Features

Powerful Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the obvious choice for our Field and Brush Mowers. They are easy to start, comfortable to use, and feature a debris management system that protects the engine from whatever you kick up while you’re cutting.

Floating Deck

The deck is suspended from the frame, allowing it to ride up and over high points, minimizing scalping and protecting the drivetrain from damage.

No-Tools Height Adjustment

Choose your mowing height—from 4" to 7.5"—with two easy-turning hand cranks.

Pivoting Blades

Unique swinging blades pivot when hitting an immovable object, to protect the mower’s blade, spindle and engine.

Remote Control

A remote control allows you to engage and disengage the mower blade—right from the driver’s seat of your towing vehicle.

Chain Debris Guard

Similar to the debris shields used on commercial roadside mowers, this guard stops material from flying forward

Mows Outside Wheelbase

The mowing blade extends outside of the wheels—so you can mow right up next to fences, walls, hedgerows and other obstacles without interference.

Big “Brush Bar”

The 2.75” thick steel frame acts as a brush bar...pushing over saplings, brambles, and other vegetation before feeding it under the deck

44” Mulching Deck

The 44” mowing deck is enclosed on 3 sides, so cut material is chopped and re-chopped, leaving windrows behind.

Outrigger Tow Bar

The 2-piece tow bar allows for offsetting the mowing deck to the left or right...or you can mow right behind your tow vehicle.

Mow up to 1.5 acres per hour!

Mowing times will vary with conditions (density of growth and features of terrain), but hooked up to your ATV the DR 16.5 Tow-Behind can clear as much 1.5 acres per hour — while you ride in comfort!

1 year review of the tow behind mower
Posted by: Gerald M. from Arabi, LA on 10/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I’ve had this mower just over a year and there’s some great things and some issues I’ve had with it. First off, if you can drive over it and knock it down with an ATV it will cut whatever you want. This thing has been awesome in clearing fields and old overgrown trails and food plots. I haven’t abused it put have put it through a good test. It has exceeded my expectations in this manner. Secondly, I have had several issues with mine to date. About 3 weeks ago I was mowing a trail when the blade became disengaged. Took the tank and cover off and noticed the spring popped off the pulley. Reinstalled the spring and went back to cutting and this happened 3 more times since that first time. Aggravating to say the least but I guess it prevented any damage to any other parts I suppose. The trail I was cutting had grass about 2 feet tall on it, no stumps or trees. I was cutting this past weekend and smelled fuel coming from the DR and noticed fuel on the deck. Once again took the tank and cover off and noticed the fuel line from the tank where the grommet goes in the tank was leaking. Easy fix! I did the live chat and called DR and was told they don’t sell the grommets and that I would have to bring it to an authorized dealer for warranty work and that the tank would need to be replaced. REALLY? Replace a tank for a 1 part? I was told yes that’s what they do. I don’t have time to bring this mower over an hour away using my trailer to replace a 1 part. Crazy that this is their policy on such an easy fix that even a novice can fix. I’m trying to save my time and their money on warranty work but that’s apparently their solution. I went ahead and purchased 3 grommets for 5 off amazon and will fix it myself. All in all it’s a great mower and can handle just about anything you throw at it. Very impressed over my year of ownership but wish they had a solution to the spring popping off and easier ways to get parts that are quick fix parts.

Mostly great. They need to sell a metal cover for it.

Took deliver a week ago and I’ve put about 8 hours on the unit so far. We purchased this to mow under apple trees in an old, overgrown orchard. I would describe the task as borderline abuse of the equipment. There are numerous unseen obstacles like old prunings, rocks, woodchuck mounds, wooden stakes, etc. additionally, there are many 1”-3” saplings, grape vines, and pricker bushes growing under these trees. This machine has handled all of it. When the unit encounters something it can’t handle it simply shuts down, no damage done so far. The drive belt did come off once. The manual gave excellent directions for fixing it, except that “check drivebelt” isn’t listied in the troubleshooting section as a reason for the blade not engaging. The process was easy due to good product design. I’m sure I’m not the only one using this to mow under trees so I think DR could make some money by offering a perforated metal cover that goes over the whole unit so branches don’t pull out all the exposed wires and tubes on the top of the machine. On my first use, a branch pulled out the oil dipstick causing a fine mist of oil to shoot out of the oil fill hole which covered the entire machine in oil and could have blown the engine if I didn’t notice it. I’m planning on making a cover myself, but it would be nice if I could buy this from the manufacturer. Overall the machine has exceeded our expectations and I highly recommend this product to anyone needing to mow down an overgrown area.

