Overview

See how the BurnCage™ matches up against a typical burn barrel!

Easier, better, and safer backyard burning

The BurnCage™ is specially engineered to overcome all the problems associated with burning in a barrel or open pit. The perforated, stainless steel design maximizes airflow so fires light quickly, and burn far hotter and more thoroughly. Burn temperatures as high as 1600 degrees F mean less residue and fewer ashes. Includes a perforated debris lid (with handle) that contains all the burning embers. The optional ash catcher base makes cleanup easy. And the stainless steel resists rust and corrosion, so it won't be an eyesore on your property. It even collapses and folds up for easy storage—hanging on a hook or leaning against a wall.

If you've used a 55-gallon drum or open pit, you know the problems:

  • Poor circulation won't allow you to burn completely.
  • Flying embers can ignite surrounding combustibles (like barns and houses).
  • Drums are awkward to move and an eyesore to look at.
  • Eventually, the drum will rust out.
With the Burn Cage, you will enjoy:

  • Cleaner, more efficient fires.
  • Plenty of room. Holds 1,100 cubic inches MORE than a 55-gallon drum.
  • Lightweight, portable, and folds for easy storage.
  • Easy to set up. Anyone can unpack and have it ready to use in just a few minutes.

With the BurnCage™ you'll burn faster, safer and more thoroughly than ever before!

*Burning household trash is illegal in many areas. Always check with local ordinances before burning.

Features

Expertly Engineered

Specially engineered perforated side panels allow for maximum airflow and high burn temperatures. Can burn in excess of 1600 degrees F, resulting in cleaner and more efficient fires with less residue and minimal ash.

Plenty of room

Your Burn Cage™ holds eleven hundred cubic inches MORE than a 55-gallon drum. Measures 35" x 20" x 20".

Easy to clean afterwards.

Place the optional Ash Catcher under your BurnCage for easy clean-up and to help to prevent leaving a scorch mark behind.

Debris lid traps embers.

The perforated debris lid traps flying embers and ensures that they remain contained. The lid removes easily with the included handle.

Sturdy, won't rust.

Durable, corrosion-resistant steel withstands temperatures in excess of 2000° F. Made from the same material used in furnaces and automobile mufflers.

Collapsible Design - Easy to set up, easy to Operate.

Just unfold the stainless steel panels, screw on the feet, and you're ready to burn! Square barrel design with formed corner hinges "z-folds" into a neat stack less than one inch thick!

Safe backyard burning.

Your portable BurnCage is one of the safest ways to dispose of your household combustibles.

I am happy with my burn cage. It was very simple to assemble and to set up. I chose to place 6 4" x 8" x 16" cement blocks in a square on the ground as a base for the cage. My trash burns safely and completely now. Thank you for solving my problem.

too small to burn branches unless you cut them up in smaller pieces which means more work. also, my burn cage does not look like the picture, I have only 4 feet and there is nothing between the feet.
Response from DR SupportThank you for providing feedback on the Burn Cage. While branches can certainly be burned in the Burn Cage you're absolutely correct that most will need to be cut up some. The dimensions on the burn cage 42" x 22" x 22" while good size; would likely require that most branches be trimmed up first. Some of the images on our web site show the Burn Cage with the optional ash catcher at the base. This may be what created some confusion for you and if so we apologize for that being the case. We hope you enjoy using the Burn Cage and as customer reviews indicate; proves very effective and easy to use. Thank you for your business and we hope to hear from you again!

It arrived well packaged and was assembled in about 20 minutes. I also purchased the optional ash catcher bottom plate and it was worth the extra expense. I burn only paper and cardboard products and they are reduced to a fine ash. Very nice, everything that I expected!

I was a little skeptical about using this product when I had an unlimited supply of burn barrels around to use for nothing, but I am glad I made the purchase. It burns hotter and more thoroughly than with a burn barrel which means less ash to dispose of. The cover does warp but still does an excellent job of keeping stuff from blowing around, unlike a burn barrel.

This heavy dude is a little unwieldy as you are trying to move it around to burn location and to clear ashes. It is well constructed though and time will tell if it holds up to the outdoors and the heat. I've burned several sessions now and impressed how well it works as long as you account for good ventilation of materials and that you don't over do it with wet or damp materials, which tend to just smolder for many hours. Overall, I'd say there's nothing better out there for the price and it works as billed. I consider it the best and safest way to burn on your property. I'd buy it again. I'd definitely recommend it.

