Overview

Mounts quickly, with no pump or PTO to fuss with!

Our 3 pt hitch model delivers unprecedented splitting speed from your tractor's hydraulics—up to 3x the speed of the competition. Cycle times range from 3-9 seconds, depending on your tractor. Throw burly hardwood logs up to 24" in diameter onto the heavy-duty log tray and watch your productivity go up by 300%. The splitter attaches in minutes to category 1 hitches with hydraulic couplings and there's no PTO pump to fuss with. For 25-65HP tractors (2,500 PSI recommended for best performance).

All of our Dual-Action Log Splitters use a simple innovation to take a big chunk of time out of log splitting projects. Ordinary splitters split in one direction only, forcing you to reverse the ram and wait until it returns to it's starting point before you can load another log. But with two-way splitting, that waiting game is a thing of the past. And we offer your choice of power: gasoline, electric, or 3-point hitch!

    Product Summary:
  • Tonnage: up to 13-Ton (tractor dependent)
  • Category 1 tractor with hydraulic couplings
  • X2 Ram, provides 2-way splitting
  • Hydraulic Rating: 3800 psi
  • Max. Log Length: 20"
  • Max. Log Diam.: 24"
  • Avg Cycle Time: 6 seconds

Splits great, but needs better quality control

This splitter has split everything we've tried on it, and works great. However, quality control in manufacturing and design aren't perfect. We had to replace the original valve because the it was leaking oil badly; we still haven't gotten the 3-point hitch assembly put together the way it is supposed to work - the pieces are the wrong size. But we've been able to get it up and running, and the support people at DR have been very helpful.
Response from DR SupportThank you for your feedback on the DR® Dual Action Log Splitter. We would love to be able to call you to see if everything is working fine now. We are unable to locate your customer file with the little information in this review. Please give us a call at 1-800-376-9673 as we would appreciate hearing back from you and offering support as needed. Thank you for your business.

Got the splitter quick. The directions and some parts were missing. Called up they overnighted the missing items after asking a manager. The directions do say you need to get the fittings that fit your tractor (understandable). The only thing is they say the fitting size is NTP 1/2. I ordered The from my Kubota dealer. When I brought the lines in the fittings are actually 3/4. They had remove the fittings on the line and put the 1/2 on them. I put it together with no problems. I thought with the missing parts and wrong hoses this was a bad way to start but the splitter works great. I also bought the 3 point chipper which came as described and works very well.

Tried some motorized splitters before I bought and very glad I did, why have another motor to keep up and deal with if you have a tractor. does great job splitting my oak logs, with the 2 way splitting action it works faster than 2 of us. I recommend this to tractor owners needing a wood splitter.

I'm basically pleased with the DR Dual-Action Log Splitter. It allows for fast splitting of firewood because of its dual-action. The only negative for me is that I have to be very careful to block my wood shorter than I normally use in my fireplace, because the log splitter will not handle logs longer that 20".

I own a DR chipper (18hp B&S), an the DR Pro Brush mower (16.5hp B&S),and the performance I have received from them have been better than I expected so when I decided I needed a splitter I knew it would be a DR. But being that I'm one of those shoppers that never buys on a whim I shopped and read up on all the highly rated splitters available for about a year and a half. Putting it off until I finally injured my hand using my wedges an maul not once but twice in 3 days. So I said thats it got on the phone and talked to Brendon and got that baby on its way to Texas. Within 10 days of ordering it I was splitting wood like a Pro. It assembled easily and hooked up to my Kabota L5030 (48HP) just fine. The height and the side tables make splitting easy. I set my rpms at 2000 and never have I come across a log that has given me any problem. I cut my logs at 20" and they have been up to 26" in diameter no problem. At 13 ton rating I think it is underated. So why did I wait so long? Just comparing I guess but I wished I had not taken so long. So if you are shopping do not hesitate to purchase this one you will not regret it.

Works very well; needs user/ engineering improvements to rank higher.

What needs attention: 1) Cross bracing forward of top link attachment needs to be notched or lowered; otherwise the top link will bend when the splitter is fully raised. 2) Needs wheels on operator end for moving around when not attached to the tractor. 3) Bolts on underside should be reversed so hydraulic hoses will rub on bolt heads and not on threaded bolt ends. 4) Holes in the two hydraulic hose clamps are too small for the appropriate bolt. Really like the two way action. Trays are very good. Sturdy construction. Recommend it to others.

This is a very good product. The lead time between order and delivery is too long. I thought I was going to get an e-mail confirmation when shipped, but the first notification I received was when I got a call from the trucking firm the day that it arrived locally. Anyway, the Splitter is much better than I expected. It works great, is very fast with the dual action, and the up-down adjustment with the 3-point is great.

For most wood it does a very good job but the first knotty log it WILL NOT do anything. So I must be creative when splitting these. Most real knotty logs I must still use my big brothers 22ton huskee splitter to split these. You would think having the splitter connected to the tractor hydraulics that this splitter would do much better than a gas driven splitter but nope it won't.
Response from DR SupportThanks for posting a review. We are sorry to learn you are not fully satisfied with the purchase of your Dual Action Splitter. The splitting force is up to 13 tons depending on the tractor hydraulics. Knotty logs can take some major force to get through. Thanks again for the review.

