Do I need a Chipper or a Chipper Shredder?
You might think, 'Why choose a machine that can do one thing, when I can have one that does two things?' Actually, dedicated Chippers and the Chipper Shredders have important differences.
DR Self-Feeding Chippers use our exclusive DR technology to self-feed most materials. Drop in a branch and, once started, it will chip on its own. No force-feeding required! And our dedicated wood chippers use heavy duty flywheels (up to 62.5 lbs.) that store energy as they spin, so they have immense chipping power. They will eat up branches as thick as 5.75" (21.0 Self-Feeding Chipper). Chipper Shredders, on the other hand, divide their engine's power between two inner mechanisms: a somewhat lighter chipping flywheel and a shredding rotor with up to 48 free-swinging hammers. It loses some of its chipping power in pursuit in exchange for the versatility.
So DR Self-Feeding Chippers are the better choice for continuous wood chipping, but DR a DR Chipper Shredder may be better for homeowners who primarily want to shred yard and garden waste (but also chip branches occasionally)
What is self-feeding?
DR Self-Feeding Chippers will draw most materials into their hoppers without being force-fed. They feature large, vertically-oriented hoppers, precisely-angled chipping knives, and an air-injected venting system that pulls materials into the spinning chipper knife. If you've ever used an ordinary big box store chipper you know what it means to have force branches through!
What uses are there for Wood Chips and Mulch?
Wood chips make an attractive and effective mulching material for flower beds, covering muddy spots on trails and walkways, or for use as livestock bedding. Shredded materials will decompose very quickly, often within 2 weeks, so it is ideal for making compost to enrich your garden soil.
Are DR Chippers easy to maneuver? What about transporting?
All DR Chippers and DR Chipper Shredders maneuver in different ways. The smaller models have handles cut out of the shredder chute and easy-rolling wheels for manual transport, and most have towing kits available. Our larger models can be towed around your property with an ATV or lawn tractor, and have optional road towing kits available. We also offer a 3-point hitch model compatible with any category 1 PTO tractor.
