Best Trail Buddy

I am a trail adapter for the North Country Scenic Trail. I maintain about four miles of Trail in the Walker Minnesota area. My only complaint with this mower is that it does not cut sedge grass or High Grass very effectively. This requires mowing the area 2 or 3 times to get a clean cut. Our previous mower had problems with throwing the self propel belt. I have not experienced that with this mower. All in all it is a good help on the trail. I appreciated the price I was able to purchase this for and not having to pay shipping or tax. Particularly since I was using it on a public facility. Thank you

Amazingly Easy to Use

We had a DR Trimmer, basic model, from the 90's and it is just now (2017) starting to be too difficult to use with certain failures and consequent kludges we've made. The 8.75 PRO-XL, Self-Propelled, Electric-Starting gives me the ability to do the weed wacking myself. I'm a woman and no spring chicken. Assembly was straight-forward since the instructions were so thorough. I had read the reviews that the trimmer was tough to pull back but the manual says just to push it forward first to release the gears and then it backs up easily. Unwinding long weeds in the head is so much easier than the older trimmer. I am so happy with my purchase and highly recommend.

DR PRO-XL Trimmer/Mower
Posted by: MaryJane C. from Palmyra, VA on 07/03/2017

I've used the trimmer/mower several times since I received it. It works like a mini bush hog! I have heavy vegetation in some wooded areas. Too tight an area for my tractor and bush hog, but perfect for the DR PRO-XL Trimmer/Mower. Cuts through areas of thick poison ivy easily. Cuts through thick grass and wildflowers with a little more work, but still easy enough for me to get through. I have hilly areas that the trimmer/mower takes care of with much more ease than my riding mower or the bush hog. I'm looking forward to trying out the beaver blade on an area that has a lot of small trees (I'm clearing it for a pasture). I'm expecting to be able to get rid of the small trees with the beaver blade, leaving only the full-size trees for the regular chain saw. Good product. Very nicely made. And your customer support was very helpful when I called with questions on installing the tree guard.

Once I received the product I wanted, it was easy to start and use. I am a female who is almost 60 and wasn't sure I would be able to use the pull start/push model. So I wanted the self propelled auto start and it's a great machine in knocking down weeds. The directions should warn users to fully clothe themselves with long pants and long sleeve shirt, gloves, boots, hat and goggles and even a dust mask. This is my only recommendation for improvement.

Waited til I used it a lot

I'm an old man who is in shape and does a lot of hard work. It was killing me to use a weed wacker for six hours at a shot. I wanted a mower, but when I inherited two of them I destroyed them in a month. Rocks or stumps did them in. Before I bought this trimmer I looked up parts to see if DR would bang me for parts once I had it. The parts were reasonable, and I placed my order. It arrived on time, but was missing parts. I called and they shipped out the missing parts promptly, I was ok with that. I also ordered the Quick lock head. That was a good move because the head that comes with it I feel is a piece of junk that I could not feed the line into. I feel for the price this top of the line should come with the quick lock. I read the instructions, unusual for me. I was glad I did. There are some key points that should be followed. When I started it, it fired right up. I have a lot of different areas I mow. One area is around the house and garden. It does great on the flat ground with thick grass. I used it around the garden fence and it wacked down the tall weeds with ease. I have a lot of hilly areas and it did just fine. For the weight and size of the machine the self propelled is a must, especially if you have hilly land. Wear hearing protection, and eye protection. It can sling a stone like a bullet. The nice thing is you don't get covered with grass clippings. Am I happy with it? Yes, very much so. Ask me in two years for a better review. Thank you, Jim

Still going strong!

I've had mine since 2012 and still does a great job. I use it on tall 3-4ft field grass and weeds on level and sloped terrain. I work the machine hard and sometimes I feel I'm abusing it but it keeps going strong. I do the required maintenance especially oil and filter changes. I also use gasoline with no ethanol. Beaver blade works well too.

Excellent Product
Posted by: Mark V. from Dalton, PA on 05/25/2017

This is an excellent addition to our DR Products. It made short work of several large trimming projects and will be a tremendous improvement over our weed eater, especially for the long fence lines and open field areas that I want to rough trim. My wife used it yesterday to knock down the overgrowth in her flower garden before tilling it (with her DR Tow-behind Tiller) and was thrilled at the ease of use - from starting it to cleaning it after she was done she loved the ease of operation.

underpowered, wheels don't disengage for reverse, but otherwise good.
Posted by: Gerry A. from Storrs, CT on 05/11/2017
Rating:
I really wanted to love this. But it's underpowered on the slightest slope - a 2-inch diameter log/stick is enough to stop this machine in its tracks and the engine won't get the wheels over it unless you're going down hill at a pace. This wouldn't be so bad except that the instructions to enable you to pull back the machine are simply wrong: "Push the Trimmer forward a little after releasing the Wheel Drive Engage Bar. This unlocks the Wheel Transmission Clutches so you can pull the Trimmer back easily." - In short, no, this doesn't work. I've pushed it forward a little, and a lot. Neither works. At best the right-hand wheel disengages (sometimes) but not the left. This means that I'm dragging the machine back with locked wheels. This is more tiring than a field and brush mower which makes easy work of the small branches and/or pebbles/rocks (with wheels that are no larger -but of course, they have a larger engine and are heavier). Would I recommend this? If you have level ground, without obstacles that you need to work around, yes. Otherwise, sadly, no. Will happily edit review if I can figure out how to pull the trimmer back easily. For the moment, and the money, I'm disappointed.

Big league for a small-time bush wacker
Posted by: Richard T. from SAN ANTONIO, TX on 03/01/2017
Rating:
This mower/trimmer is significantly different than the non-propelled version. The proper use of the self-propelled model requires much coordination between the operator(me) and all the degrees of freedom this device presents. The self-propelled controls must be properly adjusted to prevent front lift and loss of trimmer action. I'm sure with practice and adjustment this can be mastered. My suggestion is to practice on flat terrain unlike I did which was on a rocky slope. It is incredibly aggressive and if the timmer lines are properly hydrated, any added frustration of having to replace lines often is avoided. Thanks DR and any suggestions regarding drive adjustment will be appreciated. RDT

Powerful cut; self-propel not as good

Easy to start. Cuts tall weeds like a hot knife through butter. Only complaint: the self-propel wimps out on our rougher slopes, and doesn't readily disengage when I want to go backwards. One of the wheels locks and I have to drag it back.

(Almost) As easy as advertised
Posted by: Lawrence B. from OFallon, MO on 12/20/2016
Rating:
I love this machine. It has helped clear heavy grass & brush in my deer hunting area so I now have clear shots with my bow. The only criticism I have is that the speed bar for the self-propulsion is difficult to maintain in one position. As the mower moves forward my tendency is to squeeze the handle tighter (on rough ground) and that makes it go faster, which makes me squeeze tighter. I will find a way to make a block for the handle that allows me to squeeze as hard as I want, but not go faster than I want. Then the machine will be perfect.

Powerful machine, could be better on slopes
Posted by: Ward M. from camdenton, MO on 07/29/2016
Rating:
On the plus side it starts very easily and has a powerful cutter motor. It can get through the tallest weeds with ease. It doesn't do very well on slopes if there are any rocks to go over. The wheels simply spin and don't go over a 1" tall rock on an incline. Also, it's difficult to back up as the wheels lock in reverse half the time.

