Overview

Widest Cut Available and Maximum Power!

Our PRO MAX-34 model gives you the widest mowing deck we've ever offered on a walk-behind brush mower. The extra width puts the machine's cut path well outside of its wheelbase, allowing you to easily mow right up next to fence lines, out buildings, trees, and other obstacles.

This is the widest, fastest, easiest-to-use (with Power Steering, of course) brush mower we have ever offered, coupled with our top-of-the-line 20HP V-Twin engine. It is perfect for you if you simply want to get the job done as quickly and as easily as possible.

PRO MAX-34

Features

Power Steering (:41)

Power Steering is Easy on You!

Our disc brake system provides Power Steering. Each wheel is equipped with its own brake, operated by a hand lever. Just squeeze the brake on one side, and the mower will pivot easily around that wheel. You’re in control...without wrestling the machine!

20 HP Briggs Twin-Cylinder Professional Series Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the obvious choice for our Walk-Behind Field and Brush Mowers. The PRO MAX-34 20 HP model features a Briggs Professional Series OHV twin-cylinder engine, with full-pressure oil pump (great for positive lubrication even on side slopes), a spin-off oil filter, 650 cc of displacement, (two) cast-iron cylinder sleeves, plus easy, turn-key electric-starting.

34" Super-Wide Pivoting Deck

The 34" deck on the PRO MAX our widest cut walk-behind brush cutter. And unlike the rigid, fixed decks found on some mowers, the DR deck pivots from side to side, allowing it to follow the contours of rough terrain. This feature minimizes scalping and improves traction.

Side Discharge

The PRO MAX is equipped with right side discharge to efficiently clear out the large amount of material that accumulates under the extra wide mowing deck.

Gear-Driven Transmission: Lock it in and Rip it up!

Unlike hydrostatic drives, the DR's geared transmission lets you lock in your ground speed, leaving your hands free to steer the machine across uneven terrain (instead of fussing with touchy throttle controls as you go). With 3 forward gears, you can choose a fixed pace that’s right for you.

Big, Lugged Tires for Sure Traction

No other brush mower has tires like this. They’re the biggest (18" x 6.5" x 8"), they have superior lugged treads that pull the mower through or over just about anything, and they are sealant filled...which means they’re highly resistant to puncture. Tough as nails, apparently!

Custom-Made Blade Spindle

Made of 1.375" thick cast iron with oversized double sealed bearings, the blade spindle is integrated into the deck housing and reinforced for vibration-free performance. Designed to provide years of maintenance-free use (and abuse!).

Commercial Grade Electric Clutch

Our industry-leading, self-adjusting clutch is designed for easy access and quick swapping out of optional attachments. After 245 hours of testing we only used up 10% of the life of the clutch. There are no cables to stretch or idler pulleys to get out of adjustment.

Attachments Add 4-Season Versatility

Thanks to our quick-change coupling system, the DR’s brush mowing deck can be swapped—in just minutes—with one of our optional PTO attachments: a 42" finish mower, a 30" snow thrower, a wood chipper, or a 42" grader blade. It's like owning 5 machines in one!

Built to Take a Beating

Field and brush mowing is a bruising business, and underbuilt mowers don’t survive long out where the tough stuff grows. We frame our machines with heavy-duty, laser cut steel, and reinforce key stress spots so you get a product that will withstand years of use and abuse.

Adjustable Handlebars

A comfortable working height is important, especially when traversing rough terrain.

Ergonomic Controls

Both on the control panel and on the grips, all DR Field and Brush Mowers controls are designed to optimize operator comfort and minimize hand fatigue. Everything you need is right at your fingertips, so there is no walking around the mower to make adjustments.

Heavy-Duty Powder Coating

Our frames and decks are finished with a tough, durable powder coating that resists scratching and promotes long life.

Easy steering, minor throttle issues
Posted by: Alan P. from ZIONVILLE, NC on 11/06/2018

The power steering option makes this mower a breeze to turn, much easier than other models. with differential locked. My only compliant is the rpm's seems to decrease after a few minutes run time. I think maybe the vibration causes the throttle to back off. It's just having to adjust the throttle every few minutes. Mows great with plenty of power and i like the 34 deck. I think a maintenance meter should come standard on this model, after all, is is a top of the line mower. Paying 50.00 for one of these is a little steep after paying 3,600 for the mower. Great product so far.

