Overview

The BurnCage in Action!   (1:08)

Safe and Effective Back Yard Burning.

The BurnCage is specially engineered to overcome all the problems associated with burning in a barrel or open pit. The perforated, stainless steel design maximizes airflow so fires light quickly, and burn far hotter and more thoroughly. Burn temperatures as high as 1600 degrees F mean less residue and fewer ashes. Includes a perforated debris lid (with handle) that contains all the burning embers. The optional ash catcher base makes cleanup easy. And the stainless steel resists rust and corrosion, so it won't be an eyesore on your property. It even collapses and folds up for easy storage—hanging on a hook or leaning against a wall.

If you've used a 55-gallon drum or open pit, you know the problems:

  • Poor circulation won't allow you to burn completely.
  • Flying embers can ignite surrounding combustibles (like barns and houses).
  • Drums are awkward to move and an eyesore to look at.
  • Eventually, the drum will rust out.

With the Burn Cage, you will enjoy:

  • Cleaner, more efficient fires.
  • Plenty of room. Holds 8.1 cubic feet!
  • Lightweight, portable, and folds for easy storage.
  • Easy to set up. Anyone can unpack and have it ready to use in just a few minutes.

With the BurnCage you'll burn faster, safer and more thoroughly than ever before!

*Burning household trash is illegal in many areas. Always check with local ordinances before burning.

Features

Expertly Engineered

Specially engineered perforated side panels allow for maximum airflow and high burn temperatures. Can burn in excess of 1600 degrees F, resulting in cleaner and more efficient fires with less residue and minimal ash.

Plenty of room

Your Burn Cage™ holds eleven hundred cubic inches MORE than a 55-gallon drum. Measures 35" x 20" x 20".

Easy to clean afterwards.

Place the optional Ash Catcher under your BurnCage for easy clean-up and to help to prevent leaving a scorch mark behind.

Debris lid traps embers.

The perforated debris lid traps flying embers and ensures that they remain contained. The lid removes easily with the included handle.

Sturdy, won't rust.

Durable, corrosion-resistant steel withstands temperatures in excess of 2000° F. Made from the same material used in furnaces and automobile mufflers.

Collapsible Design - Easy to set up, easy to Operate.

Just unfold the stainless steel panels, screw on the feet, and you're ready to burn! Square barrel design with formed corner hinges "z-folds" into a neat stack less than one inch thick!

Safe backyard burning.

Your portable BurnCage is one of the safest ways to dispose of your household combustibles.

I haven't really had a chance to burn anything in it yet. I see one problem in practical use. The handle for the top is poorly conceived. IF hot it would be dangerous to try to use. It is too short for leverage without two hands, and the top could easily fall off the hooks. A longer, permanently attached, or with secure bracket, rod, long enough for leverage on the top, with an inslated handle end should have been designed for it. Even then I would use an ov-glove or similar protection with it. Otherwise i am confident that things will burn fine in it, and i may rerate it five stars.

DR Burn cage

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
Overall, it did an efficient job of burning, but here are my objections: No openings large enough for a hand, making it hard to move, or even lift while trying to install footpads. If one side had a couple pieces standing above the top, then the lid could slot onto them, essentially creating a hinge, while still being completely removable, when necessary. Handle tips need to be bent back, so they could more securely grab either the lid or the side of the overall unit - NO good way to move it around. I was surprised there was no ventilated floor, even if it sat directly on the ground. If the floor was raised a couple of inches, the funky flat piece of metal trying to be a catcher could be slid underneath. I expected the catcher to have some sort of sides!

We had a lot of sensitive papers to dispose. No time to sit at a shredder. Could not be happier wth this burner. Handled much material without polluting the neighborhood or broadcasting our name and address with sunburned floaters. Well made product that performed extremely well. I would Recommend any size burner. Easy to assemble as well.

I was doing open uncontained burning and kept looking at the ads for the BurnCage - but the price was an issue for me. When it went on sale I finally succumbed. I wish I had done this sooner - everything burns to a fine ash, the flames are mostly contained within the cage, it is a vey clean way to burn with apparent safety. I feel confident in leaving the burncage to do whatever - make a drink, take a p, make a call - without worry about an unintended firestorm. Great product, delivers as advertised.

Have used it twice during damp weather with intermittent showers to incinerate sensitive documents that had become too damp to shred. It worked very well, once I got the fire going. Only practical way to attach feet it is slip rods through corner guides, attach feet on top, then take rods out, invert unit, and slip the rods in again. There was a little warpage with respect to the top like other commenters, the shipping box was nearly destroyed by the time it got to my porch but the unit inside was just fine - no damage or scratches. The instructions provide no guidance on how best to lay a fire inside the unit - I discerned various approaches by reading these comments. I think the handle for the top could be longer, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to provide two handles regardless of the size of the unit. Overall, a very good value.

After using the burn cage, it seems to work extremely well. I have a lot of lumber to burn, so the fact that I can stand the long pieces upright, they burn very fast and well. The burn cage that I had ordered, was either delayed or back ordered, and DR did not notify me. So I had to communicate with them to find out what was going on. It seemed a little unprofessional on their part. It took over two weeks to get it.