I bought this to trim my electric fence line (40 Acres). I ordered the "self Propelled" because of the hills and terrain. for the most part it did alright. the power and the string cutter did well. The drive is only Forward and it locks up when you pull it backward. it did push fairly easy w/o the drive engaged. The string was a struggle to install. The electric start came with it (didn't need)my boys laughed at that. 3-4 Stars

The DR self-propelled Trimmer Mower arrived but in the first hour, four set screws came out, causing the bearing to disengage. The set screws did not have washers, nuts, or bolts. Fortunately, my husband was able to replace the screws and bearing. Since, the Trimmer has been used about 3 hours without further incident and is far superior to hand-held trimmers. As this was our first DR purchase, we are disappointed that this obvious problem was not caught upon final inspection before shippping. RDA

Fun to Use!
Posted by: Brian S. from Spring Creek, NV on 06/07/2016
Rating:
Okay. First off, easy to remove from box. Easy directions for simple assembly (next to no assembly needed). Fill oil reservoir, fill gas, feed line thru selected level and start! I barely had to turn it over and it roared to life. I love the self propelled feature. I'm using the blue pre-cut line and then switched to the rugged orange line. Both do a great job of cutting thru weed grass and misc other heavy weeds. Most of the growth is 15-24 inches high and fairly thick. The DR TRIMMER/MOWER cuts right thru. It is really close to "fun" to use! I would advise hearing and eye protection, just common sense. A beautiful machine that certainly meets my needs for approximately 3/4 acre to clear.

The mower has several features which I think should be seen in the ads. The one which I thought was best is that it can be tilted back for maintenance and does not need any external support to remain accessible for service. It does permit me to mow slopes. My "push mower" was murder on slopes. The standard cord spindle does not permit me to insert some of the larger cords I was using on my push mower. I have not installed the quick change spindle at this point. I am sure that replacing the cords will be MUCH easier once I do. Self start is wonderful and being able to transport while not also cutting is a great feature. It will try to run away when it is not also cutting. Wish it still had the Subaru motor.

Put them in as per what I read and as soon as I started the trimmer head they flew out. Had to call support to have them walk me through it. It's not clear to pull the ends through & hook the loop over the lip just above where you're installing the cord. Then to use a pair of pliers to pull it tight. Instructions were also a little vague on just how much oil you will be putting in when first setting it up (in the empty machine).

Great Performance

This machine did exactly what was advertised. I chopped down a part of my property that I let get out of hand with ease (thick growth). I also used it on my lawn for the first mowing and it did well. I love the self-propulsion but the clutch does not always release so sometimes I found myself dragging two locked wheels backward and that was not very fun. Other than that, this was a great buy.

I bought it for keeping blackberry plants cut down in my 2.3 ac. Started first pull out of the box. Set up was simple. Cuts through the 3 ft tall vines with ease. The only reason I did not give it 5 was because I am not sure it will pull itself over the dense fescue to get to the berry sites.

We have been using the self propelled trimmer for a few months now. It works really well and is pretty easy to use. The only reason I gave it a 4 was that the self propel only works well on level ground. We have property that is hilly and has some ruts. It gets stuck in the ruts and is difficult to push up the hill. But it works great on level ground. Would recommend it.

I ordered this unit to replace a 30+ year old Jari. The DR is easy to use and does a great job for me. I use it for trimming along a fence as well as weed cutting along the edge of woods along the property. The Jari worked OK as designed, but it was heavy, the ground speed was too fast, and I am older. I was tired of strong arming it around. I could not be more pleased with my DR!

I've been looking at this for a year or more. Finally said, now's the time. I have several thousand feet of lake-front shoreline to keep mowed and/or trimmed. Been using a hand-held trimmer down to waters edge. This is so much easier, faster, safer than the hand-held and it doesn't scalp or leave divots in the grass the way a hand-held is prone to do. Also,I've got the Beaver Blade coming for all the volunteer trees that want to sprout up in the wrong places.

I am getting older and purchased the 8.26 self propelled after reading the reviews and viewing the u tube. I thought it would be easier to use than my hand held weed eater. Last year I was able to over 1000 feet of fence line at one time but was tired of carrying the weight of my weed eater. So after your advertisement, I thought it would make my job easier to get your self propelled trimmer. But after using it for just a couple hundred feet my back hurt and I was exhausted from fighting the self propelled features that did not work well on bumpy terrain. The mower pulled from side to side depending on where the bumps and ruts in the field were. My arms and shoulders were sore and my back so sore, that I could not even finish the job with my hand held weed eater. Just don't be fooled by the reviews.

DR TRIMMER/MOWER
Posted by: JESSE D. from PORT NECHES, TX on 06/08/2015
Rating:
Trimmer/Mower seems to work well, however I think the wheel on right side, if standing behind mower, needs a little more support than a 1/2 inch flat washer and a 1/2 inch snap ring to to hold wheel hub in place. There is a bushing acting as a spacer on the hub on left side of mower. I believe you need one on both sides. I have already pushed hub over snap ring once. On rough terrain that wheel sees a lot of torque!

Still deciding...
Posted by: PETER JACOBSEN from PORTLAND, OR on 02/25/2015
Rating:
The engine runs, the controls work. It mows the easy stuff, well, with ease. But you don't pay all that money to mow easy stuff. Sometimes it seems tough, but sometimes a piece of brush rips the cords right out of it. The cords are suprisingly difficult to put in, even after the required soaking for 3 days (!). The battery arrived dead, so I haven't evaluated the self-starting. The self-propelled part is weird - it really wants to go faster than I can comfortably walk, and it is hard to modulate the speed, but if the wheel hits the slightest obstacle, it won't pull the machine at all. I'm still deciding...
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback relating to the use of your new DR® Trimmer Mower. The Trimmer is a real work horse and we certainly want you to experience and enjoy all that it has to offer. Someone from our Tech Support Department is going to give you a call soon. Posted by: Eric G. from Yorkville, IL on 02/16/2015
Rating:
I started the 8.26 {Pro-XL, self-propelled, e- start DR trimmer/mower today. Even tho the battery was not charged much at all (I didn't expect it to be), it started with the e-start right away. I turned it off a few minutes later and had to pull it to start...started first pull! Several have commented on the drive belt for the self-propelled model. It worked for me for a few minutes, then the belt came off. It took me about (literally) 5 seconds to put the belt back on...and then it worked fine again. I "adjusted" the chrome bar near the belt pulley so that it was closer to the belt/pulley but not touching. I took it for another "spin" and it worked fine with several "tests". Although I wonder how it will hold up while I am working in the field, at least I know I can fix it within seconds. If the engineers are reading this, I suggest that the "pulley" edges be deeper to help retain the belt in the groove. I'm not sure why it wasn't designed that way initially, but maybe for future updates/upgrades. I hope the pulley replacement is offered to current owners (a.k.a. me :)). I look forward to using this in the field this spring and have a GREAT deal of confidence in this machine and this company.