A cutting machine
Posted by: Ronald R. from Newport News, VA on 09/04/2018

After about 5 hours of operation it quit cutting, found that the belt tensioner came disconnected, the tensioner bolt backed out. In inspection there was no type of “lock” on the assembly, In my opinion “lock tite” would take care of the problem. The other problem was the vapor return line broke the nipple at the engine, appears the line is about 2 inches too short. That nipple should be a 90 degree nipple. The customer service department is second to none, hopefully the mower will be ready to roll in the next day or two.

Ive used this mower every weekend for a few months now. Its a good machine. Cuts well except one of the blades kept hanging up last weekend. Also, some of the hardware keeps falling off. Especially the height adjustment handles. Worst part is it has 1/2-10 nuts Why I will be calling customer service to work on these issues. Remember to mount the remote blade engage switch. Otherwise, I would recommend this machine so far.

Cheap Battery Hookup
Posted by: Susan H. from Fairbanks, AK on 06/26/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
Love using the mower, does the job that I expected it to do. Bought this last year and when I took it out to use this year, the battery would not start the mower. When I put the mower away last fall, I took the battery out and put it in warm storage. Put a full charge on the battery and still would not start the engine. The warranty on the battery is a year and I am just over the year period, could not get it replaced. Have to buy a new battery and now will have to rewire the battery hookup as the hookup is two small clips and I am not able to find a similar replacement battery. Not something I thought about when putting so much money into the machine. DR could have thought this out a bit better. No wonder they only warranty the battery for a year. If you look at the photo of the key start, you can just see the battery on the right edge of the photo. The green wire is the battery connection for the negative to a little clip on the battery. Also had the muffler cover fall off on the second use due to bad welds. Other that than it's a monster of a machine.

I recently purchased the PRO-44t brush mower and I am very pleased. I got it at the end of the season and with my property having area of dry grass and rocks I chose not to use it that area. I did however have an area with very few rocks and it just ate through the tall grass and brush like a hot knife through butter. I look forward to using it come next spring when I wont need to worry about sparks from the rocky area of my property. Great product

I have five hours on this machine now and not entirely pleased with it. Grass continually gets stuck around caster wheels and grease zerks were loose when the machine arrived on the caster wheels, and thus one has already fallen out. Not liking the way it turns in corners and does not back up where you want it. Lots of power and easy to operate with starting and engaging mower blades.

Great mower but offset has issues
Posted by: Ben C. from Hot springs, AR on 05/24/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I am pulling this with a Polaris Ranger. I have the offset maxed out to the left so I can easily look out the drivers side to check the mower as I am mowing. There are no specific cautions in the owners manual regarding the offset other than how to change it from left to right offset. As I make turns to the left the mower tends to stay inside my turning radius and easily seen. However, when turning right the mower goes completely out of view. As I have the offset adjusted to the left there apparently is a limitation to how far you can turn to the right. One the first day of use I apparently exceeded the right turn radius and the end of the pin that attaches the tow bar to the mower bent 90 degrees and the retaining clip looked like a bent clothes hanger. Additionally one side of the two ears of the offset adjustment that hold the tow bar to the mower was bent at a 90 degree angle and the tow bar was hanging off the mower. I had to get a cutoff tool to cut the pin in order to remove the tow bar. Even one of the ears welded to the mower frame was bent. I had to use a sledge hammer to straighten it. Now I will have to buy a new piece that attaches the tow bar to the mower. For such a rugged piece of equipment this is the only area that seems flimsy. So be sure not to make sharp turns, especially to the side opposite your offset.

