Overview

Top of the Line Horizontal-Vertical Model

Our top of the line Horizontal/Vertical splitter delivers 34 Tons of force for tackling the biggest logs. It is designed for easy transition between horizontal and vertical configurations. The horizontal mode is easiest for most splitting tasks. But when you come across an extra big round, you can save yourself a lot strain by simply pulling out a pin, easily rotating the unit into its vertical position, and splitting the log on the ground...no lifting required!

An easy-starting Briggs 14.5 FPT engine powers the 2 stage pump (13.0 GPM), generating 3500psi of splitting force. Logs up to 30" in diameter and up to 25" long are no problem. And the 34-Ton model's 16-second cycle time makes it one of the fastest hydraulic splitters in its class.

Road-Towable

A 2" ball hitch with safety chains comes standard, allowing you to tow the unit at speeds up to 45 mph on its big 16" tires. The jackstand folds up for transport, locking into place with a simple cotter pin.

34-Ton Horizontal Vertical Log Splitter (1:17)

Features
Switch from horizontal to vertical position on a DR log splitter

Easy Conversion

Switching from horizontal to vertical mode (or vice versa) takes only a few seconds. Just slip out a pin, rotate the unit, and re-insert pin to lock it into position. Lets you split those really big rounds without lifting the log onto the beam.

Good unit, competitive price when it is on sale. Got the 4 way splitting head as an extra which saves a lot of handling. Lots of hype around free shipping , hurry up and order , only to see same offer repeated a couple of weeks later. Worst part was almost 8 week delivery. Had to call them to get the bad news, no way to check actual delivery on line. Came close to splitting in the snow. Wanted to cancel the order as assembled units started showing up in local stores. Assembly was very difficult, did it by myself, took forever. A few parts missing for assembly. Instructions flat out incorrect in a couple of places too vague in others. Had to remove hydraulic cylinder to lift the main i-beam vertical for assembly. Unit seems to work well. I have never had a splitter so I really enjoy reducing wear and tear on my body, especially chuncks with branch grain pattern, no more getting 2 or3 wedges stuck. It does struggle a bit around 14 inches using the 4 way. Suspect I will need to use vertical only blade for larger logs. A bit fussy to get started, wish it had electric start option, none available. Lots of pulling to get it going. Overall I am very happy with it, understanding I come from a position of never having one.

I don't write reviews until I've had the equipment for at least a year. This log splitter has yet to be stopped. It pushes through all kinds of knots and hard wood. It starts within a couple pulls. Must turn gas off and run splitter until it starts to cut out then shut it down. If you move it before you do this then it has a very hard time starting because it flooded. Tows nicely behind my truck. Looking into buying a wood chipper when I can afford it.

Power to do the job...!

I recently purchased the DR 34-Ton Splitter. On Day one, I added oil to the engine and hydraulic fluid to the tank. Took it outside and started the engine on one pull. We split approx. 5 cords of hardwood with no difficulty whatsoever...! Did need to tighten some of the connections after the hydraulic oil heated up after an hour, but no problems after that. My brothers and friends were impressed with the power and functionality. The vertical splitting option is an obvious back saver and worked very well especially with the 4-way splitting attachment. I would not encourage use of the 4-way attachment with regular log splitting as it seemed to slow the process and left thin pieces that were more of a problem to clear. If you'd like more kindling, then leave it attached. :-) Overall, this unit is well built, a work horse and a time saver. I would definitely recommend purchasing this unit. For the money, it is superior to anything I have used in the past - in its class.

Have had this splitter for about a year now. It splits anything I give it with little effort. The 4-way wedge accessory is a plus after I split my big rounds into manageable pieces. I'm impressed with the engine. My only grips and why not 5 stars: The hydraulic return hose is a cheap thin clear wire reinforced hose and held on with hose clamps. It didn't take too many hours and vibration before that hose started to leak at the tank fitting no matter how tight the hose clamp was, which also eventually cut into the hose and made leak worse. I've replaced the hose with a much heavier duty (thick walled) nylon reinforced hose; problem solved. The linkage on the ram control lever is always loosening up becoming real sloppy to the point of falling apart, which it did once and was lucky to find that linkage on the ground to put lever control back together. I'm constantly having to re-pinch that linkage with a pair of pliers on the side without the retaining clip. Wish this unit came with a swing away trailer jack as seen on many other log splitters from other manufactures, rather than just a swing up/down support leg with no foot. This unit is heavy and it's a bear to put on my hitch after support arm is swung up and pinned ready for transport.

This is a very good log splitter ease to assemble you do need two people I did not have a helper so I used an engine hoist. It is pretty quick at splitting and does it effortless. It is very tough the shipping company dropped the unit on the dock the engine fell off the dock. All was ok. I am very satisfied.