A not-so-reconditioned 8.26 Pro XL self propelled review
Posted by: Mark from Boudler, CO on 11/05/2014
Rating:
After the numerous poor reviews of the transmission and how it doesn't work well, I had some concerns about purchasing this unit I found those concerns to be somewhat justified as the unit doesn't work well on steeper slopes; thankfully it is not that heavy to add in some human propulsion. The unit does function as described, however. But more annoying is that when I called tech support about an inconsistency in the oil spec between the DR manual and the Subaru engine mftr's manual, I was told that my reconditioned unit was not fitted with the latest transmission upgrades before shipping and that he would send to me all of the parts so that I could take it to my local dealer and have them installed at no charge. The tech support rep was very knowledgeable and pleasant, but REALLY? The DR reconditioning process doesn't include checking the units for the latest parts upgrades before shipping? And now I have to spend my time to take it to a dealer to have it done (and possibly not done correctly)? So much for the reconditioned savings; and it makes me question how much these units are really 'reconditioned' before resale. Country Home Products, that is really poor process management; it wouldn't take much to do it better. How about an additional credit for my participation in the reconditioning process? Also, my unit was covered with oil (probably from draining it before shipping) and some dirt. Again, not a hard process to improve. I'll update this review after the transmission has been upgraded.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR SP Trimmer Mower. We would love to discuss your concerns with you and are unfortunately unable to locate your customer file. Could it be that it is someone else's name and not yours? Either way, please give us a call at 1-800-376-9637 - as we certainly want to assist you as best we can. Unfortunately, Pro-XL Not Appropriate For My Terrain
Posted by: Joe Hill from Alto, NM on 10/22/2014

Even though the 8.26 Pro-XL Self-Propelled, Electric-Starting DR Trimmer/Mower is an excellent machine, it unfortunately is not capable of maneuvering effectively in the steep, rocky terrain of the Sacramento Mountains of south, central New Mexico. Our only option to efficiently cut the native grasses out here is with hand-held string trimmers. We had high hopes for the DR Trimmer and are impressed with its quality, but will not be able to use it in our area.

Not made for tough terrain, but OK on level ground
Posted by: MICHAEL Y. from Aspen, CO on 09/29/2014
Rating:
We just got this to use on a 417 acre property near Ruedi Reservoir, neaar Basalt, Colorado. The property varies between 8,000-9,000 ft. above sea-level, and has undulating hills and gullies. The machine is light and did great when we used it on mostly level ground, but the second we on any type of uphill incline; the machine was too under-powered to do the job any longer. Going down hills is fine, but we have a lot of slightly hilly ground we wanted to mow with this, and the terrain mostly laughs at its' scrawny little hard tire wheels. (That should have been my clue that this was really designed for very mild terrain.) The slightest rock, root or branch is all that's needed to stop ths machine in its' tracks. In my opinion, it would have been much better served by balloon style bicycle tires, on a greasable axle. I don't know what the transmission is like at lower elevations, where the engine surely would have more power; but we found that this machine can't get out of it's own way on any slope above 12-15 degrees. This will be a marginal product for us, and unfortunately probably doesn't have enough utility to warrant its' price tag; expecially after almost $500 in accessories to service it over the long-haul, and to have all most probable trimmer cords, and holders, etc.. Pros-Good chassis, quality engine, nice looks. Cons-Poor transmission power, wheels stumble over anything in their way, under powered for all but the most gentle terrain.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR SP Trimmer Mower. We are sorry that you've had some difficulties with the machine. The high altitude is very likely the reason that you experience what seems to be an under powered unit. We are going to send you a high altitude kit. Installation of this kit should help you out quite a bit. Please contact us at 1-800-376-9637 should you have any other questions or concerns. We appreciate your business

This trimmer is built like a rock. Trims great. One small problem - no traction - has the power but can't get it to the ground. Sadly I decided to return it using the trial offer. I was ready for a run around! Then it started "I want to return a trimmer. What's the order number (then I was told how to find my order #) OK down load the return packing & shipping instructions. Pack it up and when ready call a number and UPS will pick up." The the customer rep gave me Return numbers for not just the trimmer but for all items purchased with it. Next put the return numbers on the out side of the package, call the number I was given UPS showed up and next thing I know my credit card was updated with the refund. This IS customer service well beyond what was expected. On the outside of the box put the Return numbers and a note that all oil & gas was removed. You talk about NO-Hassel DR sets the standard for NO-Hassel. A hint take pictures of how your item was packed in case you have to return it, the pictures will be a great help.Great products and greater service.

Needs work
Posted by: Glenn Schuske from BELTON, TX on 09/08/2014
Rating:
The design of the belts for the head needs some work, the belt is too small for the power of the engine, so the belt keeps shreading. Needs to have a one half inch belt minimum and be American made not Mexico. The drive feature is very under powered and needs redesign, buy a Toro lawn mower and see what they use foe a transmission. Do not use price as a factor for design as you have in this case, people are willing to spend good money for a good product, just look at how much this unit cost. Also the head needs to swivel from one side to the other the center of the cutting head needs to be at least center of tire on eather side. I know you folks probably will not care about what I have said but you asked

Great On Level Ground Only.

The mower cuts well but the self- propelled is not much. great on level ground but not on hills.I have a lot of hills that is why I paid the money for the self-propelled.
Response from DR SupportWe apologize for the self propel not working as you expected. Maybe an adjustment on the cable would fix it? Hopefully your hills aren't too steep. We don't recommend using the Trimmer on slopes over 20 degrees for safety & engine oil lubrication reasons. That said, it should be going up hills like in the picture on the website shows. We will contact you to try to get this resolved.

the mower/trimmed appears to work fine, but the self_propelled part doesn't work AT ALL..... Called customer service and they advised me to take it to a "service repair center". I'm now in a 2-week waiting period for repairs. called CS back and apprised them of the situation. They said and I quote "you're lucky it only a 2 week waite at this time of year. I'm NOT a happy "camper"
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the Trimmer had an issue with the self propel feature. We weren’t trying to sound glib about the “2 week” wait for service. During the mowing season it is rare to find a shop with a back log of work that is less than 2 weeks!

It may be that the belt or a chain has come off & is an easy fix?

We will contact you to follow up on this. Thanks for posting a review!

At first I had problems due to the self propelled. I had to send the first one back and have the 2nd one repaired. The belt was jumping of the self propelled due to a little bracket that wasn't checked before they sent it to me. BUT now it is working wonderful, greatest thing I could have ever purchased! The only thing now is the trimmer line sure does break easy but still love it!!!

Disappointed
Posted by: William Stephenson from Farmington Hills, MI on 08/27/2014
Rating:
This unit will definitely cut heavy grasses, and fairly dense growth but it is NOT made for terrain other than very flat and straight ahead work. I thought it would be good for working on hillsides, trimming around ponds, etc. Seems to be very hard to handle when not on flat ground. Probably should not have ordered the self-propelled model as it is very fast and not comfortable to handle. Also awkward when pulling the unit back...you have to tilt the unit down to get the unit to roll backwards easily. I have had a DR Brush Cutter for 10 years and have been extremely happy with it, but this is a real disappointment. Any chance of returning?
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the Self Propelled TR4 isn’t working for your particular situation. Thank you for letting us know about it though!

