No Nonsense, No Frills

Just looking for a great brush mower? The PREMIER is our lightest and most maneuverable DR Field and Brush Mower. Unlike its bigger brothers, the PREMIER is designed exclusively as a mower (it does not accept our optional attachments), which allowed us to take weight out of the frame...and that translates into easier, more responsive handling in the field.

With a 26” cutting width and three forward speeds (as well as powered reverse) the PREMIER has everything you need to churn through the thickest field grass and clear out overgrown brush—including saplings up to 2” in diameter. The OHV engine starts easily every time, and the big, lugged tires track reliably over all kinds of uneven terrain. This is one solid mower!

PREMIER Field and Brush Mower

Features

13.3 FPT DR OHV Engine

Our PREMIER model is powered by our own easy-starting, DR OHV engine with 13.3 foot-pounds of torque and 340cc displacement. It features a cast-iron cylinder sleeve and dual-element air filter. CARB certified.

Superior Mulching

Our decks are enclosed on 3 sides, so that cut material is chopped and re-chopped, reducing grass and brush to a fine mulch. This means less material is left behind in your field, and none of the windrows you get with side-discharging mowers.

Gear-Driven Transmission: Lock it in and Rip it up!

Unlike hydrostatic drives, the DR's geared transmission lets you lock in your ground speed, leaving your hands free to steer the machine across uneven terrain (instead of fussing with touchy throttle controls as you go). With 3 forward gears, you can choose a fixed pace that’s right for you.

Big, Lugged Tires for Sure Traction

These are big (16" x 4.75"), lugged tires that pull the PREMIER through or over just about anything, and they are sealant filled...which means they’re highly resistant to puncture. Tough as nails, apparently!

Custom-Made Blade Spindle

Made of 1.375" thick cast iron with oversized double sealed bearings, the blade spindle is integrated into the deck housing and reinforced for vibration-free performance. Designed to provide years of maintenance-free use (and abuse!).

Adjustable Handlebars

A comfortable working height is important, especially when traversing rough terrain.

Ergonomic Controls

Both on the control panel and on the grips, all DR Field and Brush Mowers controls are designed to optimize operator comfort and minimize hand fatigue. Everything you need is right at your fingertips, so there is no walking around the mower to make adjustments.

Heavy-Duty Powder Coating

Our frames and decks are finished with a tough, durable powder coating that resists scratching and promotes long life.

Fantastic brush mower!!

I am very pleased with this brush mower. I am 69 and this is my 4th brush mower and by far the best. I am used to Kohler and Briggs & Stratton engines, but I have to say that I am very impressed with the 13.3 fpt DR engine. This engine is robust and has plenty of power to self propel and mow. This machine mows through high grasses and shrubbery with no issues.I am quite happy with the mileage of this machine. I am used to refueling more often with my other machines. I am also very pleased with the toughness of the blade spindle. I am mowing a good portion of 11 acres which includes small trees and shrubbery and have unfortunately hit several stumps despite my best efforts not to. The mower continues on with no apparent vibration. My only suggestion is to take a look at easing the force necessary to engage and hold the blade engagement lever. I do consider this minor as I appreciate the inherent safety of the present design. In conclusion, I now look forward to mowing the brush!!

I purchased the DR Brush Mower after renting one and seeing that it was exactly what I needed. Performs as advertised. Starts very easily and it's assembly was also very straight forward. It would be nice if they had some way of alligning the pully cover, it is a little difficult to get the bolt in and find the threads.

I had the chance to use my new mower on my back acres that slope to my little creek. It was initially hard to handle on the angles until I got the hang of it. I will be practicing with it and am getting more comfortable. It has enough power and started right up without an issue. I was worried that I should have bought an electric start but after using it a few times I am comfortable with my purchase. I have a lot of land to clean up so I will be putting my mower through its paces. Thanks!

