Features
Flywheel

Massive Solid-Steel Flywheel

The PRO model’s chipping knife is mounted to a flywheel that is cut from heavy steel (3/4" thick) and weighs 17 pounds. The spinning flywheel provides the inertia necessary for the chipper knife to power through knotty, hardwood branches at an incredible 45 bites per second.

Hopper

Over-Sized Hoppers

The Pro model’s chipper hopper opening (10” x 13.5”) accepts 3” branches with little or no trimming of side branches. The shredder hopper opening is 12” x 18”, big enough to accept multiple stalks of quarter-inch thickness or less along with side branches and leaves.

Hammers

Free-Swinging Hammers

The Pro model features 24 free-swinging hammers that shred garden waste, lawn clippings, and weeds into useful, nutrient-rich mulch for your garden and flower beds. Each long-lasting hammer has three positions, allowing you to switch to a fresh set of shredding edges when performance starts to decline.

Frame

Heavy-Duty Steel Frame

Many chippers look like they're built to sit in one place. DR Chippers are made to be on the move, so you can get your chipper wherever you need to be on your property. We use rugged, welded-steel frames designed to withstand transport over punishing terrain year after year.

Yard Tow

It’s Yard Towable

The Pro model includes a pin-hitch, so you can transport it to your jobsite with a lawn tractor or ATV.

Engine

Powerful Vanguard Engine

The Pro model Chipper/Shredder is powered by a high-end Vanguard model Briggs & Stratton engine. With 14.50 ft./lbs. of torque, it has plenty of power for tough projects and outstanding durability.

Clutch

Commercial-Grade Clutch

The commercial-grade centrifugal clutch used on our chippers is similar to those used in well drilling. There is no load on the engine until it reaches 1,600 rpm. If you do manage to find a branch tough enough to slow the engine to 1,600 rpm, the clutch will automatically disengage the engine until it's back up to speed.

unit clogs up very easy with palm frons, Bolts holding the gas tank on vibrated out within first 3 hours of use. Hard time finding replacement shoulder bolts.
Response from DR SupportThanks for the review, we appreciate it! We’re sorry about the bolts! As a safety check, you should always check to make sure everything is secure before using any piece of equipment.

Palm Fronds can be very hard to shred. Size & moisture content play a big factor. They seem to shred better while still moist & obviously the smaller the better. Make sure to move your Chipper/Shredder occasionally so the debris output doesn’t build up too much & clog.

We will contact you to discuss this further.

This is my second season with my 14.50 Pro Chipper/Shredder as my year of ownership overlapped two growing cycles. I wonder when I'll FINALLY have to sharpen the chipper blade? The thing must be made of REALLY GOOD steel as it Keeps on cutting like new despite hard maple and pine. The same is true for the shredder knives. My only issues are noted by many other reviewers, the smallish wheels (which aren't much of a transport issue on my flat yard), the filling and packing of processed debris under the unit, and the cooling issue. The latter thing is most troubling, or potentially so if one is not constantly removing debris from the B&S Starter/Blower Inlet. It would seem that a cylindrical screen could be fashioned to provide for better cooling air filtration. Also, a shield over the engine would be a most welcome thing when using the shredder hopper. Inevitably debris finds its way over the hot engine, and that's not a good thing. I've even thought of reversing the hopper so the safety baffle could be then folded back over the engine. Those caveats aside, this is a superior bit of engineering and VERY heavily built. Worth every penny.

Awesome chipper/shredder

I spent some time looking at a range of chipper/shredders of different brands that would fit my needs in a price range of $1500 - $2500. In that looking I kept coming back to this dr model based on specs, performance, and reputation on quality, made the purchase. Had the unit shipped to me, assembled it and started using it right away. Throwing different yard debree and waste with in specs into it, and wow im so pleased of its performance and build. I love how fast it eats up larger branches in the chipper side without missing a beat. The discharge shoot you do have to clear the pile on the ground from time to time. Which doesn't bother me too much the more i use it. The only improvement like everyone else has said is putting a handle on the hitch for easier connecting to riding mower or atv. Very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend.

This unit flawlessly shreds and chips everything I feed it within unit specs. Only two improvements I see needed and one gripe. D-handle on frame would be nice to help while mounting on ATV and maneuvering unit around when not. Wider wheelbase needed due to it being very tippy while transporting over uneven terrain. Engine backfires when slowly decelerating for a shut-down from couple hours of operation . I will be installing a spark arrester due to that engine condition.