We will pass your comments to our Product Development department for review. All of our DR machines carry a 6 month hands-on trial, so if you remain dissatisfied and you've owned your machine for less than 6 months, we can arrange to return it for a full refund, minus shipping. Not like the old DR Trimmer
Posted by: RON M. from DESHA, AR on 07/29/2014

I have a old 6.5 hp dr trimmer which was beginning to have mechanical problems. Loving the machine, I upgraded to the 8.26 self propelled. It is ok, but I returned it due to its lack of "aggressiveness" . Johnson grass that feared my old trimmer, was bogging down the new trimmer. I don't know if the non self propelled product would have more cutting power. I would recommend the product for relatively level ground ( The self propel won't get the wheels out of a 4 inch ditch without a manual push ) and for tall bermuda. The local DR trimmer rep tuned it up and said it was working as expected.

I have an 8.25 Pro-XL Self -propelled (Electric Start) since June 2010. I initially had some delivery issues with a unit that was inoperable/broken but then replaced with a New Item. My property is hilly, with stumps and large stones, pasture and gulley’s and it is impossible to use any riding type machine. This Trimmer- Mower is awesome. It will climb 15 degree hills without any problem. I only use it for Mowing The Mow Ball –(old style) does not clog….ever !. A nice feature of it is it allows me to change the cutting cord height as needed without any tools. It is easy to change belts . I always use the pull cord to start, but the battery feature is nice. You will be happy with a DR Trimmer Mower.

MIXED REVIEW

Frist the problems. I purchased a reconditioned unit and it was promptly delivered. It appeared to have not been used, very clean. Set the machine to running specs and attempted to trim some brush. After a few minutes I noted oil shooting our from the side. Shut down.dipstick noted to be solidly locked in place but could not find the leak and called CS. They were very helpful but we had a problem finding a local service center for the Subaru engine. They agreed to send a replacement unit. I went back to the garage for another look and decided to remove the dipstick tube. There are 2 o rings, top was cut, bottom mushy. Replaced both rings refilled oil and ran for about 20 mins. No leak. So I called CS to stop the new unit as I had fixed the problem. Went back out to trim some more but unit would not start. Refilled gas tank and it started but fuel was spewing out of the carb. Shut down and fuel continued to leak. Closed fuel shut off and eventually leak stopped. Called CS and they agreed to replace it with a new unit. The pros - DR CS did everything possible to rectify this problem. The NEW unit works as published and does a great job. I have 41/2 acres that we trimmed down with a DR Brush Cutter for the past 12 years. This trimmer is a great addition as most of the true brush has been beat down and this new unit is easily maneuvered and takes 1/3 the time I usually spend mowing the weeds. This is my 3rd DR machine. A few years back I bought the tow behind grader for my 300' stone drive way. It does an incredible job. Dr at times is quite a bit more expensive than some of the competition. BUT the machines last and last, work as described, and are backed up by Country Home Products, who are true to their word in their attitude and service. That in itself is worth the price difference.

My DR trimmer has done great work on our little farm maintaining fence lines and places where mowers won't go. The self-propelled is actually more of a power-assist, but it is still good. I got the electric start and the self-propelled model thinking my wife (5'1") could use it, but I was mistaken. It is too much for her to handle ever obstacles and in very tight places, but she can easily use it where the terrain is reasonably flat and unobstructed. We get herbaceous weeds over five feet tall, and the trimmer walks right through. It is great for maintaining pasture margins and around outbuilding.

Excellent item, but documentation needs help
Posted by: johnshcarter from STONEHAM, ME on 07/03/2014

This unit arrived with no oil (OK) but no oil was included in large shipping box (and there was plenty of room). Since all equipment needs to be "run in" or "broken in" when it is first run, I was looking for a quart of "Pennsylvania-grade" single weight oil. Not there. In fact, no specification of the need to use a "break-in" oil for the first 20 hours, nor any discussion of the use of synthetic multi-grade oils for subsequent oil changes (e.g. MOBIL 1) in the documentation. Then came the issue of soaking the plastic "whips" for three days before putting them in the machine for use. I am not inclined to do anything that might shorten the life of this equipment. And, it is OK to tip the machine back until the handle is on the floor to put new "whips" in the ball?
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you posting a review. Thanks for doing that! We don’t ship oil with our machines. We do reference the basic oil needs on page 10 of the Operator manual. Since we use multiple engines on our machines, we ship a separate Engine manual specific to the model that was ordered. That manual gives the correct amounts/specs. The cutting cord doesn’t need to be soaked before use, but is a recommendation to help keep it more pliable. The trimmer can be tipped back to put the cords in, but shouldn’t be tipped back any longer than necessary to avoid the oil & gas mixing. Thanks again for leaving a review.

I got a reconditioned 8.26 Pro-XL, Self-Propelled, Electric-Starting at a great price, so I had incentive to make it work. It came with the problems of hard to start, variable speed drive that was either on or off, and it wouldn't turn off. Wouldn't turn off was easy, just bent a electrical connection to make contact. Variable speed drive took a number of calls to tech support to discuss where to adjust it to get it to be variable instead of taking off at a high rate of speed. It ended up that I adjusted it to be at max speed with the bar against the handle and that gave me the most variability. Hard starting took even more calls and a lot of changes. New spark plug/check the gap, change my fuel sabilizer from Stabil to Seafoam, etc, etc. Nothing worked except pushing the trimmer forward while I pulled back to get an extra hard pull. Then I noticed that the fuel cap clicked like a car; I hadn't closed it completely! After 1 click, it started right up! Power is better than my 6 HP Quantum powered Troy Built push trimmer (Subaru is 5.5hp), I can mow right through weeds that would bog down the Quantum; so once I got it working, it is great! Hoping that my fixes continue to work and confident that I would have had a lot of trips to an authorized repair station to get it right.
Response from DR SupportWe apologize for the issues you have had. We’re glad that the fuel cap tightening fixed it and you are able to enjoy it now! Thank you for posting a review about it.

I bought this as a 70 year old looking for something to trim without wearing me out. It cuts tall grass nicely, although you have to replace cord often. I had a problem with no self propelled power, and the wheels locking when pulling it backward, Was told to take to the nearest repair shop which is about 20 miles each direction, was told there was grass wrapped around the axel. It didn't seem visible to me but cost about $40. Now doing the same thing, and no visible grass or anything on the axel. When pulling it back, one or the other wheels lock up, having to skid it backwards. This is very hard to use, not what one would expect and a total waste of money. Don't buy this thing, just get a hand held trimmer, much easier to use.

After back breaking work with a handheld trimmer, the DR Trimmer is a great relief. I used the DR Trimmer a great deal last summer (2013). It performed well most of the time. However, I recommend some changes and improvements: 1. The wheels have limited traction on slopes and do not work at all on a slightly wet ground surface. Need better traction. 2. The self propulsion stopped working by mid summer. I had it repaired and it quit again late summer. 3. Luckily the trimming season was about over, because the trmmer part itself stopped working all together. 4. $1200 is a lot to charge for a machine with so many problems. I read the other users reviews and I know a great many people have had the same problems I have had (except for the traction issue). It is my hope that you make the above improvements. I would be willing to trade up to an fully improved model. Perhaps you should change your engineers and/or send your engineers out to observe use of this machine in the real world. Your videos are impressive but I do not think they reflect real world performance.
Response from DR SupportThank you for taking the time to post a review. We apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered and appreciate the suggestions. All of our machines do get a minimum of 100hrs of real world testing, but we can’t test every scenario/situation. We did need to change the belt guides for the self propelled model & that has helped to end the drive issue.