I've had this log splitter for a few months now and it is performing flawlessly. The dual action feature is a great idea. The 5.1 gpm hydraulic pump on my John Deere 3032E provides adequate volume to operate the splitter at its rated speed. The only drawback is that I had to modify the upper attachment point to fit my Quick-hitch, as the upper pin is recessed too far into the frame to reach with the upper hook. By reversing the lower mounting arms I was able to attach an extension to the upper pin mounting.

I have a Kubota BX25 loader backhoe and was unsure if the splitter would work with a small machine. Both DR Tech support and Kubota told me it "should". the Kubota is rated at 23 HP and 6.2 gpm flow rate. No one could tell me pressure. I bought it anyway thinking if it didn't work I could return it. This splitter is amazing! Its fast and so far has handled 24 to 26" fresh cut maple and oak without laboring. I made a stand for it with wheels for easy storage and to use it in the garage with 10' hydraulic lines to keep the tractor outside. Now I can split wood in warmth and quiet. The backhoe also does not have to be removed to use it. The splitter is solid and built extremely well to stand up to the use it will get. I have split about 2 cords so far and the paint on the end stops don't even show any sign of use. I highly recommend this product and if this splitter is indicative of the quality of all DR products this will not be the last DR product I purchase. Thank you DR for building such a well made fair priced unit. For anyone with a Kubota BX25 you need to be sure to use only Parker hydraulic connectors H2-62 female x 1/4" and H2-63 Male x 1/4 " I used 3/8" hose and a reducing coupling to go to the splitters 1/2"mpt.. run the tractor around 2800 rpm.

My husband has been looking for a log splitter for some time. As a builder, he works hard during the week so spending all day splitting wood wasn't really how he wanted to spend his time. He'd asked friends, looked around.....and was headed toward a 35 ton, $1800 splitter. We do already own a tractor and i saw an ad in Mother Earth news so we checked out the video. Excited about the dual action and not having to wait on a reload time, we ordered it up! It got here and he saw the 13 ton cylinder:( We had failed to notice that in the specs. Before spending the day finding the right fittings, we actually called in to see whether we made a mistake in ordering such a "little" splitter. I wish we could remember our salesman's name because he assured us we'd stand back and be amazed. Encouraged, we got it set up and he couldn't have described my husband any better. His words were: "It splits like a big dog!" My husband can not believe how quick and fast this is. Even the gnarly stuff. We have olive and cottonwood on our property. Without a machine, some of it is un-splittable. Not anymore! Tonite, he went out there just for the fun of it! He has piles of wood around the property already. It'll be a warm winter with extra time for fun now! We'd buy it again and will absolutely recommend it to our friends! Thanks DR for an awesome product.

Q.I have a Kioti CK 35 HST with rear hydrolic connections. Will this splitter work on my tractor?
A.The Dual Action Three Point Hitch log splitter comes ready to mount to a category 1 hitch. If your tractor has a category 2 hitch, you will need the appropriate pins to connect it. It also comes equipped with 1/2" NPT male connection hydraulic hose fittings. If your tractor is not equipped to connect to these, you should be able to find some quick disconnects at your local tractor supply. The hydraulic hoses on this splitter are ~38" long which is adequately long enough to connect to most rear hydraulics however if this is not long enough to reach your hydraulic connections from the end of your TPH arms, you may need some hose extensions.

The performance of this machine will be based off your tractor specifications. The greater PSI of your tractor hydraulics, the greater the force of the wedge (2500 PSI is optimal and maximum this machine is rated for). The higher your tractors hydraulic flow rate is (GPM), the faster the ram will move. With these specifications, you will want to keep in mind the age of your tractor. If your tractor is older, the specifications may not be as high as they were when it was new.

Q.Loader Hydro?
Will this work using the front end loader hydro connections? Kubota L2800 - 30 HP engine.
A.Our 3-Point Hitch Dual-Action Log Splitter is designed for tractors that have rear auxiliary hydraulic connections. We do not have connections for front hydraulic connections. You can check with your tractor dealer and see if there is an accessory that is available that will allow the rear connection. Thanks for your inquiry.

Q.I have jd955 2500psi, but 7.2 gpm. Do I have to have tractor at high throttle to get best performance
A.Tractor requirements are a Category 1 hitch with hydraulic couplings and the horsepower must be between 25-65 HP. Maximum and ideal pressure rating on the pump is 2500 PSI. If your tractor is at 2500 PSI, you can expect up to 13 tons of pressure. Tractors with a low PSI will not get the 13 ton pressure and will have less splitting force. The cycle time is determined by the tractor's pump flow rate. Nine gallons per minute is ideal, anything less, it will split the wood but the cycle time will be very slow.