Very easy to use. Performs well. Used it to clear pastures for cattle that were overgrown with brush and saplings. Wife uses it with no issues. She would prefer a speed between 1 and 2. Only issue I've had is the right brake quit working. It was easily fixed once I discovered some of the limbs I ran over had pulled the cable loose. Easily tightened with a T-handle Allen wrench. Check the oil every time you use it. Haven't ran out but it does seem to need a little oil every time it is used. I would recommend this to anyone.

I have a heart condition and my doctor said that I should get some exercise and with. this machine it’s my twenty HP. Walker as it takes me to my brush HOG job which is over one half mile away. Third.gear is a fast walk and then the machine goes to work. It not only cleaned up my property but it also got me back in shape. It’s a machine that does more than it was made for.

Check over your mower when delivered had some loose bolts etc no big deal. My wife can actually run this mower and does she has more time on it than I do!

Great improvement since 2005 when I got my 1st Dr. I liked the 2005 motor. Will have to see how it works. I have had mixed reviews with Briges and Stratton’s in the past. I truly love the Big DRs, used my last one for 13 years. I use it to mow places my 8ft bush hog can not get to.

Powerful. Almost too powerful I think for anyone under 160lbs. I’m 200 lbs Made quick work of heavy tall weeds, saplings and dense 1 inch bush clusters. Very solid. High quality. No issues on how solidly it is built Wish it had a gear between 1 crawl and 2 pretty quick. Gear 3 is plain fast and leaps forward Treat this beast with respect.

It's a beast! I've been using it to plow through blackberries and brush on our 5 acres. It works as advertised and really fit my needs! I bought locally because I needed it ASAP. I didn't give it 5 stars for the following reasons: 1 The brake cables have failed / frayed inside the plastic covering. 2 The blade does well with brush 1 or maybe 1.5 - nothing over that. 3 The blade belt routinely comes off. Go thru too thick of stuff, hit a branch bigger than 1.5, or a rock - belt is off. Over rough terrain, I've had to fix the belt a dozen times in as many minutes. 4 There is extensive clutch break-in required and its not ever mentioned pre purchase. 5 There is a brake break-in required.

superb mower. bought to clear overgrown pasture and for use as rough cut lawn mower. perfect compliment to tractor mounted brush hog. started with the dr premier 26 which is a great, lightweight fixed deck machine, but traded up for several reasons. the premier 26 is splash lubricated and starves for oil on steep hills. i didn't like holding it level on slopes to get oil where it needed to be. also, the smaller mower would lose traction going over small down wood. the heavier 34 machine with independent brakes does a better job handling rough terrain. i do miss the premier though. it's a very nice light weight machine. the 34 handles 8 foot clumps of multiflora rose/glossy buckthorn, but it takes some work. some reviewers have noted that the machine rides up brush like this and it will, but if you let it ride up and then lift the handles to push the deck down, you make progress. you only need to do this in the most difficult brush. most of the time the machine cruises through whatever is in front of it. about 1/3 of my pasture is pretty soft - reeds canary grass, ferns and such. the big tractor with brush hog cuts into the sod too easily. one of the biggest advantages of the dr mower is its ability to float on soft ground without cutting into the sod. unless there is standing water, this machine floats beautifully. the 34 cut is big enough so you can make progress. there is a competitive machine out there with a very nice hydro transmission, but its little 24 cut is a deal breaker for me. i use the blade to scrape manure in the barnyard. it works very well for this, but the pins that adjust shoe height are a little lame. could use improvement there. my neighbor has the snowthrower attachment which he parks all winter. i tried it and found out why. it's single stage. it works fine as long as the throat is full, but in light snow it will blow air instead of snow. in theory you should be able to find a ground speed to keep the auger working, but unless the snow is deep enough, a lot of the time discharge is about 4 feet. when the throat is full, this attachment does work well, but i would prefer to pay for an attachment that works in all conditions - to me, that means 2 stage. the transmission is good - not as good as a hydro, but the shift lever is well positioned and shifting is pretty slick. there has been some mention of difficulty finding 2nd in reviews here. the pattern is closely spaced, going from R,N,1,2,3. until i got the feel for the machine, to find 2nd, i would throw the shifter all the way forward to 3rd and bump it back one. this worked well - maybe a little easier to keep track when shifting from reverse. but once you have the feel for the machine, shifting is pretty easy. have yet to find a use for 3 though, unless i want to take my mower for a run. after replacing the spoked knob on the belt cover a couple of times now, i'm about to try a round knob. maybe it will be less likely to catch brush and loosen in the field. waiting for a nice deal on the 42 finish mower and maybe even the little chipper attachment. with the generous return policy, its very nice to feel confident that such a large purchase will really work for you and have recourse if it isn't. it's also great to have one versatile power plant rather than a million small engines around.