Thanks again for leaving a review. We will pass your comments to our Product Development department for review.

Self-Propel Performance is Problematic
Posted by: Paul007 from Virginia on 09/02/2013

I purchased the 8.26 Self-Propel model in May 2013. During first use the unit stopped self-propelling. I immediately contacted DR and they pointed me to a shop that could fix the unit under warranty. It took 3 weeks to get the unit back and learn that the drive belt had slipped from its pulley. The unit worked well through July and August but just yesterday I experienced the same non-self propel condition. This product is the most inferior piece of gear I've ever purchased from DR. I plan to return this unit as its reliability is not sufficient to meet the demands of my property. I am very disappointed that this self-propelled unit requires so much manual intervention. DR should pull this prodcut from the market unit better engineering is applied. The unit is too expense for customers to realize these type of conditions.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you have had these issues with your Trimmer. We have come out with an upgraded belt guide for the TR4 Self Propelled model that should solve your problem. Please contact us so we can follow up on this.

Out of the box it worked about 1 hour then quit pulling. I took the cover off and saw that the set screws on the axle gear was loose on both sides. I tightened the set screws and it worked for about 2 1/2 hours, then stopped pulling again. I took apart again and this time the transmission (plastic) was not driving the mower. I contacted tech support and they agreed to send another transmission. When it didn't arrive for two weeks, I boxed it up to return and it is waiting for UPS to pick up. (You must pay shipping BOTH ways if you return it) and GE added a $50.00 'Promotional Fee' to the 'No Interest for 18 months' deal! I got a notice that the transmission arrived but I refused to accept it. I was VERY disappointed in Customer Service, The sneaky added charges and the quality of a $1200 string mower! I have a grader that I am returning only on principle! The shipping will cost me over $400 but I do not want to do business with a business like this!
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review, but are sorry for the issues. The original transmission may have had a defect & we’re sorry that you didn’t give the replacement a chance.

Depending on whether you purchased the trimmer online or over the phone, the financing disclosure information is posted on the website & our sales reps read it to customers that call in. 2013 model self propelled trimmer mower

One of most over hyped and under perform machine. Here are the problems: 1. Unit does not shut off. One has to pull off the spark plug wire to shut down. 2. The self propelled lever keeps coming off from the handle for being too short to stay in the mounting holes. 3. The drive belt keeps falling out of the pulley. Renders the unit not "self propelled" The unit is in a local repair shop and not sure they can fix the design problems.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you are experiencing problems with your Trimmer. We appreciate you taking the time to post a review about it.

To answer your points,
  1. It sounds like a loose ground connection not allowing the engine to shut off.
  2. The bail bar may have been bent in shipping or could have been a defective part.
  3. We have changed the belt guides to a better design.
We are sure your local service center will be able to correct all the issues. Please let us know if it is otherwise.

Really like the trimmer with one major problem. The B&S engine just is not good. Fuel usage is terrible and the machine stops when going up an agressive incline do to oil pressure problems. Tilting the machine causes oil to leak into the filter and then the engine will not run. I really wish I had the new Subaru engine.
Response from DR SupportThanks for leaving a review about your TR2 model Trimmer. We are sorry to hear you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of it. All of our Trimmer Engines are splash lubricated. We don't recommend using any of our machines on slopes over 20 degrees for this and general safety reasons. Small engines aren’t usually pressurized until they get up around the 13hp range.

Less than 3-hours out of box wheels brook. Factory sent new improved wheels after 3-month wait. New wheels are now broken after less than 5-hours. These wheels are plastic, they will bend on a slope, do not go over small rocks or branches with out a lift and a push. The wheel tread should be like dirt bike tires instead of street tires. The wheel hub at axil clutch needs improvement. Machine struggles up grade, needs some physical pushing. Other than that starts good and when it works it seams to do fine. Broke the head, now need to spend over $100.00 for this and what ever they are going to bang me for some more 3-5 hour wheels. Good luck!, if you think it is going to work around a couple small hills.

This machine is a little pricey, so before ordering it, I read all the reviews for all brands of machines, and interviewed a local guy who fixes and sells all kinds of used lawn and snow machines and motorcycles. He recommended DR. highly. The machine takes 17 ounces of motor oil on the first fill-up. The instructions could be a little clearer with bold print, so I didn't need to read it ten times to find that information. It actually took one operating session to learn how to coordinate the controls smoothly. It basically has two clutches and a hand throttle. My wife and I practiced on the apron in front of the garage learning how to control it. Very powerful; I have to operate it at "low-medium throttle setting". The ground here is very rough and irregular, but it just turns the weeds and brush into a paste. It sounds like a buzz saw when slicing through the weeds and those viney things with "rose thorns". With all the rain we have had this year, the weeds and vines have really grown, some to over six feet high. Doesn't matter: it just blenderizes the weeds. Sometimes I attack the weeds by charging into them; other times I just walk along the edge of the weeds as if I'm walking behind a lawnmower. In a couple of places I needed to "carve" a new path ... and the machine just went through for 50 feet and then I carved a "turnaround" and then came back widening it out. The ground was very rough, but the machine never faltered. After 4+ hours, the original strings still show no significant wear; in my inexperience, I hit the ground, rocks, downed tree limbs ... it just bounced around or chewed right through. When we installed the original strings, we did not dunk them in warm water to soften them first; didn't seem to matter, but we will soften them when we have to replace them. I was going to joke that I may buy the optional parasail and harness and let it tow me behind it. Or maybe find a pony sulky and let it tow me around. My wife is pleased that I am pleased with this machine. NO JOKE: I was at an airport fly-in [I drove] and some fellow showed me his experimental airplane ... a real airplane ... and he used a Subaru engine to power the airplane!! It cannot possibly be this same engine ... but ... it is a Subaru and not a Briggs & Stratton.

WHEN I FIRST UN-PACKED MY MACHINE I NOTICED THE DRIVE CONTROL BAR HAD A LOT OF SLACK IN THE CABLE. I HAD TO ADJUST ALMOST ALL THE ADJUSTMENT TO GET THE MACHINE TO PULL IT.S SELF. I CONTACTED DR AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS HIGHLY UNUSUAL BUT SINCE IT WAS NOW PULLING ITS SELF TO KEEP THE MACHINE AND THEY WOULD SEND ME A NEW CABLE AND BELT IN CASE THERE WAS AN ISSUE, WHICH THEY DID SEND. I HAVE ONLY USED THE STRING TRIMMER AND WAS ABOUT TO TRY THE OTHER ACCESSORIES I BOUGHT ONLY TO FIND ONLY ONE WHEEL WAS DRIVING. I REMOVED THE COVERS TO FIND THAT WHILE THE AXLE ON THE RIGHT WAS DRIVING, THE AXLE COMING OUT OF THE OTHER SIDE OF GEARBOX WAS NOT TURNING. THE GEARBOX APPEARS TO BE PLASTIC WHICH IS A CONCERN. I WILL CONTACT DR AND SEE WHAT THEY SUGGEST.