I was tired of shredding the mounds of personall documents and running to the county yard with brush. My car would always have to cleaned out adding another chore to the day. Buying another garbage can for a burning barrel did not make sense. They would rust out between the airflow holes I drilled into it and did not like the yellow hazardous smoke that was emitted from the galvanize. I tried the Burn Cage today and it totally incinerated all the contents packed into it. It was more efficient than the modified trash can. There is a loading technique . You'll figure it out after one use. Watch the video. Hope this helps with your deciding your purchase.

I have found this product wonderful for quick burn and reliability . Ashes are easily cleaned up and your ready to go again . Even when challenged with half wet items to burn the burn cage was able to dry and burn at the same time and did not fail to eliminate all debris . At this time I am totally sold on the burn cage . That is a feat in itself . I'm very hard to sell on anything .

Better than a barrel
Posted by: 31449Greg K. from EAGLE ROCK, MO on 05/28/2015

The DR BurnCage burns much more efficiently than a barrel. The slotted sides allows for more air flow which burns materials more completely. I have not experienced any glowing embers leaving the BurnCage. Only some small ash that wasn't even hot to the touch. Although some people might find the price too high, it is nothing compared to what a run-away fire could cost. I know I won't burn any other way.

I do allot of consulting for malprctice suits and therefore have to review many medical records. When the case is completed, I have to destroy those records. The DR BurnCage is perfect for the destruction of sensitive documents, destroying them completely. On the first day I put it together, my wife and I destroyed 30 years worth of old tax documents that were no longer needed. As well, other documents with sensitive/personal data was eliminated. I can't say enough good things about the DR BurnCage. In performance, it light years beyond the performane of any shredder, regardless of price. Every family and business should own one.

When I received the burncage, it was packaged in thin, flimsy cardboard. The panels were all bent concave and edges had to be hammered to get the top to fit. For the price, there should have been reinforcement in the package to prevent being deformed during shipment. Otherwise the burn cage worked great and material was burned completely without ashes being blown everywhere in the wind. I am satisfied with the functionality although the sides are not actually flat as in the photo.

We unpacked and assembled--very easy-to-folow instructions--our Burn Cage and immediately set to work. Burned about 10 yards of material the first day and have burned for several days since then, weather permitting. Believe it or not this HUGE pile of brush and grass cuttings resulted in less than 5 gallons of very fine ash--virtually complete combustion! Suggestion to users--always wear thick gauntlet gloves. Suggestion to DR--consider making the handle more ergonomically. After 6 hours or so the handle becomes uncomfortable. I will NEVER burn in a barrel or open pile again. NEVER!

We used this burner for six straight hours to burn tree limbs and pine needles. It works great. Good design and quality made. The burner gets so hot that the ashes are very fine. After six hours we were tired of cutting and hauling wood so we let it burn out. After the ashes sat for a few hours the burner was only one third full. I made a handle for two opposite sides and we lifted the unit up and away from the ash pile. I also added a three foot wood handle to the steel cover lifting handle. The cover does distort from the heat, but it still enclosed the top and sealed in the fly ash. Not inexpensive, but a great product well worth the price.

A lot better than a burn barrel. ignites easily & burns quickly. Be sure to put the lid on quickly as it gets very hot around the area. leaves little ash. Make sure that you have plenty room away from combustible objects. I think that a longer handle on the lid remover [maybe 2' feet] would be better because it is very hot trying to add more material. I am waiting on my back ordered ash collector to see how that works.

Do not think of this as a very expensive burn barrel, think of it as a very cheap incinerator. Only very small ashes remain, which can be mowed away once cage is moved. No weeds, no clutter, no standing water, no burn barrel to purchase/dispose. Must temper slowly at first to avoid warping; no problems after that. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Pricey But Worth It

I have owned the BurnCage for just under a year. Every season, my quarter acre property gets covered in a thick carpet of pine needles. We live in a high fire danger area so maintaining defensible space and removing flammable fuels is a necessity. Dry pine needles burn quite readily. My county does allow open burn piles. But the danger of a stray spark igniting a tree and the necessity to constantly watch the burn pile led me to find another option. I am happy to say that the BurnCage is perfect for my needs. I fill it with the first load of pine needles, add a dash of barbecue lighter fluid, set a match to it and from then on, all I need to do is keep adding more needles. The only exception to this has been my last project this weekend where we received some much needed rain. The needles were still somewhat damp and I had to start with very small layers, adding lighter fluid to each one. But after four layers, the fire burned continuously and got hot enough so that even adding another armful of damp needles did not extinguish it. The fire does burn hot as advertised and my experience is that 10 wheelbarrows full of needles will burn down to an ash pile inside the BurnCage less than 8 inches high. That is pretty darn efficient if you ask me. Some may gripe about the price. At $350, it is not cheap. But given the safety and peace of mind it provides, it is well worth the price. Besides, those of us who believe we need to buy American whenever possible, should not gripe as there is no way products made in this country can be price competitive with merchandise made by people in Asia earning $300 bucks a month. Overall, I highly recommend this product for anyone who has ongoing burning needs to keep their property clear of vegetation.