I really like the new DR Field and Brush mower. I had the old version of the Field and Brush mower and I like the new one even better. The new version trails behind my Grizzly ATV much better. I am less likely to hit a tree due to the wheels being in the back and front instead of the sides. Great design!

So far we are very pleased with this mower. Able to cut through heavy brush without any loss of power on the engine. Easy to pull with my UTV. Only complaint is that it is nearly impossible to backup when it is connected in the offset position. Forward only in this position. Pleased with the staff response in assisting me with getting the full discount on the price.

Brush Mower Review
Posted by: Louis N. from Crossville, TN on 05/14/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
Nice piece of equipment, seems to work well, and tows easily. Only two issues so far: a screw that sheared off on the ignition switch panel, easy fix there seems to be a tendency for grass to accumulate on top of the fan housing clogging the air intake. That requires an occasion stop to clean it off. DR customer service is excellent by the way. I would definitely recommend a trailer to pick up the machine, it would have fit in our pickup bed, but it would have been a challenge to get it on the ground. Heavy and it ships in one piece.

Okay but not great
Posted by: Christopher C. from AUSTIN, TX on 04/20/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 2.00 star rating
I purchased this mower about a year and a half ago and, and to be honest, I’ve had a lot of problems. The unit has a good overall design, but in my opinion, it suffers from several engineering problems. The issues I’ve observed include, failing pulley tensioner, cracks in deck along welded areas, cracks developing in engine mounting assembly, battery always drains after several hours of use rendering it useless, gas tank restraining straps breaking, rear wheel forks bend backwards, bolts loosening due to vibration, and the belt comes off frequently… to name a few. The Briggs engine has been good for me and always starts if the battery is charged. After replacing parts numerous times through the extended warranty, I finally took matters into my own hands and reengineered several problematic areas. I reinforced some of the sheet metal around the engine mount and welded on thicker metal, which seems to have eliminated stress fractures on the engine mount. Some bolts were constantly loosening and for those I purchased longer bolts and mounted them using nylon lock nuts. I replaced the PTO clutch with an Xtreme aftermarket version and added an additional spring on the replaced pulley tensioner, both of which greatly improve performance and reliability. As a result the belt no longer comes off. I welded some steel bracing on the rear wheel forks to help keep the wheels true and eliminated the issue of stress fractures. I removed the height adjustment levers and went to galvanized carriage bolts with large washers and double hex nuts. Lastly, I replaced the gas tank with a 10x12 Center Spun Aluminum gas tank and replaced the battery with a 400 AMP standard mower battery, mounted on two hot rolled steel angle bars that I bolted across the top of the frame. Moving the fuel tank and battery off the mower deck reduces vibration absorbed by those items and keeps them cooler because they are farther away from the exhaust. Overall, I suspect that my 20 acre Central Texas property might be a bit too much for this mower, but now that most of the major issues are sorted, it seems to be doing well knock on wood. I know that DR has made improvements since I originally purchased the unit, for instance the replacement pulley tensioner and mower deck both had improvements, however I think more needs to be done to make this so/so mower a great mower. IMO.

Buy a goat
Posted by: James S. from Sedro-Woolley, WA on 10/02/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
If you are need of a machine to cut fields with anything more than grass, I would suggest getting a goat. These cutters are about as fickle as the come. We have worked out all the bugs and its working okay now, but first off the belt slips off constantly. You literally will have to open this POS up 20 times before you figure out you will need to get a bushing milled to fit a bolt without threads so that the crimping bolt don't turn itself out of welded nut every twenty minutes. The engine is good, but the rest of it is not. Also I suggest getting a plexiglass shield to attach to the back of what machine you use to pull it to avoid the concussion that WILL happen. Either that or the 6 inch laceration I received across my lower back.