Used for a year now clearing my overgrown 40 acres - the thing I like best is that I can load into my pickup and don't need a trailer to transport. I use the DR pro max 34 to clear the land and my Ferris 3000 to maintain what I have cleared. It's working well and allows me to get the job done without a big tractor to transport or leave there and risk being stolen since we do not live on the property.

I love my brush cutter, it is powerful and gets a lot work done. It does take some muscle to handle heavy cutting and it is taxing when used for long spans of time. Don’t buy this machine thinking it’s a magic wand. It is a hard working machine that is well matched by a hard working operator.

Disappointed with customer service.
Posted by: VALENTIN T. from BRISTOL, TN on 04/12/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I received my DR PRO MAX 34 APPROX 3 weeks ago. It was shipped in a open wood crate. No keys, no installation instructions, no owners manual. I've called customer service at least 4 times. To this date the only thing I received was a key. Hence the machine is sitting in my basement, unassembled and collecting dust. You would think your company would have overnighted the manual and instructions. I'm debating sending this machine back if this is how your company operates. Very disappointed. I've read so many good reviews about this machine but now I'm doubtful about the validity of some of those reviews based on my personal experience.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to write us in regards to this. We truly appreciate you taking the time. This certainly isn't our practice. We want to know about any quality control issues that may be occurring. I double checked your records and it looks like everything has made its way out to you, if this is not the case, please let us know so we can help make it right.

Again, thank you for letting us know and we hope we've done everything we can to rectify the issue.

very 25 hours or sooner, pull machine apart and replace tranny belt!
Posted by: DOUGLAS K. from NORTH SAN JUAN, CA on 01/15/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
I have used Dr's, the top of the line machines since about the year 2000. The early ones had chain issues. The next model prior to this one worked well, but had spindle issues. (Issues = replace or fix.) This one replaces the chain drive with a belt. The belt is well hidden and protected deep inside the machine. To get at the belt, you pretty much have to have what a good shop has, a way to get under the machine, an impact wrench to remove the clutch assembly, and the removal of the wheel on one side, in order to hold the driveshaft and remove the clutch assembly. The first time it happened, I took it in, under warrantee, not expecting a failure in the first 25 hours. The second time it failed I took it in again, and this time it was m fault, and I was informed for the first time that the changing of said belt was expected every 25 hours, and by the owner. The third time happened sooner than expected, and my own hoist and jig was not ready, so into the shop again. Just got it back. Ran fine first hour. Could barely move at start of 2nd hour, then got somewhat better, but barely move is a sign of impending belt failure. I think the tranny is way sticky and sluggish, and is wrecking belts. Waiting to see what DR has to say on Tuesday, Jan 16, 2018. This is way more maintenance than I bargained for. Other than this, it ripped brush better than any previous model, the spindle is way Huge-er, as it the blade.

Nice weed whipper?

I had high hopes this would really be a Godzilla eat anything machine. I had my eye on our ~8' high thicket of wild berry bushes and all it could do is climb the wall of brush. Maybe I am using the wrong machine or expecting too much for this type of job but I'd like to cut the front edge of the deck back about 6" and give it some real teeth! Back to the hedge trimmer. I'll try it some more this Spring it's not too late to return it but so far it makes a good but cumbersome weed-whipper

This beast has been taming East Texas for almost a year now. I have managed to break the pulley weld which put some serious extra wear and tear on the spindle. However, I replaced the pulley, bought an extra spindle, and will continue attacking the wild until I break something else. This was absolutely the right machine to cut into the wild. Customer Service gave me a new pulley and belt. I plan to do my best to wear these out in the next 12 months. The price of replacement parts is totally reasonable when you consider the about of work this machine has done.