The mower does the job that I needed done. I have only one problem. After it has been running and I shut it off , several times it won’t start until I remove the spark plug, pull the starter rope several times, and replace the spark plug. Then it starts.
Response from DR SupportHello Donald, thank you for writing a review of your new Field and Brush Mower. We're glad to hear it's doing the job for you. But you shouldn't be experiencing the difficulty with starting after use. We recommend checking the oil dip stick to see if you can smell gas. If it smells like gas, the float in your carb may be stuck, tap carb bowl with a wrench then change the oil. If it doesn't, or if that doesn't fix the problem, please give us a call and we would be happy to troubleshoot with you to figure it out. Our Technical Department can be reached at 1-800-687-6575

Purchased this field and brush mower a couple months ago mainly to open up some new ATV/walking trails on our hunting land. Been very impressed thus far have roughly about 3-4 hours on it. The mower has been able to handle anything I've been able to throw at it. Our hunting land has an abundance of canary grass and this thing just mows right through it. Couple additional observations/comments: -I was shipped the wrong belt cover initially. Customer service was very helpful and had the correct belt cover out the very next day. -Assembly was very easy. Just a couple things to assemble, then add oil and gas. Mower started right up. -I've rented units that are twice the price, and this thing is just as good if not better. Really excited to tackle more projects on our land in the coming months!

More Than I Expected

Well, after ALOT of research on field and brush mowers, I went with this one due to the fact it had great reviews and was on sale. I had NO issues with assembly. It took less than a week to receive notification that it was ready to be picked up at a depot and everything came packaged perfectly. I have used it for around 6 hours to date and have been highly impressed. I'd actually say it performs better than I thought. I have some VERY thick grass/weeds that are around 4'-5' tall, which is supposed to be at it's max height, but it plows right through. I've stalled it 3 times but that was because I was going to fast through some thick brush. It chews everything up so well that their really isn't even mulch left afterwards. I am really impressed with the machine and am getting ready to drive it into the woods to let it clear me a path for my ATV. Not worried a bit about its ability to handle. I was nervous about hitting rocks, which I know there are some buried in the brush in the 8 acres of un-wooded property. I have hit them but it did not do any damage to the spindle or blade. Extremely impressed and would highly recommend.

My new favorite Beast
Posted by: Betty M. from Murfreesboro, TN on 07/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I’ve got nothing bad to say about this beast! At first after I put the couple pieces together once unloaded, my first thought was, my bad right shoulder is not going to be happy trying to start this. On the third pull it cranked right up! And then every time I went to restart it during the day, all it took was one pull! As the day went on, I learned what I could and shouldn’t do. There was hardly a “shouldn't do” the whole day. This beast ripped through my woods like it was hot butter! The only reason why I stopped was not because of my shoulder, but because I was getting overheated from the extremely hot day! I could have kept going with this! I was enjoying it! I have been wanting one for years and never could bring myself to buying it. Here recently, I bought 6 acres of land with a creek running through it. The sides of the creek look bad with overgrown small trees and weeds. The land I have been living on for the passed 14 years is wooded on all sides in the back yard and it’s slowly been creeping in on me. Hence the reason for wanting one! I broke down and finally bought it because I am going to retire on that 6 acres next year and I want to see my creek! I hate the fact that I waited so long to get it! But totally happy that I have it in my possession now! Just so you know who was handling this beast..... I’m mid 50s, weigh about 126lbs and I’m only 5’1”..... with a bad shoulder from my profession. I truly am happy with my newest toy for my land!

Better than Expected

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I received the mower without any issues and was able to put it together pretty quickly. Yesterday I got to try it out and it was nothing short of amazing. With all of the rain we've had this year, my property is completely overgrown with weeds and saplings. I was able to do about the first two acres and this machine is incredible. It turned everything into a very fine mulch and didn't leave any clumps or other unsightly debris. This isn't a toy though, it was hard work maneuvering among the many trees I've got, but I couldn't be happier with the results. It starts easy and runs great. The 2 speed is perfect for a comfortable pace and 1 speed helped with getting close around tree trunks. The added bonus is the reverse gear while still cutting. It may have been obvious, but I wasn't expecting it. I highly recommend this machine and am looking forward to seeing the final results after the next 5 or 6 acres.