Well-built, heavy duty efficient machine.
Posted by: Lance from Ohio on 10/17/2013
Rating:
DR has engineered and produced a really heavy duty chipper shredder for home use. It is vastly superior to the old Craftsman that I inherited from my father! That machine was underpowered and too small. This machine devours pine branches, maple tree limbs and leaves of all kinds. It's shredder has the welcome feature of four cutting edges per hammer blade. The chipper blade must be made of stern stuff as it has gone many hours without showing signs of dulling. Paint quality is exceedingly good, and the steel throughout is of heavy gauge. This machine will last longer than me! Power is ample for home use. The big Briggs engine maintains a constant tempo as added by the heavy flywheel effect of the chipper/shredder rotor. The only improvement that I can suggest is some kind of shielding of the engine from the shredder hopper. That is, a cover that would deflect materials from spilling over on the engine would be a welcome addition. One reviewer noted that the air intake for the cooing blower tended to fill the engine fins with dirt and debris. Perhaps some kind of ducting or screening is necessary to keep the engine from plugging and overheating with chipped or shredded debris. I note that leaves and lighter materials tend to gather on the blower housing, thus, blocking the flow of cooling air. That is not a good thing. I note that modern farm combines have dealt with this issue in self-cleaning screens on coolant air intakes. Perhaps a simplified version is in order for the Briggs engine on the chipper shredders.

This chipper/shredder makes easy work of the smaller branches and does an excellent job with the brush and other small debris from the cuttings. The larger branches chip well too but you have to take your time to keep the blade from slowing down too much. I really like how this machine performs.

Chipper/Shredder Heaven
Posted by: AlaskaGardner from Alaska on 08/15/2013

Basically already assembled out of the crate. Engine started on the 1st pull, always a good sign. Had a pile of roughly chipped brush, 6' to 9" long chips, from the neighbor. The machine took that 4 cy pile and transformed it into 1" finely ground chips in 1 hour. Works amazingly well. No more hauling brush to the Anchorage woodlot for this family and the boss has excellent mulch for the garden that will keep those weeds at bay. Being an engineer, I always have a desire to make something better. Recommend larger diameter pneumatic wheels or structurally positioning the unit higher off the ground, since the chips fall out the bottom and need to continually be removed by hand into a separate pile. Need more time, but I think I am ready for a long term relationship with this chipper/shredder.

Excellent quality
Posted by: docbrucew from Colorado on 08/02/2013

I have been through 5 or 6 different chipper/shredders over the years. I usually mulch until I run out of gas, it gets dark, or the machine breaks down. In the past, the machine breakdown seemed to be the most common event. So far my new DR machine has not broken down, makes mountains of mulch, and is obviously built better than any machine I've ever had. All the metal is thicker and overall the machine is more durable. The blade has remained sharp at a point where I would have had to replace or sharpen it 2 or 3 times by now. It is a little more expensive than other models I've had in the past, but now I wish I would have taken the leap much sooner. The only criticism I can offer is that it could use a handle on the towing bar to lift it off the ground, as I prefer to not keep it attached to the garden tractor while mulching.

THE 14.50 IS A LITTLE WORKHORSE
Posted by: Christian from California on 07/13/2013
Rating:
Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of the 14.50. I had about a 1/4 acre of Southern California hillside covered with Acacia Redolens. Anybody that's dealt with this species knows its a very, very hard wood. The 14.50 plowed right through it and my son and I ran the chipper non-stop for several hours at a time. The Acacia was so hard that there were times when I honestly thought I was going to burn the machine up but the 14.50 just kept humming along. My only gripe about the design of this machine is the air cooling flow. There is a cooling impeller that is attached to the flywheel of the Briggs and Stratton engine. The impeller draws unfiltered air through the pull start housing. As you can imagine, chipping creates a lot of fine dust. This dust, is drawn directly through the impeller and channeled over the engine cooling fins. The result after about 15-20 hours of chipping was clogged and gummed up engine cooling fins. In order to clear the fins, I had to dismantle major components of the engine to access all areas of the cooling fins. I had to remove the muffler, fuel tank, carburetor and throttle body, several tin cowlings and the throttle control mechanism and cover. This little exercise took me about 4 hours and the engine is still not as completely clean as I'd like it to be. DR Power could improve this design by adding a simple air box to the Briggs and Stratton engine pull start housing to prevent fine chipping dust from being sucked and blown directly onto the engine when hot. I came up with a temporary quick-fix for this problem by going down to my local Home Depot and getting a sheet of air conditioning unit filtration element foam and duct taping it in place over the motor pull start housing. This solved the problem but I still have an engine that has baked on Acacia dust which I cannot now remove and I am not very happy about that (I am a stickler for maintaining clean machinery and equipment). Overall, the chipper met and exceeded my expectations despite the cooling system design flaw. I would recommend this chipper to my friends. DR Power makes really high quality equipment. The 14.50 is the "little orange engine that could". I am glad I made the purchase and will definitely consider purchasing other DR Power equipment in the future.