Was very excited to get going with my new DR...followed instructions, had it out mowing for a little over an hour when it got stuck in gear in the back 40 due to the plastic clip on one of the shift cables breaking. DR did send out a new cable, it has been replaced but the machine is still very hard to shift most of the time, even after adjusting the cable as directed to do so in the instructions. I will be contacting DR to find out what else might need attention.

I still own one of the original DR Field and Brush mowers that I inherited from my parents. I'm 64 now and while it was a superstar in its day,(22" cut, wire spoke wheels, no reverse, would cut anything in front of it), it was quite a workout to use. I just got my new Pro-Max-34 20.0 HP Electric start Field and Brush Mower, used it today for the first time. Wow! It just thrilled me because it did all the work for me! No more hauling it around to turn, having yo physically pull it backward to reverse! I love the safety features and a full 12 inches wider cut! But my favorite gear is reverse! I am in awe! Can't wait to use it tomorrow!

I have used my brush mower once so far. I cut about two football fields of four foot high weeds and grass with 1 inch saplings. The mower performed just as advertised. Power steering mad turning the mower much easier than the ones without it. The reason for 4 stars and not five is because I have some concerns about some of the cables that are not protected as well as on some other models I have used. So it is a wait and see on that topic that may not be an issue. I can say the operation of the machines was a more pleasant experience than the other models I have used.

change chord trimmer to blade

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
This is my second year of using the Brush Hog. Used the chord trimmer to keep weeds under control on my evergreen trees. This year I needed to put the blade on for some deer trails, but not familiar with the requirement to use an impact wrench. I had a friend that let me use his battery cordless impact wrench, and had the blade on in just a couple minutes. This is one fantastic machine but I would like to see a few changes. #1 get the exhaust re located away from the operator. 2. make the gear shift positive - so you can feel what gear you are using. 3. the machine is often tipped to change chord or examine the blade. The hand grips should have a heavy end tip, to let the machine rest on - while you have it tipped back. I do like the way the machine is balanced so changing trim chord or the blade is easy. Only complaint with DR - I made a E mail request for info on ordering more of the heavy duty chord for the trimmer....Never had an answer from DR.

I have a ranch in Uvalde, Texas and have been searching for a machine I can use around blinds, feeders, fencelines, and all mechanical areas that are too small for a bush hog. This machine is incredible. It mulches high grass, brush, and even goes right through small, thorny cactus. A dream come true to keep my ranch tidy. Very powerful. Starts on a dime.

Bought the PRO XL-30 20 HP brush mower last November to cut and maintain trails on our 300+ acre hunting camp in northern Minnesota. It will cut anything that it can push over. 2" brush is not a problem for this machine. I have cut trails through swampy areas that were extremely rough/uneven and wet. The Pro XL crawled through it all! We have made trails in areas that in the past we used to avoid hunting because it was a nightmare to get to. Now we can sneak in and out of those areas quietly which has greatly increased the area of our property that can be hunted effectively. My only regret is that I didn't buy one of these years ago!

. well it works like a heavy weight champ . we did five food plots and they turn out real nice glad I bought it instead of rent the goat that will wear you out. There is only three complaints I have with it . you spend $3500 you think it would have a hour meter like it does in the video . that is disappointing . the second thing is the use of zip ty which a limb can rip off . the most annoying thing is the wire clip at the bottom and it wont start without it hookup and the steering brake need to be adjusted but you really don't need them. over all the orange machine will make your day a lot easier if you don't have or can't get a tractor where you need it .thanks L.K.Scarborough p.s you really need to make it clear about the hour meter . guess I am going to have to order one ( more money )

The machine is worth the money. For the weight it is extremely easy to use. I also purchased the snow thrower, but fortunately have not had to use it yet. I did make certain I could hook it up. The neutral safety switch was broken upon delivery, but owing to the quality of DR the part was inthe mail that same day. Fantastic company with fantastic service selling top of the line equipment. The only recommendation would be to make a shield for the rear of the machine to protect it when backing up.

A name given by friends and family that has seen it in action. I must say I was a little skeptical about purchasing at first but glad I did. I have had it for 18 months now and never have had a problem with it and must say I have given it a fair trial clearing land at my Virginia home place which was covered with everything this machine is suppose to handle. This machine will do everything it is advertised to do. The new power steering I see would be a plus in handling because my version does not have it. I would recommend this machine to anyone who is looking for a very well built hard working mower. Two thumbs up for DR.