A very capable brush mower. This is a very heavy machine, however, and the narrow rear drive tires struggle for traction. Wheels in front would help. Gear selection is less precise than my Craftsman snowblower, and 3rd gear is too high.

Very happy with this purchase works great on blackberry brambles
Posted by: Randal C. from RENTON, WA on 06/02/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I purchased this brush mower last fall to clear Himalayan blackberry, ivy, and other invasive species on acreage in the Northwest. This mower has made quick, easy work of it. The mower is heavy enough and the traction tires effective enough that this machine can crush entangled 7-foot high blackberry brambles under the deck where the blade has no issue chopping them into mulch. I drive it headlong in/on to the bramble, and let the mower do all the work. It can cut through mature English Ivy clumps two to three feet high as if they are not even there. Overall it makes clearing an overgrown lot feel like mowing a lawn-- fast and easy. I am very pleased with the machine's quality and design. It took me an hour or two to get it out of it's crate, assembled, and ready for use. It took some strength to start it the first few times I used it it took about 5 or 7 strong pulls, but it has gotten significantly easier after 5 to 10 hours of break-in. It starts easily with one or two pulls now that I have a little operating time on it. In summary I am a very satisfied customer and I recommend this Field and Brush Mower. This was my second DR Power purchase the first was their 9.5 chipper/shredder, and I've been so pleased with this company's products that I just ordered a pressure washer from them.

I've put about 12 hours on my new DR brush mower. Not too hard to assemble, directions are semi-clear. The only significant problem I encountered was the blade-engagement lever--TOO HARD TO SQUEEZE for more than 20 minutes. I don't need carpal tunnel syndrome from mowing. I fixed it by tying a strap to the brake and holding that with my plam, but that's definitely not UL Listed. Fix that please!

Cuts fine, won't shut off

The mower was easy to assemble, it took longer to uncrate it than it did to assemble. It cut as well as advertised, including 3 vines. My hands did get tired from holding the blade engagement and the traction engagement levers. The problem is that it would not shut off when I moved the throttle to the stop position. I was able to follow the cable and push the lever at the engine to make it shut off. I called and spoke to a very nice gentleman that said customer service was closed, but I could set up a call back and they would call back within 24 hours. That was 3 business days ago and I still have not received a call. I am sure it is a simple cable adjustment, but I should not have to do that on a new mower.

I borrowed a DR from a friend several years ago to clear my property so I already knew how well they worked. After struggling with weed whackers and trimmer mowers for the last few years, I purchased the entry level DR and am pleased with the performance. If a brush mower is all you need, this unit is a good buy.

Picked up my mower at Fed Ex. Got it home, uncrated it in the truck, and backed it down the ramps. All went well til it ran a couple of minutes. Gas poured out the carb, then into the cylinder. Had to pull the bowl off and with no fuel shutoff gas ran the whole time. Fixed the float, pulled plug ad drained the cylinder. Took it to my farm in E. Tx. and ran it about 3 hrs. Worked perfectly. Cut briars, weeds, saplings, and anything else in the way. A little hard to start, 8 to 10 pulls, but I can deal with that. I have several overgrown acres to clear and I think this is going to be the perfect tool.

I followed the easy instructions for the handle assembly, added gas and oil and started immediately. My target consists of dense woody intertwined vines, mixed with wild rose, blackberry and barbary. Due to the nature of the material I have to cut it takes a lot of back and forth but this mower is taking it. I'm very pleased and impressed.

Posted by: Nicholas M. from Kathleen, GA on 04/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I had two concerns when I ordered this mower first, DR considered this a light duty mower, and didn't even show a horsepower rating on the engine, and second, would I be able to handle it I am 70. What I found is that this brush cutter easily crunches through anything less than 2 inches diameter, and I can easily maneuver it in 20 minute spells without tearing it or myself up. The only quibble that I have with it is the reverse gearing, which is somewhat taller than it needs to be. On uneven ground or ground with a lot of sappling stumps, you must reduce the engine speed. If you don't, you will back up in a series of lurches as the mower out-paces you and you have to release the clutch. Other than that, I am delighted with this machine.