I uncrated the new 16.5 HP Brush Mower and immediately loaded it on to the trailer to give it the "acid test" at the duck hunting impoundment. 8' cattails were nothing for this machine. That night I put the 2 year old 10.5 HP Brush Mower on Craig's List and it sold the next day. I upgraded because I like the new narrow design, more HP and electric start. I can now put both my 4 wheeler and the DR on my 2 place snowmobile trailer and I am ready to roll. Very pleased with the new design. Another excellent DR Product.

Fallow after two years of no-till soybeans the field grew head high horsetail, foxtail grass and wild flowers. We had plenty of rain and the weeds thrived in spite of no soil disturbance. The DR towed mower did a beautiful job of clearing the field for frost seeding this coming winter with clover/ chicory mix.

I have had a chance to use my new Pro-44 Tow Behind Mower twice since receiving it. The first time was on a one acre horse pasture with tall weeds and grass. The mower worked better than I had anticipated. I tried pulling it with a 14 hp riding mower which was a little under powered for the small hill I had to negotiate. The second time a few days later I used a bigger riding mower with a 17 hp engine on a different section of pasture which was about two acres in size. The bigger mower was enough to handle pulling the tow behind mower and did an excellent job! I'm very happy with my purchase and have used a DR walk behind mower for over twenty years. Thanks for making a quality product!

Mower works great. Would be helpful for instructions to ensure gas tank filled to a relatively full level. My mower would not start after I added, what I thought was, plenty of gas. After talking to DR, I still couldn't get it started. After (a lot) of experimentation, I realized the gas line comes out of the tank at a point that requires quite a bit of fuel to be in the tank.

Beware deck height
Posted by: John R. from CEDAR GROVE, NC on 06/13/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
The first day I got the mower, I used it to cut 2 acres of high grass and it did a great job. It was easy to use and left a surprisingly smooth cut. I am giving 3 stars because the height adjust feature needs serious re-engineering. I raised it up to full height to cut the field and then attempted to lower it later in the day. Apparently, there is nothing to keep the operator from raising the height beyond its limit so the deck froze in the highest position. There was so much pressure on the lag screw that holds the deck up that minimal pressure from me in trying to figure out what was wrong caused the bolt to sheer off completely. DR tech support was great about helping out and getting the mower to a dealer for repair but this problem is ridiculous and should never have happened. Now I am without the mower for a month. If DR finds a retro-fit for this problem, I would give 5 stars.

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I purchased this machine to mow about 10 acres of old hay fields. There is very little brush but some tag alder. I pull it with a 2008 Honda 420cc Rancher. This machine does a great job. Of course the cut is not yard perfect but it is better than I expected and I am completely satisfied with it. Although I gave it 5 stars, there are a couple of issues I do have. The first is the engine. Powerful and runs great except after filling the tank it begins missing. I remove the gas cap and replace it and the mower runs perfect again. Acts like it is air locked but not sure. I have been in touch with DR and they are taking this seriously. The second issue is the remote. The directions say mount it to your vehicle with wire ties or something similar. If you do that, then you either need to remove it or unplug the cord anytime you want to detach the mower from your vehicle. The plugs are not very robust. Just small automotive type plug ins that I expect to have issues with. I feel the remote cable and box could have been designed to be much more rugged and user friendly. Also, where the cable attaches to the machine, there should be an enclosed box to protect the wires and cable connector. It looks like they could easily be damaged in brush. Despite these two concerns, I feel this mower is a great product and an overall sturdy one. I am very happy with this purchase. it does what it claims it can do. I can easily cut at 5 mph, the recommended top speed. I would recommend this product to others.

From pickup at depot to the first start going well. Hit overgrown trails four foot high weeds and grasses. The mower marched thru it no problem, we pull it behind a Polaris xp900,doesn't even know its there, offset ability really helpful. My only concern is the extension electrical connections for the blade engagement, they are not as rugged as the rest of this machine,we need ed d electrical tape to assure stable connection as one of the clips was weak and not holding securely. Having said that I will rate this reconditioned machine 4.5 stars.Again am quite pleased with unit and would recommend it to any one looking for a machine to handle tuff trail or general heavy mowing,we have an extensive trail system on a 80 acre woods. Rock on team DR from depot, to sales, and, and service team. I am a pleased owner.