The DR Burn Cage is a highly durable and well-made product. It is made of the same stainless steel as car mufflers and such, so it will withstand heat and constant use. I used it to burn sensitive documents and the DR Burn Cage burned cleanly and completely due to the excellent design. I would recommend it for yard cleanup and document destruction. Outstanding product!

Burn cage & base
Posted by: Denise H. from Greenville, NY on 06/22/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
This was a great investment. We used to live in city areas where they take away branches & yard cleanup. We don’t have that service in the rural areas. Burn barrels are illegal, so I went through the NYS DEC to make sure we would be able to use the burn cage. It’s safer than burning in a pit - we can control the fire better. All of our branches & trees that we’ve needed to clear are gone & quickly. Also it’s so easy to clean up & store the burn cage & base for future uses. The burn is so clean there’s only a small amount of ash leftover compared to the volumes we’re burning. Thank you.

Also being stainless steel product needs to be deburred as edges are extremely sharp . Quality control needs to be higher quality for production.

Great Product

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
My order shipped immediately and arrived by UPS in under four days. I assembled the burn cage MAX right away but waited a few days for safe burning conditions. I was accustomed to using an open top 55-gallon drum for burning trash papers and light cardboard unsuitable for recycle. Turns out that I would have been safe to burn in the Cage without the wait, as combustion was quick, complete and perfectly contained. No fly-ash or spill over to threaten the surroundings. As this Cage is too heavy to be easily 'folded' for movement and storage, it will remain in place just as the old 'burn barrel' was. Even after several loads of burning, the Cage doesn't seem to look as ugly and out of place down in the backyard. And, the combustion was so complete that I could put all the remaining ash in a 5 gallon bucket. I am delighted with this purchase, and would certainly recommend an appropriately sized version to anyone else needing safe and convenient burn facility.

MAX burning!
Posted by: Clint D. from Denton, TX on 05/12/2018
Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
We bought the BurnCage MAX to incinerate all the branches, limbs and foliage we gather regularly from maintaining a 2-acre homestead. I was impressed by how HOT it gets! The metal turned an amazing array of heat-stressed colors after only one day of use, but that's normal. Loading more timber into it can be a challenge - you need decent upper body strength to lift the lid and control it you don't ant to drop a hot lid on your leg or foot! and then put it back on with the 'tongs', plus you want to make sure you cut things to under 2 feet so they fit in easily so you can get back from the heat. It's going to take a long time to churn through 18 months of piled-up stuff but it will be fun and efficient with the BurnCage MAX!

The product seems well built. Will change my review if it doesn’t work as advertised. The cage arrived with the corners bent and the top warped. Was able to bend them and have it functional. Didn’t have time to go through the hassle of sending back something this heavy. Suggestion for improvement: This thing is to heavy with vulnerable corners in its folded up state. It would not be hard or expensive to zip tie wood supports on the outside corners before putting it in the box to ship out. Would even give a spot the the cover to nestle.

I got this on sale, and was still kind of nervous about spending that much money. However, I wish I would’ve had this sooner! We live in the country, and have a lot of scraps, cardboard, and other burnable things to get rid of. The problem is the embers that fly up and onto the roof and into the woods. This burn cage keeps those embers contained! The few that blew out were just ash, not hot coals. It also gets REALLY hot, and we went thru our stack of boxes super quick. I’d give this five stars if it came with the ash pan for the bottom. It seems like for the price they could include that, although it worked fine without one.

I did my first burn in the cage right after I got it. I was able to reduce a big pile of woodworking scraps from my workshop to a shovel-full of ashes in just a couple hours. It really burns hot and fully. I was surprised that the cage and the lid warped so much. The sides bowed as much as 2 - 3 inches and the lid warped so that it is not a tight fit. Also, the cage is advertised as being able to be folded flat. While that is true, you would have to take off the four corner braces that are bolted to it to keep it from folding while you are using it. I'm not going to do that so I just made a storage space for it.

Great product, works like a charm. So far have burnt three trailers of field waste. Left a shovel full of ashes. Not using the lid or corner feet. The cage could use handles to make it easier to move around.Collapses like mentioned, use a dolly two move it back and forth. Something for engineering to think about. Will pay for itself in short order.

Although it gets the job done without danger to the woods behind my house there are a couple of things that need fixing. These are not new as others have mentioned parts of this. 1. After the first burn it does look ugly but still does the job. 2. The top immediately gets warped and leaves some open areas. 3. The whole unit warps. 4. The handle needs to be longer and cushioned. I use an oven clove. Never leave it attached. With these complaints, I still recommend it and it does the job.

I had 50-gallon burn barrels in the past that only lasted 2-3 years before they rusted out and had to watch them as they had no cover. I bought my first SS Burn cage about 6 years ago and it is still like new, but had to leave it when I sold my Property, couldn't wait to get another one. I give it 5 stars. Leo Mittag.

I am impressed. Already, we had a burn party for paperwork. Everything is contained and it burns quickly and efficiently. I think I could have gotten by with the smaller version, but I can live with this. Additionally, we used it for a camp fire so long limbs can just be thrown in. With a cooking sheet on top, we can do hot dogs and hamburgers

I purchased this Burn Cage to burn old papers, cardboard and documents. The embers do fly wildly out of the cage with the lid closed. Must be closely supervised at all times with hose in hand. There is a lot of unburned material left in the bottom of cage after the burning. Doesn't completely burn to ashes as stated in the description. This item was a disappointment and I would not recommend it to burn cardboard, papers or documents.