Upon arrival, the engine would not shut off. The problem was fixed in a timely manner with quick and convenient repair. Once spring arrived and the mowing season began, the machine worked very well in dense grass about thigh high. The self propel feature works well and is needed to assist in uneven terrain. This is the fourth machine purchased from DR. It did not disappoint for performance.

8.75 Pro-XL Mower/Trimmer
Posted by: LCC51 from Texas on 06/19/2013

I purchased this machine since I recently bought 3 acres of land that had never been cleared. I wanted to do as much of the work as I could, plus in the future I will use my DR Mower/Trimmer to mow the back part of my property where it won't be landscaped even after I build my house. I chose a reconditioned one and could not tell that it had ever been used. Great deal! The machine worked well, and I really like having an electric start and self-propulsion. I also bought the beaver blade attachment to mow down tall, thick broom weed (like bamboo). The machine worked as well as I hoped it would, although I had to frequently change the line after it wore down and that process was cumbersome and time consuming. Otherwise, I love this product and am glad I bought it. My neighbor already asked me if he could borrow it. PS -- It shredded a copperhead snake right in front of me I didn't see!! Thanks DR Equipment.

Ordered two, neithered worked

Well the first one I ordered worked for about 30 seconds before the belt slipped off the drive unit and the belt for the head. I called technical support and they suggested I take the cover off and re-install the belts. I declined the offer to pay $1200 for something I have to work on the first day and I sent it back for a refund. We'll I thought what are the odds of getting two that don't work, so I ordered another one. The weed eater head works flawlessly, but the self propelled drive did not work out of the box. Seems like design and quality issues that definatly do not represent the price. I have requested a refund and waiting to here back.

not ready for customer release

This review is for the 2013 model self propelled Pro-XL. The drive system has problems. The belt drive repeatedly has come off and I've only been able to keep it running by having a handy yardman who is capable of disassembling the unit and putting the belt back on. It takes an hour each time and it has happened 3 times in only 6 uses. Additionally, the unit lacks power. An old inexpensive "Swisher" has better torque. Perhaps the power is being used by the drive system, but its truly inadequate. The unit is a pain to back up. The forward drive locks it from going backwards and it has to be manually pushed forward before it will roll backwards. Overall, its a disappointing product and it will be returned.
Response from DR SupportThank you for giving us feed back on our product. We appreciate hearing what our customers have to say (good or bad). I am sorry you have had difficulties with this machine. I will submit your concerns to our product development department. If you haven't yet, please contact our technical support team to address these issues. We will be happy to assist you and look forward to hearing from you.

Not well-suited for hills
Posted by: Erik from Oregon on 05/31/2013
Rating:
I purchased the TRM875SD 8.75 PRO-XL in April 2013. I currently don't see it for sale on the DR Power website, but this is the closest model. Some of the same concerns may apply to this model. I was excited to use it on our two acres of wooded hillside, but regrettably I had to return it. Below are the reasons: 1. The 14? resin wheels were not able to bear the side load from driving on an incline. After less than four hours of operation, the wheel rims were flexing enough that the wheels were rubbing against the chassis. I could see that another hour or two and the spokes would begin to break. The plastic had become soft and slightly white from flexing back and forth as the wheel rotated and flexed. 2. The self-propelled wheels didn?t have sufficient torque to keep the trimmer moving over bumps or up hills. The self-propelled feature was helpful only on slight inclines. 3. The center of gravity was high enough that the trimmer wanted to roll over when operating on a moderate side hill. I was able to keep it from flipping over, but only with great effort. 4. The plastic bracket that secures the battery in place broke due only to the jarring of driving over bumps. 5. The bolt that holds the mow ball in place is easily bent. I very slightly bent mine by bumping the mow ball against a rock, which made the whole mow ball off-balance. I had to replace the bolt when this happened after only two hours of use. The problem is that the bolt is actually very long, so it doesn't take a very large hit to bend it. From all of these failures, you may think that I was treating the trimmer very roughly, but I was just using it on moderately rough terrain. I've used a push mower on this same terrain. Overall, I used it about five hours before giving up and returning it. If the trimmer had some wide, strong drive wheels like those on the self-propelled brush mower, it would have made a big difference. DR should create a "hillside" model of the trimmer that addresses some of these shortcomings and is designed for operation on slopes and rougher terrain.
Response from DR SupportThank you for leaving a review of the Trimmer. It is the TR3 model, not the current TR4 model. The information you provide will be forwarded to Product Development. We don't recommend using any of our equipment on slopes over 20 degrees for safety reasons and Engine lubrication.

2 broken in one day
Posted by: travelingmike from California on 05/29/2013

First one 25 minutes and back to dealer-the power drive not working. Great dealer gives me a second one-I use for 1.5 hours-power drive stops working again-also I had noticed from the get go the second one seemed underpowered from the first one. I was thinking the second one had the same problem as first which was the chain and sprocket were not lined up properly causing the chain to fall off. The second one whole different problem-the transmission/drive is broken-the dealer is not sure and will have to contact DR Power. It turns out 2 of his other new machines also have sprokets not lined up from the factory. The machine had great potential to work and I wanted to help me with my yard work. I would very much suggest using a local dealer. I would be even less happy sending back two machines on my time.
Response from DR SupportWe apologize for the issues and Thank you for posting a review. We appreciate hearing about how our products are performing “out in the field”! It’s reviews like this that will help us to keep on top of any situation that arises. We have a GREAT Dealer network out there and thank them also for working with you on this. It’s possible the Set Screw that hold the Transmission Sprocket wasn’t tight enough allowing the Sprocket to slip on the Shaft? This could cause the Chain to come off and/or the Transmission Output Shafts to become out of sync and cause damage.

DR Trimmer Self Propelled Difficult to Use
Posted by: Bon816 from North Carolina on 05/25/2013
Rating:
I purchased this self propelled trimmer because I have a hilly terrain. Upon receiving I was very excited to give it a try. I own other DR products and have been very happy with them. The part I dislike about the self propelled is the wheels will only go forward, you cannot pull this machine in reverse even when you are not running it. If I push it in my garage and have to pull it out the wheels are locked and I have to drag it out causing scuff marks. Also if I am cutting and have to turn it around you cannot pull it backwards to do so. I have never been so frustrated with a piece of equipment as I have this one. I have owned a self propelled lawn mower for some time that is clutch driven and do not have this problem. I called customer service to see if I was doing something wrong and the person I talked to said no, that the wheels will only go forward on the self propelled trimmer. It is not clutch driven it's the way the wheels are designed (poor design). I have since purchased another DR Trimmer that is not self propelled to give it a try,(and I am happy with it), because as I said I do as a rule love the DR Products. I was given 1 year trial for the DR Trimmer Self Propelled and I will be returning it. Self Propelled would have been great if I could have released clutch and pulled backwards when I needed to.
Response from DR SupportThank you for posting a review, we appreciate it! If you push the Trimmer forward without engaging the Bail Bar it should unlock the Transmission allowing the wheels to roll backwards.