Powerful engine and heavy gauge steel. Built for heavy duty.
Posted by: 67cuda from Florida on 06/26/2013
Rating:
This machine was fairly easy to unpack and assemble with just a few hand tools. Filled with gas and oil and the engine fired right off with the first pull. Instructions said to check belt tention after first hour. This was too long to wait. The drive belt was too loose and damaged after about 25 minutes of heavy duty use chipping large palm fronds and tree limbs. I had to replace the belt with a Gates #45 belt and have not had any other problems since. The Gates belt seemed to be a much better quality belt. This machine is very well constructed of heavy gauge steel and a very powerful engine. Easy to use and chipped/shredded a large pile of yard debris in short order. It makes chippers available at home stores look like toys.

does a great job chipping/shredding, starts easy, I am very satisfied overall, would be easier to haul around if tires were bigger [ such as road tires ]. Problem with the discharge end - build up of material under the discharge end is so fast that it is hard to keep with the removal! As far as the instruction manual goes: the pictures are very difficult to look at! It looks like the pictures have been copied many times and are not as clear as they could be.

Good if you do not do a lot of chipping
Posted by: dfwm from Michigan on 06/23/2013

The unit ran very well. The only slight issue is that the exhaust elbow fell off but that is not a big deal. There are two main issues. The most frustrating is the bottom discharge. You need to keep clearing the bottom area if you are doing a lot of chipping or you need to pull the unit forward to allow more chips to be discharged. The second issue was that the location of the motor exhaust caused fumes to be pretty close to the operator. The only minor maintenance is that the belt needs to be tightened after a few hours of use. We exchanged the unit for a Rapid Chipper and are picking it up this week. DR was great about allowing us to exchange.

I chose the middle size 14.5 chipper/shredder and I'm very happy with the preformance as I am clearing up to 5 acres around my home on an annual basis. I use to burn with permits at specific times of the year but this allows me to chip and shred at anytime of the year on my time and all plant and wood material up to 3 inches. Larger wood I use for fire pit or wood stove burning. Just three minor features I found to be an issue but in no way would stop me from buying this model again. Leaves and such get sucked up against the fly wheel guard and need clearing periodically. The two towing wheels' diameters are too small for making a good hitch connection to larger lawn trackors or ATV/quods. Wheels could be larger diameter to even or level the towing bar to trackor or ATV. An hour meter is needed for tracking servicing and maintance. It's an added cost option and should be provided at no additional cost.

From the time I brought the machine to the house it has not disappointed me. After I went through the recommended checks, all I had to do was fill it with the correct fluids and make the settings and pull the cord and it was up and running. I have already shredded half the pile of limbs and sticks and are planning to continue my quest. The next best benefit of the shredder is the mulch you are able to collect when completed. This alone has helped save money and time. Most of the trees I am shredding are oak and the look and smell is very pleasing. Thank you for doing what you say DR and I will be in the market for other devises as my needs evolve.

If you are looking for something more robust than retail store brands, DR is a great alternative.