Very dissatisfied with new 44" Tow Behind Field and Brush. After 6 hours had to return to dealer because Blade wouldn't engage. Spring had broken. Now 4 hours later Blade won't engage again. Taking to Dealer tomorrow. Have spent more time towing to and from Dealer for repair than mowing.

Easy to unpack and ready for work. Pulled with an Artic Cat 500 automatic. I groom and cut 30 Acres of hilly, rocky, rutted, weeds and brush. Over the past month I have put this machine through some mean tasks that my riding lawn tractor could not even attempt. In fact my lawn tractor was destroyed by this work. The D.R slayed my property. We are talking some heavy duty pounding through ruts, rainy muck, over rocks and stumps that have stopped the motor, sideswiping rocks and trees and lurching it out of steep inclines. You would think the blades would have nicks and dents and be bent right? Wrong! I have hit and slammed into many rocks and there are no nicks in my blade! Holy crap! We are talking running over and into granite boulders and oak stumps. No more sharpening blades every time I mow. My central California property demands professional-grade equipment that can withstand an intense beating. This machine has proven itself during the first month. I realize that is not a lot of time but the engine and the mower shows quality and durability. The rate at which you can mow is drastically faster then a riding lawn tractor. Perhaps 5 times faster. Another words I can accomplish one hour of work on the DR compared to 5 hours work on a 42" riding lawn mower. This means that my engine runs one fifth the time compared to my dead lawn tractor. The transmission in my quad is better suited for this type of work compared to a lawn tractor. There is just no comparison. The amount and type of work I can do with speed is drastically improved. It's a much more comfortable ride also. The pin does not come out of the Quad because I have a big pin. The wheel assembly is heavy duty and can withstand a lot of abuse thank goodness. The deck is thick guage metal. The swing blades are heaven sent. Start mowing with it behind you on the edges of your area. Switch to the offset position and complete your job. Pulling the mower in the offset position is easier and better. Put the remote in your lap. Pamper the engine with Lucas Oil gasoline additive. For me, I am done fooling around with equipment that cannot get the job done in a first-rate manner. I invested in the DR for what I believe will be a decade or more of efficient work without ongoing problems. I believe this investment was an excellent move on my part. "Get the job done fast and better and stop foolin around with inferior crap". I hope this is helpful to my buds out there. Regards, Jonathan D.

I have used the DR 17.5 hp Kawasaki/44" tow behind for 7 years .The 2 wheel design had its faults and I am looking forward to delivery of my new 20hp/4 wheel design.I totally abused my first machine which is still cutting 4' grass/weeds after 7 years , just tired of changing the belt every couple of months . I cleared my 5 acres with it and maintain a mango/lychee orchard on Maui . if you have been here you know what elephant grass is , it's like sugar cane , gets 6' tall and the mower goes right through it.I have gone over basketball size rocks and the mower just takes a beating and keeps on singing. After a couple years I had battery problems but taking off the positive cable when not in use cures that . i never use the offset so I bolted my tongue down/ simple fix.Like the new chain guard . Dr builds a tough machine for sure. Kurt

The only fault I have with my DR is, When mowing in tall grass a lot of the cut grass goes out the front of the mower and piles up on top of the deck and motor. Had to stop several times to clean it off. Besides that it is a work horse.

Driver showed up in a semi and trailer, couldn't get down my drive and the trailer didn't have a lift on the back so guess what, no way to get the mower off the trailer. I did finally get the mower off the trailer...not the way it was intended to be off loaded but it worked. But yes the mower is great!