This machine is just incredible what it can cut and how it cuts is unbelievable. With the 20hp their is no shortage of horse power. We use it to cut and maintain trails( for dirt bikes). Cutting thru 8' tall weeds is nothing and small pine saplings 2"-4" don't even know you hit them it just grinds them up. And the motor does not even bog down at all. We used to rent machines built by billy goat but they don't even compare to the dr. Make sure you buy the hour meter that dr sells its a perfect fit in the control console. We have almost 30 hours on our machine and not a single problem also buy the maintenance kit a great value for what you get. We use the plow blade to smooth berms in our trails. What used to be hard labor no is a breeze the fine pushed up Loam is nothing for this machine to handle. Areas to improve: 1. The blade pin to swivel is a pain to put the clip back on, I would like to see a push button pin on this unit. 2. A way to adjust the height of the cut for a shorter finished product. All in all this machine as the title states is a BEAST and a great value for the money. It has saved hundreds of man hours and made our work a lot easier.

I was VERY impressed with the saplings it would chew through. A 5" stump, barely high enough to get hit, was chewed to bits before the mower could be lifted. I used in the piney woods of east Texas where there a lot of sweetgum trees. These presented no problems. No for the con's It is supposed to handle a 3" tree, I don't see how it could push it over to cut it. Mine had trouble pushing a 2" tree over to cut it. When I got into a some heavy briars and french mulberrys they managed to remove the oil filler cap. Next thing I know it is smoking like a chimney and oil is everywhere. I caught it quickly so very little oil was lost. I started mowing some rye grass, about knee high, at @ 7AM. Still very wet with dew. Since there is not discharge for the grass it loaded that 20HP engine up pretty heavy. I had to cut only half a swath. But I didn't buy it to mow grass, so that's ok and there was probably a gallon of water every square yard :) I would suggest spending some time mowing something easy to get used to it. I started in some very thick stuff and caught myself trying to manhandle it and it kicked my butt!!

I had been looking for a while at the Field & Brush Mower and finally decided to purchase one-the PRO XL-30 20HP with electric start. I'm glad I did!! I have a small farm (mostly wooded) with about 3-acres in field and lawn around our house. The DR was shipped free to a local depot approx. 45 miles from my house due to turn around issues for the tractor trailer at home. My brother and I picked it up with no issues. It was easy to un-crate and put together... started right up after filling w/oil and gas. After reading the manual, I used it to mow my lawn (1-acre) around my house. Due to the lack of rain, I had let the yard grow up, and the DR had no trouble mowing the tall grass.I was pleased at how good the grass looked even though the cutting height is fixed at 3.5". I'm planning to purchase the mowing deck next spring. The unit is well made, solid construction and well powered with the 20HP engine. I haven't used the DR in any tall overgrown areas yet-waiting for the cooler weather. I would highly recommend the small land owner purchasing this unit. I'm very pleased with the ease of purchasing and the quality of the DR. It comes with a 2-year warranty, but I also purchased the extended 3-year warranty. Not many companies will do this. This tells me how confident they are in their product!

Impressive machine!

This machine is almost unstoppable. Incredible time savings over brush cutting attachments for a weedeater. I'd rate this a 4.5 if I could, but it wasn't an option. The only shortcoming on this product is when running in reverse you expose the "soft-underbelly" on the machine. I've had 2 warranty claims as a result of exposed parts being damaged when backing up the machine in difficult terrain. I was thoroughly impressed that DR readily stepped up to the plate and repaired/replaced the damaged parts NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! There are 2 modifications I'd like to see in the product to improve functionality: - heavy rubber backing across the entire back of the deck. I find the machine get's hung up on stumps that the blade cuts, but aren't low enough to clear the deck. - a skid plate covering the back end of the machine. I think this addition will prevent the warranty claims I had (not sure if DR has seen this from other customers too). This machine is POWERFUL and capable of clearing almost anything. At 230 lbs this machine PULLS ME in 3rd gear. Watch what you are clearing - if the blade can't cut the brush/stump it DOES have the power to rip the machine clean out of your hands (kill switch works great, FYI).