Just received our 34 ton log splitter. Got it within one week. Even the guy at Con-Way was impressed with the packaging. He said he wished everyone packaged like that! My husband is currently assembling it. Probably would have gone easier with 2 people, but he's managing. Will update my review after we've used it.

I have nothing but good things to say about the DR 34 Ton Horizontal-Vertical splitter. I have used mine for two years now, and it has performed superbly. Nothing slows it down. In vertical position it has split enormous red oak stumps that I could barely roll into position. The engine barely changes pitch as the wedge relentlessly drives through tough knots. On even the biggest pieces, the piston has only a slight hesitation, and then there is a sudden, loud “crack” as the bark tears in half and the log splits in two. Everything about this machine is industrial-grade, heavy-duty. Even the shipping crate was impressive. Weighing about 500 lbs, the splitter came in a steel crate of heavy gauge angle iron that was finished with industrial grade grey paint. Nothing about the splitter is cheap. There are no shortcuts anywhere. I was able to assemble it by myself using a ratchet winch to raise the pneumatic cylinder to the vertical position required to attach it to the frame. It really takes two or three people to make this easier. Actual assembly was very simple with clear illustrations. All hardware was clearly marked and was complete. It is remarkably quiet and very powerful. Today, with an outside temperature of 24 f and a wind-chill of 16 degrees, it started on the second pull. It always starts on the second pull and then just hums. A real advantage to the splitter is safety. The cycle time is steady and efficient. It allows time to work at a comfortable pace that you can do for hours at a time without getting worked to death. (Although listed as 15 seconds per cycle, it is actually about half that time because most pieces of wood split right away. That means the wedge does not have to travel to full extension and return, saving lots of time.) And this means that the risk for crush injuries to a wayward hand or finger is almost eliminated completely. The DR service is also first rate. They respond immediately, are courteous and very helpful. They stand behind their no questions asked return policy if you have any need to return an item. You can tell the people in customer service are proud of their company and its products from their friendly, helpful attitude, I am glad I brought the 34 Ton model. It handles every thing I throw at it with ease. I just back my utility trailer up to the opposite side of the splitter and fill it with load after load of the best firewood I have ever had. And I have been using a “go-devil” for many years. But no more; I do not know why I did not get this splitter years ago. It is a beautiful piece of machinery and a joy to use. DR has engineered a real winner.

i consider our purchase very disappointing. first issue. came with no motor. the manual says it is in the shipping crate but it is not. checked shipping papers for a quanity and it was marked one package so assumed not another box. called DR, they said they would ship motor but at that time didn't have one to ship. after couple weeks ups delivered motor and on the same day Conway freight called to say they had a motor for us to pick up. why didn't DR know that one was shipped already? told conway to call DR to figure out how to return that one to DR. when we assembled splitter the first issue was that in an addendum about spacers on the wheel bearings. only thing spacers were not in crate. 2nd issue. the manual says motor is shipped with oil but that wasn't true, it was drained. next issue, why would you use hose clamps on the return line? you couldn't be talking ten bucks to have used flared fittings on that one too. as far as the splitter goes have only used about fifteen minutes and it seems to work ok. as far as the four way wedge goes it only sticks out from the vertical wedge 3.5 inches. when i watched the video before ordering the 4 way is attached with what appear to be 1/2 bolts and the wedge looks like it is much wider than the one we got. also the mounting hardware is only 5/16. i have a hard time seeing how you can justify the price for current design. it is very undersized for a 34 ton splitter.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR 34-ton log splitter. We certainly apologize for the mix up relating to the missing engine. We've noted that you have spoken to our Tech Support Department about all of the issues mentioned in your review. Your satisfaction is important to us. We certainly appreciate your business and thank you for choosing DR Power Equipment.

Have not had a chance to test fully since purchase was delayed from original order date. Had to use a friend's old splitter. Was not in stock but am glad I waited. Impressed with quality-went together easily. One log cradle bolt didn't line up with hole but drilled it out. Bolted it on. Impressed with quality and engine. Friends are impressed also-especially with the 34 ton rating and size of cylinder.

Wow!! Great splitter. So far I am very pleased with the splitter. I have only split few rank so far and this machine works wonderfully. I also purchased the 4-way wedge adapter. Really makes fast work on splitting. When I first purchased the splitter they said it was back ordered for 5 weeks. But that was not the case. The unit arrived at my house within two and a half weeks of ordering! I have used many other splitters and this one really surpassed my expectations. It is built like a rock and has enough power to make fast work of all types of wood.

