Features

Powerful Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the obvious choice for our Field and Brush Mowers. They are easy to start, comfortable to use, and feature a debris management system that protects the engine from whatever you kick up while you’re cutting.

Floating Deck

The deck is suspended from the frame, allowing it to ride up and over high points, minimizing scalping and protecting the drivetrain from damage.

No-Tools Height Adjustment

Choose your mowing height—from 4" to 7.5"—with two easy-turning hand cranks.

Pivoting Blades

Unique swinging blades pivot when hitting an immovable object, to protect the mower’s blade, spindle and engine.

Remote Control

A remote control allows you to engage and disengage the mower blade—right from the driver’s seat of your towing vehicle.

Chain Debris Guard

Similar to the debris shields used on commercial roadside mowers, this guard stops material from flying forward

Mows Outside Wheelbase

The mowing blade extends outside of the wheels—so you can mow right up next to fences, walls, hedgerows and other obstacles without interference.

Big “Brush Bar”

The 2.75” thick steel frame acts as a brush bar...pushing over saplings, brambles, and other vegetation before feeding it under the deck

44” Mulching Deck

The 44” mowing deck is enclosed on 3 sides, so cut material is chopped and re-chopped, leaving windrows behind.

Outrigger Tow Bar

The 2-piece tow bar allows for offsetting the mowing deck to the left or right...or you can mow right behind your tow vehicle.

Mow up to 2 acres per hour!

Mowing times will vary with conditions (density of growth and features of terrain), but hooked up to your ATV the DR 20 HP Tow-Behind Brush Mower can clear as much 2 acres per hour — while you ride in comfort!

Almost a 5 This machine is a beast! Exceeded my expectations! Like some othe posts I’ve seen I experienced loose bolts on the left side of the unit when it was shipped. The height adjustment bolts wer sitting on the unit and were not tight. I’m glad someone found them on the truck or I would have had to make a trip to the hardware store.

Rugged unit

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I brought this unit as an as is from the factory store. We really went to town on our rough over grown land. Not knowing how the first owner took care of this unit always add to questions but I took a chance . The unit does an amazing job . It has all the power needed to do what a 3 point hitch unit would do . It isn't as ez to back in and such w the unit but for those of us without a tractor, this is the next best . It's heavy which make the unit stay on the ground. Traveling at higher speeds the unit balnaces like anything would ,but is is very secure . The min issues I have is 1 the fuel tank strap is not easily removeable . My full tank broke a strap then the line was pulling out of the tank . So I now will have to rig up a stronger strap . 2 . The unit comes w pins and the pin that keeps the pin in place is a cotter pin which is like a hair pin. So it's open and you just need anything just tall enough to hang up on the pin and the pin is pushed out then the pin going through the hitch either come part way out and u bend the arm or all the way out and u lost the mower and risk running over the coard and control box. I drilled out the hitch pin and now use a lynch pin. And no issues since. 3 the cord from the unit to the control box is so short that I have mine tied on the back of my wheeler, line is so short that with the line tie wrapped to the arm to keep it safe is too short to get line from the unit onto my ATV. And when taking a turn I have little to no slack . I have no where enough cord to control the unit up front for safety . Changing the belt takes a little time but not bad . The unit compares to no no other unit.

The field and brush mower is a great mower. The only problem I had with the machine was it had a bad throttle cable and one of the new brush blades were damage during shipping. I called the customer service they were very helpful and replace the parts with no problem. I’m very happy with the unit and the service. I would recommend the this to anyone.

Great brush mower, but

This brush mower cuts like a beast, Took it through some pretty rough and tight ATV trail's and handled them with no problem. The offset feature made cutting the outer trail edges easy No branches hitting me in the face. Also, cut a 1 acre clover field like butter. There are though several reasons I gave a 4 star rating instead of 5. 1. The 7amp starter fuse blew while cutting. 2. The height adjustment nut on the top of the handle kept coming loose. Needed to bring along a adjustable wrench to retighten each time I adjusted mower height. 3. A 3/8 diameter hose came off engine air solenoid while cutting causing engine to stop.

Took longer to get it than I thought it would. Good brush cutter. Have taken it through very tall brush and it has done an excellent job. Nice that it can be set to a cutting height of 7.5 inches. Rolls very easily, so one person can move it around. Ordered replacement blades and never heard that they were backordered until I called. Arrived ready to use as soon as I put in oil and gas. Really need better highlighting of the need to burnish the clutch. Glad I read through everything. So far this has been an excellent purchase.