Used my mower for the first time today about a hour totalmower works great. My problem is with the traction control handle. It broke almost even with top of handle bar. Now it is going to take at least 2 weeks to get new one that is going to cost almost 30 bucks not counting shipping which is 12 dollars for something I could send overnight thru the post office for around 5. I am waiting for a response from customer support on the matter. Also the blade engagement handle is very hard to hold in engage position. giving it 2 stars for now waiting out come of my note to customer support

Nice, but it won't start

My brand new brush mower arrived in perfect condition - except for one fault: It won't start Following troubleshooting instructions and using every trick in the book, I found that the mower simply would not start after over 50 shoulder-wrenching pulls on the starter cord. Oil, gas and settings fine, but no start. The only upside was the excellent customer service over the phone to arrange repair. Overall, however, I am NOT a happy camper How about a little quality control from the factory.

Assemble was quick and easy. Starting it the first time was a work out, it's not an easy pull and took awhile to gas to engine. Since then it's been starting on the 1st or 2nd pull each time.It cuts anything that it can push over, 1.5 Tulip trees are the biggest I've tried. The speed shift lever is more imprecise than I'd like, but speed choices are good, speed 1 in heavy brush, 2 for easier going a slow walk 3 to get it from place to place a fast walk The bigger tires on the pricier models would be nice, as occasionally, one tire will get hung-up or stuck and just spin. I use it for about 2 - 3 fairly hilly, acres of heavily overgrown woods at back of my property. This cleared it out nicely. It's done everything I needed it to do, and at this price, I don't think you can beat it.

Skeptical at first...
Posted by: Denise S. from Hickory, NC on 03/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I say skeptical and gave 4 stars because when we received our mower, the first time turning it on the gas was spewing out the bowl And the break for the blade engagement wasn't working properly. But after a phone call to Customer Service, the issues were quickly resolved by my husband evidently shipping will jostle things. I then got to take it out for a spin WOW Totally love this machine Easy to use, takes small hills quite easily. Cut through most anything I needed it to. My only complaint is the handle grips - after holding on to the machine for a few hours I think I ran it for about 3 my left hand was pretty sore from holding on to the blade engagement handle. So I may invest in some padding for my gloves. Other than that - I plan to give this machine a good workout in the back field in the coming weeks. It cut through brambles and honeysuckle vine quite easily as well as small trees. So far this was a good investment BTW ran for a little over 3 hours on a tank of gas

Bought my DR to help clear brush, small saplings and heavy briars in terrain I can't operate a tractor safety. Couldn't be happier with the results. Clears cleanly with a minimum of debris. Easy to operate with clear instructions. Started easily the first time out of the box. Was disappointed with customer service. Manufacture was delayed twice and I wasn't informed. "Heck of a way to run a railroad." I had to call them to get updates. Equipment 5 stars. Customer service 2 only. Would be lower, but folks are very pleasant.

What a huge disappointment! Bought a lemon
Posted by: Jon K. from Chesterfield, MO on 10/22/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 1.00 star rating
I bought the DR based on the company's reputation. I bought it new and preassembled from Western Lawn Equipment in O'fallon Mo. Within the first hour the machine quit driving because the left wheel came off. The wheel drive key came out and the wheel slid off the axle. I used an allen wrench as a bush fix and restored the drive. About 3 hours in, on a flat surface with short grass and the mower disengaged, the machine suddenly died. I have not been able to start it since then. I checked the system and the fuel flows (yes the gas is new) but the engine does not seem to spark. One additional annoyance is the the belt cover is completely melted under the muffler. Since this is under warranty, I expect this to be fixed free of charge. I will re-review at a later date if one is warranted.

I have about 8 hours of work on the machine and it has exceeded my expectations. It is a great tool if you want to be selective on bush hog type work, or need to work in areas thick with larger trees, but need to clear out under growth for trails or what ever. Easy pull start, so far, no more than two pulls to crank engine. Plenty of power for my needs, has not bogged down or anything. Cutting 2 ft field grass, 2" saplings, and lots of brier patches. Thanks DR for a great product!