Super impressed and would purchase again if I ever need to. Extremely heavy duty and easily stored when folded up. Great product.

Excellent Burn, Then The Lid Warped

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
On the first use I was VERY impressed with the results. My property is loaded with trees and I needed the hot ash and embers to stay put. They did. I burned some old pallets and cardboard. Completely incinerated. No solid residue at all, Just ash. About halfway through the one hour burn though, the lid warped significantly, about a 2" gap on one side and that 16ga won't bend back without a lot of effort. That was the only irritation. Besides that, the cage really creates a firestorm in there!

Burn Cage Max

Rating: Product Review Stars: 5.00 star rating
I had a big burn pile of yard debris, paper trash, and old rugs. I live close to a wooded area and we've been having a good bit of rain. I was concerned with embers floating into the woods and starting something I couldn't stop, so this was a great time to burn! Once I got the fire started in my new Burn Cage, it took off and quickly dried out then incinerated the whole pile, little by little. I started late in the morning and ended up splashing the coals with water after dark. I was impressed with how hot and complete the debris was burned before anything went into the air. What red embers were released were so small they burned out within a couple of feet and never hit the ground hot! It is a good bit heavier than I expected and I maneuver mine with a dolly. The lid warped from the heat, but I don't see that as an issue! Thanks DR!

Great, but can be improved
Posted by: Charles H from Garfield, AR on 05/29/2017
Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
I am extremely happy with the Burn Cage. It burns cleanly and completely. After I saw how it completely burned cardboard I tested it with a ream of paper checks without loosening them out of the stack. They burned completely leaving no evidence of the confidential documents. I trust the Burn Cage. The cage is heavy which is good for longevity. Given the weight, I would recommend a design change. There should be two handles on the sides so it can be moved when cooled. I'm going to make some out of wire, but that is not an elegant solution. I also bought the optional stainless ash tray. This could be improved by adding clamps to attach it to the Burn Cage in a semi-permanent way. That would allow a person to move it as a unit when you wanted. Despite the recommendations above, the Burn Cage is great and far superior to the hideous barrels I grew up using. It works, and works well.

As many have criticized the cover does warp and becomes a bit unstable. The notation that the cage can easily be folded up for storage isn't that easy as the bolted on four feet must be removed each time. The design of the feet could be altered for easy disassembly or the method of attachment could also be simplified. Possibly with the ash catcher combination this could be easier, I did not purchase that option as I have a concrete base that is a perfect size. Very satisfied with the actual burn and function.

BurnCage Max Review

Rating: Product Review Stars: 4.00 star rating
This product is a very good performer during burning operations. Its original shipping carton was in bad shape with torn cardboard, BUT all the parts/instructions included were there. I move the unit from a garage with a two wheeler each time I use it to avoid theft. The unit is wobbly when moved, BUT may not have been designed for this type of movement. Overall, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I have used steel barrels for over 20 years, with 2" holes bored around the bottom; burning still took forever. The XL is WAY above and beyond anything I ever expected. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing a burning receptacle. It is a wonderful addition to my DR inventory.

The ss materials are thick and excellent design. If I buy same materials by myself, it will cost twice more. But the heating of the wall may not even so cosmetic appearance after using is not elegant. No one cares cosmetic. I may have different design and/or material for improved version.

Expensive but worth it

This thing is heavy as it made of thick stainless steel. It's not going to blow over in a strong windstorm. Due to all of the holes, it burns paper and cardboard very quickly. I really don't see the need for the lid, as I won't light it and walk away - I stay there until the fire is out (which is pretty quickly). Expensive but I got tired of replacing steel burn barrels every two years. My kids should be able to use this long after I'm gone.

I have used this product six times and have been pleased with the results. Very effective on paper waste. Dry leaves are somewhat of a challenge but by layering paper and leaves and a little prodding with a metal bar through the slots to loosen any compacted material it burns quite well.

For nearly 50 years I have been using a burn barrel for burning trash, papers and sticks. While it would work, eventually, it took time, energy and created a lot of smoke and burning ash from the fire. We bought the burncage and used it for the first time last week. All of our office papers, and sticks that had piled up over the summer, were consumed very quickly with very little extra effort from us to keep the fire burning. It worked very quickly without the loose ash escaping through the air. We are VERY pleased with the results. Would we recommend this product to others, absolutely!! Thanks for such a great way to burn our debris for the future.

This was worth my piece of mind. It is worth every penny to know that you are burning safely and your house won't burn down, which would be totally more expensive. It really burns fast. I don't have to pile all the tree limbs in piles around the house anymore. Cut and burn. This really adds to the appearance of my home with the mess of the collection I had. I am very happy!