Rough country mowing made easy
Posted by: David N. from KALAMA, WA on 08/07/2016
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
When I ordered our DR, a Pro-XL 30 with the 20 hp Briggs engine, I opted to pick the machine up at the freight yard. They did an excellent job of loading the crate into my pickup truck, all 400 plus pounds of it. The crate was of the minimalist variety but sufficient to protect the unit in transit. Instructions for assembly were simple enough and once that was done I found the instructions for un-crating the unit.??My general comment when describing our property is that it is rough country, a 20+ acre timber lot with 6 to 7 year old Doug firs and years of blackberry and brambles. The mower will be used for clearing around the house and cutting trails where possible on the remainder of the property. We have very little smooth open terrain so I knew mowing would be a challenge. It has been.? The approximately 20 hours time on our DR is plenty for an initial reaction/review. That reaction is very positive with some caveats. It is a heavy duty machine that appears to be well engineered and very solidly built. Initial setup is well covered in the literature. After a few short flat land runs to familiarize myself with the controls I was off mowing. When I engaged the blade for the first time it was evident this was a solid unit and when taking on 2 to 3 foot high grasses and berry bushes that can easily run well over 6 feet tall I immediately noticed there was no perceptible change in the sound of the machine. It went through the brush like it wasn’t there, leaving a good mulch behind. Running up on a 2+ inch alder sapling produces some chatter from the deck but does not slow anything down. ??The property is rough enough that first gear is going to be about all that’s allowed for most of the work. And mowing with this unit on this land is not like mowing a suburban lawn. It is exhausting work requiring much muscle and perspiration. Fortunately the gearing seems to work very easily so backing out of the holes and gullies is somewhat easier than pulling it out. Bottom line at this point is that using the machine is something I actually look forward to. We are still taking it in small pieces, a couple hours at a time and are extremely pleased with the equipment and the results.

Pro XL -30 Brush Mower/string trimmer
Posted by: JOHN J. from MILACA, MN on 06/03/2016
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I had the line trimmer installed at time of purchase.First use was on thick weeds that were four feet high. Only used the first gear, and it took the weeds down without any effort. I was impressed with how easy the machine will steer, and the 20 hp engine is quiet. Shifting gears leaves a little guess work. The shift lever is well marked, but no detent to let you know what gear you have selected. Cutting the line for replacement will require a heavy duty diagonal cutter or pliers with that function. I found if you cut one end of the line at an angle - it will be easier to thread thru trimmer head. I also keep a slot screw driver handy as you may need it to pry the line loose as you replace it. Line is thick and seldom breaks unless you hit rocks or stump. This self propelled mower went over my rough terrain easily. May be the best product on the market.

We recently bought a home on 1 1/2 acres of overgrown brush, grass, saplings and TONS of berry bushes everywhere! We had several people come look at give us quotes to clean it all up. Several people wouldn't even give us a quote because they didn't want to do the work and others were so high it was comical. One company gave us a quote of 13k!! So I resorted to researching online for brush mowers. I remember DR Field and Brush mower from television commercials and there were so many excellent reviews. So here is our take: This machine is "Bad A$$" It did everything it advertised and more! Thick tall berry bushes? No problem Tall grass? Piece of cake Saplings? Destroyed them! Cons.... 1. There really isn't much of any... But here are a few suggestions . Wish there was some sort of guard that protects your hands from the brush and bushes when you are steering the machine. 2. Working in loose soil or hills could be a little tricky as it can be difficult to get some traction 3. And don't really understand the need for a third gear. It is very fast and if you used it you would almost be running :) All and all we are extremely happy with this machine! Although it is a little pricey it is well worth every penny!! Would definitely recommend to anyone

I am very happy with the way this machine has made my work unbelievably successful. Nothing has stopped my clearing of brush, briars, and sapling trees with this Field and Brush mower. The 30 inch deck was the right choice, since going between close growing pines has been my objective. The power steering has been more valuable than I thought it would be! Backing out of trouble has also been valuable. The gear shift operates well! I am accomplishing work that would have taken a crew to handle, and all by myself and the DR.