This is an easy to start, light and maneuverable unit with enough power to cut down 1"-2" saplings with ease. This is the type of mower that you use around the edge of your lawn, in the rough stuff you wouldn't dare take your lawn mower. You won't mind hitting small stumps, sticks, rocks, etc. with it. The design is simple so there's little to worry about, just replacing the belt and blade every so often. This is a great addition to an already strong lineup!

Mows better than I expected...actually clears as it mows, which my old F&B mower did not, leaving small varmints and rodents no place to hide. Starts and handles easily with controls being very easy to access. It's a bit jerky on take off in 2nd and 3rd gears, I think an infinite speed control and a reverse rather than 3 forward speeds would give better, smoother control. Overall, however, I'm very pleased.

I rated 4 star rather than 5 due to shipping damage. Box torn loose from pallet and handle bars broke through and rubbed threw handle grips. The freight company was nice enough to shrink wrap the entire thing about 20 times around or it would have been returned. It could never have held up to the drive home. Had the same issue with my chipper and that box blew out of the truck in spite of two sets of tie downs. These cheap cardboard boxes are totally inadequate for a cross country trip.

I use my DR Field & Brush mower for areas of my farm that need cutting 2-3 times per season. I also use it to keep some walking/hiking trails clear from the reoccurence of hardwood trees, etc. I use the snow throwing attachment to very effectively clear snow during the Winter.....works great. The only issue I have with the mower is the difficulty in using it on some of the sloped areas of my farmstead that need mowing....the mower is much better suited for flat terrain. THat is why I would love to have a DR trimmer mower for these areas. I would greatly benefit from such a machine. Thanks for the great equipment.

Our mt. bike club had a heck of a time finding a high quality brush cutter nimble enough to handle the robust trimming necessary to clear corridors for trail construction and clear alongside already constructed singetrack trails. The "smallest" brush trimmer is powerful enough to do the cutting we need and light enough to minimize impact on the sensitive slope on which it is used, it is also more manageable for the operator compared to heavier machine options. The only drawbacks we have found are the flaired out handles, which can bang your knuckles into trees when passing close or turning suddenly, the machine is pretty loud (ear protection a must).

We have had this mower for YEARS

We have used this mower for years. We keep the woods mowed. We have property in the mountains and have used it hard. We never have had trouble with it as we do EVERYTHING else. I can't say enough good things about it. It always starts. The only thing is our hand begins to cramp after awhile because you have to hold that lever down and managing to go around trees, brush and we aren't big people.and are going to be 70 and 75 this year. Thanks, DR Trimmer for this wonderful machine.

DR field and brush mower

I had property along the Susquehanna River in upstate New York. In early Spring, the weeds, small trees, grass would take over. The was also a steep bank going down to the river. My DR went through all the overgrowth without a problem. I am a senior lady - 5'4" and was able to handle the machine very easily - no problem. It was also easy for me to add the curtting cord and - really important - to be able to start the machine. It was constructed very well and never broke down - very dependable. I loved my DR.

The DR brush mower is a machine that performs. Like other DR products you can rest assured that you will be satisfied. Service is remarkable. We also have a DR trimmer which we are also happy with. Why would anyone want to have a hand held trimmer when you can have a DR.

I use my mower to clear the woods at my hunting club, have paths to ride the four wheelers and make shooting lanes. I also use it around the house to clear the woods in the branch on the edge of my property. Please consider having your line of products at the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie, Ga in October of this year. Your products are as nice or better than what they have on display. It would give you good exposure to thousands of people.

OUTSTANDING PRODUCT!!! I would not hesitate to purchase another DR product. My mower has performed exactly as advertised, is dependable and a pleasure to use. The only thing that would make this a better product is if the kill switch wiring were better shielded(tends to snag on branches and other objects and become disconnected making the mower imposible to shut off with the key)

The DR mower is a great multi-tasker. It cuts through tall grass, saplings, and blackberry bushes like a pro. It does the job of multiple machines. It was my first larger machine investment when I purchased almost 7 acres four years ago. Our new house is near completion and I am now awaiting delivery of a DR Power Wagon to help with landscaping. That's how much I like DR products!