I started using the Burn Cage for the first time today to burn old documents, receipts, junk mail. And the Burn Cage did so efficiently and safely. I was pleasantly surprised. I just put the papers to be burned in the cage, drop a lighted match in the cage, put the lid on the cage, and watch the papers burn and smoke. The holes on the sides of the cage make the papers burn efficiently throughout; so it doesn't smoke as much as burnin the papers in a cook out grill (this was what I was doing before I got the Burn Carge. Moreover, I didn't have to open up the lid and stir the papers in order for the flame to get oxygen as I did when I was burning papers on the cook out grill. It was a hassle having to do this. I don't have this hassle with the Burn Cage. Also, the Burn Cage is very roomy, and I'm able to burn lots of papers in it. I got the smaller Burn Cage--not the XL; and the smaller one is adequate for me. In fact, I had about a thousand of pages of paper I had to burn today, and when I put it all in the Burn Cage, it was just a quarter of the way full! I also like the fact that the Burn Cage can fold up so that I can store it away in the garage. The Burn Cage is sturdy and well-built. It weighs like 40-50 pounds. Be sure to get a pair of heavy leather gloves when you put the cage together. If you don't wear leather gloves you run the risk of cutting yourself on the metal. Also, be sure you get fire resistant gloves (I got a pair of welder gloves from Home Depot) so that you can safely remove the lid (it's hot!). And I got a face shield (I got this at Home Depot too) as recommended in the instructions so that your eyes are protected from any flying ashes. I didn't notice any flying ashes when I was burning today, but I wore the face shield to be on the safe side.

I've been a bit hesitant to burn because I was afraid the fire would get away from me and cause damage I couldn't prevent or control. Burning barrels look bad and don't last. The cage was so easy to put together, looks good and is safe. That's the important part. I don't have to worry that something untoward is going to happen.

My new burn cage works great. I used it to burn boxes of old documents. The fire draws great and I burned 100% of the material. The cover kept pieces of burning paper from escaping. The optional base made cleanup real easy. I like it being all stainless steel. It was easy to assemble and I'm sure it will be easy to disassemble too, if I need to. I am glad I bought it. Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your new Burn Cage. We are pleased to hear that it's working well for you. The Burn Cage is a very effective safe way to eliminate sensitive documents, leaves and branches with very little leftover ash. We do apologize about the carrier dropping the shipment off in a location that you weren't happy with. Sometimes a carrier will leave a package where we wish they wouldn't but also we know that they are very busy and do the best that they can. Thankfully you have a helpful neighbor and your package was safe. Thank you for choosing DR Power - we appreciate your business!

I love this burncage! It is the perfect burner. Husband thought we would need exceleraant but when I put a box of shredded paper down in the burner & threw in a match - put the lid on & it did the rest. Had quite a few old brances & leaves in an old garbage can by the side of the house & put this in after the fire had died & barely had any ashes left on my ash catcher - got out the blower when everything had cooled off & all was done. Couldn't be happier.

First impression: smaller than I imagined. Second impression: the stainless steel is so heavy I wouldn't want it bigger. Third impression--really easy to assemble, obvious quality. Fourth impression: loaded it with damp green tree limbs, added a cotton ball rubbed in vaseline, lighted a match--it started easily and the fire roared, and in the few minutes it took to grab another load of limbs, the fire had burned out. The whoosh as each limb caught fire was quite exciting.

Used it for the first time today. It was easy to put together. Did a great job burning lots of personal paperwork. Burned everything very quickly, no flying debris. Think I'm really going to enjoy it. Better & safer than a burn barrel.

Good But Very Poor Stainless
Posted by: Harold G. from ROCK HILL, SC on 10/26/2015
Rating: Product Review Stars: 3.00 star rating
I really like the concept but have been in extremely disappointed in the material it is made from. They claim it is stainless but after only a month it is very rusty and is also very magnetic and Stainless is neither. So if it is stainless.....It is a very poor quality of Stainless.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the Burn Cage. As we developed the Burn Cage we tested a lot of various materials to ensure that we developed the best combination of heat resistance and ruggedness for the final product. 439 SS which is a magnetic material is what the Burn Cage is manufactured from. There are stainless steel materials that are used around heat which are in fact magnetic, like cookware for example. The Burn Cage has been well tested and we feel strongly that it provides a great solution for being able to burn refuse on your property while keeping the fire safe and under control. We will certainly pass your comments along to our engineering department and want to thank you for your business and for choosing DR® Power.

We used to an old rusted metal barrel for burning with no lid. So if there was any wind we could not burn and it would tend to burn slowly or be difficult to light. With our new burn barrel we can fit many large objects inside and light it and place the lid on. It's done in no time. We are loving it.

too small to burn branches unless you cut them up in smaller pieces which means more work. also, my burn cage does not look like the picture, I have only 4 feet and there is nothing between the feet.
Response from DR SupportThank you for providing feedback on the Burn Cage. While branches can certainly be burned in the Burn Cage you're absolutely correct that most will need to be cut up some. The dimensions on the burn cage 42" x 22" x 22" while good size; would likely require that most branches be trimmed up first. Some of the images on our web site show the Burn Cage with the optional ash catcher at the base. This may be what created some confusion for you and if so we apologize for that being the case. We hope you enjoy using the Burn Cage and as customer reviews indicate; proves very effective and easy to use. Thank you for your business and we hope to hear from you again!

I was a little skeptical about using this product when I had an unlimited supply of burn barrels around to use for nothing, but I am glad I made the purchase. It burns hotter and more thoroughly than with a burn barrel which means less ash to dispose of. The cover does warp but still does an excellent job of keeping stuff from blowing around, unlike a burn barrel.

