Features
Self-Feeding

Self-Feeding Action

A large vertically oriented hopper, a precisely-angled heavy-duty chipping knife, and a powerful air channel work together to pull branches into the chipping hopper and blast wood chips out the discharge. Most materials will self-feed, so once you drop a branch in your free to get the next one. No force feeding required!

Hopper

Oversized Chipping Hopper

The big opening for branches (17” x 27") accepts 4.75” branches with little or no trimming of side branches.

Towing

Road Towing

Add the optional road tow package and you can easily tow your Chipper on roads at speeds up to 45mph. Please note: If you purchase the optional road tow package with your machine it will be factory installed and the standard pin hitch will not be included.

Engine

Briggs and Stratton OHV Engine

The legendary power, performance and durability of Briggs & Stratton® engines make them the only ones we use on our DR Chippers. The 16.5 FPT Self-Feeding Chipper uses a durable 420cc Overhead Valve engine with your choice of manual- or electric-start. It features a debris management system that protects the engine from whatever you kick up while you’re chipping and shredding.

Engine

Heavy-Duty Flywheel

The key to efficient wood chipping is the rotating mass created by the flywheel on which the chipper knife is mounted. The 16.5 Self-Feeding model features a 17.75” diameter flywheel that’s ⅝” thick and weighs a hefty 50 pounds. It spins at 128 mph and takes an amazing 40 “bites” per second!

Chipper Knife

Pro-Spec™ Chipper Knife

Made of high-carbon/high-chromium forged alloy tool steel, our knives hold an edge longer than those on "bargain" chippers.. Still, as with any cutting tool, keeping a sharp edge is important for maintaining peak performance. We recommend keeping an extra on hand so you can minimize downtime.

I love this machine! Before it arrived I was concerned it wouldn't be sturdy enough for all the work that I needed to do.I was wrong! The electric start makes starting a breeze. It is well built and strong. It doesn't move an inch. With the extension chute Im able to blow the chips into the back of my pickup with ease. With bigger branches you do have to remove the brushy ends at times or it wont feed and you may have to rotate the branches a bit to feed right but thats to be expected. It takes branches up to 4.75 well but occasionaly the motor bogs down a bit if overloaded but honestly that was my fault as I overloaded the hopper. Overall Id give this machine a big thumbs up!

When I received the DR 16.5 wood chipper it came on a wooden skid and was very well packaged. Some assembly was required all of which lined up perfectly and bolted together for a very solid unit. I'm impressed with the quality of metal used. After adding oil and two pulls of the rope the unit came alive. This unit means business - I ran a number of branches through it and it never slowed down. I really like the self feeding feature. I figured I would need to cut the branched smaller to get them through however that wasn't the case. The unit grabbed the branch and pulled it right in. looks like I'm in for a lot of fun and a stock pile of wood chips.

I recently purchased another brand of "Commercial" chipper. Thank goodness they stood by their "30 day" return policy, although they were reluctant. Their chipper did chip okay, but it was impossible to tow, and better functioned as a plow. The DR chipper was a bigger investment, but does what it says it will do. I am clearing paths and mulching trails, fewer burn piles, and less pollution. Thanks DR!

A Super Beaver!

The 16.5 is everything and more than advertised. Powerful, well built, strong weldments, no flat wheels, huge hopper, a very fast and strong self feed, and many other positives. It is loud, so use your ear plugs and eye wear. The chips are large enough to use in our driveway and pack themselves. We recommend this chipper to all who need year 'round chips. We do not chip limbs over 3 1/2 inches, using the larger diameter limbs for grilling and our fireplace. Easy start but let it idle fast for a few minutes for warm up then slowly increase to full speed. We looked at many chipper/shredder at the box stores; none can compare to the DR. You get what you pay for; buy a cheap chipper and pay later for repairs... Gotta go make some chips, so enjoy the holidays! Jackie and Fran, Ocala, Fl

I must say this thing does what the manufacturer says it will do. I recently had to clean up my yard after Hurricane Irma. We have water oaks and they dropped a lot of branches. Some were 4+ inches in diameter and 4 to 5 feet long. This DR Chipper ate them up like corn flakes and spit them out. I am very pleased with its performance.

Works great, Don't know what the reason why you cant put in the owners manual the exact amount of oil it takes when new is beyond me, the fill tube takes forever to clear out, and to get the right amount of oil in the motor is a pain. also the manual says put 1/2 of the oil in it. you need to say what amount to put in. Like it takes so much. This is the only piece of equipt. I have seen that don't give a capacity for the oil, at least I could,nt find it.

Chips Ahoy

I have used my 16.5 wood chipper 3 times since I assembled it. I would have used it more often, but it chipped all of the piles of limbs I had too quickly. Now I have to canvas neighbors to see if they have anything I can chip. On my three piles, it made small piles of chips out of large piles of branches in short order. It has started on the first pull every time I have started it. It works as advertised and I cannot say enough good about the machine. If I could complain about anything, it would be the instructions for the small about of assembly that is required could be written a little clearer. I love my DR chipper.