Q.I need to transport this to my remote rural land and back again, so I need to get it up into my pickup truck (Tacoma with 6 foot bed and a cap). Is it a problem to self propel it up a ramp (probably 2x12 boards) into the truck? At the very least, the blades must not spin while it self propels.
A.Thank you for contacting us.

Yes, the DR Field and Brush Mowers can be driven up the ramps with ease without the blade spinning. You also have total control of the speed. It is very easy to do.

Please contact us if you have further questions.

Q.How about using this to cut the lawn on a steep slope? Regular lawn mowers just don't hold up on my property.
A.We do not recommend using any of our equipment on slopes steeper than 20 degrees. This is to ensure safety of the operator as well as adequate lubrication for the engine. Our Field and Brush mowers are very capable of mowing on rough, uneven terrain as long as the vegetation is within the mowers cutting capacity. They are very durable machines. Thank you for your inquiry. fc

Q.How easy is it to remove and sharpen the blades?
Our ground is quite rocky, and at a 3.5" cutting height I will be hitting a LOT of rocks.
A.Removing and sharpening a blade on our walk behind field and brush mowers very similar to a standard lawn mower. You can use a block of wood to keep the blade from rotating and use an impact wrench or breaker bar to remove the blade nut and take the blade off. The blade will be sharpened the same way as a standard lawn mower blade with the exception that the brush blade is larger than a standard mower blade. You will want to ensure that the blade is properly balanced after sharpening because if it is not balanced, you will wear out the spindle bearings excessively fast. For further assistance, please contact our Technical Support department toll-free at 1-(888) 550-0062. We will be happy to assist you and look forward to hearing from you.

Q.We have areas that have gopher mounds and rocks hidden in the heavy weeds and brush. Will the Premier model work in these conditions?
I have a pre 2000 DR trimmer mower and it really is a good machine. I need something bigger and heavier. A tractor and turning area make it hard to maneuver in smaller areas or closer to fences. I am really interested in the Premier Model Field and Brush Mower We live in a high desert and gophers, ground squirrels, and badgers make dirt mounds that are hidden. Some areas are rocky, not boulders, but you wouldn't want to hit them with a lawn mower. The DR works until the weed load is to heavy, and it really is too much area for my machine.
A.If you have an acre or less, the premier model is ideal for cutting 4 ft high grass, 8 ft high weeds and saplings up to 2" in diameter. It has a 3.5" fixed cutting height and a 26" cutting width. However, it does not have the pivoting deck as our larger mowers. The larger mower's brush deck pivots from side to side and follows the contours of the ground. This minimizes scalping and improves traction on uneven terrrain. You may want to consider the next model up from the premier model.

Q.Would this machine work for maintaining grass on rural gravel roads or would it pick the gravel up causing damage to the blade and the user?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The DR Field and Brush Mower has a fixed mowing height of 3.5 inches above the ground. If there is a center hump on the road, that may be an issue, depending on how tall it is. It will also depend on how loose the gravel is.

We recommend that you give us a call at 1-800-376-9637 and discuss your needs with one of our sales reps who will be able to help you determine if it is the right machine for your needs.

Q.Will this mower be adequate to mow brush on the back side of 6-strand high-tensile electric fence? The brush/shrubs grow very fast behind the fence and I can't keep up with it with hand held brush cutters. We need to keep at least a 2 to 3 ft clear swath on the back side of fence to keep the fence charged at the maximum to keep livestock in and predators out.
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The Premier Field and Brush Mower will handle up to 4 ft high grass, 8 ft tall weeds and brush and up to 2 inch thick saplings. It has 3 forward gears and 1 reverse with a feather touch control that allows you total control of the speed of the mower.

Q.what angle of hill (grade) is it safe to use the field and brush mower mowing across
A.We do not recommend using any of our machines on a slope steeper then 20 degrees. This is for safety reasons as well as keeping the machines engine adequately lubricated. Anything less than 20 degrees will work just fine.