I found that when I tried to move this chipper shredder that there was no handle on the tongue so I had to fabricate a lift handle and attach it to the tongue. The next thing I found was that the wheels were so small that they would not "roll" through my gravel and dirt. I ordered 2 Martin Wheel and Tires. Tire size 15x6.00-6 and part #606DC-R342I, the bore axle diameter is 5/8 inch, from House of Wheels in Boise, Idaho. These were great people to deal with. All I had to do is remove one of the spacers on each side of the axle because the overall hub length of the new wheel is 3 1/4 inches. I discarded the cheezy wheel retainers and drilled a hole in axle for cotter pins. Now I'm ready to roll or tow it to where I need to use it.

say you work this machine for 3 days maybe 36 hours how should I know if the blades need sharpened
A.The Chipper blade will need to be sharpened roughly every 20 hour's or so of chipping time, you will know when the blade is getting dull when the "chips" start turning into "saw dust". The shredder has a lot more shredding time, it will depend on what you are chipping. Please contact us if you have any more question's.

Q.Is this machine too big to move around the yard by hand? I don't have a riding mower to tow it with!?
I'm refering to the shredder 14.50, I like the 3" and the extra HP over the smaller unit.
A.The DR 14.5 Chipper/ Shredder weigh's 235 lbs and has a tongue weight of 45 lbs. It will depend on if your property is flat or hilly and how much weight you are able to move, however I would recommend an ATV or Lawn tractor. Please contact us if you have any more question's.

Q.IS THIS CHIPPER SHREDDAR A SELF FEEDING MODEL
A.Our Chipper/Shredders are gravity fed. Meaning, that as you place the material into the hopper, gravity will pull it into the machine. It is not necessary to push the material through.

Q.How can I find more information on the 4 baffle discharge positions?
A.There are holes positioned in different places on the rear of the frame of this machine so you can move where the baffle is mounted to. This allows you to alter between a more downward or rear discharge. For more information about this machine, please contact our Technical Support department toll free at 1-(888) 550-0062 Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 6:00pm Eastern and Saturday from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Q.When Chipping do the chips go into the shredder section and get hit by the hammers or bypass it?
A.The chipper discharges into the shredding hopper, and then out the screen in the bottom. The hammers may further reduce the size of the chips depending on the type of wood you are chipping, but this will be minimal since the chips are going to be small enough to fit through the screen right away.

Q.Is there an electric starter option for the 14.5 pro chipper/shredder?
A.I'm sorry, the Pro model Chipper/Shredder is a manual start only. However, our manual start models feature a compression release mechanism. This mechanism works to ease the starting of internal combustion engines by allowing them to spin up to starting speed without having to work against the pumping action of the pistons. Our manual starts generally start on the first pull. If it is a physical limitation, you may want to consider the PRO-XL which features electric start.

Thank you for you inquiry.

A.if blades need to be sharpened- the machine will grind and your pile of chips won't look like a nice pile of chips. Unless you are a machinist - take your blades to a machinist to be sharpened.

Q.why would I buy a chipper/shredder over a chipper?
I have a normal yard but do lot of bush and limb cutting and have a bunch of debris. I also have a lot of leaves that I mulch. Would the chipper be better or the chipper/shredder be a better choice for me? Maximum limb (might be) 4 inches in diameter. Thanks CM
A.The Chipper works great for doing branches, but when you are doing garden debris, leaves, etc., then I would recommend the Chipper/Shredder. They can handle branches up to 4.5 inches in diameter (depending on the model), and all types of yard waste. Please contact us if you have further question's.

Q.I have an acre of hardwood and pine trees. I am not interested in mulching. Will your 11.50 premier model chipper handle limbs and leaves?
A.Our Premier model has a chipping capacity of of 3.5". As long as the limbs fall within that size, it will not have an issue chipping them. As for leaves, it is not meant for piles of leaves to be ran through it. This could potentially clog the machine. If there are leaves on the limbs and branches, that is fine. If you have piles, I would suggest looking into our Chipper/Shredders.

Q.Why did they make the shredding chute smaller on only the 14.50 model
A.The chute on the 11.50 Premier Chipper/Shredder would typically be shorter and narrower than the 14.50 Pro model, but because of the hand holds being built into the hopper on the 11.50 Premier model, we made the chute taller to make it more comfortable to grasp and maneuver.

Q.Would you choose a chipper or a chipper/shredder to easily despose of yard waste hassle free?
I currently own a 2 1/2" chipper/ shredder and it is a horrible hassle. I have to cut every branch down feed it half way through open then put the rest of the branch into the other section of the shredder/ chipper. I want mulch to put around trees, but I do not care how finely it is chopped. Can a chipper work effectively on small brush, berry trimmings, and other small debris or do I need a shredder for these tasks?
A.Our chippers are intended for rigid woody branches. It is best if the small flexible side twigs are removed. If they are not, the material that is not chipped will be sucked through the mechanism. Our chippers are not intended for flexible or green material. Those would require a shredder.