Have been looking for a wood chipper for a while. Did some homework on the internet looking for the best I could buy for the money. Came across DR and looked it over closely. Looked at the different models for our needs and read the reviews then decided on the 16.5 model. Shipping was a breeze and the instructions to put together were straight forward. Filled it with gas and oil and it started on the first pull! I was so impressed with this machine. It just chewed through all the limbs and branches we gave it. I would highly recommend this chipper from DR. It is amazing!

My new BFF!

This machine has exceeded my expectations thus far! I have only had this chipper for about two weeks however it has been worked since day one. I was initially concerned that I had over-bought this machine (something I tend to do quite often). That concerned was put to rest immediately when I realized more is definitely better when it comes to chippers! If you can afford to go bigger, most definitely do so as you will most likely find yourself needing the extra grunt at some point! I also recommend purchasing the extra warranty as you will work this machine quite hard and the extra piece of mind is nice to have just in case. Another thing to remember is to be realistic with your expectations. The 16.5 model will definitely "eat" what it's advertised to "eat" but not more. If you're testing the capacity by feeding big branches, take your time and let the blades do the work...no need to force. Lastly, it does ok with green leaves and vines but don't expect too much as it's a chipper and not a shredder. To be honest, it does pretty well with leaves but the machine really shines on 3" branches! Best of luck and remember, if you're even thinking about going up the next model, stop thinking and just pull the trigger. You'll be happier in the end!

16.5 Wood Chipper
Posted by: Rick T. from GEORGETOWN, TX on 08/18/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I have a yard just over 1 acre and with 40 large live oak trees and lots of branches to cut and chip up. I only have 6.5 hours on my wood chipper (I did the oil change at 5 hours) and so far the DR Chipper has been excellent. The small branches with lots of leaves have a hard time as they seem to gather at the bottom of the hopper, but when I run another larger branch into the hopper the larger branch pulls the smaller branches and leaves into the cutting blade and it clears itself. One design change would be to add a rubber bumper to the bottom of Ref# 34, the Guard, Belt, Inner. This Guard Plate tends to vibrate and make a very noisy metallic banging sound when the engine comes up to speed. No problem with the operational design of this Guard, I just don't like to hear it vibrate and hit the Belt Guard Ref# 16. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase of this DR 16.5 Wood Chipper.

I've had my 16.5 Self-Feeding (electric Start) for about 2 months now. I've already had to sharpen the blade once, so I would recommend getting a second blade at time of purchase. However, we've got a 10' dia. X 10' high pile of settled wood chips to show for it that's currently steaming away. The Self-Feeder works fairly well, you'll want to check/adjust the gap with every sharpening with the gap indicator that's included, otherwise it won't work so well. The Electric start is wonderful and no issues with it as of yet. Unit was delivered in a crate and took about 30 minutes to put together. Thrown everything in it up to about 4" and right about there is where the engine is peaking, above that and the engine will start to bog down a bit. It'll do it, you just have to help it along and slow down the feed. Overall I'm very happy with it.

I have my 16.5 DR chipper for 3 years of severe use on my 10 acres lot and not a single trouble after over 100 hours. However, since it's a very hard working machine, good maintenance is a "MUST" and it is very important to follow instructions of operator manual I also ordered a spare knife and have them sharpened by pro machine shop.

Expected better from DR

Had exactly the same issue as... Lee S. from West plains, MO on 02/05/2017 … from the get go my chipper would bog down very quickly and clog up if anything other than small (1.5” dia. ) were fed into it. Several calls to DR were of little help I was told I was feeding the material too fast ( it is a self feeding chipper ?). and within two weeks of minor usage the clutch had burned out. Fixed at a local shop under warranty I tried again with pretty much the same results. Finally removed the extended chute and discovered that , from the factory, one of two flanges that protruded from the chute into the machines discharge housing was bent inward and had been causing the clogs. After straightening the flange the chipper ran pretty much as it was supposed to. Having owned an original DR 18hp with top discharge for over 10 years I have several complaints with this unit. 1. While it is listed as a 16.5 that is not indicative of its HP. Briggs some time ago started to rate its engines in torque rather than HP ergo the 16.5 is closer to 11 or 12 HP. Somewhat deceptive IMHO. 2. This unit without the road tow package is very unstable and easily upset on a side hill (of which I have many.) The solution was to replace the stock axle with one 3ft in length to provide a wider wheelbase. 3. 4.75” capacity? Not the one I have. Anything over 3” requires hanging on to the branch and pulling it back when the machine slows down. Overall the machine does what I need it to do. I burn firewood so anything over 3” goes on the woodpile anyway.

