Engine Oil (see your Engine Manual for Oil specifications) Note: Drain the oil when the Engine is warm; warm oil drains quickly and completely. 1. Set the machine on a level surface, place a container between the wheels under the unit toward the right side, and remove the Oil Fill/Dipstick on the left side of the machine. 2. On the right side of the engine, use a 10mm Wrench to remove the Oil Drain Plug allowing the used oil to drain completely through the drain hole into an approved Waste Oil Container. 3. Replace the Oil Drain Plug, and refill with new oil

Q.Will the 9.5 model shred woody vines such as honeysuckle or wysteria without said vines getting wrapped around the flywheel? I have vines to go along with my trees and need to chip & shred both.
A.Thank you for your interest in the Chipper Shredder. There are two separate hoppers, one for vines and one for thicker, wooded material. The larger hopper is where you would put the vines,up to 1/2" thick, the material will go through a hammer mill system that will shred the material. The wooded material, up to 3" thick, will go into the smaller of the two hoppers, here it will be chipped with a knife before going out the bottom. Q.Is this 9.5 HP?
A.The Briggs and Stratton engine that is used on the Chipper Shredder is rated in foot-pounds of torque. Many engine manufacturers no longer rate their smaller engines by horsepower. They rate them by foot-pounds of torque. Rating by foot-pounds of torque is a trend that is spreading throughout the industry because it is a more accurate measure of power.