Performance Over the Years
Posted by: susan l. from raymond, CA on 03/21/2015
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I've used my tow behind, electric start for 4 seasons now, partnering it with my Polaris XP UTV. These two are a great combo for mowing. My terrain is rutted and has some serious dips, dirt, valleys and some small rocks, gravel, and turned up areas from wild boar, etc. I've got every type of ugly weed and long grass that you can imagine--thick and heavy in the spring. I love the mower because it is very sturdy and resilient with these conditions in play. Over the years, I've had to replace the battery a couple of times, due to my not maintaining it during off season. Easy to replace. Other issues have been with the pull-up lever and rod and lock for the offset feature. The darn thing does not seat deep into it's receptacle for it to stay in place. I've felt something off and have looked back only to see the entire unit wagging back and forth because the locking mechanism had come out of the hole and the locking rod failed. So now I have to place a 4x4 inch block of wood on each side of the lock to keep it from doing this. Works, but I should probably find someone to drill the receptacle for the locking rod a little deeper. I called DR and they had no answer for me on it, so the blocks work for now. One last thing that came off was the top flip top for the air filter compartment. It failed at the hinges which are plastic and I had to order a new one to put on. But the rest of this unit is solid and sturdy and you can't complain about it. It does a great job on the heavy stuff, but because it mows high, at 4" you don't get a mower type clean cut, and if you cut too early when the grass is wetter, it does not cut well. Wait until later spring and when the grass is starting to turn and you will love the cut. Also, the mechanism for lowering and moving the cut height up and down is almost impossible for a woman to do on her own. Too heavy. But once you get it where you want it, you won't probably need to change it.

Great for brush. Not a pasture mower
Posted by: TimSig220 from Florida on 08/08/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
Bought this unit because I have pasture/ rough areas that are a little too challenging for a finish mower so I went with the DR Tow mower with the 15hp motor. Arrived on time, easy to assemble the tow bar and control box. Had it running in 30 min or so. I live in Florida, so this was great on the small Palmetto brush areas, vines and saplings. Makes short work of pine cones as well. It did not mow the Bahia - type pasture grass as well as I wanted it to, despite several leveling efforts combined with height adjustments. Varying the tow speed didn't work either. I returned the machine because I believe I bought the wrong tool for the job. The tool was made of robust materials, and built to last. It so seemed to be very fuel efficient. Although I returned mine, I recommend this for anyone who has BRUSH to cut. Hope this was informative. I called DR tech support for help prior to returning it , they were helpful. I can only recommend that DR develops a finish cut machine like this, or better yet, an interchangeable system that accommodate both brush and finish cuts.... Maybe a blade change ?

So far very impressive

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
The machine is heavy duty and performs as advertised. It is a recent purchase and I only have used it for a few days (8 hrs. total); however, so far so good. The steel wheel/tire guards are great. I would think that competitor products that lack these guards would be very difficult to use, especially if mowing fence lines and around trees. Customer service was fantastic and the machine was delivered in a timely manner despite my remote location. My only complaint would be that a few quarts of oil should be part of the package and the hardware necessary to attach the ground wire on the battery should be included. The instructions assured me that the hardware was present, but unfortunately it must have been forgotten or lost in transit. These drawbacks necessitated a trip to the hardware store and a trip to a tractor supply store. Small inconveniences are significant when you're paying a premium.

Stalls Out in Constantly in High Pasture Grass
Posted by: LovesPintos from Louisiana on 08/06/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 1.00 star rating
We've had the walk behind mower for several years and it works like a champ. My husband bought this to tow with my small subcompact tractor to rough mow our 8 acre pasture. First off, this will not mow 4 ft high grass as advertised or mow 2 acres in 1 hour. This machine stalls out constantly in tall grass. I can maybe mow 1/2 acre in two hours. I have to constantly look behind me to see if it's still cutting. It will easily cut saplings...if it hasn't stalled out. It has idled roughly since we bought it. When I turn on the blades, the machine shakes so hard it shakes my tractor. This mower has less than 10 hours on it, because I dread using it. If I could send it back I would!

This machine is a BEAST will power through most all field brush to include 2-3 inch sapling. You will not be disappointed. It is a field mower made a great quality gauge steel.

This mower is tough! I've used it three times on 5 acres of grass and brush and it just chews it up and spits it out! I really couldn't be happier. If I could change one thing, it would be to make it so you can easily disconnect the power cable from the towing arm so that the towing arm can be completely removed from the mower. This would make it much easier to store.