Solid Chipper
Posted by: John H. from Rice Lake, MN on 04/10/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
The 16.5 DR Chipper is a solid unit. I purchased mine from a local dealer on sale. The good about it is that it has plenty of power to chip 2"-3" branches easily. It will chip 3.75" but it takes more time to finesse the branches in the chute. The electric start is nice, as is the tow hitch. I recommend both those options. All said, it is a vast improvement over the cheap chipper shredders one finds at big box outlets. Know this though, like any piece of equipment it requires maintenance. The chipper knife and cutting face need to be monitored, DR recommends having a spare chipping knife and I agree, even though the knife is not cheap. Also, it is a hassle to get at these items. One needs to remove copious amounts of bolts and shrouds to access the knife and cutting face (and belt, clutch etc.). The chute is a hassle to remove as well and is a two person job. I recommend you fill your tires with Slime or another anti-flat compound right when you get it home. If you lose a tire on game day, you wish you had. Be sure the feed chute is CLEAN before you start the engine. If you have a chunk of wood lodged in there it could get stuck and damage the belt and clutch. The factory discharge chute works but is far from ideal. The long neck accessory chute is the way to go but it is very expensive. In closing, I have used mine a great deal and will continue to. Be good to the machine and it should be good to you.

On the 6th hour of minor yard use chipping 1-2 inch dead limbs, the metal ripped on both side of the lip that the chute sits on which resulted in welding coming lose. Very thin metal. My old Troybilt 10 hp never ripped the metal afters 10 years of use. I don't recommend for 3,000 wasted dollars.

I am at my wits end with this unit. I have had it a few months but only have No more than six hours on it. It seems like well built machine but every time I ty to use it it clogs up at the base of the extended shoot, fills the chipper cavity and grinds the wheel to a halt. Today I had to pull the extended shoot three times to unclog it before I called it quits. I returned it to my place of purchase once already for a look and it keeps clogging. I called customer service who was very friendly but the fix did not help. I had better results with a little Troy built I rented before I purchased this unit. I need this to work but at this point it is not worth it and will call to see about How I can return this for a refund.

I have 20 acres of brush and woods and this chipper has been so much help along with my chainsaw I have a team. The chipper does clog at times but it is very easy to clear but you should always wear gloves. I received the chipper with a flat tire but customer service sent me out one within one week. If I had to have any con's it would be the tires made in China and not very good. I installed a set I bought at Home Depot and now am a happy camper. I would buy this again without hesitation but I recommend the electric start which I just love for moving the chipper around the woods.

I am almost at the 5 hour mark and my first oil change. So far the chipper has performed well. Some of my branches have so many smaller branches that it is easy for them to get stuck as they go down the chute. So I have to cut the brush into straighter pieces. I have mounted a tow coupler to the tow hitch bar so I can move the chipper easily to other locations. I expect to get many years of work from this machine.

I would rate this 5 starts but... 1) A tire was flat when I received the chipper due to improper packaging. The machine was located too close to the wooden siding and the wood rubbed a hole in the sidewall tire during shipment. 2) Some of the hardware was missing (specifically the fasteners needed to connect the battery terminal) as the bag was not closed when it was put in the box with the chipper for shipping. 3) The assembly instructions could be clearer. I had to use the parts schematic to assemble the tow bar properly. Good note is customer service sent was was missing or damaged. Bad side is it took nearly 10 days to get the parts. Chipper works like a champ and chipped everything I fed it! Hence the name Seymour....!

Have had the chipper about two months now. Probably have about 30 hours of chipping on it. I am very satisfied to this point. I've never done chipping before so don't really have anything to compare to, but it does seem to do a nice job. I have 10 acres with a lot of standing dead. It actually seems to handle live wood better than the dead stuff. I noticed if the wood is real punky, where it kind of just turns to dust, you have to be careful so it doesn't clog. I bought the electric start and the extended chute. Glad I got both. Electric start is a bargain at $200, includes the battery. Only complaint it the assembly instructions suck. Its not that hard, but the instructions are worthless. There were no instructions with the optional chute. Note - just don't tighted the bolts too much while installing the chute. After you get it on, then tighten only enough so it still swivels.

16.5 chipper

Chipper looks like it will do the job haven't used it yet just got it together the problem I had was it was missing the 4 1/2 bolts for the discharge shoot luckily I work in a shop with access to bolts and nuts also could not get the lights to ground even after grinding the powder coat off of light brackets had to run a separate wire for the ground to each light also this comes with the pin hitch tongue for lawn towing but I got the road tow package so the pin hitch was not with the chipper even though it is standard and they don't deduct the price of the pin hitch from the total cost other than that product arrived in crate in good shape but would not fit between wheel wells of a f-250 super duty so had to strap down on tailgate I think they could make the crate a little more narrow to solve this but the packaging was good

2nd review update

I purchased my 16.5 DR Chipper a little over a year ago. In my first review, my only “complaint” was that it was not exactly self feeding, the smaller branches attached to the larger branch tended to keep the branch from self feeding and you had to push then into the hopper, and the larger branches, 2-4+ inches in diameter just sort of bounced around in the chute if you did not push the branch in. About a month ago, I replaced the blade with a new, sharp blade. This drastically improved the self feeding of the chipper by about 100%. The two times I’ve used the chipper since changing the blade, the branches “stalled” in the chute only when it was full of smaller side branches that clogged the feeding, and the larger 2-4+ inch branches self fed completely through without any pushing by me. I also ordered and have installed the extended discharge chute. It's worth every penny, wish I had ordered it in the first place. I highly recommend ordering it along with the chipper.