Bottom line this is a well-built log splitter. We purchased the 4-way splitting wedge and the engine powers through 24-inch red oak logs effortlessly. We split about 5 cords of wood a year and this splitter and 4-way wedge is going to reduce our splitting time significantly. We encountered a few problems upon receipt of the splitter. 1. When we endeavored to install the engine we soon found that the mounting holes on the oil reservoir tank did not align with the mounting holes. We called the DR folks and learned that this was a recent quality problem that the engineers were dealing with. A couple of days later they sent me, via E-mail, a new hole pattern to fix the problem. We drilled the four new holes and mounted the engine. The DR folks sent us an engine hour meter gratis to thank us for drilling the engine mount holes. 2 After we completed assembling the splitter, filling the hydraulic tank and starting the engine every thing worked to specification. However, after 20 minutes of operation, I noticed a slight weeping of hydraulic fluid at the inlet and outlet fittings on the valve assembly. Another call to DR and they send us a package replacement o rings.

I was so looking forward to getting this splitter. You were backordered when I order it and waited about 6 weeks for it to arrive. When it does what its suppose to do, it's great. But a few problems make this more trouble than I thought it would be. Why would you use a screw clamp to secure the hydraulic hose to the splitter. Three times the hoses have popped off and fluid sprayed all over everything until I could turn it off. They hold ok until the wedge hits some strong resistance on a round and the pressure blows the hose off….and yes the screw clamps were tightly screwed down. Besides being a mess, the hydraulic fluid is expensive. The other major problem is the motor, which is a great motor, has no way to hold the throttle Open all the way (the rabbit setting). I've done a work around with a short bungee cord to hold it full opened when splitting. If I'm missing something as to how this should work, please tell me. The hydraulic fluid was leaking out of the wedge shaft for the first few days, but has finally stopped. Maybe the seals needed to seat themselves. And last, the lever that you pull down to make the wedge engage, no longer go up on its own. You have to hole it to make it go up or down. The first day it worked properly and then just stopped. Maybe you can tell me why this may have happened. I've bought a few other major pieces from DR and have been happy with them, but this splitter, for this price, doesn't fit the quality I expect from a DR product.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR® Horizontal / Vertical Log Splitter. We apologize for the difficulties you've been experiencing. Q.cast iron is a bad material for tension applications like this do you mean cast steel for the beam and foot assembly?
Welding cast iron is very difficult due to the high carbon content of the material. It will crack very easily. The foot appears to be welded to the beam and will surely be a weak point if it is not a cast steel or steel material. What is the composition of the material for the beam and the foot ? This is related to the 34 ton log splitter.
A.All three models of the DR Horizontal/Vertical log splitters are built similarly using the same materials for the beam. These components are actually made from low carbon steel rather than cast iron. The beam is actually a low carbon steel H-beam rather than welded plates. Q.Hydraulic Reservoir 4.8 Gal.Horizontal-Vertical Log Splitter 34-Ton Model SKU: WDS34XMN Hydraulic Reservoir 4.8 gal with a 2-stage Pump @ 13.0 gpm. This seems like a very small reservoir for a system this large. There is very little contact time with the reservoir walls for cooling. I feel there is going to be a fluid heating problem with this system. Look at the other brands of splitters and see the difference of the sump sizes. Glad I ordered one with the 1-year return policy. Thanks PS. Have you shipped any?
A.I spoke with the lead engineer on this machine and he informed me that we actually product tested this machine in the middle of summer. With our testers running cord after cord through it between 8 and 12 hours a day, day after day, we did not encounter any problems with the fluid over heating. The size of the reservoir has proven to be plenty sufficient for this machine.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Q.Will the 34 ton Horizontal-Vertical Log Slitter hold up to a heavy work load, say 15-20 cords of oak a year? Also how hard is it to find parts if something breaks? Is there any web sights that review this model or one similar

Yes, the 34 Ton Horizontal-Vertical Log Splitter will handle oak very well and will handle the 15-20 cords per year easily. There is a 4-way wedge available for it as well. We have a parts team here that will be able to send you the parts you need. Here is the web page with the reviews;

Q.The specs say this splitter has 16" tires. The tires in the pictures are not 16" tires unless maybe the are measuring the diam. I will be towing a splitter often and tires are big concern to me.
A.The tires on our Vertical/Horizontal splitter are 16" in diameter. They are rated for road towing up to 45 MPH. We have done rigorous testing on all of our equipment to ensure a safe machine.

Q.Does the 34 ton splitter have lights and wire harness? If it does not come stock with lights and harness, can they be purchased separately without having to buy the kit which has the fenders and hitch included?
A.Our Vertical/Horizontal splitters are road towable and are shipped standard with a 2" ball hitch with safety chains. Lights can be purchased for the unit if desired. However, we do not sell a kit specific with just lights.

Our Vertical/Horizontal splitters are great machine for the homeowner that is looking for versatility. In addition with the four way wedge, splitting wood has just became much easier with this unit!

A.The overall dimensions and weight of the 34-Ton Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter are:
