DR SP22 Mower

DR SP22 Mower (0:51)

A Professional Cut, Season After Season After Season . . .

Whether you use a walk-behind mower exclusively, or in tandem with a riding mower, you expect your machine to work as hard as you do and be there for you when you need it. The DR SP22 Mower's deck comes with a Lifetime Warranty – that's how confident we are that it will stand the test of time.

The DR engine has 8.0 ft-lbs gross torque (174cc) for smooth, easy cutting. The self-propelled drive allows you to maneuver around your property at a comfortable walking speed. The ball-bearing-mounted wheels glide smoothly, making it easy for anyone to mow in comfort. And the 22"-wide cutting width means fewer passes to finish your lawn. Customize your cut with nine cutting heights and two discharge options. Choose your cutting height with a single lever and either bag or mulch your clippings.

The SP22 features a one-piece, 22”-wide, cast aluminum deck that is virtually indestructible. And we back that up with a Lifetime Warranty. Use it year after year…give it your worst! If it fails, for any reason, we’ll replace it at no cost to you.

DR OHV Engine

The SP22 features a high-quality DR engine with overhead valve and 8.0 ft-lbs gross torque (174cc). Choose between manual- or electric-start (featuring push-button starting).

Uses solid metal gears for long life and reliability. Allows you to walk at a comfortable pace without pushing. You operate the drive with a simple, easy-action bail bar which you gently press against the padded handle.

Ball Bearing Mounted Wheels

For easy rolling and long life. No cheap plastic sleeves that are easy to damage and hard to repair!

Single Point Height Adjustment

Select from 9 different cutting heights with a single lever. Cut as low as 1.0” (lever all the way back), or as high as 3.4” (lever all the way forward).

Electric Start Available!

Our electric-starting model has a push-button starter conveniently mounted on the handlebar. Just pull the blade control bar back against the padded handle, push the starter button, and you’re up and running! (Easy recoil pull-start for backup.)

Nice mower, but.......

Still breaking this mower in. Have about 3 hours on it. I'm a Honda guy, but I have a favorable opinion of the DR22. Except for ONE big issue. This mower is way to fast. They say feather the drive lever. That's a poor excuse for the way this mower will run away. The fast speed affects the cut of the lawn and when you try to feather the speed the mower becomes unstable. Anyway, with the exception of bolts falling out and the speed issue, and some cheap plastic parts the mower is nice. Its no Honda, but it also is 6 or 7 hundred dollars. Time will tell just how good this mower is. Sincerely Kevin, Browndale, Pa.

Most pleased with initial quality. Haven't had an excellent mulching walk behind, self-propelled lawn mower of this quality in a long time. When mowing is done, the lawn looks like it has been vacuumed. I did have a little problem with assembly.

The mower arrived as promised but the blade control and the drive control were not connected. I called your number and spoke to technician Kay, who was very helpful and advised me how to get controls connected. I've only used mower once but it worked excellently and I'm very satisfied with DR. I do have one observation to make and that is the speed handle sort of interferes with the the pull rope to start the engine. I also own a DR brush cutter that is quite old and I have never had any problems with it. It indeed does as advertised. I hope this mower end up as good. Bill McKenny

Very pleased with mower it performed as advertised and started with the first pull of the cord. Though I wish it had a double blade system to mulch the grass better without leaving a grass trail and a little better pace control for walking speed or I would have given a 5 star review.

I bought this mower after having countless different mowers that are just not worth having. This is the 2nd best mower I think I have ever owned. It is only 2nd by a commercial grade mower that Cub Cadet use to make. If this mower had an optional rear discharge chute that could be put on the mower in place of the bagger. And if it had a 3 speed transmission I think this would be the best mower I had ever owned. Other than those short coming this thing is a beast.

Disappointed with trying to mulch clippings,it bogs down with grass accumulation ,requiring walking to be turtle speed. Also did not know it has no oil drain plug, and when using a bag ,it should have had a blade brake because you get covered in clippings even on low when taking off the bag. Have a Dr brush mower that's been great, but this 22" is not .

This is the second DR machine I have bought. I also have a DR trimmer that I have used since 1993 and have had no problems with it. The mower works very well, although I think it would be better with a side discharge. I like the idea of an aluminum deck and the throttle control.

Does any one out there have an issue with grass collecting and bogging down self drive on this mower? Due to drought only used once last year and grass collected so bad had to remover cover and put belt back on pulley. Called and was told to remove cover and clean out grass. SERIOUSLY!!! I got tired of carrying a screwdriver in my pocket and cleaning out 3 times to mow yard so I now leave the cover over so grass doesn't jam it up. I bought this mower on reputation of DR Power. I have two DR trimmmers and love them. But I am totallly frustrated and disappointed in this mower. I gave it 2 starts for easy start up and one handle height adjustment.

This is a pleasure to use, especially the one touch height adjustment control. It cuts my lawn like no other I have used. Cut looks professional. I have a problem with the bagger blowing particles directly at me while using. I may try to line the top of the bagger so it does not allow dust and particles through. If possible, I would design front wheels that turn.

After 3 Years Still Going Strong

In the 3 years, only had 3 small problems with the DR22. 1. Wouldn't start. Solution: dirty carburetor. Dismantle and clean. Replace spark plug. Starts & runs great now. 2. Rear drive wheels would lock and not roll backwards making a 180 degree turn impossible without skidding wheel. Solution: remove wheels and grease everything possible. Seems better now. 3. Plastic throttle control broke Solution: common part found on Amazon. Bought 2 out of China for $10. Otherwise a great mower with a great cut that gets used frequently.

Well built except bag construction

I have 2 DR products (field and brush mower, 3 point chipper) and have always been pleased with the quality. Needing a new push mower, mostly for trimming, I purchased the 22" last year and have been pleased with the construction and reliability. I use it mostly for small areas, so not a lot of hours, and the only issue I have had is with the bag. After only minimal use, 10-20 hours, the liner on the top of the bag ripped and was packing grass between the thin liner and outside liner. I guess this is there it keep dust from coming up. Contacted warranty dept and they were very helpful in sending a new bag. Looking at the new bag I see there is a seam on the top of the thin liner about half way back (looks like a weak point). I installed and use it about 2 hours being extra careful not to hit any sticks or pine cones that might tear this thin lining. After 2 hours, the seam was ripped open and again grass was packing in between layers. I cleaned the bag best I could and took Gorilla brand tape and resealed the seam on the inside. Then taped from the seam back to front part of bag with strips (high wear area near discharge). I have used several times now and the tape shows to be well stuck and it working again. I think the product development dept needs to take a look at this weak point. Hope this helps someone. TC

Some nice features, but it bogs down
Posted by: Doug L. from Jersey Village, TX on 02/15/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
I bought this mower based on my experience with the quality I have had with a DR trimmer purchased earlier. The mower is indeed a quality mower you would expect, my favorite feature being the ability to adjust the cutting height with a single lever. My disappointment, however, comes from the fact that you must use the bag if you want any type of discharge. Otherwise, all of the cuttings stay inside the mower (i.e. mulching), causing it to bog down on a very regular basis, which explains why they have to make the self propelled speed a very slow walk. I have no need to bag the cuttings so I have no choice but to let it mulch, but you must be patient toggling between a very slow self propel vs completely stopping to let the motor catch up from the mulching. Most issues could be solved with a side discharge converter but they do not offer one with this mower.

Commercial Design...Residential Price

Bought this mower yesterday @ Davis Small Engine in Burkburnett TX & used it right away. I mistreated my Husqvarna that I loved & burned up the engine (shame on me). This mower is light weight has a very nice, padded ergonomic handle design and consistent walk speed. Wish it would walk faster though when going through shorter grass. The engine starts easy & sounds powerful but the throttle control lever is either low or high, no middle ground. Really wish it had a blade stop for emptying bag but w/ an easy pull start it's not a big con. Deck height adjustment is SUPER easy, 1 lever. Bag is very large & chute plug works well but is a tad difficult to get into place. Only disappointment is the lack of any discharge capability, may have to make my own. For the price I was going to pay for a Husqvarna or Toro or Troy-Bilt at Lowe's or Home Depot this has an equally powerful engine (7.25 HP) & all the same features just doesn't look as "sexy" w/ a more commercial look. I definitely think I made a good decision buying this DR & not another "name brand"

I agree with all the positive reviews. This is my third product from DR , my first being a power wagon 21 years ago and it operates as it did the first day. ( Zero maintenance). As to the need to change oil, I contacted B&S and the design of this engine runs dramatically cooler, hence oil breakdown is minimal. However, if you want to change the oil with ease I suggest buying a good siphon which really minimizes the mess. The throttle is very exact and can be set to your preferred walking pace. While I haven't had it long, it is performing as advertised.

Ordering and delivery was painless and fast. Ordered on a Friday night, had the machine the following Wednesday. Assembly was easy, no tools required. If you do not plan on disassembling the handle frequently, be sure to use Loctite Medium, or a similar product, on the handlebar nuts with the triangular handles. I have found that similar nuts WILL loosen up and fall off, leaving you to scour the lawn looking for them. Also, read the engine manual for specs to be sure to add the correct quantity of oil. For B&S 7.25 EX engines, this is 15 ounces. The DR manual calls for 16 ounces. Believe B&S. When oiled and gassed, the unit started on the first pull, which surprised me. This does not seem to be a fluke, since I started and stopped the motor about 10 times. The mulching cut itself was very smooth. The grass was about 6" tall, and the machine had no problems with a height of about 3". The only gripe I have is with B&S failing to put an oil drain plug on this motor to save a few pennies. Some have claimed the service life of the oil exceeds that of the the engine. I doubt this. I also have a 26 year old mower with a Tecumseh which has had oil changes yearly, and runs fine. On the whole, the DR22 seems to be a very good unit and I would recommend it for any who want quality.

Good mower
Posted by: L Scott M. from OREGON CITY, OR on 06/14/2016
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
The mower appears to be well built. I used it briefly. It started up, ran well and did a good job. The only criticism I have is the installation instructions. The machine was shipped in a box with the control cables unattached to the respective controls on the handle. The instruction manual (printed in black and white and somewhat dark) denoted steps for putting the machine together. The illustrations were hard to see specific parts because they were dark (my copy anyway) and the written narrative was not very helpful. As the cables are considered very important, I wanted to get their attachment right without crimping or bending them. It took me about a half hour to connect the cables with little guidance from the manual, and with a couple of disassembly/reassembly efforts. I pretty much had to figure it out by myself through trial and error. Bottom line... redo your installation instructions making sure that the figures or illustrations are clear and add clearer information on cable hookup... or just attach the cables to the handle controls before shipment if you can. Otherwise, everything seems to be fine.

So far the Dr 22 has performed very well. Assembly out of the box was simple. I followed the instructions and had no problems. The single height adjustment is excellent and the engine starts right up - easy peasy. I love how it sounds like a 1920's Model T! The mower has great suction and easily fills the catch bag. The handlebar controls are pretty straight forward but a few decals to remind the operator what the different bars do would be nice. For the money so far I'm very happy and would gladly recommend this product to a friend.

Have had the DR22 mower for almost 1 year and mows as well as the day I got it. Have mowed in every grass condition imaginable - wet, very wet, tall, dusty, full of leaves, weeds, sticks, scattered with pine cones, mulching, and even with slight snow on it. A perfect cut every time and always starts in 2 pulls max. Yes it does get dirty and needs to be hosed off and cleaned, but gets used A LOT! Just changed the oil and probably time to sharpen the blade after mowing up all those pine cones and sticks. Thank you DR for making such a terrific lawn mower.

While it's too early to cut the grass, I did put everything together, added fresh gas, let it sit for a minute, then pulled the starting cord. I started right up. I am impressed with how easy it is to change the mower height, a three year old can do it. The wheel bearings make it easier to move around too. I enjoy cutting grass, so I can't wait for it to get long enough to try out the SP22.

Added oil and gas and it started on the first pull!!!! I mowed the yard and it is wonderful. The wheel adjustment is awesome and the best I have ever used. This mower is under powered. It does not cut if the grass is very high, I usually mow the yard every other week. The worst is that the mower does not have any throw out schute for throwing the grass out.

Under-Powered

High quality mower. I have a yard full of very thick centipede grass. I am disappointed with the power and have to stop frequently to allow the engine to catch up. The mower struggles to self-propel as well and requires a lot of my effort to push. If it were not for the quality of the deck and the ease of operation, I would have returned it. I am stuck with it because the wife will not use it. Hopefully I do not regret my decision.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR® Self Propelled Lawn Mower. The issue you describe may be a case of needing to set your cutting height to something a bit higher if your grass is both really high and unusually thick. In this case the higher setting may resolve what you’ve described. This is a terrific mower and customers are happy with its performance. If our suggestion does not seem to remedy the situation; please call our Tech Support Department as they may want to investigate further what might be happening and offer other solutions. We want you to be happy with your purchase. Thank you again for your business and for choosing DR® Power.

I was skeptical of purchasing any power equipment online however I'm very glad that I did. The mower was easy to assemble and after putting oil and gasoline in it I mowed my lawn and discovered that the mower cut and mulched leaves better than the mowers used by the lawn service that I previously had maintaining my yard. It started on the first pull and performed as detailed in the operating instructions. I'm looking forward to many years of mowing and dollar savings with my mower and other yard maintenance products that I have purchased from DR.

Shipped on time. 30 minute assembly time. You will need to add oil none supplied. Starts first time every time. Love the one lever height adjustment and how easy it pushes when the self propelled isn't activated. Self propelled works very good. Crating was very adequate. This is the 3rd DR product I now own all have been superior. Thankyou!

The 7.25 engine is really strong. Mower starts easy and the cut is great. The bag opening is a bit too small which makes it so the cuttings don't shake out easily. also, I would prefer that the engine doesn't stop when you let go of the handle.

Positives: Easy assembly, 1 pull to start, discharges to the rear, plenty of power for thick grass and solid construction. Negatives: Only one drive speed and sometimes the height adjustment lever gets moved when mowing near shrubs and bushes. Overall: One of the best mowers that I have ever owned. Very satisfied.

A bit of a puzzle to assemble

Mower arrived well packed and most setup was straightforward. Owner's manual downloaded from DR website made no mention of how to connect control cables to the traction clutch bar and blade control bar. That required disconnecting the cable bracket on the handle. After oil and gas were added, the engine started with a few pulls, and the machine operated normally.
Response from DR SupportThank you for providing feedback on the DR Self Propelled Lawn Mower. We appreciate your comments and are passing along the information about the control cables. We hope you enjoy your new mower and look forward to hearing from you again. Thank you for choosing DR Power!

This mower has replaced a 50 year old cast-deck mower that had just quit on me. I didn't have any hope of finding another. This is wonderful. It's as easy to use without using the self propelled as it is with it. Always starts on either the first or second pull. I am 77 years old and I don't feel like continually pulling some thing to start it. Shouldn't have to. Love it.

I am 70 years old and cut my own grass and work in my yard. It still takes an hour of continuous mowing to cut the front yard and 45 minutes to cut the back, but I am not as tired as I have been with my old mower. The controls are more logically placed and the mower cranks on the first pull, even when it came out of the box and was oiled and fueled, it cranked on the first pull. I see me using this mower for many more years to come. Thank you for producing a great product here in America.

I live in the Pacific Northwest where half the year you mow wet grass. After rusting through 2 steel base mowers, decided on this mower primarily due to it's rust free aluminum base. Other comparable aluminum base mowers from other brands cost 50% more. Ordered mower and it arrived in just 5 days, and 3 of those days were weekend/holiday. Unboxed and assembled it (20-25 minutes), filled with oil (not supplied) and gas. First pull (no kidding!!!) it started. I adjusted the height and mowed my lawn. Absolutely perfect job mowing. No grass in the face (as posted in other reviews) or anything like that. Just a perfect cut. The walking pace is a bit odd as you must push it a bit to tell it what speed you walk at. Once it figures out your walking speed, it takes off on it's own. It has a large grass bag so no need to empty often. Cannot think of a single negative thing to write about this mower or company. I'd give this 6 stars if I could. Best mower I've ever owned and I plan to get many years of service from it.

I find everything about this mower to be very good except for the fact that it is very hard to start. It started fairly easily first time-a few pulls- probably do to getting it's first taste of gas. However after running thru the first tank and refueling it was a 38 pulls 2nd start. So I assumed I should not run tank dry which I did not do the next time. However it still was about 30 pulls before it started and has been doing this ever since. Sure wish I knew the answer.

I purchased this mower to replace my 21 inch other brand Tri Cycler used 15 years by me and 3 years by Previous owner. The DR 22 in Self Propelled Mower appears to be built to DR standards. I also have a 15 year old DR All Terrain Mower. Pro's The Dr 22 inch mower will cut through 6 inch grass with no problem if the back cover is held out about 1 inch. I use a 3/8 wooden dowel at the top to accomplish this. The Blade is tremendous more like the All Terrain Mower. Ball bearing wheels are a great advantage a weakness on the other brand. Con's The gas tank is too small. I would like a side discharge option like my other mower. I do not consider slipping the Drive belt a viable Option for a Variable Speed Drive Mower. The other mower had a Two Speed Gear Transmission and you could slip the belt. I use it on 3 Acres so my cons may not be viable to all.

I love my new mower. I have just mowed my large front yard that was getting tall and with the fog in the area was quite wet and it worked beautifully. It cut the tall grass and weeds with no effort and never gave my any problems. It was nice not to have to do the pushing as I have had to do in the past and also not having to go over it 2-3 times to get it cut. The Dr did it the first time with no effort. Love it.

My wife does the mowing, cause she loves it. This is her response to the new DR mower. Hi, not sure at first about having two levers on the handle. After the second time using the mower I found this to be a huge plus for going around trees and along fences. My old mower I always had to pop a wheeley to go around, back and forth. Now I just release the handle and push, pull will ease not having to worry about burning up the drive. Love, Love, Love the lever to change elevation of the wheels. With one hand I can do this with out any effort at all. I was not sure about not having a side exit area for the grass and stuff. This mower mulches so fine it spits everything out with ease. And yes....has started on the first pull. We have a lot to mow, (4 acres and yes I push it) I think this mower is going to do it just fine. Thanks DR.

Overall a great product. I had trouble connecting the drive bar cable, had to break the "nub" to get it to stay in. Nothing in the manual about connecting the cables. Would have liked side discharge. The mulch feature will never be used and probably not the basket. Did use the basket for first run and it filled up very quickly. The engine starts on the first pull. Almost no accumulation of clippings inside hull, even mowing a dewy lawn. The discharge did however clog up with debris, but that didn't seem to hurt operation (guess it was just like having the mulch attachment in place). Suppose it's designed to work best with the basket attached. What a huge engine. I once had a motorcycle with a 90cc engine and this has 190cc. Well, only used twice, but it looks like a winner.

DR22 Self-Propelled Mower

Rating: Product Review Stars: 1.00 star rating
Mower looks nice and DR Customer Service is very good. However, I only rate this mower 1 out of 5 stars as the bagger simply does not work properly and the self=propelled pace is extremely slow. The issue with the bagger is that it does not seal against the discharge shoot and the grass clippings are shot out of the bag all over you. A very, very poorly designed bagger system. Pros are powerful motor, one-touch cutting height setting, and excellent mulching cut. However, my desire was for a good bagging mower, and this mower is simply terrible when used for bagging (essentially unusable for bagging). I would return for refund but the shipping charges are very high.
Response from DR SupportThank you for the feedback on the DR 22" SP Lawn Mower. We are sorry that you've had difficulty with the bagger attachment. I have .75 acre lot with several steep contours. The power feature made short work of the lot. No struggling up the slopes. Wheels held traction, no spinning. Cut heavy grass without bogging down. The one lever cutting height change is WORTH A HUNDRED BUCKS right off the top. Lever moves with very little effort. My version of the mower had the non prime engine. I added oil, gently pulled the rope through twice and it started like a champ on the third firm pull. It has done this every time I've started it; about a dozen times since it arrived. It is heavier than I am used to, but the power wheels move it along without effort and when turning, the bearings in the wheels make the turn easier than my old non-power mower by far.

I bought the mower based on the company advertising. I like that it is very light weight, very quick and easy to adjust the height and seems to have good power.I don't like that it discharges out the back as the grass clumps if it is at all long or wet. I prefer side discharge if not bagging. The ground speed is very slow and I haven't been able to adjust anything to improve that. I called technical service and was told they would look into the issue and get back to me in two days. They never got back to me.Also, the engine usually starts without a problem, but at times it won't start even though it was run 10 to 15 minutes previously. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for the starting issue.I hope it is as durable as advertised because the other issues make me less than satisfied.

have only used the unit three times, purchased it to use as a trimmer, where I can't get my larger John Deere X300 mower. Have been trying to adjust the drive bar so that it will allow me to move the mower slower, instructions call for full throttle to run the blade, but when you try to work in tight places, moving forward and back around trees and bushes is not easy. Partial application of the bar ends up with a lot of belt chatter and spinning of wheels. Also seems like it uses a lot of fuel. Doubt I run it more than forty minutes and have run it dry twice. Then can't start it after fill up. Told to loosen fuel cap to start, but to no avail. Put it away and it will go the next day. Not much help there. I'm working on hilly ground and need the help to move the mower forward, let it roll back, and then move forward again.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review to our website. We are sorry to learn you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of your DR22 Mower. As you mention, the drive speed is controlled by the amount of bail bar “squeeze”. The starting issue could be spark plug related. Try changing the plug & the issue will hopefully go away. The plug should be the equivalent of a Briggs & Stratton part #591868 gapped to .020” if the engine code date is 110701 or later. If the code is earlier it should be gapped to .030”. We’ll get in touch with you about this.

Well constructed but poorly engineered

Received the mower and assembled it within three days. If you don't obey the shutdown ritual faithfully, it ceases to start unless you wait at least one hour, after which it starts on two pulls. Because you have shut down to empty the bag, it can take three or more hours to mow an average lawn unless there is NO deviance from the prescribed shutdown ritual. Contacted DR Support to investigate an RMA and was convinced to take mower to an authorized repair facility nearby. DR Support called the facility and made some arrangements. At the facility was told they were only a Briggs & Stratton warranty provider, but because the problem seemed to be with the engine, they would check out the problem. Still waiting to hear from the repair facility.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you are experiencing a problem with your DR22 Mower. We appreciate you taking the time to post a review about it. Shutting the engine down is just moving the throttle to stop and then releasing the bail bar. This allows the fuel already in the carb/cylinder to burn off. Make sure the spark plug is gapped to the correct setting (.020”) & isn’t fouled. If you still have issues after getting it back from the shop, please let us know.

The best lawn mower made!!

Over the years I've had a lot of different lawn mowers, but this one is by far the best that I have ever owned. Its easy to start, easy to adjust, doesn't stall in thick grass and doesn't leave clumps when mulching, and it has a rugged feel when being used.

Easy assembly. Add oil and gas and I was mowing within an hour. Great speed control. Easy height adjustment. I'd recommend larger diameter and wider tread drive wheels. My experience has been that drive wheel tread wears out faster. But overall, it's everything it's advertised to be.

Frustration

I received my new mower a week ago. Once I got it out of the box and assembled, it would not start. A 25 or 30 minute call to DR and I was told to try loosing the gas cap and retarding the throttle and little. Sure enough, it started on about the 8th pull. I tried it again the next day and after a number of pulls, it started again. Today I was prepared to use it for the first time. First, the hooks on the bag were wider than the space between the mower handles. I had to put the bag frame in a large furniture clamp and squeeze it down so it would barely fit on the mower. Then I tried to start the thing. Again, it will not start and after going through all of the suggested steps above, and about 10-15 pulls, it still will not even fire. So now I have a fancy new $300 mower that won't start and it has not even touched the lawn yet. So today I called DR service...was told the fellow who is trained on this machine was on the other phone and he would call me right back. It is now over two hours and I still haven't heard from anyone. I have owned three DR String Trimmers over the years and found them to be excellent products and the service to be outstanding. I don't know what's goin on with this now, but my patience is running very thin. I cannot recommend this product based on my experience. Even though it has a B&S engine, the thing is made in China. Very disappointing. My wife and I wanted this mower because it was guaranteed to start on only one or two pulls. I'm ready to go back to Toro.

I have a vacation home in the NC mountains that needs a tractor AND a smaller mower to keep in line. My old john Deere walk behind is on its last legs so I've been looking for a replacement for a while. Only "commercial" models have been in the running... I need power, reliability and capability on all terrains..then I saw the DR 22 mower...well today I tried it for the first time...it is simply awesome...obviously well built....cast aluminum deck alone is worth the price, and it runs up hills and cuts like a champ...the one lever height adjuster is fantastic...why haven't all the other brands come up with such a great idea..well done DR. This machine would be a bargain even at a couple of Franklins more. I've done the research.

Overall I am pleased with the mower after 5 hours of use. The B & S Quantum 725 EX series engine starts as advertised. Mine started on the first pull. This mower cuts grass very well. The cutting height adjustment lever (spring assisted) is slick. I would like to see markings on the mower just above the height locking notches. It adjusts from 1-3.4 inches. The ball bearing wheels allow this big mower to roll easily and the rear wheel drive handles two severe slopes in my backyard easily. The reason I am giving the mower 4 stars is that the mower shoots grass back on you when bagging. The grass catcher does not seal properly. Also I did not have much success following the recommendations on cleaning the under deck of the mower. With the mower on a flat surface (running) you are supposed to shoot water in front of the right rear wheel. Once you don't see any more discharge you are supposed to run the mower for a few minutes to help dry it out. I ended up with dense dripping green water for quite a while afterwards, which stained my driveway.
Response from DR SupportWe apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered. Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We’re glad that it is working well for you otherwise. We will be sure to bring your concern to the attention of our representatives to help avoid similar issues in the future. We will contact you to discuss these issues.

Throttle control

Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
The mower appears to be well built, as are other DR products with which I am familiar. The one major problem is the lack of a throttle control. While the ground speed can be adjusted with the variable speed drive, the engine speed is always flat out. This lack of controllability is neither desirable or safe. Mahalo.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review to our website. We are sorry to learn you are not fully satisfied with the DR22 Mower. Over the past 10yrs or so, some engine manufacturers have done away with the throttle control on walk behind mowers. Smaller, air cooled engines are designed to be run at full speed for best efficiency/cooling & are preset at the factory this way. Last year’s model with the Subaru engine doesn’t have the throttle control. The new model with the Briggs & Stratton engine does. We appreciate & share your concern for safety. Both versions of the DR22 meet the safety standards required for a walk behind mower Thanks again for leaving a review. We will pass your comments to our Product Development department for review.

Q.If there are issues while under warranty, what is the process to get repaired. Required to ship it back to DR? Expected turnaround time? Who pays shipping? Thank you.
A.If there is a problem with your mower or you have any questions or concerns, we ask that you contact our Technical Support Department and we can help troubleshoot, get you any components you may need or refer you to a local service shop - or any of the above. Warranty repairs are handled by local authorized repair facilities in your area.  Depending on whether it is an engine issue or a situation with some other aspect of the mower, we can usually find someone in our national service referral listing to work with us and that is convenient for you. Warranty repairs cover any defect or failure in materials and workmanship for Two Years.  Extended Warranties are also available for up to an additional three years. Maintenance issues are not covered under warranty.   Under the terms of our 6-Month Trial Offer you may return the mower for a refund or replacement (less shipping costs) if you are not satisfied with it during that time period. But we do not usually return machines here for repairs. The 6-Month Trial Offer, Warranty terms and Return options are outlined at this web link: http://www.drpower.com/pages/content/customer-support/shopping-resources/trial Thanks for your interest.

Q.Does this mower have a clutch for blade operation.
A.The DR 22" Self Propelled Lawn Mower does not feature a blade brake clutch. Unless you have a debris crowded yard, it is not always advantageous to have this system.

As with any clutch system, the complexity of the mower can become an issue as well as an increase in maintenance costs.

Q.Is it okay to use synthetic oil in this mower? Mahalo.
A.With a new mower, it is important to break-in the mower engine. The first 5 hours of use is considered the break-in period. This breaking-in process will remove any loose debris from the motor housing and also heat up the engine seals. By running the engine and then performing an oil change, you will also remove any loose metal shavings that may be inside the engine.

We recommend using SAE 30 high detergent oil for the break-in period. After this, you can use synthetic oil.

Q.When shipped does the mower come with oil in the engine or will I need add oil after delivery?
A.Due to strict Federal laws, all machines that utilize gasoline, oil or other flammable liquids must ship without these fluids. Make sure you add oil and gas before starting the engine on your new mower.

Oil capacity for the DR 22" Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is 20 fl oz and the oil type we recommend is 30 Weight High Detergent.

We offer a Maintenance Kit for the mower which contains all the wearable parts that you will eventually need and also 1 quart of DR Oil.

Q.How do you change the oil on the 22" Self Propelled Lawn Mower?
A.You have two options to drain the oil from the lawn mower. Run the engine a few minutes before changing, as warm oil flows better and carries more contaminants.

Ensure the fuel cap is tight and remove the dipstick.
Tip the mower onto its side with the air filter up to drain the used oil out through the oil fill tube into an approved waste oil container.
Lower the machine when done and slowly pour fresh oil into the oil fill tube until the oil level reaches the full line on the dipstick.
Do not overfill, insert and fully install the dipstick when the oil level is correct.

The other option that makes draining oil a breeze is our Oil Extractor Pump. Just remove the dipstick, insert the extractor tube and pump! It's great for just about any equipment that uses oil. The calibrated walls allow for easy measurement of the oil extracted, holds 1-1/2 gallons.

The Oil Extractor Pump can be viewed and/or ordered at the following web address: http://www.drpower.com/shop-by-category/maintenance/maintenance/oil-extractor-pump-vacuum.axd

Q.I noticed that in the maintenance kit you provide two bottles of enzyme fuel treatment. Does this mean you need to add this treatment every time you refill with gas? I have a Toro currently and it does not need an additive for the fuel.
A.Thank you for contacting us. The Ethanol Fuel Treatment is to be used if you use ethanol gas. We recommend that you put it in the gas can that you use to fill your machines with.

All gas powered equipment that is using ethanol gas should use the treatment. It breaks down the water created by the ethanol and keeps the fuel system clean.

Q.Does DR plan to install a throttle on this mower?
A.The mower is designed to run at full throttle. You can slow the motor down but this will slow the mower blade down and possibly stall the motor. Also, if the mower blade is not spinning at the proper speed, it will affect the ability to cut the grass.

Since we do not know what our Product Development Team may have on the drawing board at this time regarding any changes to the mower, we will pass along your inquiry to them.

Q.Does this mower have a gas tank shut off valve which allows you to run the carburetor out of fuel when the machine goes into storage?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The DR SP-22 Self Propelled Lawn Mower does not have a gas tank shut off valve. There is no need to drain gasoline from the engine if a fuel stabilizer is added according to instructions. Run the engine for 2 minutes to circulate the stabilizer throughout the fuel system before storage.

If gasoline in the engine has not been treated with a fuel stabilizer, it must be drained in to an approved container. Run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel. The use of a fuel stabilizer in the storage container is recommended to maintain freshness.

We do offer the DR Fuel Treatment, here is the web page;

Q.Catalogue says never need to change oil, just add as needed? Is this correct?
A.That is correct! While the EXi engine requires that consumers need to only check the oil level and add as necessary, regular scheduled maintenance must still be performed. There are two major reasons consumers usually need to change their oil: 1) Debris has gotten into the oil, causing it to get dirty, and dirty oil causes wear on the engine 2) And through regular running of the engine, the oil heats up, causing it to breakdown and create sludge. The Briggs & Stratton EXi engine uses an automotive style paper air cleaner element that features a press-fit element design to keep dirt out of the engine. And an improved oil fill tube with extended flange protects the tube from debris during routine oil checks. Additionally, the Overhead Valve Design of the EXi engine, and its innovative scroll design and cooling package, means the engine runs cooler, reducing the oil temperature. And cooler oil means slower decay and breakdown of the oil. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Q.I live in a very rocky area. How well does this mower handle small to mid-sized rocks?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR SP-22 Self Propelled Lawn Mower.

The SP-22 is designed for smooth lawns. The rocks will damage the mowing blade very quickly. The DR Trimmer/Mower will work better on rough, rocky property. They have the much larger wheels that handle the rough terrain very well, and they cut with a very thick, heavy duty cord. Here are the web pages with the different models of Walk Behind Trimmer/Mowers.

Q.How many ounces of oil do I put in the new mower.
A.The Lawn Mower is shipped with no oil. Traces of oil may be in the reservoir from factory testing. You will need approximately 20 ounces of SAE 30 high detergent oil. Fill the reservoir slowly, checking the level frequently to avoid overfilling.

We do not recommend using special oil additives, as other types of oil could cause problems with the operation of the machine.

Q.What is the horsepower of this engine?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

Many engine manufacturers no longer rate their smaller engines by horsepower. They rate them by foot-pounds of torque. Rating by foot-pounds of torque is a trend that is spreading throughout the industry because it is a more accurate measure of power. All of our machines are fitted with engines that are more than powerful enough to do the work they were designed to accomplish.

A.Hello, The SP22 does have a minimum cutting height of 1". As long as the area you're cutting is fairly flat, you shouldn't have any problems with it bottoming out while still getting the short cut you're looking for.
