Pro XL-SP stump grinder

I received my new electric start DR stump grinder a couple of days ago. It can do some serious stump grinding. I bought the largest model that is both self-propelled and has electric start I am very glad I have both features. It is a fairly good size machine and quite a chore to horse around. I found the self-propelling SP feature useful not only for getting to the stump, but also for final positioning while working down the stump. The first stump I ground was about 24 by 40 - pretty good size. It took me an hour to get it a few inches below grade, and that included time learning to use the machine. This machine definitely takes time to master. Be sure to wear protective items, especially eye protection as chips fly all over while grinding. It seems like a rugged machine and I can see it will take a lot of abuse over the years. My main complaint so far is that the machine only has a couple of inches clearance on the bottom and that space quickly fills with chips and debris from the grinding process. At that point it is very hard to make the machine move forward to take the next pass because the chips and debris in front of the bottom pan lift the drive wheels off the ground. I was continually backing the machine up, clearing the debris out from under it and then proceeding forward. This required starting the machine many times - hence the electric start was wonderful to have. The controls definitely take some getting used to. The operator presence and brake are on the left and the drive forward and throttle are on the right. After an hour I was doing most things correct, but it takes some thought. The second stump I did was about a foot in diameter and that one just took 3-4 minutes. I bought the hour meter accessory. I think I will be glad I have it. It has already been a good reminder of time on the machine. If I were just starting out looking for a stump grinder I would seriously look at the large SP model. I was using all the power the big engine could put out. And as I said above, the electric start and SP features were very useful when re-positioning for a new cut on a large stump. Although the machine comes mostly assembled, I found the direction book lacking quite a bit. It seems to me DR sends the same book for all its stump grinders so there are a variety of engines and details covered and it was not easy to follow which instructions were for my machine. DR has also transitioned to a disc brake from a band brake and there were absolutely no instructions pertaining to the disc brake in the book. I imagine they will update the book over time. All in all, I think this is a machine worthy of the DR name and will be one of my favorites as I learn to use it better.

Considering the cost of renting a stump grinder which may not have sharp cutters the cost of a DR stump grinder is recovered in short order. Assembly is easy and the product works as advertised.

I got a bit over 46hrs of grinding on my original set of teeth so I'm pretty happy with that. Just received my new set. Took about a week to get with standard shipping. Only complaint is that they are a bit pricey and should come with free shipping.

Q.can the teeth be sharpened
A.Thank you for contacting us. The cutting teeth cannot be sharpened. The tungsten carbide on the teeth tip is the same material used for drilling through bedrock. The 8 teeth can be rotated 3 times to create a new chipping surface. Each surface or side will last between 10-20 hours, a total of 30-60 hours per set. Teeth can be easily replaced in about 15 mins. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
