Overview

You'll never swing a splitting maul again.

Not when you can split wood faster and easier with the Electric/Hydraulic DR Wood Splitter.

Small in size, but plenty powerful, this machine does the work of much larger gas-powered splitters, but without any of the hassles. And it costs much less, too!

Plug the DR Wood Splitter into any standard household outlet (110v) and you're ready to get started. Then just load a log, push a lever and watch it split tough hardwood logs up to 10" in diameter and 20.5" long in seconds. Split a little at a time or work all day.

Features:

  • Quiet, no gas or oil...you can even use it indoors
  • Uses any ordinary 110-volt outlet
  • Splits logs up to 10” thick

My wife wanted to split our firewood - this splitter was her Valentine Day present. She loves it, it is a workhorse, We heat with wood, mostly fir, about 8 cords a year, and just finished our 8th year with this machine. Today I downloaded the service manual, to see if it required any service. For the first time, I learned about a Air Bleed Screw, Dipstick, sharpen the blade, etc. I have been a bad boy, but will do some service very soon. We leave it outdoors all year, with a tarp cover for the rain and snow seasons - just to0 lazy to pull it to the barn, I guess. In spite of my shoddy treatment of this machine, it still seems to love us, and perform flawlessly!

I've only had a chance to split a wheelbarrow load, but it worked great. Even a gnarley piece split with no problem. If I had one complaint, it wouldn't be with the splitter, but with the information about it. Know where did I see that it came with hydraulic fluid already in it. I looked all over for the right kind, only do find out it already had fluid in it. You should mention that it comes "ready to go"!

I have been using the wood splitter to refill my wood rack in my garage. What I like, is I can take it out to the front of the garage...split 4-5 logs...put it back and clean up. The time spent on splitting logs is minimal. Glad I made the purchase!!!

The DR5-Ton is great! I'm 69 years old and was diagnosed with cancer. When the unit arrived, I put in in my garage, built a small table for it and immediately started splitting logs into more manageable sizes. I felt good about the whole process and can easily load smaller logs into our wood burning stove. Thank you DR!!!

I use firewood for grilling and a firepit in the yard so I did not need a high volume big splitter. After a lot of research I purchased this splitter. This one works great; I have split pecan, and several species of oak with it. I split some water oak that had been cut for over a year and it split it with no problem. It doesn't take up much space, I don't have to worry about old gas or maintaining a gas engine. I am extremely pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone. It's great splitter for the price.

I searched the internet and chose DR because they made an entire line of log splitters. Bought it from a local dealer for the lake. Works great! Fantastic labor saving device. Breaker kicks off when necessary eliminating damage to unit. Resets quickly and easily. No down side!
Response from DR SupportThank you for the feedback on your DR® 5-Ton Electric Log Splitter. Sometimes the distance from your primary power source does affect how the log splitter will perform. To ensure peak performance, your all electric DR® 5-Ton Log Splitter should be used as close to your primary power source as possible. We recommend that your log splitter be no more than 50 feet away from the power source. Please note that if the power source is a remote location, such as a shed or barn that doesn't have its own breaker box, the distance of the outbuilding to the main power source should be considered as well. For a distance up to 25 feet, we recommend a 12-gauge extension cord. For distances between 25 feet and up to 50 feet, the recommendation is a 10-gauge extension cord. We hope these tips prove helpful and that you’ll enjoy many years of successful wood splitting with the DR®. We appreciate your business.

I love this splitter! I buy my wood already split, but it’s in huge 1/2 pieces or larger! I had been using a hatchet and sledge hammer to cut it down and spent most of my time trying to pry the hatchet out of the wood! NO MORE! I set up the splitter on a heavy table. To run it; put a log in the tray and pull down on the handle. That’s it!! Couple of warnings; It’s very cold here, so like the directions say, you do have to run it back and forth a few times to get the hydraulics ready before you start. I also found it helpful to use a shop rag to wipe the wood debris buildup off the tray. 95% of the time, the splitter doesn’t have to go very far before the wood splits all the way down, so it’s quick! The slowest part of the process is carrying the wood to and from the splitter! I am using the extension cord and cover I bought with it. Just love it!!