I purchased the 16.50 model with based on my concern the larger model would be more difficult to navigate woods trails. The chipper is well constructed and well worth the premiumn price. The chipper works as expected and as with any machine it takes some common sense for satisifactory operation. I am equally impressed with the safety features incorporated into this chipper.

After using my 16.50 several times, I'm 99% satisfied with it. My only disappointment is it does not self feed as well as I'd hoped it would. Large branches need some pushing, and branches with numerous small side branches have to be pushed into the cutter. Other than this, it works as well as the larger chippers I have previously rented from a national equipment rental agency.

Good machine, Customer service lacking

I picked up my DR Chipper (100 mile round trip), took it home, unpacked it and began assembly. It requires 8 nylon self-/locking nuts to assemble and the instructions say they are enclosed. Nope. Had to go buy them. Hopper attaches to the machine via 6 bolts (two per side and two at the bottom) through 3 mounting plates/flanges. The two on each side go smooth as can be but the two at the bottom will not match up with the corresponding plate/flange on the machine. The plate/flange on the hopper is welded off center to the right by about 1/2" and does not allow for insertion of the bolts. I tighten the four side bolts good and tight now that I have purchased the required locking nuts and take it outside for a spin. It runs like a champ and destroys everything I put in it. It's a great machine so far and I have created a pickup load of chips in a couple of afternoons on our dam at the lake where I live. I called Customer service and they returned my call (don't call on the weekends as they are not there) the next business day. I also did not receive the maintenance kit I ordered and the CS rep said he'd get that and 8 replacement nuts out to me ASAP. On the hopper issue, he needed to talk to an engineer about the issue with the bolts holes not aligning. Then I receive an e-mail in just a couple of days thanking me for my order and it will be shipped to my home address (1 maintenance kit, 8 locking nuts, and 1 hopper). That was on 1/30/15 and today is 2/15/15 and still nothing received. Had I not took the chance on the machine operating properly without the two additional bolts (which it really should have since it was engineered that way), I'd not have a functioning piece of equipment for nearly three weeks. Paying for something that you cannot use should not be acceptable to any company. I can use it and I have, but I probably shouldn't without the two bolts. Great Chipper, Customer Service lacking...
Response from DR SupportThank you for sharing your feedback on the DR Chipper and the unfortunate experience that you've had so far. We are certainly pleased that the machine is running well for you and at the same time; apologize for how the situation with the missing maintenance kit and assembly of the hopper went for you. I would like to first disclaim that this is the first wood chipper I have ever used. The machine itself seems very well built and solid. The bolts provided to attach the hopper were too short so I switched out the provided bolts with some others that were on the flywheel cover. Those bolts were longer than needed, so the shorter bolts worked in that location. I used the chipper for about 10 minutes to test it out on a pile of recently cut blackjack oak branches. Most of the trees on my property are oaks that do not have nice straight branches, lots of curves. This is somewhat of a problem for the chipper. I can tell this would work fantastic on straight branches. Curved however is not proving to be a very efficient way to do my yard cleanup. A burn pile would probably be quicker and easier. I purchased this with the hopes of avoiding regular burning. With this being said, I can't imagine having any better luck with a different brand of chipper, but this isn't as "easy" to eliminate a brush pile as I imagined.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR Chipper. We are going to have someone from our Tech Support Department give you a call. They are happy to offer tips on how to maximize the performance of your machine. We appreciate all feedback and certainly your business. Thank you for choosing DR Power Equipment!

After only about 4hrs use it does what I expected. I would like to see a demo of one person putting the tongue from horizonal to vertical and back again. I will be buying a tongue jack and will be leaving the tongue in the horizontal position. Your designers apparently have not used it. I bought the extended chute and now have the short one which I will never use. You should sub the extended for the short and put a usable jack on the tongue.

NEVER WORKED! WASTE of $$$$s and TIME

We are returning our DR 16.5 pro electric start today after 5 months of trying to make it chip limbs. I so wanted this to work for us. We bought this 16.5 because it would chip the 4.5" stuff which is bigger than what we have here but we wanted the power just in case. This chipper always started and that's where its capabilities ended. My husband has called customer service each time we used this 16.5 and followed their instructions (always about changing the gap a different way) but our hope has died. Just changing the gap is about a 2 hour job. It is supposed to take 4.5" limbs but it won't even take 2" limbs. We recognize the difference between dried and green wood but this chipper won't take 2". The info states: "will self-feed 90% of the material you put in it, instead of you having to force-feed the material. This enables you to process limbs up to 4-1/2" thick 2-3 times faster, and with far less effort, than with any other homeowner chipper.". -- No, not true. This 16.5 does not self feed and it is dangerous to try to force feed it. Obviously this 16.5 needs a sharp knife to self feed but our DR chipper never would self feed except for tiny brush. Trying to change the knife is another story -- I'm totally unable to put enough torque on the allen screws to remove them so changing the knife blade is far from an easy effort. We've called customer service multiple times... We've gotten new information each time we've called customer service and we thought "Yes, now it will work" but it never has. Bottom line: the limbs need to be manhandled to get them to feed anytime and you'll need to be a mechanic to make this product work as shipped. If you think this DR chipper is your answer to getting rid of limbs and getting mulch, reconsider.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry for the issues you had & that the Chipper didn’t work out for you! This isn’t a typical situation we assure you. We hope that this instance hasn’t turned you away from considering us in the future. We welcome the opportunity to earn your trust again. We thank you for the review!