This heavy dude is a little unwieldy as you are trying to move it around to burn location and to clear ashes. It is well constructed though and time will tell if it holds up to the outdoors and the heat. I've burned several sessions now and impressed how well it works as long as you account for good ventilation of materials and that you don't over do it with wet or damp materials, which tend to just smolder for many hours. Overall, I'd say there's nothing better out there for the price and it works as billed. I consider it the best and safest way to burn on your property. I'd buy it again. I'd definitely recommend it.

I was tired of shredding the mounds of personall documents and running to the county yard with brush. My car would always have to cleaned out adding another chore to the day. Buying another garbage can for a burning barrel did not make sense. They would rust out between the airflow holes I drilled into it and did not like the yellow hazardous smoke that was emitted from the galvanize. I tried the Burn Cage today and it totally incinerated all the contents packed into it. It was more efficient than the modified trash can. There is a loading technique . You'll figure it out after one use. Watch the video. Hope this helps with your deciding your purchase.

Even when challenged with half wet items to burn the burn cage was able to dry and burn at the same time and did not fail to eliminate all debris . At this time I am totally sold on the burn cage . That is a feat in itself . I'm very hard to sell on anything .

The DR BurnCage burns much more efficiently than a barrel. The slotted sides allows for more air flow which burns materials more completely. I have not experienced any glowing embers leaving the BurnCage. Only some small ash that wasn't even hot to the touch. Although some people might find the price too high, it is nothing compared to what a run-away fire could cost. I know I won't burn any other way.

I do allot of consulting for malprctice suits and therefore have to review many medical records. When the case is completed, I have to destroy those records. The DR BurnCage is perfect for the destruction of sensitive documents, destroying them completely. On the first day I put it together, my wife and I destroyed 30 years worth of old tax documents that were no longer needed. As well, other documents with sensitive/personal data was eliminated. I can't say enough good things about the DR BurnCage. In performance, it light years beyond the performane of any shredder, regardless of price. Every family and business should own one.

When I received the burncage, it was packaged in thin, flimsy cardboard. The panels were all bent concave and edges had to be hammered to get the top to fit. For the price, there should have been reinforcement in the package to prevent being deformed during shipment. Otherwise the burn cage worked great and material was burned completely without ashes being blown everywhere in the wind. I am satisfied with the functionality although the sides are not actually flat as in the photo.

We unpacked and assembled--very easy-to-folow instructions--our Burn Cage and immediately set to work. Burned about 10 yards of material the first day and have burned for several days since then, weather permitting. Believe it or not this HUGE pile of brush and grass cuttings resulted in less than 5 gallons of very fine ash--virtually complete combustion! Suggestion to users--always wear thick gauntlet gloves. Suggestion to DR--consider making the handle more ergonomically. After 6 hours or so the handle becomes uncomfortable. I will NEVER burn in a barrel or open pile again. NEVER!

We used this burner for six straight hours to burn tree limbs and pine needles. It works great. Good design and quality made. The burner gets so hot that the ashes are very fine. After six hours we were tired of cutting and hauling wood so we let it burn out. After the ashes sat for a few hours the burner was only one third full. I made a handle for two opposite sides and we lifted the unit up and away from the ash pile. I also added a three foot wood handle to the steel cover lifting handle. The cover does distort from the heat, but it still enclosed the top and sealed in the fly ash. Not inexpensive, but a great product well worth the price.

A lot better than a burn barrel. ignites easily & burns quickly. Be sure to put the lid on quickly as it gets very hot around the area. leaves little ash. Make sure that you have plenty room away from combustible objects. I think that a longer handle on the lid remover [maybe 2' feet] would be better because it is very hot trying to add more material. I am waiting on my back ordered ash collector to see how that works.

Do not think of this as a very expensive burn barrel, think of it as a very cheap incinerator. Only very small ashes remain, which can be mowed away once cage is moved. No weeds, no clutter, no standing water, no burn barrel to purchase/dispose. Must temper slowly at first to avoid warping; no problems after that. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Pricey But Worth It

I have owned the BurnCage for just under a year. Every season, my quarter acre property gets covered in a thick carpet of pine needles. We live in a high fire danger area so maintaining defensible space and removing flammable fuels is a necessity. Dry pine needles burn quite readily. My county does allow open burn piles. But the danger of a stray spark igniting a tree and the necessity to constantly watch the burn pile led me to find another option. I am happy to say that the BurnCage is perfect for my needs. I fill it with the first load of pine needles, add a dash of barbecue lighter fluid, set a match to it and from then on, all I need to do is keep adding more needles. The only exception to this has been my last project this weekend where we received some much needed rain. The needles were still somewhat damp and I had to start with very small layers, adding lighter fluid to each one. But after four layers, the fire burned continuously and got hot enough so that even adding another armful of damp needles did not extinguish it. The fire does burn hot as advertised and my experience is that 10 wheelbarrows full of needles will burn down to an ash pile inside the BurnCage less than 8 inches high. That is pretty darn efficient if you ask me. Some may gripe about the price. At $350, it is not cheap. But given the safety and peace of mind it provides, it is well worth the price. Besides, those of us who believe we need to buy American whenever possible, should not gripe as there is no way products made in this country can be price competitive with merchandise made by people in Asia earning $300 bucks a month. Overall, I highly recommend this product for anyone who has ongoing burning needs to keep their property clear of vegetation.