This machine was to replace an electric one I had used for many years but the motor went bad. My earlier one had a foot pedal that was much more convenient. I also had trouble trying to get the DR to turn on; had to push the button about 10-15 times! As a 75 year old with back problems, I ended up pushing the lever with my foot while holding on to the wall. Not as convenient but I was able to get the job done. Only had 2 sticks that it refused to split.

DR 5 ton log splitter
Posted by: James Musil from Joliet, IL on 08/19/2014

I've had the splitter now for 2 weeks, and so far, so good. I'm splitting 16"-20" seasoned maple between 8"-14" in diameter. The larger logs can be a challenge, but I use "COMMON SENSE" when splitting wood. Split the bigger pieces in half or quarter them. If you think that its the machines fault because it won't split large pieces of wood, and don't understand basic principles of mechanics and hydraulics, you shouldn't be using this machine. It has limitations, which are just fine if you use this machine correctly. Don't overheat the machine,(letting it run without using it), or it will overheat. All in all it's a good machine for the everyday home owner.

Delivery of our new splitter was so fast we couldn't believe it. Two full days after we ordered it was at our door and at work an hour latter. We set the splitter up on the small garden trailer connected to our lawn tractor, perfect height and started splitting. Quiet smooth and effortless it went through almost every piece we put through it. So easy to use and great to just be able to split a little at a time whenever we have some spare time. We will burn around 3 cords this coming winter and so happy to have a simple and quiet partner on the job. We hope for years of reliable service, Thanks for a great little machine. Just received the DR 5-Ton electric log splitter yesterday and couldn't wait to try it first thing today. I split about a cord of wood, some seasoned and some green, both pine and oak. So far so good, will write a more complete review once I use it longer. One thing I was very happy to discover is that this splitter fits inside my PowerWagon. While waiting for it to arrive, I had all kinds of ideas as to how to build a low bench/table to put the splitter on. Once I found out it fit in my PowerWagon, I was good to go. I put the wheel end to rear and had to put a 2x 6 under the wheels so the log splitter operating handle would go all the way down. Worked great.

Great value. The only drawback is that it must be placed on a table to raise the work height and that is hard to do alone. The guard for the actuator lever broke because the design is not robust for this application.

I am sorry to say I can't recommend this splitter. Maybe the wood i am trying to split has dried out too much making it harder than usual. However, I thought 5 ton would be sufficient to split this wood. I guess I was wrong.
Response from DR SupportWe’re sorry that the 5 Ton Electric Wood Splitter hasn’t lived up to your expectations. We appreciate you leaving a review though! The splitter should handle most logs that are within the 10” diameter, 20” length, but there may be some that are too hard &/or knotty. Thanks again for the review.

Great product with limitations
Posted by: mike666 from on 06/24/2013
Rating:
This is an excellent splitter for kindling making. I split a lot of hard aged pre-split oak. If the wood has cracks the splitter will do just fine. If the wood is solid, you must work your way from the edge to the center or the unit will stall. Do not attempt to split wood with knots in it as this will cause the spliiter to stall. For me, I only use this splitter to make kindling for fire starters. It lacks the power to do much else. If you use this machine in cold tempetures, it will take a while to get going.
Response from DR SupportWe appreciate you taking the time to post a review. Thanks for doing that! To ensure full power, use the splitter without an extension cord. This splitter is designed for smaller, easier to split logs and does make great kindling. That said, it will split most logs that are within the 10” diameter & 20.5” length.