I really like this mower. We have mowed along a tree lined creek, around a pasture, and the edge of a pond. It works great. I especially like that the offset position allows me to reach pretty far under the trees without getting too much resistance from tree branches. My only complaint is that the cord for blade engagement switch is too short to reach into by UTV seating area. A longer cord would be nice.

Just delivered and dropped off by residential delivery service. Kudos to your choice of carriers. Unpacking and set up was easy and quick. I use this on a farm with 11 acres of woodline. It tore thru 6'-8' flesh eating thorn bushes like they weren't even there and after I made one pass they weren't. It didn't hiccup once. The floating deck allowed it to safely pass over 6diameter logs. It made short work of 6'-12'dense patches of horse weed, nettles and random saplings. We always name our favorite machines. This one we named Toni, after my wife's good childhood friend because it's orange and Toni pronounces it oinge.

The Beast

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I bought this to maintain a very brushy property. It tows easily behind a Honda Rancher. Had to replace the inflatable tires with solid rubber ones due to mesquite thorns foam filler not enough. This thing is a beast. I can run it over tall grass and brush without any issues. Starts reliably, even after being in storage. I love the offset for running near fence lines and under low hanging limbs and brush while riding comfortably to the side. Bought this to avoid the purchase, maintenance, and storage of a tractor and have no regrets. I would repeat the purchase again.

I couldn't get this Bad-Boy uncrated fast enough!!! The first thing I did was attach the tow bar to the wrong end, after reading the instructions I corrected my error. Once I got it up and running I was ready to kick a on the weeds in my fields. I flew through the task at hand like a breeze, it was like my machine was asking if that's ALL ya got, hum I hardly wait to mow my pastures again!! Marty C.

Great machine Quality control needs work
Posted by: Gene G. from LANDER, WY on 04/21/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
The Pro XL-44T does what it's designed to do chop brush. We used it for sagebrush that had been growing 15 years and it chopped right through it. Some of the trunks were at least 3 in diameter, maybe more. Very impressed. It would have received 5 stars if Quality Control was better. My machine came with a bolt missing that holds the deck to the frame and the bolt that holds the idler pulley bracket had not been completely installed at the factory. I discovered the problem when the drive belt came off for no apparent reason. Nuts holding the height adjustment cranks on were also loose. Lock washers or blue locktite would take care of that issue. Once those issues were corrected the machine works like a charm. Definitely recommend it.

XL 44 20 hp brush mower
Posted by: Bob R. from The Dalles, OR on 04/15/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
DR Field needs to place higher standards on quality control. Couldn’t turn over engine, found loose wire at start switch, wouldn’t throttle up to high idle and had to manually choke engine, found control cable on wrong side of engine control, had to remove and reconfigure on correct side. Stripped hardware on start switch plate will have to correct. Several loose fasteners. Very unfortunate this unit came from the factory this way. Operational,” fantastic “ works better than I thought it would.
Response from DR SupportHello Bob, thank you for taking the time to write to us and let us know that you had experienced these issues with your Field and Brush Mower. We pride ourselves as a company in building quality machines that can be put to the test and last. What you've experienced is certainly not the standard nor what we want our customers to experience. With you're feedback we are able to identify and correct these as needed. It is with the sincerest hope that we have been able to rectify this with you. Please feel free to contact us if there is anything else we can do.

Came much sooner then estimated Super easy to use and does a great job cutting. Very durable. Only 'issue' I had was no where in the manual or online was I able to find information on blade tension. I emailed and did not get a reply so I called and got the info I needed. A day later, I got a reply back. My only suggestion would be is to add more info about the blades.

Amazing Performance

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We purchased a DR PRO XL-44, 20 HP Tow-Behind Brush Mower in August 2017 and picked it up at a depot in our long-bed truck. It fit perfectly. No hassles. My wife made sure that we had all of the accessories, including the UTV extended remote control kit, maintenance kit, HD brush blade kit, maintenance meter, tow ball kit, and the nifty oil extractor. Bought it to deal with 5' tall grass, sagebrush, yucca, and thick, fibrous snakeweed on parts of our 40-acre property in the high country of rural Colorado to aid in fire mitigation. We had assistance at home to unload it and used it shortly thereafter. We prefer the enclosed cab of our Arctic Cat Prowler 700 to our ATV due to dust, tall brush, and occasional flying debris. The property had never been cleared. We removed large rocks as needed and able. The field mower cuts through everything. Just slow down for the thicker brush. If it stops cutting, turn off the blades, back up, then resume operational procedures. Read your manual. Two concerns: (1) the cable catches on brush. I secured the cable to the tow bar and a small opening in the back of the UTV tailgate to keep from snagging. (2) Periodically, it is necessary to clear off the engine cooling fin shield. Anyway, customer service was very helpful and knowledgeable. We did have to wait an extra week but it was worth the wait due to production. We are very happy with our purchase and its cutting performance. Thus, we give it a five-star rating!