Review DR 16.50 electric start wood chipper

I was amazed how quick it was shipped to me. Less than a week from order date to North Carolina. Pickup at freight depot was 15 minutes tops. They loaded it right into a uhaul trailer with a forklift and I was on my way. I love free shipping and no tax! As far as operation goes -setup was very easy. The manual even had uncrating instructions. The ease of operating and maneuverability is great. The build quality of the chipper is excellent. I added a hitch adapter to the chipper to tow behind my atv. I have twelve acres of trees to keep up and it will get a lot of use. I have already put about six hours on the engine. I also bought the knife kit and maintenance kit. I plan on getting the hour meter later, possibly the extended discharge chute also. I would recommend the larger discharge chute just because of the directional control. The standard short chute one is fixed position. Overall my buying experience has been excellent. The salespeople and tech support have been excellent. I am so far very happy with my first time purchase of a DR Product. I think I will have many years of good service with my new chipper. What else could you ask for!

I would give the chipper a 5 but wanted to point out some problems with the shipping method. My machine shipped the late afternoon of the 5th business day after ordering so that time frame was met. It arrived at a trucking depot 3 days later 40 miles north of my house. After calls to set up appointments I was assured it would ship the next day--for 3 consecutive days. Picked up 4 days later and taken 70 miles south of my house where it sat for 7 days. Finally got it 3 weeks after ordering it and didn't have time to try it out until the following weekend. All that said the machine is great and does what it says it will do. Ordered the extended chute and am glad I did. Hook it up to the back of my trailer and shoot it right in without having to level due to the adjustable guide. It is loud so make sure you use ear protection as recommended but I hope to have many years of service from this machine. As someone else said you have to lop off any heavier y branches as it won't feed in but other than that it chews up everything I fed into it. The chip size is good too for use around plants/trees or for forming pathways. Can't wait for the rain to quit so I can get back out there and clean up more brush. K

I am very pleased with the unit so far. We cut down 9, 75 to 110 year old Oaks, Maples, and Bass wood trees. Found out you have to feed one medium branch at a time. Will chip the large hardwood branches that it advertises, but you have to pull them back when the motor begins to stall. Also the small chute opening by the flywheel restricts the leaves from feeding easily. Anything over 3" I cut up for firewood anyway. Ran a total of about 8 hours now and the blade still seems sharp. motor starts with one pull. I'll update when we are completed with this project.

Great machine but a couple of issues
Posted by: Jon K. from Guffey, CO on 11/21/2013
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
First, I’d like to give the machine I bought, and the customer service people I talked to, five stars. But I’m giving the quality control people in the DR factory only four stars – read on. I ordered the DR Pro 16.50 chipper through a DR dealer in Buena Vista, CO and picked it up on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013. I read through the Safety & Operating Instructions that same afternoon. Late Friday morning I started chipping. The B&S engine started on the first pull and the machine worked beautifully. On Saturday morning, after putting 2 hr and 40 minutes on the machine, I finished chipping my first slash pile which consisted of pinion pine, bristle cone pine, and ponderosa pine branches (max diameter was 2 ½”). At that point I thought the material wasn’t feeding quite as well as it initially did, but I continued and went over to a second slash pile and continued chipping. By Sunday, late morning, I had a total of 4 2/3 hr on the machine and I was at the point of having to force the material down the hopper – not a good thing to do. So I decided I would pull the machine back into the garage and take a close look at the cutting knife. It was quite easy to remove and I was surprised to see how dull it was. On Monday morning I took the knife to the local sharpening shop to get the thing sharpened. I was concerned that I got only a bit under five hours from the knife so I called DR customer service and talked to John. He was very easy to talk with about the problem and offered to send me a replacement knife (expedited) at no cost. He asked me to let him know how it works out. Now, I consider that a descent thing to do. I’m hoping this knife works out better. John had asked if I had checked the wear plate (I hadn’t) and since I already had the hopper and both access port covers off of the machine, I decided to see what the wear plate looked like. It came off without a hitch. It looked fine so I cleaned it up and reinstalled it. Then I measured the spacing between the wear plate and cutting knife. At the edge closest to the flywheel center, it measured 1/16” as it was supposed to. At the outside edge, I couldn’t get the measurement tool into the gap which I could only estimate to be about 1/32”. Yes, the wear plate was mounted all the way back in its slot. The only way I could think to widen the spacing between the plate and knife was to grind about 1/32” off of the back of the plate. But to make sure I wasn’t missing something, I called the DR folks and talked to John once again. He said, no, no, don’t grind. Rather he said to move the entire flywheel away from the wear plate. He referred me to the cutaway drawing in the Operating Instructions and told me how to move one of the flywheel shims from one side of the flywheel to the other. Here’s where my problems started. Needing to get my tool to spread the snap rings, I stepped over the towing tongue and caught my foot on the handle that sticks up 3” above the tongue and followed that up with a face plant into the garage concrete floor. Needless to say, that set me back several days. Acknowledging my clumsiness, I’d also suggest to the DR folks that they change the handle design so it is a spring loaded handle that is held in the down position except when someone is using it to lift the tongue. Or at the very least, paint the handle orange-red. After healing for four days from my face plant, I got back to the job of moving the flywheel away from the wear plate. The job was straight forward, but did take a bit of muscle and friendly persuasion. Next, I had to recheck the wear plate to knife spacing. Now I had plenty of play to work with and was able to get the 1/16” spacing evenly across the entire space. I’m still wondering though why I had to position the wear plate just a bit catty-wampus to get the even spacing. That completed, I reassembled everything and headed out to my slash pile. Ivan (at this point, my wife had taken to calling the chipper “Ivan the Terrible”) fired up right away and started eating up the branches like crazy, better than when I first started chipping nearly two weeks earlier. After one hour of operation with the re-sharpened (almost razor sharp) knife, it is still as sharp as the new knife (ax sharp) that John sent to me. I’m assuming the machine will operate properly from now on but if anything else out of the ordinary happens before 10 – 15 hours of operation, I’ll try to add to this review. Jon
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review. We apologize for the issue you had. Hopefully it has been working fine since and you are all recovered? That 1/16th” gap between the knife & wear plate is important. We’ll check in with you to see how it’s working for you. Thanks again for leaving a review. We’re glad you are enjoying it!