Well made of quality materials. As far as performance, these things are relative: it's not as good as an incinerator, but much better than the old 55-gallon drum "burn barrel." It does much better with "mixed loads" including some brush, than it does with pure paper loads (cardboard, files, phonebooks, etc.) -- these require some stirring to combust completely. Ash removal is certainly easy enough. All-in-all, a very good product that works as advertised and is sure to last a long time. An extremely good value, in my opinion.

I AM A RECENT WIDOW LIVING ON A 16 ACRE PROPERTY. WE HAVE TO BURN MOST OF OUR TRASH. I ORDERED THIS AND HAD MY NEIGHBORS HELP ME GET IT SET UP. IF YOU HAVE HAD TO BURN MOST OF YOUR TRASH AS WE HAVE, YOU WILL HAVE HAD TO USE THE OLD BURN BARREL AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO. LET ME TELL YOU THIS IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. I HAD THE OLD ONE REMOVED, AND THE BURN CAGE PUT ON THE CONCRETE BLOCKS WITH THE ASH CATCHER. WHOPPEEE, I CAN DAILY BURN WHAT WE HAVE TO A THIN ASH AND DISPERSE IT. ALL BE IT YOU HAVE TO LET IT BURN FOR AT LEAST 90 MINUTES, THAN LET IT COOL DOWN, THAN YOU CAN TAKE THE ASH AND LET IT HELP THE PROPERTY. (HAD TO LEARN ALL THIS IN A HURRY). MY NEIGHBORS WERE SO IMPRESSED, I GAVE THEM THE INFO TO GET ON THE WEBSITE.

A great replacement to the inefficient 55 gallon barrel incinerator - The burn cage is deceptively simple and efficient; and very durable. The perforated stainless steel box allows a very hot fire that quickly reduces brush and other combustibles to minimal residue. This is a great product when you are required to burn within an enclosed vessel and actually works better than an open burn. It just needs a kit to connect multiple units together to allow burning bigger loads.

With the cover I also feel much safer when burning. No ambers to float around.

much more efficient than a burn barrel
Posted by: tinamb from Pennsylvania on 06/20/2013

Debris burns very, very quickly--it is amazing--with no smoldering and very little ash left. So much more convenient than the barrels I have used for years. Even with holes in a barrel, not enough air circulates (not a problem with the cage) and that causes slow low temperature burning, smoldering, odors and a lot of ash remaining after burning. None of this happens with adequate air circulation which the cage design provides. I was very impressed and glad that I spent the money. This unit is a little pricey, but if it lasts (as I hope it will since it is heavy gauge stainless steel), I think the price is worth it.

I should have thought my process through on what I intended to burn. My mistake. The material is definitely quality however I do not pack mine up each weekend. I just leave it out in my burn area. Its definitely tarnished and rusted but it serves its purpose. One thing I didn't consider is the ease of adding additional items vs. the time it takes to burn down the first load. Paper products will still create flying ashes even though you have the lid on. Beware! Its not nearly as bad as if you were to burn these in an open barrel or pit. Take caution on trying to add more material as things burn down.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Thanks for doing that! Please do try to "plan the burn" so you open the lid as little as possible and please be careful when you do! We’ll pass your concerns on for future consideration.

Works great will last

This burn cage, although expensive, works very well and should last a long time. With all the holes the fire burns quickly and completely. The size of the holes keeps any large items of paper or other burning material from flying off to start fires. The only slight draw back is that the material is thin and does warp under heat. The lid will warp as one part heats up faster than another and can allow some larger pieces to escape but after the fire is going good it does flatten out as the heat is over the entire lid. Much better than an old fashioned burn barrel and will not rust out like the old barrels do.