Tow Behind Limitations
Posted by: THOMAS D. from Weedsport, NY on 09/16/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
In general a sturdy machine with main benefit being able to offset from towing vehicle. However, I have 3 significant areas of concern: 1) Front of mower is 1.25" higher than rear, which might be good for cutting brush but is not for cutting grass. This causes blades to cut twice, which uses more power and does not make as clean a cut. 2) The open space between front of deck and front of machine, along with front of mower being tilted upward, allows cut material to blow up through there about 3' in the air and then arc back and come down right on top of the engine cooling fin shield. In some fields I had to stop every 100 meters to clean the shield off. I have fastened an 11" wide board across the top of the frame over that space to solve the problem. 3) The engine will only run with a fully charged battery. I have worked with many engines over the years and this is the first time I have seen one that will not charge up a battery. In summary, it is nice to be able to offset a mower from my compact tractor but the improvement over my 4' wide mounted rotary cutter is not as much as I had hoped for.

Good mower
Posted by: Cary L. from Katy, TX on 09/14/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
First of all the mower does a good job. My parents land had 4ft tall thick grass among other weeds and small trees. The mower goes right thru most of it without a problem. Sometimes you have to slow down for the thicker grass. The last time I used the mower the blades quit functioning. I pulled it back to the house and found the idler pulley had come unbolted. I bolted it back on and it works again. I'm guessing it wasn't tightened properly at the factory because I've only put about 5 hours on it. I'm surprised that the remote switch for the blades comes with such a short wire. I'm guessing it was sized for a four wheeler but I'm using a Kawasaki mule and it's about 4 ft short. Overall it's performing well. I'll be mowing again this weekend so hopefully everything will run properly

Bought the Pro XL-44 mostly to deal with up to 5 ft. sagebrush on parts of a 40 acre property. Gets the job done! As the write-up said, if you can drive your ATV over it, it'll pretty much chop it down. I found through experimentation that if you cut a 1/2 path width each pass, when you go back over it it really minces up the slash from the first pass. Would recommend this machine to anyone!

This mower is a BEAST
Posted by: James L. from Johnson City, TN on 08/09/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I purchased my mower about one month ago. Set up was easy and the mower is easy to operate. I had to order an extension cable to have a long enough cable to be able to engage the mower from my Kubota UTV. I have mowed probably close to 6 acres with it so far, some of which contained brush and briars taller than the roof on my UTV and had no problems. This mower is a beast and will mow through thick, tall brush. I have also mowed another area that had previously been bush hogged but weeds were growing back. I lowered the mowing deck as far as it would go and it looks like I used a lawn mower.....smooth, clean cut. Have only had one issue which was a flat tire on the back. I easily removed and fixed the flat and had the tire back on without any problem.

This machine will cut through anything. Doesn't seem to slow the slightest. The pin clips used in the tongue swivel points get pulled out by brush. Work better if you put the pins in upside down so the clips on top. The mower will drift down hill when pulling across a rough side slope. I hit a steel T post which the mower cut off with out the slightest hesitation. Don't try this at home. I need to add additional tethers for the blade clutch power shut off switch to keep it from catching on brush. I haven't noticed any thing being thrown out from under the deck even with the deck in the highest position. With the power of this machine beware.

I was a bit disappointed as it would not start after getting it filled wth oil and gas. Called the rep. up for advise and went through the procedure of checking out the clutch, unplugging the gas solenoid, cleaning the carb-?. Ended up taking it in for warranty work...bad solenoid . Loose grease fittings also. It was a bit of a head ache at first but I've used it now for about five hours on hilly ground and it is truly a well designed machine for knocking down brush, weeds, and small trees. It's a little monster!

I have used my Pro XL-44 20HP for two months on deer food plots and access to many of my hunting blinds. I replaced a swisher mower with 10.5 HP motor. This mower does excellent job on high grasses and small brush. The 4 wheel design eliminates scalping on rough terrain. Only complaint is the front wheel brackets often gets clogged with cut grass in high grass mowing. This restricts the front wheels from turning. But love this machine over my swisher.