I had purchased another brand of chipper. The first time I used that machine it would shake my hands so much that my gloves would get hot from the friction build up when feeding larger branches. When the machine had problems starting after taking a break, I had enough and returned it to the place of purchase. (Lucky for me) I ordered the DR chipper the same day that I returned the chipper. I cannot say enough good things about the DR chipper. It tore through any branches I put into it. The mulch is useable and attractive. I barely had to trim branches for them to self-feed into chipper. The branch tips/leaves would either self feed int or be pushed into the cutting wheel by the next branch that was fed into chipper.

I have had this chipper long enough to require the first oil change. The initial set up was easy and requires only rudimentary tool skills. The wood I have to chip is mostly pine with a little cedar mixed in. If the limb fits in the feed chute hole, it is a chipped limb. The very biggest ones might bog it down just a bit, but if you are careful with the way you feed it, there are no worries what so ever. I definitely would recommend this product to anyone, of any ability.

I've only put about 10.5 hrs on this chipper but so far so good. It works as advertised and has suited my needs. Although, when I went to do the 8-10 hour maintenance on it, I found that both of the grease fittings on the flywheel shaft bearings had vibrated out. I called DR and they were aware of the problem. They sent me out two new fittings right away. They blade is still very sharp at this point.

The 16.50 Pro Rapid Feed chipper worked very good. I really like the big hopper, just throw in a branch and it will gravity auto feed. I was also impressed with the feed rate, faster than I expected. A 4.5" branch can be chipped, but I stuck to about 3.5" max which is no problem. A couple things I am going to change are bigger tires and a ball hitch. I need to tow it through muddy spots so need more ground clearance and a ball hitch is much easier to connect.

I bought this chipper new in April of 2013. It was very expensive but after looking at the chippers in the stores such as Lowes and Menards, this one seemed much more durable. After receiving it, I didn't use it for over a month due to a health issue but once I recovered, I added oil and gas, hooked up the battery, turned the key on and it started immediately. My wife and I have used it several times since then and have been extremely impressed with the size of limbs and trees it will take. It truly will take a 4.5" tree just as they advertised. We have reduced several stacks of trees and limbs to nice mulch for our flowers and walkways. I am now convinced that the $3000 was well worth the money. We received free shipping so we saved even more than the discounted price that we bought the chipper at. When I mentioned to a professional tree trimmer that I bought a chipper, he said "you didn't buy one from Lowes did you?" He was impressed that I bought a DR and wanted to see it. You will not be disappointed, we weren't!

I bought this chipper to clean up several years of tree limbs which have piled up over the past 5 years. A week after I got it, I had two Bradford pear trees come down during a bad storm. It took the better part of a weekend to clean up my trees and my neighbor's tree. The chipper ran almost continuously. I did not expect to use it so much so soon after getting it. It generated about 30 big cart loads of chips- which I then used to mulch every plant and tree in my yard and several loads in my neighbor's yard. I have named my chipper the She Beast, cause it is a 'man eater'. Wow! what a machine. Started the first pull and has ever since. I have yet to get to the older limbs which I had originally wanted it for but it won't be long till I do. Yeah! more mulch. I'm so thankful I got the larger 4 1/2" capacity machine.

Great Product, You Wont Be Disappointed

Excellent machine, chews through brush and everything you can feed through it. I ran it for almost 12 straight hrs on 1st use to clear a number of huge brushpiles consisting of elm, oak, and walnut. Dry black walnut is hard but the DR chomped through well. Only negatives I can think of are (1) the base the engine sits on - a bit thicker gauge might improve (reduce vibration), and (2) the belt cover - some quick removal screws/features would be nice so you dont have to remove all the screws to grease the main shift or get to the belt (make it easier and faster to remove for maintenance). This is a well built machine, a bit spendy, but worth the money -- I think it will hold up well and for a long time. Dont waste your money on a lesser machine.