A product waiting to find a use !!!!1

Having owned our Pro-XL Self Propelled DR for one season I now I feel I can make a comment as to it's performance, there are features which put it head a shoulders above other machines, such as the "mower ball" with it's super easy cord changing system, and the electric start facility #although the electrics are connected by clips which slip off every few minutes#,However, our unit came with the new resin wheels, which look very smart, but,as the one way roller bearings which deliver the drive are able to turn in their housings,I found that unless on flat ,smooth ground,it could not drag itself along, after some negotiation with the seller, these were changed for old type metal wheels with spokes,it will now self propel. I have never used a machine which becomes so totally covered in grass pulp when in use,the machine needs a pressure wash after every use,the grass also wraps around the left hand wheel, some design change is required there! In short,I find myself wondering why I am not useing my large hand held strimmer to cut the grass in the rough, and around trees,it is a much easier way of trimming awkward areas, and so much more versatile than struggling with 90 Lbs of DR.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review. We appreciate you taking the time to do it. We did have some issues with the TR3 Self Propelled Wheel Clutches when that model came out and have since fixed it. The Spoke Wheels you now have are for the previous TR2 model and are 2" smaller in diameter. This should increase your speed. You can contact our European Distributor to get the correct Wheels. I purchased my DR primarily for use in constructing and maintaining mountain bike trails. The compact body style and self-propelled feature are life savers in terrain that has lots of trees, hills and rocks. It is not bulky or heavy. I like the fact that there are multiple string levels on the mow ball support which let me adjust string height to the job at hand. My mower has survived several seasons of hard use with just the yearly oil, filter, belt changing. Occasionally the mow ball has to be replaced and string ordered. I did one time end up replacing the PTA lever. It was inexpensive and easy to replace. I find that the instruction manual is easy to follow so I am able to do all of my own repairs and yearly maintenance. Since my initial purchase of the mower, I have added a string caddie as well as a beaver blade for removing small trees on new trails. Both good purchases.

Satisfied with this machine

The first challenge was the rocky terrain of my two plus acres. The mow ball broke away, but I adjusted the handle to keep it off the rocks. Next, the mow ball assembly would not stay on, but I used Teflon tape on the bolt threads to secure it. Next, the self-propelled feature is not strong enough to climb the few grades I have. Adjusting the clutch has not corrected this. All other features are working fine. I'm satisfied with my 6.75 Trimmer/ Mover, but when I win the 8.75 I'll be more than satisfied!

It always starts easily, built to last, it does not clog or jam very often, easy to work on for anyone. My Neighbors and my wife have been impressed with what it can do. I've burned up two sets of bearings. The second set was sent to me free of charge because DR thought the bolt that holds the Ball on may have been bent. This too was free. I really like how DR backs thier products. Two years ago a mouse built a nest in it during the winter and on my first use in spring it caught on fire. I threw about 1/2 a galon of water on the hot mower. I thought to myself it will never run again. But i cleaned everything up and put it back together and it started right up. The only problem I've had is with the bearings. I was cutting 3ft high grass in a swamp when i had the first problem. It is a good product.

The combination of this product's heavy duty steel construction, easily adjustable handle height, self propelled feature, electric start capability (although I've never had to use it because the engine pull-starts so easily), an under carriage cover that protects drive belts and gears from damage and collecting debris, effortless trimmer line replacement/adjustment and a powerful engine that refuses to slow down under load result in a first class trimmer/mower that is truly worth its purchase price.

Ease of use is good, however with it only haveing one forward gear motion limits the forward movement. I find myself pushing it more that letting it push itself. The bottom plate that closes the gear housing and other components fills with grass very quickly. Which causes me to have to move the 2 screws and clean it frequently. I have inquired at your shop for replacement plate and was advised there wasn't one. My understanding is that there is a 2 forward motion trimmer on your market. And we can't wait to get one. We have owned 2 DR trimmers over the years. And is second to none.

It makes trimming so easy. Unfortunately it is old now and it has to be repaired yearly by my husband, but he gets it going every year. It makes it so much easier on the back than those hand held trimmers, and when used as a mower it leaves the grass short and beautiful. The tilting action on this trimmer allowes you to get right on the area without hitting and breaking siding or planters.

It has trimmed the high grass as advertised and I use the 155mm cord only since it does trim weeds or high grass better.

Being two 70 year old women who maintain 5 acres all by ourselves, we wouldn't know where to begin without your dr mower trimmer. We had so much brush and small trees to cut down when we moved here, it was unbelievable how we did it. Thanks to your mower, we clear many areas. It was great. We have two mower trimmers. Our first one needs a new engine, which we can't afford right now being on a fixed income. But in time. That is why we purchased our second one. It is a little smaller than the first. The first one cleared everything down for us, and the second one keeps it that way. I just gave our neighbor your new flyer, and he was thrilled . I know he will be ordering from you soon. He does a lot of cutting of trees etc. We have and always will be thrilled with your products and service. Your staff are always polite and so very helpful. They never loose patience with us , no matter how many questions we ask. Thank you so much for being there. Katy

Right now the alternator is out and going to have to order a new one unless you let me win a new machine...Then I will still order the part and two of us can mow at the same time. Works great around rocks and down the edge of the country road and around the ponds. It is easy to put the strings on and the ball makes it glide even better. Self propelled so that makes it even easier to use.

It is for this reason I checked no for Do You Recommend This Product. Both the new battery and the charger were purchased from you.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that you have had these issues. We appreciate you posting about them though. We will pass this information on to our Product Development people. If you are still having Charging issues, please contact Tech Support @ 800-687-6575 and we will be glad to help you!

This high wheel trimmer is excellent. I have purchased from other companies but they all broke down. When I discovered this one I decided to try it to my amazement. This one has held up, cuts through the toughest brush, easy to use and I can't say enough about it. I bought two of them just in case one broke down but neither have. I highly recommend this product.

Great trimmer with lots of power

I have had the trimmer mower for several years and it has never let me down. I use it on a 32 acre farm to trim around the barn, fences, out buildings and the house. The self propelled feature is great on the hills. A lot better than the commercial string trimmer that would kill my back in a short time.

6.75 pro trimmer battery start self propelled
Posted by: freda1078 from Texas on 04/07/2012
Rating:
I have had the 6.75 pro electric start for 10 months. We use it on the ranch to trim the fence line and around the edge of the arena. We have not had any problems with it at all. We got the beaver blade to take down some salt cedars around the tanks. It works without a problem and you don't have to bend over (old person here) to make ground level cuts. The support for the system has been outstanding. The folks are helpful and nice. I have ordered the battery charger and received quick shipment. A good product that gets a lot of use here in Texas. When we first got it, we bent a wheel somehow, they sent us a new one at no charge, Try to find that service somewhere else.

Our DR Trimmer/Mower is about 15 years old and still going strong. They've changed over the years, but it was the top of the line back then. We purchased it from a friend when it was about 10 years old and didn't hesitate spending the money when he told us it was a DR. We simply love our trimmer/mower and use it every single week. DR really does their homework when developing their products. They are all quality in build and use.