Excellent Scrub Mower

Our property has over 20 acres of scrub brush and the new DR has made waste of this pesty scrub. We have fairly steep inclines and the DR safely follows our UTV. The only thing that I wish for would be a larger deck to cut down on the extra time of mowing. It also mowed grasses and weeds over four feet like a champ on the first pass.

This machine lived up to my expectations. It churned up and spit out everything it was rated for. The only issue I had was a Battery/starting issue, which I need to resolve. I am impressed and that takes a lot to do! I would give it 5 Stars if it were not for the battery issue!

This is one AWESOME tow behind mower!!!

This mower is a great little machine!!! I live in the coastal mountains of the far Northern part of California aka the Lost coast. This mower cuts 3 ft tall coastal grass and Scottish Broom brush with ease and does a nice job of mulching the cut materials into small pieces. The 20 HP motor has plenty of power to do the job. Basically anything that my Grizzly 660 can get over it will mow it. The relatively compact size makes it far easier to maneuver tightly around the base of trees than a tractor with a mow deck on it and is is less destructive on softer ground than a tractor. The low center of gravity of the machine and the floating deck tackles uneven ground quite nicely without scarring the ground. So my impression of it after mowing several acres with it is, it wasn't cheap to purchase, but it was well worth the money. Overall so far I'm highly impressed!!!

We have a small field that is impossible to get into with a big tractor and mower because of the rocks. With this and the atv it is easy to see and manover around the rocks and with the questions height setting it will go over the smaller rocks. I was a bit surprised how big it was, but I love it. The electric start was a huge plus. As I was finishing up a women drove by turned around drove back and stopped to ask if I liked it. She said her husband wanted one. Hopefully he will order one too. With all the rain this year I know the weeds will be terrible. I feel that they will be some what manageable with my new mower.

First Impression of DR Field and Brush Mower
Posted by: Larry Cotten from Morgan Mill, TX on 03/28/2017

I have had a mixed experience. I am pleased with the ease of operation. The performance has varied cutting some brush but not consistently. It cuts green field grass but when it comes to tall dry grass it tends to lay down and not cut. I am on the lowest setting but will try raising the level to see if it enhances the performance. I had one starting episode that was resolved when I discovered the flex tube that goes in the silver cam cover was out of the hole. I think as I work through the issues and better learn the equipment I will achieve the results I anticipate.

This is one the best machines that I have ever purchased

I had my doubts about this mower because of the claims of what it could do compared to it's size and price. Now that I have used it, I am completely blown away. It really does plow over anything that you put in front of it and mulches it to where it is hard to tell that it even existed. It is very heavy which helps it do that. I was previously renting a Bobcat/BrushCat to clear my land ($400 bucks a day) and this does a nicer job. I was also concerned about the tow bar and if it was going to be strong enough to tow off to the side without bending or breaking because of the close proximity of the pin and the pivot bolt (not enough leverage). It is very heavy duty and seems to be fine but only time will tell. I am one of those who loves to make things better and I would say that I have never purchased anything significant where I didn't find something that needed improved. This is no exception but the list is very small: The cable that routes through 2 cable loops on the tow bar eventually starts to stick out where it can be caught by the material that is hitting the front of the unit. I found myself turning around and staring at it to make sure it was ok. That lasted about 5 minutes before I used tie wraps to secure the cable closer to the mower and closer to the ATV hitch. Problem solved and now I can watch where I am going instead of watching the mower - although watching the mower can be fun!. There should probably be 4 cable loops instead of only 2. Even though this mower is not designed to back up, if you are mowing a fenced in area you will need to back up to get in to the corners. I would like to see a flexible rear guard that would allow it to back over obstacles. (you can only back up when the tow bar is in the straight position) Occasionally my lawn will get so tall that my finish mower has a hard time getting through it. This brush mower has a pretty nice finish so I plan on using it also on my lawn in these cases. I am very happy with this purchase and even though there is a 6 month return policy, I have destroyed the original carton because there is no way I will be sending this back! Well Done DR!

Great machine overall

My dad and I have been using the brush mower with heavy duty blades since January '16. We pull it with an ATV. It is used for clearing pine saplings and laurel. It is a powerful machine but there have been some issue. Pros: I. Strong and powerful motor 2. Thick deck plate 3. Great customer support Cons: I. Flat tires on the rear. We've had 2 so far. A solid foam filled tire would be a useful feature. The frequent flat tires are the machines Achilles heel. 2. As mentioned the remote cable blade switch is susceptible to damage. 3. The pto spring broke soon after delivery. Evidently there was a flaw and dr has addressed it. The machine does a wonderful job in harsh terrain. It's worth the price for serious woods clearing and maintenance.