Well made of quality materials. As far as performance, these things are relative: it's not as good as an incinerator, but much better than the old 55-gallon drum "burn barrel." It does much better with "mixed loads" including some brush, than it does with pure paper loads (cardboard, files, phonebooks, etc.) -- these require some stirring to combust completely. Ash removal is certainly easy enough. All-in-all, a very good product that works as advertised and is sure to last a long time. An extremely good value, in my opinion.

IF YOU HAVE HAD TO BURN MOST OF YOUR TRASH AS WE HAVE, YOU WILL HAVE HAD TO USE THE OLD BURN BARREL AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO. LET ME TELL YOU THIS IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. I HAD THE OLD ONE REMOVED, AND THE BURN CAGE PUT ON THE CONCRETE BLOCKS WITH THE ASH CATCHER. WHOPPEEE, I CAN DAILY BURN WHAT WE HAVE TO A THIN ASH AND DISPERSE IT. ALL BE IT YOU HAVE TO LET IT BURN FOR AT LEAST 90 MINUTES, THAN LET IT COOL DOWN, THAN YOU CAN TAKE THE ASH AND LET IT HELP THE PROPERTY. (HAD TO LEARN ALL THIS IN A HURRY). MY NEIGHBORS WERE SO IMPRESSED, I GAVE THEM THE INFO TO GET ON THE WEBSITE.

A great replacement to the inefficient 55 gallon barrel incinerator - The burn cage is deceptively simple and efficient; and very durable. The perforated stainless steel box allows a very hot fire that quickly reduces brush and other combustibles to minimal residue. This is a great product when you are required to burn within an enclosed vessel and actually works better than an open burn. It just needs a kit to connect multiple units together to allow burning bigger loads.

I was a little concerned about the needles, but the burn cage burns hot enough they are no problem. It burns so hot that after 4 hours of burning there is only 2 inches of ash. With the cover I also feel much safer when burning. No ambers to float around.

much more efficient than a burn barrel
Posted by: tinamb from Pennsylvania on 06/20/2013

Debris burns very, very quickly--it is amazing--with no smoldering and very little ash left. So much more convenient than the barrels I have used for years. Even with holes in a barrel, not enough air circulates (not a problem with the cage) and that causes slow low temperature burning, smoldering, odors and a lot of ash remaining after burning. None of this happens with adequate air circulation which the cage design provides. I was very impressed and glad that I spent the money. This unit is a little pricey, but if it lasts (as I hope it will since it is heavy gauge stainless steel), I think the price is worth it.

I should have thought my process through on what I intended to burn. My mistake. The material is definitely quality however I do not pack mine up each weekend. I just leave it out in my burn area. Its definitely tarnished and rusted but it serves its purpose. One thing I didn't consider is the ease of adding additional items vs. the time it takes to burn down the first load. Paper products will still create flying ashes even though you have the lid on. Beware! Its not nearly as bad as if you were to burn these in an open barrel or pit. Take caution on trying to add more material as things burn down.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Thanks for doing that! Please do try to "plan the burn" so you open the lid as little as possible and please be careful when you do! We’ll pass your concerns on for future consideration.

This burn cage, although expensive, works very well and should last a long time. With all the holes the fire burns quickly and completely. The size of the holes keeps any large items of paper or other burning material from flying off to start fires. The only slight draw back is that the material is thin and does warp under heat. The lid will warp as one part heats up faster than another and can allow some larger pieces to escape but after the fire is going good it does flatten out as the heat is over the entire lid. Much better than an old fashioned burn barrel and will not rust out like the old barrels do.

Finally have something to replace my open-air burn pit to safely dispose of brush, yard trimmings and miscellaneous rubbish. However, the top warped after first use and no longer fits down flat although it does still contain burning materials. It either needs to be slightly larger or deeper to fit down over sides of cage. Because the 'feet' are merely flat metal plates with flanges to attach to cage, the unit cannot be easily moved by sliding or dragging. If supports were formed as four-sided squares or as round ball-type feet, I think it would be easier to move unit away from burn site for ash cleanup or storage of assembled unit. Overall, this is a great product.

DR Burn Cage
Posted by: Bluzman from Iowa on 06/20/2013

I bought this product several months ago at the point that my last burn barrel was oxidizing into the ground. I was very easy to construct. I have since burned a great deal of trash in the unit and have been very satisfied with the results. Because of the ventilation, the contents burn completely leaving very little ash. Because the unit is a cage without a bottom, it does not fill up with what little ash remains and is therefore very easy to move. I have confidence that the steel construction will hold up over time. All in all, a good purchase.

When I fist saw this burner cage I thought it was a clever but overpriced idea. When DR had their Spring sale I decided to take the gamble and I'm glad I did. I was impressed with it from the moment I opened the box. Set up is super easy. It is made to be collapsible and stored when not in use if you choose. I put the burning cage through its paces with Spring clean-up and some serious limb burns. It burns everything up very fast at a very hot temperature... even those pesky thick mail order catalogs! There is little smoke, even when I added green tree trimmings to a burn. Its heavy gauge perforated lid stays put and doesn't warp at all with the intense heat. The removable lid handle fits perfectly and is an excellent touch. So far, the DR Burn Cage hasn't disappointed me and its stainless steel construction ensures me it'll be around for a long time, unlike even the heaviest walled steel barrel. Take it from me, it is well worth the price after all.