Mower works great. As the other reviewers stated if you have a UTV (Polaris RZR) you will need to get the extension kit. I think it would be appropriate if the mower stated that the Kohler engine is only jetted to 4000 feet. I live in Colorado. The property we just purchased is at 8800 feet. I purchased the high altitude jet kit and installed it in the engine. The jet is pressed in, inside the carburetor. It?s a little tricky getting the old one out. The new one was not the difficult to install. I?m still waiting for my refund for the purchase of the high altitude kit. If you live above 4000 feet you might want to ask Dr Power if they could install the jet before you purchase it.

Just got it to mow 5 acres of grass 2 feet high which took me 3 hours. With my JD L140 rider mower it took me 10 hours. It does a pretty good job but will need two passes. The wheels are wide so it lays down the grass and in about a week you see rolls of un-cut grass. The 15 HP unit did stall a few times, good thing I didn't buy the smaller unit. The full tank lasted about 2 hour before re-fueling. You will need a 4 wheel drive unit to pull it through high grass, wet grass and inclines.

A real workhorse

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
The first one I received would not start, but the customer service team worked with me to get a replacement quickly. The second performed like a champ. I used it to cut seriously overgrown fields full of saplings and clumps of balckberry over 5 feet high. The machine took it down smoothly. It is very heavy, which helps with taking down the heavy stuff, but you need help unloading it. The sales guy told me it would fit in a pickup truck, but I would use a trailer instead if you have to pick it up. My only gripe is that the standard issue remote control cable is too short for a utility vehicle. I would recommend that DR offer the machine with either instead of making you pay more for a longer cable.

I have owned this unit for a few years and boy has it done he job. It is easy to hook up, easy to use and cuts extremely well. It has been virtually problem free. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone. The one problem I have had is that after a while the release pin, to allow you to pivot the hitch to offset mow, becomes very hard to pull up and push down. A little oil doesn't help either.

Ask a Question for This Product
Sort By:
Q.How many blade(s) are on the 16.5 HP Pro Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mower and what size are they? What is the drive method of the blades? Thanks.
A.The Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mowers have two Pro-Tek swinging blades. The blades are .25" thick by 16-1/2" long hardened steel that mount to a blade carrier under the center of the mowing deck. The blades are belt driven and pivot when they hit an immovable object which protects the blade spindle and the engine from any damage.

Q.How long is the cable for the remote control? I have a Polaris Ranger 6X6, is the cable long enough to reach the seat? Also, can you raise and lower the cutting height using the remote control or must this be done manually?
A.The standard remote cable on the Tow-Behind Field and Brush mower is 5'. For a UTV, you would need the cable extension. This adds an additional 3.5' to the cable, making it long enough for use with a UTV.
The remote is capable of turning on and shutting off the machine, controlling the engine throttle and engaging/disengaging the blades. The cutting height can be easily adjusted with the Step and Mow height adjuster. You simply step on the lever positioned on the side of the machine and choose which height you would like to mow at. This foot activated adjustment is very easy to use with no tools required.

Q.Does the 16.5 hp mower charge the battery
A.If you operate the engine for at least 45 minutes, it will maintain proper battery charge. If you do not use the machine for at least 45 minutes at a time, the battery may need to be periodically charged. Always charge the battery every 4 to 6 weeks when not in use.

We offer a 12-Volt Trickle Charger which is perfect for DR Power Equipment, tractors, autos, boats and more. It is a simple solution to the challenge of keeping any 12-volt battery optimally powered when not in use. The Trickle Charger can be viewed and/or ordered at the following web address:

Q.I have to mow the side of a dam. I can not do this completely with a riding mower, will the 16.5 hp or 20 hp tow-behind brush mower work for this application? Thanks, Jim
A.Our 16.5 HP Pro and 20 HP Pro-XL Tow Behind Field and Brush Mowers can be towed with a Lawn Tractor, ATV or UTV.