Built well and with the optional "heavy duty" blades does a great job with heavy brush and saplings and brambles. Great product overall, however, the wiring is exposed and susceptible to catching on the brush and unplugging and the battery supplied is not the same quality as the rest of the mower.

Good Machine - But Don't Buy the Electric Start Model
Posted by: Adam C. from Inola, OK on 02/24/2016
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
This machine is built like a tank and performs as DR has described. I've used it for about 20 hours on tall grass, brush, and saplings. No problems. But the electronic start model is giving me problems for two reasons. 1. The battery won't take a charge. DR is making this right by sending me a new battery. 2. For all of the focus DR gives to quality and durability, the wire harness is very exposed. I've had sticks or brush get caught on wires twice now and in each case it has pulled the wires out of the fuse housing. It's sidelined my machine both times. On one occasion I was able to repair it. On the other, DR had to send me a new wire harness. Why not put some sort of housing around it to protect the wires? I'm guessing the manual-start model does not have these problems, and would recommend you buy that one instead.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR Tow Behind Brush Mower. We apologize that you've had some difficulty with the battery and are sharing your comments on the wire harness with our engineering staff. Someone from our Tech Support Department will be contacting you by phone to make sure that your machine is working to your satisfaction now. We appreciate hearing from our customers and thank you for choosing DR Power. We'll be in touch soon!

Even with it still in the crate, the construction and overall ruggedness of the unit was very impressive. I am very happy with my purchase and even though this mower is substantially more money than other mowers like it it was worth every penny and I know that it has many many years of dependable service to come.

A Monster
Posted by: Greg B. from Southeast Corner, MI on 12/21/2015
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
First of all, this does NOT come with any oil. Not a problem if the website would have noted this. Second, there should be a built in pickup for the hour meter, "plug & play" if you will. Wrapping the induction wire around the spark plug wire has certain challenges on the side with the shortest spark wire. Mounting it with two sheet metal screws was easy, but maybe include them? This machine is an absolute monster and cuts easily through brush, brambles, multiflora roses, downed branches, and Hawthorne (as long as you temper your speed). Truly, if you can pull the mower over it, it will get chopped up. Straight behind or offset, this does a great job! This being said, it only works if you can keep it running. Four times now, the engine stalled. After some trouble-shooting it was discovered that the breather tube from the fuel pump to the valve cover was getting pulled out- apparently from brush/branches in passing. I rigged up a guard out of scrap aluminum that deflects incoming brush. Seems like an oversight on the part of the B&S or DR engineers? I was going to upload a picture, but I see that feature, and responses from DR to reviews, seems to be missing now? I did a lot of research before selecting this mower, overall I am glad I bought it. Customer service stepped up when I ordered an accessory kit for the B&S, but got Kohler. They understood how the webpage listing was not clear when selecting the items. If this, the oil notice, and a minor modification to protect exposed vulnerabilities are corrected, this would rate a solid 5 stars. Pulled by Honda Rancher 420 4x4 without issue.

This equipment works great and will cut the brush quickly. Keep the travel at 4 miles an hour and don't try the fast speeds in the video. Will not work properly and is hard on equipment. Offset does not work on heavy brush such as blackberry brambles and again is hard on ATV pulling it. Use it straight on. Don't buy the hourly meter unless they start drilling a hole and providing a designated mounting place. Other than that it is a great machine and is a valuable piece of equipment to my son and I. Definitely recommend it.

Have put about 5 hours on so far. First oil change, should be more room between filter and frame. Hard not to spill oil. Main oil drain very handy. Motor has good power but take extra can of gas, seems to burn about a gallon an hour or more. Height adjust is very handy. Used mostly in grass and high weeds so far. Will be using in brush very good so far. No build up under deck. Side angling is handy. Deflectors in front of wheels are good idea, work good for mowing near fence posts and trees. Easy to hook up, light tongue weight. Had a small issue with throttle cable, make sure to pull tight to right as instructions indicate. Came loose once but retightened and seems to be holding.