Q.how well does this chipper/shredder chip compared to your dedicated chippers?
I primarily want to chip branches, but the shredder seems like a nice added benefit, especially for mulching leaves and small branches. However, i dont want to compromise on chipping speed or ability. which is best for me a chipper or a chipper/shredder? what happens if you put small items into a chipper such as vines and leaves?
A.Thank you for your inquiry. To answer your questions it would be best to speak directly with a Sales Rep who can ask a variety of questions whose answers will best determine what fits your needs best. For instance, how frequently will you use the chipping portion? How many hours do you estimate a year? What type of wood are you chipping? What is the diameter of the material? Is it green or dry? Will you need to tow it around a property or will it be stationary? ...and many more. If you call our Sales line at (800)376-9637 and press the correct # on the phone selection system you will be connected to someone with a wealth of helpful information and they can help you figure out which machine will be best, based not on price but on needs. Thank you

Q.Can I get this model w/Electric Start? What is comparable to the #CSR120E or do all the FTP PRO models engines mount the same?
Will the tow bar accept a standard size ball hitch mounts. I would like to attach a 1 1/2" Ball Hitch mount?
A.The 14.50 Pro model is only available with manual start. The hitch is for a 3/8" pin. A standard ball coupler is not recommended. We do sell an item called the "Jimmy Hitch" which converts a 3/8" pin mount to a quick release small size ball. You can view that product on our website. The item number is 31684.

Q.Will it chip bamboo that's that's along my driveway that's 1/2 mile long X 50' wide & 3/4 " wide & 20 feet tall?
A.Material that is extremely flexible, soft, lightweight, fibrous or sticky such as some brush, bamboo and palm fronds, may be difficult to feed down the chipper hopper and may not adequately chip or discharge. However, the shredding hopper has free-swinging reversible hammers that pulverize and convert loose matter, such as bamboo, vines, grass clippings, straw and other garden waste into mulch or into small shreds that will compost rapidly. Comes standard with a 1" screen with the option to purchase 5 other size screens

Q.spec sheet for 14.50 chipper?
A.The 14.50 Chipper/Shredder will chip up to a 3" diameter baranch and shred up to 3/8" Due to the wide variety of materials that you can shred, and their very different physical characteristics, only feed limited quantities of any material into the Shredder Hopper at first. Increase the amount and length of material if you find that the material is processing without any difficulty. Your judgment and operator experience is very important. Be sure not to overload the machine by feeding too much material into the Hopper at one time. If you hear the speed of the Engine decreasing, stop feeding material into the machine at once. Do not resume feeding the machine until the Engine has returned to full speed. Q.Am I correct in assuming that this unit has a 14.5 horsepower motor?
A.Briggs & Stratton measures their power in FPT. Foot pounds of torque. This is a more accurate form of measurement then HP. Being that they are measured in separate ways, there is not accurate conversion. However, I can give you an approximate of 9.1 HP for a 14.5 FPT engine. Thank you for your interest in our Chipper/Shredders. fc

Q.palm trees
Will this work with freshly cot palm froms
A.Thank you for your inquiry. The Chipper WILL chip palm leaves but only if you bundle them together tightly (you might even want to take one of the fronds and wrap it around the bundle to keep it all together.) If the leaves are not tightly wrapped, individual fibers from the fronds might wrap around the flywheel, causing you to have to disassemble the housing to remove them. I hope this answers your question. If you'd like to order this item please call us at 800-376-9637.

Q.I will be primarily be usung the chipper/shreader to reduce fresh tree trimmings from carrotwood and Agonis Flexuosa (Austrailian Willow, Peppermint
Tree). I trim once a year and the branches are typically in the 1" or less range. I don't want to strip the leaves and smaller branches from the larger branches and feed seperately into two seperate hoppers! If I feed the 1" branches complete with smaller green branches and leaves, into the chipper hopper, will the material also automatically be fed through the swinging hammers of the shreader and be shreaded?
A.The max diameter for the Shredder is 3/8". Anything larger (up to 3") should go through the Chipper. You may need to trim larger offshoot branches to fit through the Hopper though.