A Lawn Tractor with a horsepower between 14 HP and 17 HP and weighing at least 400 lbs, the lawn deck should be removed and one can safely mow on slopes 5 degrees or less and cut grass knee high or less.

A Lawn Tractor with 17 HP or more and weighing at least 500 lbs, you do not have the above limitations and can mow on slopes up to 20 degrees.

A 250 cc ATV weighing at least 400 lbs will allow you to mow on slopes of 5 degrees or less.

A 300 cc ATV weighing at least 500 lbs will work for mowing on slopes of up to 20 degrees.

A UTV works very well, but you will need to purchase the UTV Control Extension Kit.

If you have more questions, please feel free to contact our Sales Team at Toll Free 1-888-550-0062 and a Sales Representative will be happy to help you.

Q.Will this Brush Mower work with a 26 hp garden tractor?
A.We recommend a few types of Tow Vehicles for the Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mower. The Tow Vehicle may be either 2 or 4 wheel drive. Recommended vehicles are: ATV, Lawn/Garden Tractor (17 HP and above and weighing at least 500 pounds), Riding Lawn Mower (14 HP and above and weighing at least 400 pounds), Utility Vehicle and Compact or Sub-Compact Tractors. Riding Lawn Mowers will work best as a Tow Vehicle with their cutting deck removed.

Q.How far can it be offset, and can it be offset on a tilt? Like mowing a dam from a flat road.
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The Dr Tow Behind Field and Brush Mower has 5 different towing positions and can be offset up to 46 inches from center line to either side. It will handle slopes up to 20 degrees, either up or down on both sides as well. It uses a pin hitch which allows you to mow the slopes while keeping the tow vehicle on a flat road.

I think you would be very pleased with their performance. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions and thank you for the inquiry. fc

Q.Are there replacement blades that are designed to cut just grass?
A.The blades for the Field and Brush mowers are intended for cutting grass, weeds, saplings and most other vegetation. There is not a specific blade just for grass. While cutting grass with the multipurpose blade it will give it a rough cut from 4-7.5" with the tow-behind model. If you are looking to mow your lawn with a brush mower, our walk-behind models do have a 42" finishing mower option.

Q.Will my Honda 420cc Rancher pull this on steep hills?
A.A 250 cc ATV (or greater) that is also 400 LBS (or greater) will work to tow around a Tow-Behind DR Field & Brush Mower on slopes of 5 degrees or less.

If the towing vehicle has a much higher cc and is 500 LBS (or greater), then the Tow-Behind DR Field & Brush Mower can be safely used on slopes up to 20 degrees.

The 16.5 HP tow-behind mower is equipped with a 2-1/2 gallon fuel tank that will operate the mower for up to 2-1/2 hours without needing a refill. It also comes with a full pressure pump with an oil filter and a fuel pump and fuel filter.

Q.My land is hilly sloping. Will my john deere utv 550 handle a tow-behind brush mower?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The DR 16.5 hp Tow Behind Field and Brush Mower weighs 442 lbs. You will need to check the towing capacity of your John Deere UTV. The Field and Brush Mower can handle slopes up to a 20 degree pitch. Any slope steeper than 20 degrees may effect the engine lubrication.

The 16.5 model will handle up to 4 foot tall grass, 8 foot tall weeds and brush and 1.5 inch thick saplings.

Please contact us if you have further questions. PL

Q.how well will it do ditches an steep slopes ??? I have a JD 430 lawn tractor to pull it
A.Thank you for contacting us regarding the Tow-Behind Field and Brush Mower.

We do not recommend using any of our machines on slopes that exceed a 20-degree grade. This is to protect the machine as well as the user.

Q.Can I use this with an Allis Chalmers WD farm tractor?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Tow Behind 16.5 Field and Brush Mower.

The Tow Behind Field and Brush Mowers use a pin hitch. The tow arm has 3 different positions it can be set at that will allow you to reach out up to 68" from the center of the tractor ( or from where the mowers hitch is attached) to the outside cutting edge.