Saw similar splitters at slightly lower prices. Called the sellers to find out if parts would be available in 3 or 5 years. None could say yes. One told me that parts would only be available during the warranty period. Also read the instructions and use a 12 gauge extension cord on a 20 amp breaker outlet. I tried it on a 35 FT 14 gauge extension on a 15 amp outlet and it just hummed without moving. Otherwise it is great.

this is the second splitter from DR. Loved the first one. Bought the splitter table and side shelves made the work so much easier. This new one though has two things I wish they had carried over on the current model. There are no side shelves & the machine cannot be secured to the DR table that came with the first splitter. I am going to set up a means to secure the splitter to the table. the table & side shelves save so much on the back working a day splitting. Would I recommend the newer model yes.

Great product
Posted by: Flintstone from Maryland on 06/19/2013
Rating:
This is my 3rd DR product and, as with the others, I couldn't be more satisfied. I was hesitant to buy an electric wood splitter primarily because I was worried about its ability to handle larger logs and being slow. I've now split at least 3 cords and am absolutely thrilled with it. It readily handles 12-14" locust, oak and maple and barely strains even with 10-12" hickory. It's slower than a gas-powered splitter but not a lot. For the average person who heats with wood (which we do exclusively), it's more than adequate. For a commercial operation, probably not. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for performance is that it definitely doesn't like cold weather. I didn't bother to change to ATF when the temperature dropped and the internal breaker trips repeatedly when the temperature is below around 40F. Once it's warmed up though, even well below freezing, it's not a problem. The other thing worth mentioning is that you should definitely pay attention to the instructions about it being a one-person operation. As with any splitter, a log with twist in the grain such as locust can turn into a projectile when it splits and the pieces can be thrown quite a distance with considerable force. Keep people away from that end. Other than that, it seems significantly safer and easier to use than a gas-powered splitter and the much lower noise level and lack of fumes are a welcome change. The quality and build seem very good and I fully expect to be using the splitter for decades.

I already owned an older hydraulic splitter that works great, but I was looking for something smaller that my wife and I could use to split the smaller diameter white oak trees on our property in Missouri. One of my friends has owned a DR 5 ton splitter for years, and he recommended it to me. Thus far, it has performed as advertised, and it's much easier to set-up and use than our hydraulic splitter. My wife likes to use the DR splitter, My only complaint with it was the inadequate packaging around the electric control box. Both of the units you sent me had shattered control boxes. Fortunately, your engineering department was able to send me a new control box, which I installed myself. In the future, I would probably purchase products from a DR store, rather than count on a damage-free delivery.

I bought this splitter in the 6 ton electric. My first week of using it I noticed the dip stick for the hydraulic fluid was stripped out. They exchanged it for another brand new model. I was impressed.3 years later a spring that controls the ram return broke. When I called to order a new part I was told that they no longer carry that model. The company that made it for DR closed it's doors. Great, now I have a perfectly good splitter that does not work. And there are no parts for repair work. Pray your's doesn't brake.

Q.Can this 5 ton electric log splitter be operated at below 40 degrees F?
A.Yes, it is ok to operate this machine under 40 degrees fahrinheit. The main thing you will want to check before doing so is that the hydraulic fluid used is rated for use in the appropriate temperature. For temperatures moderately below freezing, Dexron ATF can be used in place of hydraulic fluid. When changing hydraulic fluid, you will want to make sure you completely drain the reservoir before adding a different fluid to the machine. Q.Can this be stored upright? If using an extension cord does it have to be a certain gauge
A.Unfortunately this splitter can not be stored upright because the operating handle is on the very end of the unit. It is generally not a good idea to store a splitter like this upright anyway because they hydraulic fluid will all stay at one end and if left this way for a long period of time, the seals that are not staying lubricated can eventually dry out. Q.How long can the wood splitter be run without running into heating issues?
A.Thank you for contacting us.

The DR 5 Ton Electric Log Splitter can run for many hours with out over heating. The main reason for the splitter to over heat is the use of an improper extension cord. We recommend a 12 gauge extension cord for up to 25 feet in length and a 10 gauge extension cord for up to 50 feet in length.