Easy height adjustment
Posted by: dtk1952 from Missouri on 04/07/2012
Rating:
This is an easy to operate machine. The main thing that I like is the easy height adjustment, just put your string in the right row for the height that you want. This has one of the easiest starting engines that I have seen on yard equipment. Even after 3 years it starts on the 1st or 2nd pull of the cord. This machine gets the cutting done, but don't expect miracles. It does bog down in heavy growth, even though it eventually gets the job done. I kind of think that DR's newest mower, the 8.75 SP Pro, would probably have ample power for heavy stuff.

I have owned two trimmer/mowers over the past twenty years. The first one was used to mow a large rocky piece of property. This was the only mower that could get the job done on rocky ground. The one I own now is used to keep the fence lines clear on a large piece of property. Works extremely well in tall wet grass. Would highly recommend the DR Trimmer/ Mowers.

Q.Why the poor ratings on the self propelled unit?
I would like to know in detail from other than sales person what if anything has changed in the unit from the units reviewed. I would like a self propelled but am afraid of having to return the unit after having used it. I am a seriously interested buyer and have uneven ground, some. Thanks ever so much I am looking for reliability as my local high end mower shop bad mouthed DR for not offering service if I brought It in. Regards Gerhard
A.Gerhard, Thank you for your inquiry. We had an issue with the belt guides, where the belts were slipping off due to the guide being too narrow. This issue has been resolved. We suspended the production line temporarily, accessed new, wider belt guides, and restarted the line. All previous customers were sent the new wider belt guide with instructions to install it at no cost. I hope this answers your questions.

Q.Why is the trimmer line snapping off on 8.75 trimmer mower
I have a 8.75 self-propelled timmer mower and I have tried 3 sets of trimmer line all installed per the mannual instructions and withing 30 seconds of the trimmer head spinning the line snaps off at the head. I have tried 2 different types of line including the blue line that came with the trimmer.
A.It sounds like your trimmer cord may have become dehydrated. This can cause it to become very brittle and brake easily. If you put some water in a bucket and let the cord soak for a day or two, this can often help the cord re-absorb moisture. If this does not seem to work or if you would like more information, please contact our Technical Support department toll free at 1-(888) 550-0062 Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 6:00pm Eastern and Saturday from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Q.Lubrication
Does this machine have an oil pump? Since it is advertised to operate on hill sides, the engine should have an oil pump versus splash lubrication.
A.All models of the DR Trimmer Mower have a splash lubrication system. With the Trimmer Mower you can safely trim and mow on slopes up to 20 degrees, which translates to a 36.4% slope. Continuous use on slopes steeper than 20 degrees may deprive the engine of adequate lubrication and damage components. Slopes greater than 20 degrees are also a major factor in loss of control and tip-over accidents. Because the Trimmer Mower is sometimes used on rough terrain, we always advise one to exercise caution and to mow across a slope, never up and down. Thanks for your inquiry.

Q.What kind of drive train does the Self propelled string trimmer have?
A.Thank you for your inquiry. The transmission for the Self Propelled Trimmer uses a belt from the engine shaft to the sealed gearbox which converts the torque to the axle via chains and a large gear on both sides of the inside of the wheels. It is a very efficient system that can be "feathered" by slipping the bail bar (clutch) to accommodate speeds anywhere between 0-3.0 mph. I hope that this answers your question sufficiently. If you'd like to order the Trimmer, please call us at 800-376-9637 or simply place it in your shopping cart online.

The charger should have an output of 12 volts at no more than 2 amps. - at 1 amp, the battery may need charging for as long as 48 hours - at 2 amps, the battery may need charging for as long as 24 hours We sell a trickle charger (part # 12541) for DR Power Equipment.

I have a horse riding arena surrounded by four board wooden fence. I'm looking for a self propelled unit that will reac under the the lost rail with some clearance.

Q.Could Synthetic oil be used on this motor? Would it benefit from its use? And most important would it void the warranty on the product if synthetic oil is used?
A.Thank you for contacting us and your interest in the DR Trimmer/Mower.

You will need to use standard HD 30 weight motor oil during the first 5 hours of run time, we call that the break in period. After that, you can use the Synthetic motor oil. Synthetic oil is a great lubricant and can extend the motor life. It will not void the warranty.

Q.My property has many horse/cow fences. I have to trim growth along those fences. Will I damage the fences or use a lot of string ?
A.The 8.26 Pro-XL, Self-Propelled Trimmer Mower has an offset frame design. This ensures that the cut reaches outside the wheel path to allow you to trim right up against foundations, fence lines and other obstacles. The amount of time the cords will last depends on the conditions. Constant use against sharp rocks or wire fence will wear the cords down faster. However, the DR cutting cord is heavier, split resistant and have a solid core which helps them to last longer. To prevent any potential damage to fencing, garden borders, wooden siding and to save the cord from wearing out or breaking, we offer the TrimSafe Guard. With the Guard mounted on the Trimmer, the tips of a full length cord are inset 1" from the outer bar. This will prevent any accidental damage to fences, siding, etc. The TrimSafe Guard can be viewed at the following web link: http://www.drpower.com/shop.axd/Search?keywords=trimsafe+guard If you have more questions or would like to place an order by phone, please call our Sales Team at toll free 1-888-550-0062 and our Sales Representatives will be happy to help you. A.As the engine on this machine is a 4 cycle engine, it has separate oil and fuel reservoirs. Upon assembly you will want to ensure that you add fuel and the accurate amount of oil to the engine since it will not ship with fuel or oil in it. Ensure that you use only 30 weight, high detergent oil. Q.Does the 1 quart gas tank take a mixture of gas and oil or just gas? If so, what kind of gas?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The DR 8.26 Pro-XL Trimmer/Mower uses straight, regular unleaded gas, we recommend non-ethanol gas if you can find it in your area. If non-ethanol is not available, we recommend using a fuel additive designed specifically for the ethanol gas. We do offer a fuel additive for it, here is the web page;

Q.We have a home at 9000 elevation in Colorado and have a lot of rocks on it. On the self propelled Pro-XL, can you slow it down for hilly terrain and rocks, and are the reconditioned units just as good as new ones?
A.Our Self-Propelled Trimmer/Mower features a variable speed drive. By feathering the lever you can choose at which pace you mow. This is a very convenient feature which allows you to adjust your speed to match mowing conditions. Our reconditioned equipment is returned within it's trial period. It is checked over and tested by our mechanics and re-sold in a like new condition. It features all of the same warranties, promotions and benefits as a new piece of equipment. To check up to date pricing and inventory please contact a Sales Rep at 1-800-376-9637. Thank you for your interest. FC

Q.Are both wheels powered on the 8.75 Pro-XL?
A.Thank you for your question. Power will be sent to both wheels when using the Walk Behind Self Propelled Trimmer. A 3/8” x 13” V-belt drives the transmission from the engine. The transmission drives two chains which drive the axle. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Q.Does the 8.75 Pro-XL model "shift" to the side, to offset the cutting pattern to one side, to cut outside the path of the wheels? Can I cut along a wall or a fence without having to swerve the head to the left every half-step along the way? How many inches outside the wheel path does it cut, when in the offset position?
A.Thank you for your interest in the DR Walk Behind Trimmer. This unit has an asymmetrical frame. The nose centered asymmetrically off the frame so the cords will stick outside of the wheelbase 2.5” on the left hand side. The Walk-behind Trimmer is designed so it can trim up close to fence lines, houses, and any other area where close trimming is important. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