This is a powerful little machine. We chose this size because larger diameter pieces are firewood. It has been very useful. There is a little bit of a learning curve, because it likes the branches straight, and so a little more cutting is required than you might anticipate.

Took delivery of my 16.5 Pro 2 months ago, and added the optional chute 4 weeks later. The system has been used for 8 hours straight every Saturday since first taking delivery. We have 2 acres of heavily storm-damaged red oak. I was concerned about the review that reported the system would not chip hardwood larger than 2" in diameter, but decided to purchase the chipper anyway. I'm glad I did - 4.5" diameter older dry oak branches have absolutely not been a problem at all. In fact everything we've been chipping is oak, ranging in size from twigs to 10-foot branches 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Yes it slows down for a moment while grinding through the big stuff, but it handles it just fine. I was also curious how long the cutting blade would last while chewing through all the hardwood, and as a precaution I ordered another blade when I bought the larger chute. I'm happy to report that after 8 full days of use, for 8 hours on each of those days, I have noticed no degradation in chipping ability at all. I highly recommend this chipper.

16.5 Chipper after 2.5 years of use

I have had no problems with the chipper. If you do larger trees with odd angle branching buy a good lopper to trim branches prior to feeding. Be sure to wear hearing and face protection. The unit is a good value. It allows clean up at any time of year as opposed to dangerous burning in a wooded area. The unit does fine on softer woods. Do not try to feed a larger hardwood branch (oak, maple of birch) over 3 inches down the shoot --- unless you are prepared to back it out to let the engine recover. I like working in a team with wife. She preps branches and passes, I feed down the chute. You can really make piles go away fast.

Wasn't this machine tested before being shipped???

Belt started burning because it was rubbing on belt shield, had to remove shield. This should have been caught on test run before shipping. No way can you cut a 41/2 " branch, that's a joke Most of the wood on my property is maple and the 16.50 does not handle a dry piece of that wood very well. Maybe pine or greenwood it can handle but maple is a problem. I have their log splitter and it has worked great for the past 5 years but I am disappointed in the chipper.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you posting a review. We like to hear from the owners of our equipment about how they use them and how the machines are performing. We don't recommend running it without the Belt Guard in place. If you haven't called in to Tech Support. please do. Bought this chipper end of april, have run 6 tanks of gas thru it, with no problems. It works best if there are no Y branches, so have do a little more triming.Have run 4 inch aspen thru it , will slow it down but doesn't stall. The maple and ironwood biggest 2 inch and works great, any thing bigger is sauna wood. This machine will be tested to its limit, just had a forty logged and by the time snow flys the woods will be clean. For the money it seems like a good machine.

I would recommend this to anyone who is maintaining property. You can chip the branches or greenery and the use it to make mulch out of it. It beats trimming, cutting up burning or hauling off the pruned products.

This product was great for what we bought it for. In Michigan we cleared large thickets of jack pines up to three inches in diameter, and used the chips to stabilize the loose sand in the driveway. As an added benefit we cleaned our yard and the neighbors yard in one day after a wind storm downed limbs in our place in Ohio.

I bought the chipper when a blight killed 11 mature pine trees, up to 30 feet high. The chipper reduced all but the largest limb ends and the trunks to usable mulch in two weekends. The landscape crew argued about who got to do the chipping and loved this machine. It is easy to use, easy to move, and performs as promised. The swivel discharge chute is an especially good feature--I directed the chips into a big wheeled trash container and could dump it wherever I wanted mulch.

I can clean up my property as the need arises and make my own mulch for walkways, flowerbeds and gardens.

I shopped & shopped for a chipper and kept on coming back to the DR chipper. After speaking to a real person @ DR I went w/her recommendation and bought the 16.5 Pro chipper. And, I am glad that I did purchase this unit. It was more money than I anticipated spending but worth every cent. The additional power makes the difference and saves tons of time. I have used it 5-6 times now and it starts on the first or second pull every time, runs strong and does the job. I expect many years of trouble service and that's why I didn't go with anything else. I would highly recommend the unit!

I have several pecan and cedar trees in my yard. The pecans are forever dropping small limbs, 2 inch diameter or less. I pile these until I get enough to make it worth while to hook up the chipper behind my pickup and in a very short time I have bed full of chips. I use the chips for mulch and walkways. I no longer burn brush piles, instead I recycle which is cleaner and safer.

Thank you DRpower for a great piece of equipment. In 2009 I purchased 40 acres of land to build my retirement home. I had lots of brush and trees that clogged the property. The task to clean this place up was overwhelming. I needed some help. I ordered your 16.50 Pro series Rapid-feed chipper and went to work the day it arrived. The 16.50 Pro was everything as advertised and more. Turning my years of neglected overgrown property into piles of beautiful mulch was easy work compared to what I had to do before my machine arrived. The large feeder chute and auto feed capability made my task easy. I did not have to trim down the branches or pre-mulch the brush. All I had to do was get the material into the chute and the machine did the rest. Maintenance and changing of the blade was so easy. This machine is worth every dime invested and more. All my neighbors were amazed on just how nice this machine operated. So once again, thanks for a great product.