In my area, the Dealers are really lacking, but Tech support is there and will tell you what to keep on hand for additional parts so you can have limited downtime or none. These Machines are durable, reliable and easy to work on. I now will continue to grow my DR fleet as time progresses. Thank you for your dedicated services and superior equipment.... Hi I have a fairly steep hill on my property with lots of blackberry canes and tough weedy grass. I was looking for something that could cut the plants and not tip over while doing so. This mower fits the bill. I was very happy with the purchase and delivery. DR called before delivery and asked about the road could handle a truck. The driver called ahead as instructed and worked with me on the drop off. The machine itself was easy to assemble and after reading the step by step instructions easy to start and operate. The power drive and steering are something to get used to after pushing a mower and the 20 horses can really throw you around the yard. I was able to cut about an acre of my hill side without worrying about a tip over. This is a great product and a good company to purchase from. Thanks

This is an absolutely great mower for woods and meadows! One criticism of the Briggs & Stratton 20 H.P. engine: the vacuum advance line on the left side is "exposed" and has pulled out by nearby brush branches twice this summer. If it's pulled out, the engine misses badly until the line is reconnected. Not hard to do, but irritating.

The mower performs as advertised. Made the task of cleaning brush off of 2 lots full of 2 - 3" gum and pines easy. Weeds and brambles to 3 ft did not even slow down.

I am very pleased with my new DR. This is the second one I have owned and I am pleased with the added power and features. The machine basically does everything the marketing people tell you it will do which is very rare. My only disappointment is the exposed wiring harness on the right side behind the exhaust stack. As I cut brush and brushy weeds I have to be careful that pieces don't get tangled in the wiring. This wiring and the oil drain line should be better protected.

The machine works well, as advertised. As the owner of a cattle ranch, I am always looking for items that would make my life easier - this does that. Suggestion - seems to me that this would make an excellent base for a small electrical generator, possibly in the 6-12 KW range. I have a large standby generator, but this may be just the ticket for welders, sprayers or anything that would require a mobile portable generator. Just a thought.

DR 20 HP field and brush mower This machine will just about do anything asked of it. Except for a couple of glitches with a wiring harness and incompletely packaged accessories, which were corrected by support free of charge, no problems. I am 70 yrs young and I can manage this thing. I recommend it to anyone who has some heavy cutting to do. The electric start is great! I have cut stuff that would be hard to do even with a chainsaw, and if you can hang on, the DR will take it down. I have yet to make the 20 HP engine even breathe hard. A suggestion: a super slow reverse gear.

I purchased this brush devourer a few weeks ago and I have to say I am very impressed. I've been clearing 8-foot weeds, thick grass, 3" trees, and many thickets of blackberry briers, and this machine devours them all with ease. I now have much more usable pasture space. Next, I will turn my attention toward cutting (re-clearing) the horseback-riding trails. I'm also going to test whether the grader blade can move the horse manure piles around. This was a great purchase.

I purchased this model to see if I could start getting a handle on the thousands of small to mid sized cedar trees that are starting to take over our oak woods in central OK. I was very impressed with the ease of use. While the larger cedars were more daunting this mower simply climbed up the trunk bent it over and devoured the parasite. In the first 2 hours I decimated close to a thousand cedars ranging from 1 foot tall yo over 8 foot tall. 1000 down and I estimate 15000 to go.

100% disabled grandfather loves it!

After retiring from University of Florida, I knew if I wanted to be active at age 98 like my Dad was, I needed a challenge for the next 30 years of my life so I purchased 55 acres of land and want to make a park out of it. The DR Field and Brush Mower knocked my socks off! This mower sliced through dense underbrush as a hot knife through whipped butter. Yes, it is heavy but this 100% disabled grandfather is able to handle it and turn it around and get it up a ramp into a storage shed. Nothing cheap or flimsy about this well-designed equipment. I look forward to using this for the next 30 years! Again, I'm impressed and very well pleased.

An excelent brush mower that handles small trees and dense grass and brush. Plenty of power to get the job done. A bit of time to become famular with proper operation, dual and single wheel drive but once you learn it is easy to operate to get the job done and around obsticals. Mows over bricks and 3 inch stones with out problem.

Fiel and Brush Mower 20 HP Pro XL
Posted by: DONALD S. from CAMBRIDGE, NY on 08/02/2014

Very well made machine . Easy to operate controls well thought out . My terrain is very uneven and steep in many spots . This makes it difficult at times to control the machine . If you have hillsides with dips and bumps rocks etc it may not be the best solution perhaps renting goats would be safer and easier . On ground that is relatively level it's amazing how well it works nothing seems to make it work hard . I have been able to use it on the rugged hillside on my property but caution is advised as it tires you out keeping it on track . Please note this is not the fault of the machine rather a limitation of its use . The machine is robust and well made .