I have the 20hp Kohler version and it will literally cut anything that you can run over. I have destroyed 3" hawthorne trees, massive rose thickets, hidden stumps, and even cut the top off a rock (not recommended, but it did cut the rock in half). I have run over thousands of thorny plants, and the tires have never gone flat. It does not seem possible to stall the engine, regardless of what you drag it over. On the minus side, the lower hitch tab has gotten a little bent, and the wheel sleeve bearings are just about worn out after 2 seasons. Having the control box mount on your ATV sounds good, but it also means that you have to attach/detach it every time you mow, and my control box and cables are taking a beating. Also, do not expect to finish cut grass with this unit, since the blades do not have any lift to them (zero). The throttle occasionally goes back to idle by itself, but I put a piece of duct tape on the throttle lever which takes care of that issue. Another reviewer mentioned having the hitch pin fall out - I had the same problem, but if you install it upside down (hair pin on top instead of bottom), obstacles can't knock the hair pin out of the hitch pin. Very shortly after posting my original review, I received an email and phone call from DR Product Support. We had a very informative and helpful conversation, and were able to resolve most of the (relatively minor) problems which I have had over the past few years. It is refreshing to encounter a company who stands behind their product and listens to their customers as DR does.

Bought the 20 hp unit. This thing is awesome!!! I was cutting thick 6 foot tall grass. You have to go slow but it gets the job done. People need to realize this is not a pto driven tool, so they shouldn't expect it to have the same power and speed as one. I was thoroughly impressed with this cutting machine as it will cut anything you can drive over. My property is extremely rough and it handled the terrain with ease. I am looking forward to next fall just because I can't wait to brush hog my field. Worth every penny!!

Could not use it until the extension kit finally arrived (Back ordered). I did finally get a chance to transport it out to our property and installed the extension kit on sat 8/30 but could not completely finish the install due to darkness. I went back on Sun and finished. It started right away the first time, but died the second try like it was running out of fuel. Tank was full and shut off was in the correct position? Don't think cable is operating the throttle correctly, even though it was installed as per instructions. Hope to go back and do further checking later this week. I will let you know if I run into the same trouble. Thanks, Don H.

On the positive side this machine really knocks down the brush!! If you can drive over it with your ATV it will cut it! Im impressed with the power plant, this V twin is perfect for my use. Very little vibration when engaging the blades. I was worried that the tongue would not be strong enough but turns out to be heavy duty enough for any abuse i want to throw at it. On the negative side the tip of the tongue where you pin up too the ATV has proven to be the weak point. 2 hours on the job using the pin supplied the upper and lower pin holders spread apart shearing off the clip holding the pin in and resulted in the machine falling off my bike. The result is the power and gas cables ripped out because the control box was mounted up front with me [i bought the extensions]. Also lost the throttle spring that in my opinion was a bad set up in the first place. If you were to improve on this machine my suggestion would be to use thicker gauge steel for the tongue pin holder or another idea would be a form of safety chains so if it did this again all the cables would stand a chance. Another positive is the electrical connections for engine start/run/blades. When putting it together i thought a better connection system must be out there than this. After having it fall off the bike though thats where it separated and i only had to repair one male clip. Turned out to be a blessing on hind sight. Hope this helps you improve on what is otherwise proving to be a impressive workaholic! Will be in touch for replacement gas cable in the near future. NOTE: i picked Michigan as the state so it would accept my review but actually i'm from the province of Ontario in Canada. Regards Jim

This brush cutter is awesome, probably a bit overpowered, but cuts anything I've run over (except rocks). I recently had the cotter pin fall out of my hitch pin leaving the cutter behind with the controller attached to my ATV. The electronics and throttle control were pulled out of the controller. DR sent me a new controller box and cables under warranty and have outstanding customer service. Once I make these repairs, I plan on attaching safety tow chains to prevent this from ever happening again! I would recommend this for all users!

Bought my pro model last spring and am very pleased with it We have 150 acres of just about a little of everything from hard woods to grassy fields. I bought this mainly for the 8 foot tall pricker bushes on a lot of the property. It is hell going thru the stuff but one pass thru and it takes down 75% of it. This stuff is wicked hard to cut but a couple of passes over it and it's gone. This machine is pretty amazing it goes over 6 - 8 inch logs that are lying on the ground with no problems of hurting the blades. Great design My wife is so impressed with it when I told her about the roto hog and how I want to plant food plots she said order it. Thanks DR

I purchased this product back at the beginning of the summer. I used it to cut fields and clear roads on my hunting property. This product does everything advertised and more. I didn't find any situation where it didn't get the job done better than expected. The only thing that happened over the month I used it clearing land was the dip stick came out and was lost cutting tall bitter weed. I ordered a new one and drilled a hole in the top to zip tie it to the mower. Problem solved. Great Mower!