However, it warped or became misshapen, not a lot but enough so the lid does not fit securely. It was a tight fit when new. Trouble is the base changed shape slightly and the lid did not. The results is there are gaps where burning material can get airborne. We still use it and prefer it to our chipper. You can go through a lot of debris in short order. The lid should be slightly larger than the unit, like the base is, so it overhangs

This burn cage is just like the description in every way. It works well, burning very hot down to a fine ash. It is well made of heavy stainless steel. The ash pile burns down finer even faster if you give it a stir. And the warning given with it is accurate, it generates a lot of heat which could ignite nearby brush or dry grass. I am very satisfied with it.

Excellent product and highly recommended... especially if you live in a rural area and have to haul your trash.

The main problem I have come across, is the top has such a tight fit that it can't work, and it distorts badly from having to take most of the heat. Make the top larger and then you don't have to worry about cinders coming out the top and that is a big problem for me, I live in the middle of a National Forrest!!! Paying the price I did you would think someone would have tested this and figured it out I am no brain surgeon but even I saw this is a major defect. Fix that and you will have an excellent product all around.

I love how it contains all the burning debris; very safe burning. However, the lips on the lid should be larger, at least one inch, to overlap the sides as the metal lid warps a bit due to heat. Also, while the four feet are stable, I think that a bottom one piece "frame" much like the lid but with inner and outer lips would permit instant set up and take down with no nuts and bolts or tools.

We use to use 2-3 55 Gallon drums/year....and never had burns as complete as the DR Burn cage....Wish we had bought one or more years ago...we will order an ash pan in the future....not 100% needed but can be useful....sometimes wish it were a few inches wider & taller...but not critical.

INACCURATE DESCRIPTION!

This cage will rust and warp! They say No more old rusty burnbarrel! That is partially correct as now you have a rusty old burn cage that you spent $300 on! Outside of that it does an amazing job of incinerating paper products without leaving half charred pieces of paper all over your yard.
Response from DR SupportThanks for leaving a review about your Burn Cage. We are sorry to hear you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of it. We are glad that it is working well for you though!

I had been thinking of getting the "traditional" steel barrel. My concern, however, was that the unit could have been stolen since it would be standing outside my vacation home and no one would be on site to keep an eye on it. The Cage is perfect because I can break it down and store it until needed again.

Very good product

The burn cage does the job it is designed to do, and very well at that. I use mine weekly and have had no problems. There are 2 things I wish DR would improve, however. First, a longer handled lid lifter with a grip surface would be nice. I've added a "cheater bar" to the one that came with the cage to address those issues, so its not a big deal. Secondly, I wish the unit was bigger with a slightly oversized lid to account for heat warpage of the sides when used for long (8 hr +) periods. All in all though a very good product and far better than a barrel.

Burn cage great!

The burn cage is a bit spendy but I have never regretted the purchase. I live in a remote part of Wyoming so very important that I control ashes from flying in the air since it can get tinder dry here. The burn cage allows air to flow through, which keeps fire burning hot, while keeping ashes contained. My burn cage arrived missing a couple of bolts. I called customer service and they shipped me a new burn cage immediately. Great customer service! Buy it!

Although it's better than a steel drum with holes burned in it, I was surprised at how much it has warped after only a couple of uses. The top barely fits on now. Way too much money for what it is....poor value.

This would be a much nicer product to use if the lid didn't immediately warp and the sides would hold the warped lid. Won't happen and would recommend the lid be made larger so it will fit easier and you don't burn yourself trying to remove or put it back on when a fire is lit.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review of the Burn Cage. We appreciate you taking the tie to do this.! We will contact you and have forwarded your suggestion to Product Development.

Expensive But Worth IT

Usually I wouldn't have bought a burn receptacle at this price but our new house is at the center of 4 hollows and the wind blows from all 4 directions at once. Every time I burned refuse was a tense operation and we have no removal service out here in these woods...I can't believe I ever did not want one of these! The stainless steel construction appears to be indestructible. The top cover prevents large embers from floating up on the thermals created by the fire, which is worrisome near woodlands. It burns hot and fast and leaves almost no residue.

Q.Does the wind every blow it over? What is the life exspetency? How much does it weigh? Can I "stake " in the base, to prevent knock over?
A.The DR Burn Cage will blow over in high winds so we do recommend a couple of "stake's" to hold it in place, but we do not recommend having a fire on windy day's. The 16 guage "439" stainless steel is rated for 1,600 degrees and can withstand up to 2,000 degrees. The unboxed dimensions are 20" x 20" w x 35" h and weighs 52 lbs.

Q.Does a lid handle come with the unit?
I saw a handle for the lid in photos. Should it be removed when burning. I would assume that it has hooks that go into the slots to remove it from the lid. Is the handle safe to use if burning is active. If I want to add more material to the fire should I let it burn out before removing the lid.
A.Yes, the handle for the DR Burn Cage Lid is removable, and is safe to use when burning so you can add more material as needed. Please contact us if you have additional question's.