Finally have something to replace my open-air burn pit to safely dispose of brush, yard trimmings and miscellaneous rubbish. However, the top warped after first use and no longer fits down flat although it does still contain burning materials. It either needs to be slightly larger or deeper to fit down over sides of cage. Because the 'feet' are merely flat metal plates with flanges to attach to cage, the unit cannot be easily moved by sliding or dragging. If supports were formed as four-sided squares or as round ball-type feet, I think it would be easier to move unit away from burn site for ash cleanup or storage of assembled unit. Overall, this is a great product.

DR Burn Cage
Posted by: Bluzman from Iowa on 06/20/2013

I bought this product several months ago at the point that my last burn barrel was oxidizing into the ground. I was very easy to construct. I have since burned a great deal of trash in the unit and have been very satisfied with the results. Because of the ventilation, the contents burn completely leaving very little ash. Because the unit is a cage without a bottom, it does not fill up with what little ash remains and is therefore very easy to move. I have confidence that the steel construction will hold up over time. All in all, a good purchase.

When I fist saw this burner cage I thought it was a clever but overpriced idea. When DR had their Spring sale I decided to take the gamble and I'm glad I did. I was impressed with it from the moment I opened the box. Set up is super easy. It is made to be collapsible and stored when not in use if you choose. I put the burning cage through its paces with Spring clean-up and some serious limb burns. It burns everything up very fast at a very hot temperature... even those pesky thick mail order catalogs! There is little smoke, even when I added green tree trimmings to a burn. Its heavy gauge perforated lid stays put and doesn't warp at all with the intense heat. The removable lid handle fits perfectly and is an excellent touch. So far, the DR Burn Cage hasn't disappointed me and its stainless steel construction ensures me it'll be around for a long time, unlike even the heaviest walled steel barrel. Take it from me, it is well worth the price after all.

However, it warped or became misshapen, not a lot but enough so the lid does not fit securely. It was a tight fit when new. Trouble is the base changed shape slightly and the lid did not. The results is there are gaps where burning material can get airborne. We still use it and prefer it to our chipper. You can go through a lot of debris in short order. The lid should be slightly larger than the unit, like the base is, so it overhangs

This burn cage is just like the description in every way. It works well, burning very hot down to a fine ash. It is well made of heavy stainless steel. The ash pile burns down finer even faster if you give it a stir. And the warning given with it is accurate, it generates a lot of heat which could ignite nearby brush or dry grass. The main problem I have come across, is the top has such a tight fit that it can't work, and it distorts badly from having to take most of the heat. Make the top larger and then you don't have to worry about cinders coming out the top and that is a big problem for me, I live in the middle of a National Forrest!!! Paying the price I did you would think someone would have tested this and figured it out I am no brain surgeon but even I saw this is a major defect. Fix that and you will have an excellent product all around.

I love how it contains all the burning debris; very safe burning. However, the lips on the lid should be larger, at least one inch, to overlap the sides as the metal lid warps a bit due to heat. Also, while the four feet are stable, I think that a bottom one piece "frame" much like the lid but with inner and outer lips would permit instant set up and take down with no nuts and bolts or tools.

The burn cage does the job it is designed to do, and very well at that. I use mine weekly and have had no problems. There are 2 things I wish DR would improve, however. First, a longer handled lid lifter with a grip surface would be nice. I've added a "cheater bar" to the one that came with the cage to address those issues, so its not a big deal. Secondly, I wish the unit was bigger with a slightly oversized lid to account for heat warpage of the sides when used for long (8 hr +) periods. All in all though a very good product and far better than a barrel.

Every time I burned refuse was a tense operation and we have no removal service out here in these woods...I can't believe I ever did not want one of these! The stainless steel construction appears to be indestructible. The top cover prevents large embers from floating up on the thermals created by the fire, which is worrisome near woodlands. It burns hot and fast and leaves almost no residue.

Q.Does the wind every blow it over? What is the life exspetency? How much does it weigh? Can I "stake " in the base, to prevent knock over?
A.The DR Burn Cage will blow over in high winds so we do recommend a couple of "stake's" to hold it in place, but we do not recommend having a fire on windy day's. The 16 guage "439" stainless steel is rated for 1,600 degrees and can withstand up to 2,000 degrees. The unboxed dimensions are 20" x 20" w x 35" h and weighs 52 lbs.

Q.Does a lid handle come with the unit?
I saw a handle for the lid in photos. Should it be removed when burning. I would assume that it has hooks that go into the slots to remove it from the lid. Is the handle safe to use if burning is active. If I want to add more material to the fire should I let it burn out before removing the lid.
A.Yes, the handle for the DR Burn Cage Lid is removable, and is safe to use when burning so you can add more material as needed. Please contact us if you have additional question's.