This unit is build very well, I have used it for about 5 months now and have thrown at it everything I had. Multiflora rose, brush, trees, tall grass, etc it performed great with only one problem. The oil dip stick on the 20 hp model is on the top left hand corner when standing behind the mower. For most mowing jobs it works just fine, but when you use the field and brush mower in brushy or low hanging trees guess what. The dip stick gets pulled out and falls on the ground with out you noticing and then oil is sprayed all over your mower causing a sticky mess. This has happened to me twice and every time it was using in a brushy area. So my recommendation would be to DR would be install a twist on oil cap instead of one held in by O rings. But other then that this mower rocks and is well worth the money!!!

Bought this mower to maintain my 5 acres and my mother in-laws 5 also. I am impressed with the power of this machine. Mowed right over blackberries that the quad had a hard time climbing over. The crate that it comes in is big so it will not fit in the back of a pickup. Was easy to put together and start mowing. I will need to find a different clip for the hitch as I lost two clips already but the pin for the hitch is long enough so it does not come out. This thing is heavy and well built. Looking forward to using it in the years to come

My 20 hp Pro-XL Brush Mower was very easy to uncrate and assemble. The directions in the manual were clear and concise. Everything fit and went together with no problem. I'm impressed with how heavily built the mower is. The 7ga. deck, large pneumatic tires and quality Kohler motor are impressive. The mower was not inexpensive, but I believe it's an excellent value and look forward to many years of service with it on my 65 acre hunting property.

I recently purchased a 20Hp PRO XL Tow Behind Field & Brush Mower. I researched several brands and believe I made an excellent choice, The XP needs very little assembly to go from the shipping crate to field. It out performs in many areas such as ease of use, type and quanity of grass and brush it cuts and is definetly built to last, withs its heavy duty frame and 20Hp Kohler motor. I truly believe it will give me many years of outstanding service.

I have pondered about what to do with my pasture for 8 years. The poor horse has had to dig in tall weeds to find her meals and the brush was taking over. I couldn't afford a tractor larger than my lawn one but I did have an ATV. When I heard about your pull-behind, it was all I could do but think about getting one. Can I express how much I love it? It is easy for me to handle and adjust, and cuts the pasture down in hours, verses days with the lawn tractor. It doesn't bounce like the finish mower I once had, and jiggle apart. It is built well and has no change in engine noise when going through heavy stuff. I have never been happier with a product! Thanks Dr. Power!

I've only had my tow behind bruch mower a few weeks but it's already proven it's worth. I live on a 50 acre farm in Northern Minnesota. This machine delivers ease of use combined with all the power I need to clear some old fields that were starting to return to tag alder and scrub brush. I've taken it through low swampy areas and high ground with no problems. A definite two thumbs up from me!

I use this mower to cut grass on my 2.5 acres on extremely steep mountain side in western Canada. It pulls nicely behind my ATV and has a low profile to provide extreme stability on steep embankments. All parts on the brush cutter are laser cut and all aspects of the mower show that great care was taken in design and engineering of this brush cutter.

A powerful rough cut mower.

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I have 5 acres much of which is covered with brush. The brush here at mountain altitudes in Northern California is buck brush, manzanita and choke weed. The brush cutter is surprisingly well balanced at the attach point and fairly easy to move, but I am surprised that a ball hitch is not offered. I had to attach my own. The engine is powerful and the blades very strong, but manzanita is too strong for it. The buck brush and choke weed were destroyed, just leaving sticks. In dry weather the brush cutter throws up an impressive cloud of dust, especially if you go over a mound, and since my lot is sloping that happens quite a lot. I suppose it will all end up flat eventually! I tow it using a 30 hp UTV and it manages it very well. The turning circle is quite wide and I got boxed in dead ends a few times, but it reverses more easily than I thought. After serious brush cutting the machine was a brown box, but a hose cleaned it far more easily than I thought. The machine is heavy duty and well built. The foot adjustment for deck height was so hard I had to extend the platform with an adjustable wrench and stand on the end of the wrench. I weigh 140 lbs.

Not a reliable tool
Posted by: Rapido from Virginia on 06/01/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
I have had this brush cutter for less than a year and it has had to go in for repairs twice. It currently sits with a clutch problem after only about 20 hours of use in a horse pasture that has no brush. The height adjustment is not usable and this is after it was repaired. The first start this year the battery was dead despite the trickle charge and once it was running the clutch would not engage, same problem as last year. This is an expensive brush cutter but if it has to be repaired every time you want to use it then it is way to expensive. I have owned other DR tools and liked them but this one is a real disappointment.
Response from DR SupportWe're sorry that you have had these issues. Thanks for leaving a review. The clutch is run directly off the battery. So if the battery is low it may not have enough power to run the clutch after starting the engine. We'll get a shop visit set up to get it working the way it should!