Maximum and ideal pressure rating on the pump is 2500 PSI. If your tractor is at 2500 PSI, you can expect up to 13 tons of pressure. Q.Expected Cycle Time, 3000 PSI, 5.45 GPMThe published cycle time at max rating for this DR is 6 seconds. What is considered one cycle, complete travel in one direction or complete travel from one end, to the other, and back to original starting point? With that in mind, my front auxiliary hydraulics are rated at 3000 PSI and 5.45 GPM. What can I expect for cycle time, per answer to definition of cycle above?
A.Typically the cycle time for a log splitter would be the time it takes for the splitting wedge to split the log and return back to starting position. Normally this would be how long it takes a splitter to make one split. With our Dual Action Splitter, the 6 second rating is actually an average time for travel in one direction so the splitting speed can easily be compared to other splitters.

At 5.45 GPM you can expect the extend time of the ram to be roughly 6.2 seconds and the return or retract of the ram to be roughly 5.2 seconds.

Q.WE HAVE A STID STEER WITH STARDARD HYDRAICS WILL THE FITTINGS FOR THIS LOG SPLITTER WORK WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL PARTS?
WDSD3PX LOG SPLITTER SKID STEER DAEWOO 1760XL
A.Thank you for your inquiry. This answer comes from our manual. There are many different types and sizes of Tractor Hydraulic Connectors. For this reason the Splitter Hoses do not have Connectors on the ends. This allows you to purchase the correct type/size for your application. You may need to bring your Connectors to the supplier to ensure you get the correct mating Connectors for your Tractor. The Splitter Hose threads are 1/2" NPT Male where the Connector you will purchase attaches to the Hose. I hope that this answers your question. Q.I have a AG KING 4540 Tractor, 45HP, I think it is around 2000 for pressure at back 3PT Hitch, Do you think it would get close to max potential out of splitter
A.The optimum pressure for the Splitter is 2500psi. The 2000 that you tractor puts out will be close, but not quite enough for the full potential. It may struggle with larger, harder sized pieces.

I have a JD 5300 - 2750 psi - 11.4 gpm pump flow. Do I need to worry about exceeding the 2500 psi you advocate? Do I need to worry about too many gpm? Are these rates controlled by lowering tractor rpm? thanx
A.The JD 5300 is fine to use with our 3 Point Hitch Splitter. The Splitter is rated to 4000 PSI. You can lower the pressure by lowering the RPM's, but you shouldn't need to.

Q.what is the hitch width?
I have a John Deere 1023e with a hitch width of 24inches is that big enough? If not is there anyway is can move the pins so it will fit?
A.The Log Splitter uses hydraulic hoses on your tractor and quick-connect fittings fit to the hoses on your tractor. Tractor requirements are for a Category 1 hitch, between 25 and 65 horsepower. 2500 PSI is recommended and 9 gallons per minute is ideal.

Q.Is there a recommended PTO pump to mount on my BX22 to run this splitter effectively?
Would that be a better approach than using the tractor hydraulics? I could probably get higher GPM. Note that the PTO HP is slightly low, I think it is 22 versus the recommended 25.
A.This splitter is designed to run off hydraulic couplings pre existing on your tractor. Not a PTO shaft and pump. Your tractors on board hydraulic pump will be what runs the splitter. Refer to your tractors specifications for the flow rate of it's pump.

Q.I have a 95 HP Kubota, Cat 2.
You state upper limit of HP is 65. Any problems hooking this product to my tractor?
A.I recommend that you give us a call at 1-888-550-0062, option 2 or 3 and speak to our tech team. The Dr 3- Point Hitch Dual Action Log Splitter is set up for a catagory 1 tractor. Your 95 HP Kubota is larger than that, we will need more information from you to determine if this will work on your tractor.

Q.What tonnage and cycle time can I expect with a 9.1GPM pump and 2276PSI?
The main pump on my tractor is rated at 9.1 gpm and the relief valvle is set at 2276 psi. What tonnage would I get out of this splitter and what would the cycle time be? When you measure cycle time, is that the time it takes for the wedge to travel in one direction or to split the log then return to the starting position?
A.If your tractor has a catgeory 1 hitch with hydraulic couplings and is 25 - 65 HP, both the flow rate of the pump cylinder and pressure rating on the pump of your tractor is ideal. The cycle time will be fast and you should receive close to 13 tons of splitting power. Cycle time is determined by the tractor's pump flow rate.

Q.I have a Ford 3000 gas tractor--will this work on that and if so how do I connect the hydraulics?
A.The Dual Action splitter has quick connect couplings that attach to your tractors rear hydraulic fittings. It is then run from your tractors onboard hydraulic pump and fluid. Therefore the tonnage and the speed of the splitter is dictated by your tractors horsepower and your pumps flow rate. Thank you.

Q.Is this electric? How long of a log will it take?
A.The log splitter uses hydraulic hoses on your tractor and quick-connect fittings fit to the hoses on your tractor. Using your hand, you need to push a valve control handle to move the wedge towards the log in order to split it. Splitting capacity is 24" in diameter and 20" in length.