It would be nice to have the pile contained, even if I were having to burn more frequently, as of now, the pile is huge, takes all day to burn and still leaves tons of chunky debris. I have never used a burn barrel, so I don't know how well actual logs and cut up branches would do as opposed to the pine needles, grass clippings and paper debris that most of the reviewers said they were burning.
A.The Burn Cage holds eleven hundred cubic inches and measures 35" x 20" x 20". It is constructed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel that can withstand temperatures in excess of 2000? F. The preforated side panels allow for maximum airflow and higher burn temperatures which translates into a cleaner, more efficient fire. You can burn any non-toxic backyard debris that is safe to burn in the Burn Cage. You will want to limit the quantity of tree limbs and twigs that you put on the fire at one time. As the material is consumed, you can then add small additional materials that keep the flame lengths short and reduce any chance of sparks carrying off-site. You still want to check if a burning permit for your area is required, check weather conditions, follow any burn regulations, always choose and prepare an appropriate burn site, clear the ground and have safety equipment on hand (hose, fire extinguisher, shovel, etc.) If you have more questions or would like to place a phone order, please give our Sales Team a call at Toll Free 1-888-550-0062, Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday, 8:30 am to 5 pm and Sunday, 9 am to 5:30 pm, Eastern Time. Thanks for your interest in the DR Burn Cage.

Q.Do you have any feedback regarding the DR Lid warpage and/or misfit problems?
This burn-cage sounds terrific; but, like most new products,it obviously has some developmental problems? Do you have any design adjustments/changes to address your customer reported difficulties with the cage lid warpage and/or misfit? It would seem the # of inquiries indicate more than a "user" installation problem! I am interested in purchasing this Product but want to be one of your "satisfied" customers ..... hopefully, a design or process change is in-work!
A.Yes, the lid does warp slightly but not enough to cause any functional problem. The lid still sits on top of the burn cage.

Q.Cage StorageThe burn cage is too heavy to move in and out of a storage building (should have wheels). Can It be left outside? The weather here is moderately cold in the winter, some minor snow. Is there any plans for some type of protective cover in the future?
A.The Burn Cage is made of 16G "439" stainless steel. 16 gauge converts to .0598 inches. It is very durable and resists rust and corrosion. The warranty coverage is one year. There are no plans to offer a protective cover for the Burn Cage, the dimensions are 35" x 20" x 20" if considering a tarp or some other type of covering for it.

Q.I will be using to primary burn pine needles and branches. Will it be effective for pine needles
A.The Burn Cage is a safe and efficient way to burn certain debris, but pine needles need to be on the dry side to ensure it flames quickly and efficiently. They should never be allowed to smolder or generate excessive smoke. You will want to contact your local authorities to check if burning pine needles is permitted. Most cities and towns have a pre-approved burn list to avoid buring prohibitive debris.

Q.We live on a wooded acreage. Would we be wise to set the cage on blocks before burning? How much clearance would we need for burning?
A.You will want to check with your local authorities before you begin to use the Burn Cage to find out if there are any special burning requirements, as laws for outside burning vary from state to state. It is always recommended to clear an area around the Burn Cage down to bare soil or gravel. There is an optional ash catcher that can be installed at the bottom of the Cage if the surface is concrete or dirt, it reduces the chance of leaving a scorched mark. Thanks for your inquiry.

A.16% of the surface area on the Burn Cage is vented to allow for more oxygen for an efficient and intense burn. It is rated for 1600 degrees (can withstand in excess of 2000 degrees). Q.I have be using barrels for the last 15 years. A barrel will last almost two years. For me to consider the Burn Cage it will have to last a good seven years. What is the average life span of the cage?
A.There are many variables as to how long the Burn Cage will last. It is constructed of rugged 16 gauge "439" stainless steel (.0625" thick) which resists rust and corrosion.

Type "439" stainless steel has superior formality capabilities and is used in the automobile industry. It is often used in place of "409" stainless steel where higher thermal conductivity is required.

Not only does the Burn Cage hold more than a 55 gallon drum, but it is rated for 1600 degrees which will help with less residue and fewer ashes. It will also thoroughly incinerate leaves, branches and permanently eliminate confidential and classified documents in a safe, efficient way.

Thanks for your interest and question. ph

Q.Why not space the Cage off the base pads with 4 angle SS legs and have a fold down floor of the same construction as the walls ??
A.Based on our research, having legs wasn't a concern of potential customers. It would also add to the cost.