Cuts Brush really well, along with small saplings

We have had the 20 HP Brush mower for a 1 1/2 years. We use it to keep some of our fields and pathways in check, on about 15-20 acres. Very durable. Had a hard time getting it to start, the first time, as an electrical connection kept coming loose, in the deck. Once we figured out the problem, and secured the wires better, no other issues. If you let it sit for a few weeks or months in between, be sure to put a fuel stabilizer in the gas. Cuts great on tall grass and most seedlings. We have a lot of locust trees. The kind with the long thorns. The machine did struggle on some of the larger ones, 1-2 inch diameter, and the thorns gave us both flat tires. These were fixed with some green slime- no other issues with flat tires. A little tricky for cutting in tight areas, or making tight turns, but then again, it is a field mower. Not a regular mower, with a nice, neat cut- but again, it is a field mower, and does the job. We used it on a field that had not been cut for about 5-10 years. The first time, had to take it slow. To see what I was going through, no big holes, tires, small bears, that type of thing. But once you get it cleared the first time, of all the rough stuff, you can move rally fast through the field. Overall, I am very happy with the product.

I like the machine, but dread making adjustments or repairs. For a "sernior citizen" I have found it to be very heavy and somewhat difficult to attach to the tractor, and very difficult to make adjustments, such as height of cut, and for me nearly impossible to replace blades. I am lucky to have a good, strong neighbor who helps me when I need it.

Over the years I have used other types of pull behind mowers to keep my three acres cleared of brush and high grass with some hillside. It would take me 5 to 6 hours to clear. I decided to purchase the 20PROXL from reviews like this one. When I first got it I couldn't beleive how well built this mower was compared to the last two I owned. I trailered the mower to the property and hooked it up to my ATV.The first thing I noticed was how well balanced it was and easy to pull. The field had grown to 5 foot of brush and grass. This mower ran so well and it cut throught the brush like butter. The next thing I knew it was 4 hours later and I was finished. I was one happy owner. I let a friend of mine use it. He used the offset feature to clear briars and brush. He said that it was the greatest mower he ever used and was thinking about getting one for himself. Because of my personal experince Iam going to purchase other DR products in the future. Additionally, I had to speak with customer service and they were very helpful and took great care of me.

Q.How well does this unit handle rocks? Our pasture has tall weeds, but it also has lots of small to medium size rocks (like 2 to 4 inch in diameter). I can avoid some of them, but there are a lot, so its pretty difficult.

Q.We are looking for an offset mower to mow our pond bank. What is the maximum slope that the DR Field and Brush mower can be operated safely?
A.When using the Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mower with a Lawn Tractor 14 hp to 17 hp and weighing at least 400 lbs, you must remove the lawn deck of the tractor and mow on slopes 5 degrees or less and cut grass knee high or less.

A Lawn Tractor 17 hp or more, weighing at least 500 lbs, you do not have the above limitations and can mow on slopes up to 20 degrees.

A 250 cc ATV and weighing at least 400 lbs will work for mowing on slopes of 5 degrees or less. A 300 cc ATV weighing at least 500 lbs will work mowing on slopes of up to 20 degrees.

A UTV will work well, but you may need to purchase the optional UTV Extension Kit.

Please note, the 10.5 hp (12.5 hp) Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mower is not intended for use on slopes, as it has a splash oil lubrication. Using this model on slopes may deprive the engine of adequate lubrication and damage components.

This is done while the mower is stopped by simply stepping on a lever. The offset feature is also set while the mower is stopped. You would need to remove and set the pins to offset at your desired position. Both adjustments can be performed without the use of tools making it easier to do while out in the field.

Q.Can this be pulled behind a pickup with a modified hitch? If not, why?
A.Hello, We do not recommend pulling the Tow Behind Field and Brush mower behind a pickup truck. It would be unsafe, you would not have a clear line of sight on the machine while in use. Any modification of the unit would void the warranty and return options. This unit can safely be towed behind a lawn tractor, ATV, or a UTV, preventing any harm or damage to the unit.

Q.How will the mower perform if the area is wet especially when it rains. The area is not a swamp.
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Tow Behind Field and Brush Mower.

The 20HP Pro-XL has a lot of power and can handle mowing in wet conditions very well. However, tall grass and weeds will always cut better when they are dry. Wet grass and weeds will tend to lie down much easier making it more difficult for a clean cut.