This machine is real BEAST MODE

Before I write this review I should say that I am the KING of skeptics. I research everything and rarely believe anything I hear until I have verified the information for myself. But in the case of this machine and its ability to do what it is designed to do... The hype is COMPLETELY TRUE. I have a very large, hilly property in the NW. And like any property in the NW I struggle with black berries, salmon berries and other woodsy plants. I had a lot of concerns that the grade in combination with the LARGE amount of woodsy brush was going to be too much for this machine. But I am very happy to say that I was wrong. I have plowed through an acre of straight brush and thicket and this machine has even bogged down, ONCE. In some places the blackberries are over ten feet high. After I use a hedge trimmer to cut them down to a manageable height that the weight of the machine can bend them over and run over them I have not had a single problem. That is not to say that I haven't gotten a work out and been in situation where I really needed to muscle in some spots. But that is to be expected with the terrain that I am dealing with. I would HIGHLY suggest this machine to anyone looking to clear a large area of brush, especially in the NW.

A Great Machine, works perfect for my use!!

I recently purchased a 20HP Pro-XL Machine, and it has exceeded my expectations. We have 4 acres of land, the only cleared portion is where the house sits, and the drive way. We are leaving all of the large trees, but there is, or should I say was, a bunch of thick under brush and small saplings. The trees are too close together for a larger, tractor mounted bush hog. So, I thought I would give one of these a shot. This machine walked right though it all like it was nothing!!!! I have had no issues with the machine at all, starts easily and works perfectly. I highly recommend this machine.

Great Mower - Engine lacks
Posted by: JAMES K. from SNOHOMISH, WA on 04/28/2014
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
This machine is a brute. It really does a great job on knocking down anything in its path. Handles the hills well, does great on flat ground, is surprisingly nimble for such a powerful machine. Some of the reviews indicate that it is a workout to run, but my experience in the first month is that while it may be a bit of workout, the energy it saves by doing the work by hand or with a lesser brush mower is substantial. The work I can accomplish in a few hours with this would take me a week with other tools. Fantastic and necessary machine. Now for the bad news. Right from the start I have had some worries about the engine. From its first run it would want to cut off for no apparent reason. It starts to bog down, come back, bog down, come back maybe a dozen times before it comes back to full life. No clogs in the deck, no lack of fuel. No reason for it to do this. The tech told me to add some additive. Understandable on an older unit, but this thing has a few hours on it. No reason for it to act like a senior citizen! I'll try a couple of things, but am increasingly suspect of this engine. Maybe it's just this one, maybe it's a design flaw. I only have this one, so I can't very well guess on that issue. I will say that if this thing conks out on a small hill, it may take some work to get it back onto flat ground. It is a heavy unit. That works in its favor for the most part, but sure makes me think twice about challenging it too much and causing more work to move it. I really want this to do what it is made to do, I just want it to act more reliable. If I can get that taken care of, it will be with me for a very long time. Without this engine issue, it would be a very solid 5 STAR!
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review. We’re sorry for the inconvenience you have encountered with the engine & are glad the shop found the disconnected fuel pump vacuum hose for you. Hopefully it’s been running fine since. We will get a hold of you to make sure it is.

Q.You mention all the qualities of this unit, but one item of interest you don't discuss is the cutting height. Since this will cut saplings up to 3", I need to know that I can cut over them with my finish mower without hitting any stumps.
A.Hello Mark, thank you for your question. The cutting height for on this unit is a fixed 3.5". This is a great machine for clearing saplings in your yard or field. When cutting down bigger saplings, the deck can ride up, leaving behind stumps higher than the 3.5". We recommend taking a second pass over them, to re-cut them. We also offer a heavy-duty brush blade that may be helpful for your project as well. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions.

Q.Why do you not have break away blades on the self propelled brush movers similar to the ones on your towed models?
A.The walk behind brush mowers have a shear pulley at the top of the spindle. The pulley should shear around the center bolt if anything too hard is encountered to save the engine from damage.