Q.Can I use it to burn logs and branches?
I realize that I would have to cut up logs, etc to fit,but would it be effective for burning larger circumference debris from fallen trees? We have 10 acres and live on a windy mountain, I have a perpetual burnpile in my drainfield that I have to watch over with a hose when I do burns, and then due to the winds, my burn days are few and far between. It is surrounded by woods. It would be nice to have the pile contained, even if I were having to burn more frequently, as of now, the pile is huge, takes all day to burn and still leaves tons of chunky debris. I have never used a burn barrel, so I don't know how well actual logs and cut up branches would do as opposed to the pine needles, grass clippings and paper debris that most of the reviewers said they were burning.
A.The Burn Cage holds eleven hundred cubic inches and measures 35" x 20" x 20". It is constructed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel that can withstand temperatures in excess of 2000? F. The preforated side panels allow for maximum airflow and higher burn temperatures which translates into a cleaner, more efficient fire. You can burn any non-toxic backyard debris that is safe to burn in the Burn Cage. You will want to limit the quantity of tree limbs and twigs that you put on the fire at one time. As the material is consumed, you can then add small additional materials that keep the flame lengths short and reduce any chance of sparks carrying off-site. You still want to check if a burning permit for your area is required, check weather conditions, follow any burn regulations, always choose and prepare an appropriate burn site, clear the ground and have safety equipment on hand (hose, fire extinguisher, shovel, etc.) If you have more questions or would like to place a phone order, please give our Sales Team a call at Toll Free 1-888-550-0062, Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday, 8:30 am to 5 pm and Sunday, 9 am to 5:30 pm, Eastern Time. Q.Do you have any feedback regarding the DR Lid warpage and/or misfit problems?
This burn-cage sounds terrific; but, like most new products,it obviously has some developmental problems? Do you have any design adjustments/changes to address your customer reported difficulties with the cage lid warpage and/or misfit? It would seem the # of inquiries indicate more than a "user" installation problem! I am interested in purchasing this Product but want to be one of your "satisfied" customers ..... hopefully, a design or process change is in-work!
A.Yes, the lid does warp slightly but not enough to cause any functional problem. The lid still sits on top of the burn cage.

Q.Cage StorageThe burn cage is too heavy to move in and out of a storage building (should have wheels). Can It be left outside? The weather here is moderately cold in the winter, some minor snow. Is there any plans for some type of protective cover in the future?
A.The Burn Cage is made of 16G "439" stainless steel. 16 gauge converts to .0598 inches. It is very durable and resists rust and corrosion. The warranty coverage is one year. There are no plans to offer a protective cover for the Burn Cage, the dimensions are 35" x 20" x 20" if considering a tarp or some other type of covering for it.

Q.I will be using to primary burn pine needles and branches. Will it be effective for pine needles
A.The Burn Cage is a safe and efficient way to burn certain debris, but pine needles need to be on the dry side to ensure it flames quickly and efficiently. They should never be allowed to smolder or generate excessive smoke. You will want to contact your local authorities to check if burning pine needles is permitted. Most cities and towns have a pre-approved burn list to avoid buring prohibitive debris.

Q.I have be using barrels for the last 15 years. A barrel will last almost two years. For me to consider the Burn Cage it will have to last a good seven years. What is the average life span of the cage?
A.There are many variables as to how long the Burn Cage will last. It is constructed of rugged 16 gauge "439" stainless steel (.0625" thick) which resists rust and corrosion.

Type "439" stainless steel has superior formality capabilities and is used in the automobile industry. It is often used in place of "409" stainless steel where higher thermal conductivity is required.

Not only does the Burn Cage hold more than a 55 gallon drum, but it is rated for 1600 degrees which will help with less residue and fewer ashes. It will also thoroughly incinerate leaves, branches and permanently eliminate confidential and classified documents in a safe, efficient way.

Q.We live on a wooded acreage. Would we be wise to set the cage on blocks before burning? How much clearance would we need for burning?
A.You will want to check with your local authorities before you begin to use the Burn Cage to find out if there are any special burning requirements, as laws for outside burning vary from state to state. It is always recommended to clear an area around the Burn Cage down to bare soil or gravel. Q.Why not space the Cage off the base pads with 4 angle SS legs and have a fold down floor of the same construction as the walls ??
A.Based on our research, having legs wasn't a concern of potential customers. It would also add to the cost.

Q.How well does the burn cage do with leaves? Is it an efficient way to dispose of a yard full of leaves.
A.The Burn Cage holds eleven hundred cubic inches and measures 35" x 20" x 20". It is constructed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel that can withstand temperatures in excess of 2000? F. The perforated side panels allow for maximum airflow and higher burn temperatures which translates into a cleaner, more efficient fire. You can burn any non-toxic backyard debris that is safe to burn in the Burn Cage. As the material is consumed, you can then add small additional materials that keep the flame lengths short and reduce any chance of sparks carrying off-site. You still want to check if a burning permit for your area is required, check weather conditions, follow any burn regulations, always choose and prepare an appropriate burn site, clear the ground and have safety equipment on hand (hose, fire extinguisher, shovel, etc.)

Q.How is this collapsible when the foot panels are attached? The videos don’t show the foot panels attached. I would hate to think that you would have to remove them first.
A.Thank you for your question. The feet contribute to the stability of the unit. You would need to take them off to fold it up. This will only take a few minutes. The feet are attached at the corners with two bolts, two lock washers, and two nuts. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