I've been clearing some land behind my house. This chipper simply tares through branches as fast as I can load them in. It sucks gas, so pile-up your branches before you start the engine. I tried using it without the extension chute and it quickly makes a pile of chips around its tire - you need the chute.

Q.Chipping red cedar, can you give me an idea about how many hours I can chip before the blade will need sharpening?
A.The 16.5 Pro electric starting Chipper can process dry or green wood up to 4.5 inches in diameter. Green wood processes quicker and easier than dry wood. Softwood processes easier than hardwood.

The chipper knife is made of high-carbon/high chromium forged alloy D-2 tool steel which is exceptionally strong at a Rockwell hardness of 55-58 and has an excellent edge holding ability. The knife has the potential to be used for 20 hours without having to be sharpened.

Your operator experience will eventually help you with how different types of wood will chip and how fast you can process them.

Q.Can a starter and battery be added later if desired?
A.Unfortunately the fly wheel on most manual start engines is not set up to accept the addition of a starter motor. Due to this, I recommend that if you think you are going to want an electric start version in the future, it is best to get it from the beginning. Additionally, in the off chance that an engine manufacturer does make the engine able to have an electric start assembly added to it, usually purchasing the parts to do this upgrade is quite a bit more than the price difference between a manual start and electric start machine. Q.chipper vs chipper shredder
What is the difference between your chipper and your chipper shredder?
A.Our Chipper/Shredder has a separate hopper for specifically shredding vegetation. If greenery is ran through a chipper hopper it doesn't necessarily become "chipped". It will mostly just tear it up. Whereas a shredder hopper will mulch the greenery. All of the models have their own chipping and shredding capacities.

Q.Will the 16.50 Pro Rapid Feed chipper/shredder handle dry/dead brush & branches?
We have 3 acres of ash juniper/cedar where the lower branches are already dead.
A.We have used our chipper for piles of dead trees and branches (hardwood and softwood) that have been cut for several months. We have had no issues with cutting these up to 4.5" thick. Once the trees or branches get started down into the cutter, you can just let them be pulled in by the blades. Ours works great!

Q.Does this shred piles of leaves?I have not seen any of the videos where they dump a huge pile of leaves into the machine or is this mostly for chipping?
A.All of the DR Chippers are designed to handle any wood that can fit down the hopper opening (within the maximum diameter ratings) and make rigid contact with the knife-edge. Material that is extremely flexible, soft, lightweight, fibrous or sticky such as vines, leaves, weeds and prunings will not adequately chip or may even clog the discharge chute. For this type of material, you will want to consider a DR Chipper/Shredder which is desgined for chipping tree branches and shredding different type of debris.

Q.Can this chipper be used with multiflora rose canes?
I am clearing a forest infested with multiflora rose. The canes can be up to eight feet long. Most canes are less than an inch in diameter but can be very bushy. Should I get a chipper like this or a shredder?
A.I would recommend the DR Chipper/Shredder for your multiflora rose, it work's better for the smaller branche's.

Q.Does this model come with a discharge chute? Will this model chew-up/shred cardboard?
A.All models of the DR Chipper come standard with the low profile discharge chute. However, we offer an optional extended top-discharge chute that is compatible with the 16.50 Pro, 30.00 Pro-XL and the 3-Point Hitch Chipper models. To view the optional top-discharge chute, please click on the following link: http://www.drpower.com/prdSell.aspx?Name=cpr-sp-ext-discharge-chute The DR Chippers and Chipper/Shredders are not intended for the processing of manufactured paper products, they are designed to chip or shred only normal organic debris. The Chippers have never been tested with cardboard, so we do not have any specific performance data on this material and therefore can not guarantee it would work for this application.

Q.Will this chipper handle palm fronds. I have Florida Date palm limbs I need to chip up.
A.For chipping palm fronds, we recommend the Chipper/Shredder. This model feature a hopper for chipping woody material and a hopper for vegetation. The frond would need to be cut into two pieces. The stocky base would be ran through the chipping hopper which uses knives for chipping and the green vegetation through the shredding hopper. The shredding hopper uses hammers to pulverize and shred vegetation. This would give you maximum results when disposing of the palm fronds. Here is a link to our Chipper/Shredder line. http://www.drpower.com/power-equipment/chippers/chipper-shredders/

We thank you for your interest. fc

Q.Is this product good for cedars?
Most of my debris is from limbing cedars and softer hardwoods. Is this going to chip the soft cedar limbs that can be small in diameter at times? I don't want to make the investment to discover that is wont handle the material. Also..Is this unit going to work rapidly as advertised? I have lots of material and limited time to work at home.
A.All of the DR CHIPPERS are designed to handle any type of wood that can fit down the hopper opening (within the maximum diameter ratings) and make rigid contact with the knife-edge. For smaller diameter limbs, we suggest you bundle them up before loading into the hopper. Once you drop and guide the branches into the large hopper, most branches are chipped without having to push them through the machine. About 90% of the material you drop in will chip on its own, freeing you to get more material.
